vii. "Savor your words, I won't ever waste them."
Sarah walks upstairs on her way to find Panda’s favorite sushi toy, singing to herself. Nick has a bunch of in-person meetings today, and Dream is spending the day with Drista at his mom’s house, so she’s home alone for the first time since she’s moved in. It’s kind of exhilarating, considering Dream is pretty much always home, and she and Nick have been attached at the hip since they made things official a few months ago.
She passes the boys’ rooms as she goes upstairs, glancing inside each one. Dream’s is pretty standard, she thinks, taking note of the made bed juxtaposed with the cluster of dirty dishes surrounding his keyboard. She does a double-take after she passes Nick’s room, jaw dropping slightly as she assesses the damage.
Nick is a pretty neat guy, which is what makes the scene even more jarring. The room is a mess of ring lights, cameras, and merch boxes, and Sarah just takes a moment to thank her lucky stars there are no dirty dishes–visible ones, at least–among the disarray. She supposes it makes sense, considering her bed has more become their bed; in fact, she can’t even remember the last time Nick used his room for anything other than streaming and a place to put his clothes. She laughs to herself as she sees the clean laundry strewn across the bed, clearly just tossed there in lieu of being folded.
“Honey, I’m home.” Sarah jumps at the sound of Nick’s voice, laughing as he yells through the sound of the garage door closing. He follows the sound of her voice upstairs, greeting her with an enthusiastic kiss. “Whatcha doing up here?” he asks, leaving an arm wrapped around her waist. Nick grimaces slightly as he realizes just how messy his room is.
“I feel like this is more of an office than a bedroom at this point, no?” Sarah muses, tapping her index finger against her lips absently. Nick shrugs in quiet embarrassment, blushing lightly although the mess doesn’t even seem to be Sarah’s focal point.
“I’m just never in here anymore, I guess,” he says, watching as Sarah continues to think. She nods in agreement. After opening and closing her mouth a few times, trying to turn her thoughts into words, Sarah turns to a patiently waiting Nick.
“No, I mean it.” She crosses the room, taking his hands in her own. “What if this. . .was your office?” Nick frowns slightly, failing to put the pieces together at first. Sarah misreads his look as rejection, rushing to amend her sentence.”I mean, it doesn’t have to be just your office, I meant like a stream room for both of you or something.”
A wide smile starts to spread crookedly across Nick’s face as he realizes what she means. “Sarah, are you asking me to move in with you?” She throws her head back and laughs, exuberance filling the room.
“Yeah I guess I am,” she says, smiling and leaning forward to kiss him. There’s a little too much teeth, and it’s more of a knocking of smiles together than anything else. But they’re too happy to care, then descending the stairs together and chatting excitedly about decor and whose bed is staying.
“We’re not like, being crazy are we?” Nick asks as they settle on the living room couch, a lull in the conversation spurring his anxious thoughts. Sarah looks at him thoughtfully, before shaking her head.
“I don’t think so.” A breath Nick didn’t know he was holding floods out of him. “I mean, we’ve basically already been ‘moved in’ pretty much since day one, and we were roommates first.” Sarah laughs lightly, shrugging. “And like, who cares if people think we’re crazy? Fuck ‘em.”
Nick’s heart swells, and he grins cheesily at her. “I’m crazy about you.” Sarah drops her head onto his shoulder and groans.
“Cheeseball.”
“You love it.” Nick grins cockily.
“I love you, yeah.” Sarah freezes as soon as the words come out of her mouth. She’s been thinking about it for a few weeks, sure, but she didn’t mean for it to just slip out, unprompted and unplanned.
*****
“Okay, okay, how was I supposed to know that was a cactus?” Sarah asks through a laugh, echoing the chaos streaming through her left earbud. Nick is on her right with the other one, arm slung over the back of her chair.
“Because it’s green,” Dream whines, prompting another round of hysterics from the rest of the Discord call.
“So’s the Grinch, dumbass,” says Nick, and Sarah is fully in tears at this point. Nick and Dream had both been dying to introduce her to more of their friends, so they arranged a private Jackbox game between them and a small group of other creators. Sarah knew most of their names from previously supporting her roommates’ content, but had never actually interacted with them. It was a little strange referring to someone as Luke, even after only knowing them as Punz, to name an example. Sarah was just happy to have another reason to make fun of Dream, as he had never preferred being called by his legal name.
As the round of Tee KO continues, with more hilariously misinterpreted drawings and captions, Sarah leans her head on Nick’s shoulder, a grateful smile on her face. Nick sees her expression in his monitor, everyone’s facecam on except for Dream’s, of course. He moves the arm around the back of her chair so his hand is in her hair, lightly threading his fingers through her hair. Sarah looks up at him, and her eyes meeting his is too much for Nick. Without thinking, he tilts his head down slightly and kisses her gently, hand moving from her hair to cup her cheek.
“Get a room, simpnap,” George says, mocking tone cutting through the argument Alex and Karl are having over the correct folder color for science–for the record, Sarah and Nick both agree with Karl that it’s green–and making Sarah immediately start to blush fiercely.
“Shut the fuck up, George,” Nick says easily, and Sarah laughs. It’s not often that Sarah’s more assertive personality recedes, but when it does, Nick never fails to fill in gaps without hesitation. She squeezes his thigh under the desk gratefully, while shooting a mocking response back to George.
