What better way to celebrate Limb Loss Awareness Month than to announce something that is going to radically change my life in the BEST way. With the help of my incredibly kind friend, John, I just bought a car that is perfect for my needs! I can easily load my chair into the backseat and hop into the drivers seat.... and I can do it all independently!!! Time and again, the lack of affordable and available transportation for disabled individuals has forced me (and I’m sure many others) to be incredibly late (I HATE tardiness) or completely miss a LOT of necessary medical appointments. I will have so much more flexibility to do anything I want!!! 😱 NOW, while the deal hasn’t completely finalized until they finish cleaning it up (it just came in), I am SO thrilled to be one more step closer being back to “normal”. Interestingly enough, the person who traded it in, is also in a wheelchair, and had his adaptions for the vehicle done by the same company I am working with. It’s almost like it was meant to be! 😊 THANK YOU SO MUCH, JOHN! April is Limb Loss Awareness Month! Did you know over 35% of limb loss individuals experience some form of depression and/or anxiety as a result of their limb loss. Isolation and loneliness being two of the leading psychosocial issues we struggle with. When we face adversity in life, it becomes easy to let those moments begin defining us. April is Limb Loss Awareness Month. Today, I’m going to share a personal story that I’m currently dealing with, as it relates to limb loss. *No Sympathy Allowed* Last night my wheelchair broke and I couldn’t fix it, nor use it. It was one of the first times I’ve truly felt helpless. I suddenly had tons of questions I never thought of. Who do I call at 7PM? What do I do? Who is responsible for the payment once I figure out what to do? How will I get there if I can’t sit in my wheelchair? What about work tomorrow? (I can go on, but you get the picture) Mary Free Bed (my provider), Airway Oxygen (my wheelchair supplier), and Priority Health (my health insurer) all seemed quizzical regarding my lack of knowledge for what to do; and a couple people were even shocked I didn’t have my own back-up wheelchair. I guess I just don’t think of all the possibilities until they have happened. A back-up wheelchair would be great, except for the fact that cheap ones aren’t THAT cheap. This experience has left me discouraged and honestly, a little defeated. Navigating through limb loss as a single person without any family near feels like a scary, lonely journey at times. Amputee Coalition #HillDay2019 is happening right now! I wish I could be there, but fortunately, there are over 120 of my fellow community members who have experienced limb loss/limb difference in Washington, D.C. right now advocating on important issues! The biggest issue we’re tackling is Insurance Fairness for Amputees - which ensures that we have access to the prosthetic equipment and technology needed to participate in life. Did you know insurers are actively looking for new loopholes that can restrict coverage for prosthetic care? I thought I’d bring back an a clip from a couple years ago that still gives me quite a laugh. The Anti-President, Donald Trump, nominated this nut job to lead the Council on Environmental Quality. I love @senwhitehouse trying to maintain his composure and not laugh in this lady’s face! I am going to following all my answers with, “unless I’m mistaken.” Typical of this administration, always choosing their public facing words VERY carefully as to make sure they don’t have to assume responsibility for anything.