*****
“Oh, God, I’m sorry, please don’t feel like you have to say it back, I–” Sarah’s panicked rambling is cut off as Nick places his hands on her cheeks and leans in. He kisses her with a quiet intensity, hands sliding gently from her cheeks to her waist. He doesn’t stop at one, pressing his lips to her forehead too before wrapping her in his arms.
“Of course I love you too,” he says softly, kissing her again atop her head. “I’m honestly just pissed that you beat me to it,” he says jokingly, settling back into the couch with Sarah leaning onto his chest. Sarah rolls her eyes.
“Of course I did.” Her tone is playfully cocky, sparking a mock fight between the two of them. Dream comes home as Nick has Sarah in a headlock on the floor.
“What is wrong with you?” he says, laughing as he makes his way to the kitchen. As always, after visiting his mom, Dream has a large canvas tote bag full of food to share. While Sarah does love to cook, she’s always grateful for the break as Dream’s mom usually gives them enough top-notch homemade food to last the week. Sarah breaks free of Nick as he’s distracted, going to help Dream put it all away.
“We had an idea, actually,” Nick says, walking in after Sarah. “Dream, what do you think of converting my bedroom into an office?” Dream turns to him, raising his eyebrows.
“Oh, you guys are taking the next step, huh?” he asks, and Nick’s brow furrows slightly.
“What? No, we’ve already had se–” Nick’s sentence is cut off by Sarah sprinting across the kitchen and placing a hand over his mouth.
“Not what he meant,” she says, eyes wide in disbelief as Dream doubles over, wheezing. Nick starts laughing too once he realizes his own mistake, Sarah’s hand no longer masking the sound. She laughs too, shaking her head at her oblivious boy.
“Yes, Dream, we want to make my bedroom ours,” she says once everyone has sufficiently recovered. “Nick’s room is barely usable as a bedroom at this point anyways, and I have the master so it makes sense for 2 people, right?” Dream nods, already on board.
“I mean, you guys don’t have to convince me, I’m definitely cool with having a separate streaming space that I can use besides my room,” he says, shrugging. “I mean, I’ll probably keep my room setup too, just for things like MCC, but yeah I think that’s a great idea,” he says.
Dream then goes upstairs to grab a laptop from his room with the intention of pricing some new communal equipment. Sarah and Nick get to work deciding what’s staying and what’s going from both of their rooms.
It’s eventually decided that Nick’s bed will go into storage with some of Sarah’s things, along with some seasonal boxes that don’t need to stay in the house year-round. His old dresser is repurposed as a technology arsenal, housing extra equipment and cables. Sarah also spends the evening rearranging her dresser and closet situation to accommodate Nick’s clothes, and by the very early hours of the morning, the office is ready for new equipment and houses a temporary setup for Nick, and the master bedroom has become theirs.
Fittingly for a Sunday, the roomies spend the day catching up on sleep since the room conversion became an all-night endeavor. It feels surreal for Nick to get ready for bed in his and Sarah’s bathroom, and he’s never been so excited to brush his teeth as he catches Sarah’s eye beside him in the mirror, toothpaste-laden grins on both their faces.

vi. “I hold you close to me.”
“Well, well, well.” Dream smirks, and Sarah has never wanted to punch someone directly in the face more than right in this moment. Which is pretty impressive, considering she lives with two certified nimrods.
“I hate you so goddamn much.” Sarah is well aware that Nick has completely wrapped himself around her koala-style in his sleep. She is also well aware that doesn’t mind one bit.
*****
Nick and Sarah have migrated to her bed, Adventure Time playing softly on her TV in the background. They’re not watching though, not really. Sarah’s been watching Nick’s eyes flutter as he tries to stay awake. He lost that battle about 3 minutes ago, head heavier in Sarah’s lap as he falls deeper and deeper into sleep.
Sarah considers waking him up. That’s all, just considers it. What she instead decides to do is gently move a pillow under Nick’s head. She decides to turn the lights off, turn the TV down, and snuggle into her blankets like normal. And if she decides that Nick’s chest is the best place to lay down, then that’s her business.
*****
“I know who you don’t hate.” If it weren’t for sleeping Nick literally enveloping her, Sarah would’ve wiped that shit-eating grin off of Dream’s face the second he appeared in the doorway. Actually, the second he did the knock-and-then-enter-anyways, because she’s actually wanted to hit him for that for a while. A while.
“Get out,” she hisses, and Dream puts his hands up in mock surrender as he walks backwards towards the hallway.
“Damn, I was just gonna ask if you wanted McDonald’s, but never mind,” he says, sticking his tongue out as he closes her bedroom door. Sarah grits her teeth in irritation as she hears Dream laugh gleefully from the other side of her door. She can’t talk too much shit, she thinks, as she reflects back on the merciless teasing he’s endured from both her and Nick since he got together with George.
Nick’s grip begins to loosen as his eyelids drag upwards. Sarah watches as he blinks a few times, then freezes as it seems to register who he’s laying on. She’s practically sweating from the intensity of his blush, and she can almost hear the gears in his head frantically beginning to turn. So she smiles before placing her hand lightly on his cheek, beaming even wider as he leans into the touch.
“Hi,” she says softly, and he answers simply, with a small, shy kiss.
“Hi?” he says, voice still scratchy from sleep. He looks a little shocked at himself, and Sarah can’t help but giggle at the look on Nick’s face. She can’t help but giggle at a lot of things, and Nick can’t take his eyes off her.
“I’ve been wanting to kiss you since we met,” he says quietly, eyes trained on the sheets. “I didn’t even know you liked me back.” Sarah shakes her head fondly.
*****
Sarah sighs and closes her laptop, pausing to scratch Panda under his chin before standing and stretching. It’s been a long day of work and school after not a lot of sleep last night, and she frowns slightly as she recalls her irritation with Nick.
She thinks she was maybe a little too grumpy with him, and she pulls her phone back out to reexamine the texts she sent him last night. She sighs, shaking her head as she tosses her phone back on the bed. She’s not even mad, she never was. It was bound to happen, living with 2 men who livestream for a living. But, she knows that without encounters like this, it could just keep happening and drive a wedge between her friendships with them.
After brushing her teeth and washing her face, Sarah decides to grab some water before going to bed early, and opens her door to descend to the kitchen. She almost trips over the case of energy drinks in front of her door, and after she steadies herself, Sarah bends to pick up the box. Along with the economy-sized bag of KitKats, a slightly crinkled sticky note flutters to the ground as she gathers her goodies to take into the kitchen.
Sarah smiles, feeling a slight blush creep up her cheeks as she recognizes Nick’s unkempt handwriting. She smooths her thumb over the poppy scribbled over a solid fourth of the note, touched that he noticed her affinity for the red flower.
Before going downstairs, Sarah slides the note under her pillow, her guilty little secret.
*****
“Exposed,” she jokes softly, reaching under her pillow and revealing the Post-It. Nick’s eyes widen, and he looks between her and the note, bewildered.
“You kept it? I thought you were so mad at me,” he says, dropping his head in relief.
“I mean, I wasn’t thrilled with you,” she says, laughing lightly. “But if I was, like, mad, I would’ve brought it up again later.” Her tone is reassuring, and Nick looks back up to meet her eyes. Sarah thinks he kind of looks like a puppy, big dark eyes staring up at her like that.
She kisses him again, and Nick melts.
*****
“Hey guys,” Dream says, smirking mercilessly from the couch as Sarah and Nick walk downstairs together. It’s early afternoon by now, so the pair have begrudgingly extracted themselves from Sarah’s bed after Nick’s stomach protested loudly enough to startle a sleeping Poppy.
“Hey guys,” Nick says mockingly, stealing a fry from Dream’s McDonald’s bag.
“You want your McChicken or not?” Dream asks, snatching the second bag away from Nick’s outstretched arm. The blonde looks over at Sarah, smirking again. “Don’t worry, I got you nuggets even after being rudely kicked out of your room this morning.” Sarah scoffs.
“Perhaps if you waited for an answer before knocking, literally ever, I wouldn’t have to be rude,” she says, easily plucking the bag from Dream’s distracted hand. “Thanks, though.” She hands Nick’s sandwich off to him and fishes her own box out of the bag, rolling her eyes at her roommate.
“Stop stalling, what is,” Dream says, gesturing between the two of them, “. . .this? Like, tell me how much of a third wheel I’m about to be in my own house,” he jokes. Nick immediately blushes and looks at the floor, as Sarah answers easily.
“We’re together. Is that okay?” Her quiet assertiveness is blunt and reassuring, and Nick smiles gratefully at her. The word together feels so comfortable already, even though they’ve decided to take things pretty slowly since they’ve managed to blow past the moving in together conversation.
“Of course that’s okay, I’m just glad Sap’ll stop texting me the second he’s alone with you,” Dream says, dodging the sauce packet Nick immediately lobs at his head in response.
“C’mon dude.” Nick whines, as Sarah laughs and Dream retaliates with a crumpled-up napkin. Surprisingly, that’s as far as the conversation seemingly needs to go as the roomies settle into their usual banter. The only real difference being Sarah’s legs in Nick’s lap as they talk, his fingers absentmindedly tracing shapes on her bare calf.
*****
Sarah curls up in her bed with Panda, Nick’s late-night Valorant stream pulled up on her phone. Try as she might, she loses the fight to keep her eyes open. This is how Nick finds her as he opens her door slowly, quietly an hour later. He takes a moment, smiling gently as he takes in her peaceful face, her deep, even breathing calming his own pulse.
Nick turns Sarah’s phone off after exiting out of Punz’s stream he raided, pausing to let Poppy in as well. He takes his time pulling her comforter back and climbing into bed, movements small and soft as he tries his best not to wake her up. He curses silently as Poppy jumps onto the bed and starts to nest, little paws undoing all the work he just did to try and not disturb his sleeping girlfriend.
Holy shit, he thinks, realizing this is the first time he’s thought of the term casually. Granted, it’s the first day of their relationship, but Nick smiles anyway at the thought.
“Hey.” His thoughts are interrupted by Sarah’s sleep-rough voice, and he snaps out of his reverie to give her a gentle kiss on the forehead.
“Go back to sleep,” he whispers, taking the opportunity to slide his arms around her waist. She hums in response, already turning back over to rest her back against his chest. “Goodnight,” he whispers again, pressing another kiss to the back of her head. The fresh scent of her conditioner fills his nose, and Nick falls asleep smiling for the first time in a long time.

chapter 4.
v. “The first time that you touched me. . . oh, will wonders ever cease?”
Nick isn’t sure how much time has passed since Sarah moved in. He knows it’s been more than 3 months. He knows her name is on the lease now. He knows that even though he’s too scared to mess it up and just go for her already, he’s pretty damn happy with how things have ended up so far.
He shakes his hair out of his eyes, smiling at the ceiling as he feels Poppy begin to paw at his chest. The smell of bacon and maple syrup drifts upstairs from the kitchen, and Nick pads happily to the bedroom door in his fuzzy socks, pulling a hoodie he found in his bed over his head as he does so. The sun coming in through the blinds has warmed the dining room floor, and Nick is greeted with the sight of Sarah batting Dream’s looming figure out of the kitchen, his hand clenched around a single strip of bacon.
“Wait. Your. Turn,” Sarah says, punctuating each word with a light swat from the pot holder in her right hand. Her left hand is busy keeping Panda at bay, palm pressed against his furry chest as his neck strains to reach the bowl of sliced fruit sitting inches away.
Nick has never been happier to be awake at 9:00 AM in his entire goddamn life.
“I just wanted one piece.” Dream’s whine pulls Nick back to earth as he sighs and snatches his roommate’s hood. The taller man’s legs walk backwards begrudgingly, and Nick drags him out of Sarah’s way. Once Dream is sat in a chair at the kitchen table, Nick turns and walks back into the kitchen, scooping Panda off the counter. Sarah bumps his hip with hers gratefully, bending down to pull homemade biscuits out of the oven.
“What’s the occasion?” Nick asks, taking a seat across from Dream. He dangles a toy between Poppy and Panda under the table, laughing softly as they bat paws. Sarah straightens, placing the pan to cool on the counter.
“Well, you and Dream both gave yourselves a Saturday off for once, and because I am a normal adult with normal adult weekends, we all have time to hang out together today.” Dream winces minutely in sympathy as Sarah seems to stress the word. Nick fights looking up in obvious shame. Parts of living with Sarah haven't become any easier; especially, when Dream and George are playing their self-proclaimed roles as “wingmen.” How George manages to be such a nuisance even from an entirely different continent, Nick will never know.
*****
“Okay, just because you’ve recently had like, your gay awakening or whatever–” Nick’s playful tirade is cut off by Dream throwing a pillow at his head. Sarah laughs, patting his cheek sympathetically as Nick gapes at the blonde like a goldfish.
“Shut up,” Dream groans, pressing his own face into his hands and leaning dangerously far back in the armchair. “I don’t even know what to call it, okay?” Nick backs off, raising his hands in surrender and nodding respect to his friend. Dream is unaffected, having begun typing away–presumably–to George, and Nick rolls his eyes, turning so Sarah can see.
She’s half-sitting up on the arm of the couch, legs stretched lazily over Nick’s lap. He’s been careful to only touch what her jeans cover all night, gently lifting her ankle to reach into his pocket for his phone, or tickling the back of her clothed calf while she was winning in Mario Kart an hour before. Speaking of, he feels his phone vibrate against his leg, so he shimmies a hand into his pocket, using a hand to wrap around Sarah’s ankle and lifting again.
It makes her giggle every time, and Nick loves the sound so much, he keeps putting his phone back into his pocket just to keep pulling it back out. He smiles back as Sarah catches his eye, sharing the joke. His eyes flick back down to his phone, and he sees a message notification:
Gogy: maybe take some notes, simpnap
Nick groans inwardly, fighting the urge to make a scene while he has Dream’s attention. George being clued in on his love life predicament has been an upsetting development in their friendship. Nick can’t get a second of peace anymore, either fielding questions from George or avoiding eye contact with Dream and his knowing looks.
All of this, on top of trying to avoid being alone with Sarah. Nick has decided that maybe it's better if he and Sarah aren't alone for the foreseeable future. For his own sake.
*****
It's gotten a little ridiculous. Dream can barely go to the bathroom without Nick texting him in a panic approximately 2 minutes after he leaves the room.
McDreamie: nick u are an adult man i am begging u to let me take a shit in peace
Nick grimaces and pockets his phone as Sarah comes back into the living room, balancing 3 different gatorades and a bottle of vodka in her hands. They’ve decided to use their one shared weekend day to blow off some steam. After a relaxing afternoon of ordering way too much sushi and Dream convincing them that getting a 3rd cat is a good idea–he may have made some valid points, but that is a tomorrow conversation–they realized the date is in fact, July 11th, and 7/11 is within walking distance of the house.
“Okay, gas stations are open late, right? I propose a little pre-game for the gas station adventure,” Sarah says. She places her various beverages on the table and sweeps her arms in a grandiose parody, grinning at Nick. “We can walk, so like.” She shrugs in lieu of finishing her sentence, eyebrow raised expectantly as she waits for his answer.
“Yeah, I’m down,” he says, grinning as Sarah passes him a gatorade bottle. To be fair, she could’ve asked him to do just about anything and he would've said yes. Maybe he can use the alcohol to his advantage, he thinks, having never been more than tipsy around her. They clink the shot glasses Sarah has also managed to retrieve from the kitchen, Nick pouring like the gentleman he is. He watches through his vodka-induced wince, as Sarah takes a long pull of her gatorade, winking as she does so.
Dream thankfully re-enters the living room before Nick can put his foot in his mouth.
“You guys are seriously gonna take shots without me?” he asks indignantly, and Sarah immediately fills hers and Nick’s glasses up again as well as the third. She raises hers high, and the boys do the same, looking at her expectantly.
“To 7/11,” she says, laughing as they cheers. They all spend another hour messing around and getting pleasantly buzzed before heading to the gas station, outlandish vessels in hand for 7/11 day.
*****
Dream has gone to bed hours ago, grumpy from talking to George all last night. Sarah and Nick have made their way into her room, giggling and shushing each other as if, one: her room isn’t the farthest away from Dream’s, and two: he doesn’t sleep like a literal corpse. She collapses on the bed, leaving Nick to her gaming chair, lazily splaying his legs apart. She isn’t sure if it’s the shooters they poured into their slushies or the way Nick’s face gets red and splotchy when he’s tipsy; regardless, she keeps finding excuses to touch him.
Fingers, when he passes her the half-melted drink. Ankles, as she captures them in her own, pretending not to listen as he rambles about the day.
“Are you trying to play footsie with me? What are we, old people?” Nick laughs, and Sarah shoves him back in the chair, only to grab one of the armrests as Nick tips back, his fingers starting to reach for her already. His hand clamps over her arm, warm and heavy. “Nice catch.”
They’re close, so close Sarah can smell the lemonade vodka and blue raspberry slushie on his breath.
“I’m sorry, you’re going to mix dark rum with blue slush puppy? I refuse to believe that’ll be enjoyable for you.” Nick turns around, starting to laugh.
“What did you just say? Did you just say slush puppy?” She blushes, hitting Nick in the arm.
“I’m Canadian, asshole, that’s what it’s called there,” she says, whining as Nick continues to laugh behind her. She rolls her eyes and tries—unsuccessfully—to hide a smile as Nick grabs her hoodie sleeve. She can hear the plastic clack of shooters in both of their front pockets, and it just makes the giggles sliding past Nick’s lips still even funnier.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, it’s actually kinda cute, I promise.” Sarah’s heart stutters. For just a second, time stops. The harsh lighting of the 7/11 fluorescents somehow makes Nick’s eyes look greener. “Now will you please switch with me? You know blue is my favorite flavor, and lemonade would be perfect with it.” Sarah releases the breath she didn’t know she was holding as Nick whines and pulls her hoodie sleeve like a child.
“You’re lucky I’m nice.” Sarah tosses him the Deep Eddy’s shooter, and his wrist flicks casually to catch it. Sarah tells her pulse to get a grip.
Nick’s mouth is slightly parted, and Sarah could sit here and count his teeth one-by-one. “Your tongue is blue,” she says softly. Nick smirks, and feels his hand decidedly not moving.
Christ.
“You know I do actually think slush puppy is pretty cute.” Sarah thinks Nick might be psychic, and it’s not often that she’s lost for words, but he smells so good, like sweet alcohol and sweeter slushie, like nice cologne, like Nick. The air between them feels heavy, like a glass wall just waiting to shatter.
He shatters it, and Sarah finally understands what all that fireworks bullshit is about. For someone who’s never had his first kiss, he’s good at it. Like really good. The hand he used to catch himself travels slowly to the back of her neck, pressing delicately into her hair to pull her even closer. His other slowly, hesitantly brushes over her hip, as if asking permission.
Sarah leans right into his hand, trying to tell him, it’s okay, please touch me, please, I’ve been waiting, and Nick is definitely psychic. He pulls away, glassy-eyed, a dopey smile on his face; only to grab her hips with both hands and pull her to him. She stands between his legs, cupping his stubble-rough face in her hands as Nick wraps his arms around her waist. It feels like time stops, and Sarah wants to live in this feeling forever. Nick’s lips on hers, hands pulling her as close as he can.
When they finally pull apart, they’re both breathing like they’ve run a marathon. Nick is beaming, and Sarah feels like the sun is shining out of his face and bathing her in comfort.
“There’s no way that was your first kiss.” Sarah is still breathless, and Nick’s grin twists into a smirk.
“I’ve been practicing with Karl.” Sarah laughs as the smile slides from Nick’s face. He looks down at his lap and starts playing with his fingers. The next thing he says is directly to the floor, so quiet that Sarah can barely make it out. “Was it good for you?”
Sarah bursts into laughter. She can’t help it, he has to know what that sounds like. Nick frowns deeper, and begins to get up from the chair. Realizing her mistake, Sarah darts and grabs his arm. “Hey, I’m sorry, I wasn’t laughing at you, I promise. Just sounded funny.” Nick still looks like a wounded puppy, and Sarah takes his hands in hers, arranging her face as earnestly as possible. “Nick. I’ve been waiting for this. Of course it was good for me.”
The set of his shoulders relaxes, and Nick’s eyes soften. “You’ve been waiting? Really?” Sarah rolls her eyes and nods, sneaking a small kiss onto his unsuspecting lips just to prove her point.
“Yes, really.”

chapter 2.
chapter 3.
iv. “I’m so lost in you, in all that you do.”
Dream is in one of those moods where he just babbles his internal monologue out loud. The statement comes out of nowhere, and Sarah’s head snaps up from her phone at record speed. Nick sits quietly, eyebrows raised in amusement. They’re all hanging out in Dream’s room, as he woke up sick and whiny and unwilling to move, but also unwilling to be alone.
Come to think of it, the exorbitant amount of cold medicine in the man’s system is probably a contributing factor to what he says. “Sarah, you should stream with us sometime.”
“Absolutely not.” The speed of her answer surprises both boys, and they exchange a look as she shakes her head. “That many people being aware of my existence is. . . horrifying.”
“It still is, kind of,” Nick says absently. Sarah turns to look at him, head cocked slightly.
“What do you me--” Sarah cuts herself off, gesturing in frustration. “Not what do you mean, I mean, why. . . why do you do it? If it’s scary?” She huffs, throwing her hands up as she searches for the right words. Nick is patient, wanting to respect her full thought and willing to wait until she can articulate it properly. Dream giggles, definitely loopy from accidentally taking NyQuil instead of DayQuil. Sarah shakes her head.
“Ugh, okay, let me start over. What I’m asking, I think, is what do you love about streaming? Like, what makes streaming as a career worth the scary parts?” She smiles, finally satisfied with her question, and Nick takes a moment. He racks his brain, wanting desperately to match her thoughtfulness. Dream has been distracted by the sitcom playing on his TV, so Sarah and Nick just lower their voices. She sits cross-legged on the end of Dream’s bed, facing the office chair Nick is slowly swiveling back and forth in.
“It’s not so much about the streaming itself.” Nick pauses again, forming his words carefully and deliberately. Sarah is staring at him, listening intently, and her gaze is not helping his thought process. Nick takes a breath.
“Okay, like, it is insane that my job is just. . . playing games with my friends. Of course it’s more than that, with merch and YouTube and whatever, but at its core, I’m just hanging out with my friends, professionally.” Sarah nods, brow slightly furrowed as she listens. He wants to kiss the little wrinkle between her eyebrows away.
“Don’t get me wrong, I’m so thankful for the supporters I have, like I am literally nothing without them behind me. I just--” Nick echoes Sarah’s earlier gestures, striving for more eloquence than he has in his entire school career. “I just feel like I’m under a microscope sometimes, and getting to do what I love on my own time with the people I love is honestly always worth all the. . . scary stuff.” He stares at his fingers, suddenly embarrassed at his own earnesty.
“No, that makes perfect sense.” Sarah nods slowly, and Nick raises his head to meet her eyes with his. “That’s a feeling that a lot of people spend their entire lives searching for.”
Nick smiles, happy he got his point across well. She hasn’t stopped staring at him though, and Nick isn’t sure what to do. He is definitely imagining things. Or maybe he’s not, he literally can’t tell anymore, but it definitely feels like Sarah is looking directly at his mouth. And he really wants it to be true, because he can feel himself starting to lean forward, and holy shit there’s no way this is actually about to happen--
He’s right. Nothing is about to happen. Because his stupid, big dumb idiot of a best friend snores. Dream must have fallen asleep during him and Sarah’s conversation, and the combination of both his sitting-up sleeping position and his impressively clogged sinuses produce the loudest, grossest, mid-snore snort he has ever heard in his life.
“Oh my god, I think his snot is alive,” Sarah stage-whispers, giggling through her face of mild disgust. Nick’s entire body relaxes in relief as he realizes Sarah didn’t even notice him reading way too far into the previous moment. He laughs and helps her get off the bed quietly, Sarah using him to lean on as not to disturb their pitiful roommate.
Once they make it safely out of the room, Nick lets out a burst of laughter, clapping a hand over his mouth as Sarah giggles next to him. They wander into the kitchen, bumping their shoulders together as they take turns exchanging glances. Sarah takes a few steps ahead as she stands in the kitchen, hands on her hips and back to Nick. She takes a moment before clapping her hands together and turning to him.
“We’re going to make chicken soup.” Nick’s eyes widen.
“. . . we?” Sarah nods firmly, and Nick tries not to smile too hard as her fingers wrap around his wrist and pull. They knock shoulders again, and Sarah turns to him, pointing to the fridge.
“Yes, we. Grab that leftover rotisserie chicken from the fridge please, there should be leeks and carrots in the drawer.” Nick nods, immediately eager to please as he opens the refrigerator door. He’s nervous, which is pretty usual standard for being in Sarah’s presence; but, it’s different this time. For one, he wants to kiss her even more now, after getting so close. He also wants to impress Sarah, and if he can’t be great at cooking, he can definitely be great at listening.
“C’mere, I’ll show you how I want the slices.” Nick is entranced as Sarah pulls the cutting board closer to her, deft hands grabbing 2 onions from the counter before segmenting one of them into paper-thin cuts. He marvels at how she can move so fast and yet so precisely. Marvels so closely, he almost misses her eyes searching his, hand poised to hand the knife over. “See?”
“Uh, yeah,” his voice is soft, matching hers on instinct. He closes his fingers over the knife handle without breaking eye contact, fingers itching to stay as they brush hers in the exchange. He wants to imagine the pads of her fingers glide over the back of his hand for longer than they should’ve; he wants to, but he turns and dutifully begins to slice, willing the back of his neck to cool down.
“How about the carrots?” Nick’s voice is soft, and he’s shy in a way he hasn’t been since they first met. That’s the thing about Sarah: she can make anyone feel comfortable with her, even him. It’s not that he’s uncomfortable. Rather, she just makes him so damn nervous. He feels like a child again, amazed by the smallest of things.
He’s amazed by Sarah’s hair, as she sweeps it up into a loose ponytail. Her eyes, flitting between the pot of stock waiting to boil and the chicken carcass she’s nimbly stripping of meat, shreds of chicken being relocated to a small mixing bowl. Her hands, delicately dropping the bones into the pot. Her back, arching slightly as she reaches into the spice cabinet over her head. Her skin, illuminated by the sun glowing through the kitchen window.
“Almost done with those?” Sarah asks, gesturing towards the cutting board with a wooden spoon. Nick suppresses a laugh as droplets of chicken stock flick over the counter.
“Yup. Here?” Nick points to the stock pot, and Sarah grins, impressed.
“Correct, thank you Nicholas.” Sarah tips an imaginary hat in his direction. Nick mirrors the movement.
“M’lady.” A laugh bursts from Sarah, and she rolls her eyes playfully.
“Not the fedora, no,” she whines, drawing out the last vowel. Nick laughs as he scrapes the sliced veggies off of the cutting board and into the pot. Sarah’s eyes are trained on her stock as she drops an herb bundle inside, nodding to herself as she covers the pot. As she explains her process of making chicken soup to Nick, he tries to listen. He tries really hard.
But it’s close to twilight, and the setting sun is making Sarah look really pretty right now. The flyaway ends of her loosely tied hair look golden awash in the kitchen window, and Nick does not remember taking a creative writing class in high school, but he wants to write a poem to describe what Sarah looks like right now. Her face is relaxed, happy as she chatters on about the best noodles for chicken soup–”. . .pappardelle, that like, really wide spaghetti noodle? Underrated choice, not to mention–”
“Oh shit, Sarah.” Nick manages to tear his eyes away from her impassioned face when he hears sizzling. The water for said pasta has boiled over, watered-down foam sliding down the sides of the pan and hitting the stovetop. Sarah curses and turns down the heat, and Nick takes the moment to steel himself,
Stop staring at your roommate, you’re being creepy and weird.
He’s not sure how, but they’ve managed to make a really good chicken noodle soup. Well, it was more of Sarah cooking and Nick watching so he guesses it’s not that big of a mystery. Here he is again, just watching as she ladles the steaming broth into a large glass tupperware. She’s so sure, not a drop spilled as she portions out 3 bowls from the bottom of the massive pot.
“Can you. . .?” Sarah gestures her arms up towards the pot, and Nick crosses the distance in 2 strides. He lifts the pot and pours, careful not to shove his arm under Sarah’s chin as she uses the wooden spoon to scrape the last of the chicken from the bottom of the pot. He doesn’t even realize he’s holding his breath until his vision starts to waver, and his biceps tighten like a vice as he fears dropping the cooking vessel. Sarah thanks him and slides her arms away just in time for Nick to place the pot back on the stove and take a few deep breaths, fighting to keep his chest steady so Sarah doesn’t notice.
Christ dude, get it together.
Luckily, Dream has evidently woken up and smelled something cooking, and his text in their group chat distracts both him and Sarah. They spend the rest of the day eating soup and watching TV in Dream’s room, playing cards when they get bored of the TV, and GoPuffing more tissues when Dream uses them all. And if some microwave popcorn and candy make their way into the GoPuff cart, it’s fine. Secret movie night in Dream’s room after he falls asleep is fine. Sarah falls asleep on the floor, slumped against Nick’s shoulder and it’s honestly, fine.

prologue.
chapter 1.
chapter 2.
iii. “I’m leaving you love notes in the kitchen.”
Nick has no idea what’s happening in this movie. All he knows is the title, but even that memory is long-gone. Dream, that motherfucker, had decided to sit on the other end of the couch instead of in the middle. With the cats somehow occupying the entirety of the big armchair, Nick is now sharing a blanket with Sarah and concentrating very hard on not moving either one of his hands folded in his lap.
It’s fine across the dining room table, while all the lights are on. It’s fine in the car, he’s just thankful he has someone to run errands with for once. It’s even fine when they converge in the kitchen at ungodly hours of the morning,
*****
Sarah turns her pillow to the cold side for the 3rd time in 40 minutes, and she huffs in annoyance. The glare of her phone screen screws a single eye shut, her phoneless hand flying up as if to shield her eyes from the sun.
She hasn’t been awake for that long; hell, it’s not even sunrise hours yet. The frustrating part, is Sarah had finally gotten to bed after a particularly brutal round of homework, and her lovely sleep was interrupted by Panda’s insistence on making noise regardless of the time of day. She had woken earlier with a start to hear Panda quite frankly, yelling, from his perch atop the closed toilet lid. Sarah curses under her breath before scooping the distraught kitty in her arms, weight immediately settling against the fabric of her enormous t-shirt.
“C’mon dude, you woke me up like half an hour ago,” she whines, walking over to her bed and lowering Panda onto the blankets. He immediately jumps off and pads to the closed bedroom door, starting to meow again.
“Are you seriously begging me for a treat right now?” Panda cocks his head, and Sarah swears this cat understands more English than he probably should. She sighs in resignation, opens the door and snorts as Panda immediately slinks past her legs and trots down the stairs. The kitchen light is already on, and Sarah frowns slightly as she tries to remember if she turned the light off when she closed the blinds earlier.
Nick unknowingly answers her question as he stands hunched over the kitchen counter. Sarah makes sure to step extra loudly onto the tile so she doesn’t sneak up on him, and Nick turns to see her in all her post-studying glory. Sarah gives him a lazy salute and opens the fridge, her bloodshot eyes sliding shut as the cool air hits her face. Nick wordlessly hands her a spoon and holds up the half-eaten container of Cherry Garcia.
“Thanks.” Sarah tosses her handful of chilled KitKats on the counter, accepting Nick’s offer. She swallows and “mm”s appreciatively, letting the spoon dangle from her mouth as she swipes the jar of peanut butter from the pantry.
“Goodnight,” Nick says, half-smiling as Sarah nods her head in acknowledgement, spoon handle bobbing in time with the bun swept on top of her head.
*****
Nick barely conceals a jump as Sarah’s thigh presses into his. She’s settled into her corner of the couch, blanket bunched up to support her head against the arm. He’s jealous of her ability to relax, ability to touch him without overthinking it.\
He doesn’t even realize his phone has vibrated against his leg until Dream’s toe jabs his other thigh, the blonde man giving him a pointed eyebrow raise. Sarah is too invested in the movie to notice, pose casual, but eyes bright as the screen flickers colors across her face. He unclasps his prayer hands, taking care to remove his phone from the pocket of his sweatpants with as little movement as possible.
McDreamie: you look insane, wtf are you doing with your hands?
Nick pockets his phone, making a point of not looking at Dream as he lets his hands relax in his lap. He feels awkward just letting them sit there like wet noodles though, so he places his hands palm-down on his thighs. Which was fine, until he started rubbing his pants up and down as a nervous habit, earning another toe-poke from Dream. He’s kind of flailing, mentally, and breathes an almost audible sigh of relief as Dream breaks the movie-watching silence that has filled the room until now
“Sapnap, cuddle,” he says simply, splaying his giraffe legs over Nick’s thighs. Nick laughs and jokingly pats Dream’s legs, settling with hands on his roommate’s ankles. Sarah giggles, and Nick looks over, mirroring her smile as she breaks away from the screen.
“Adorable.” Dream makes obnoxious kissing noises in response, and Sarah tosses a stray throw pillow at him. “Never mind, I take it back. You ruin everything.”
“Bitch, I will turn this off.” Sarah’s eyes narrow, and Nick suppresses a laugh as her and Dream lunge for the remote at the same time. Sarah is quicker, and Dream stretches over Nick to try and swipe it from her. She shakes her head and shoves Dream’s face away, palm smushing his cheek and muffling whatever smart-ass thing he was going to say next. Sarah laughs maniacally, turning the movie up to a home-theater level as Dream yells, “give me it,” and Nick has given up on hiding his laughter.
“It’s the last 10 minutes anyways, calm down,” Sarah says, rolling her eyes and turning the TV back down. The cats, spooked by the noise, have fled the living room, leaving the armchair empty.
Now, Nick has had to pee for the last half hour. Not only did he drink a lot of water with dinner, he’s also been nervously sipping an energy drink since the end of dinner, can warm between his thighs. Laughing at Dream and Sarah made it even worse. However, Nick would rather piss his pants than get up from this couch right now.
In the epic battle for the remote, Sarah’s position on the couch has completely changed. Instead of leaning away from him, her knees are resting lightly atop his thighs, and her shoulder is partially pressed into his, partially buried in between 2 couch cushions. Nick feels like he’s forgotten how to breathe, terrified she’ll realize how close she is and move.
Not that her moving is an issue; he isn’t psychotic. It’s more, the “oh, sorry,” she’s sure to throw his way as she moves. It’s the fact that Nick knows he won’t know what to say when that happens. It’s that, even though the words “for what?” could be stamped across the back of his eyelids, he knows he will sit there like a goldfish. Mouth opening as closing as his brain grinds to a halt, the way it always does when Sarah’s around. Living with Sarah is somehow the worst and also best thing that has happened to him lately. Worst, because it’s probably not exactly sustainable to have a thing for your roommate.
Best, because she’s not moving. Dream has shoved his toes under Nick’s legs, seeing Sarah’s closeness but still craving attention. He keeps making faces at Nick, and he would be more pissed off at Dream if Sarah weren't so into this movie. The man has never been subtle, and it’s really annoying at times like this.
The end credits start rolling, and Dream immediately starts getting up from the couch, headed to his bedroom to preemptively set up the MCC practice call. Nick waits for Sarah to get up, feeling stupid for missing the warmth of her side as soon as it leaves him. She walks into the kitchen and swipes 2 Red Bulls from the fridge, handing one off to him before cracking the second one open for herself.
“Long night for you too>” Nick asks. Sarah nods as she chugs half the can, finishing with a loud exhale.
“I have an exam tomorrow, so I’m cramming. Have fun with your blocks and boys.” Nick laughs as Sarah gives a lazy peace sign. Panda and Poppy pad behind her, as if they know her room will be the quietest to sleep in tonight.
*****
“George, I am begging you to shut the fuck up for 2 sec-”
Dream’s sentence is interrupted by another inhuman scream from George, and Nick laughs even harder, still giggling at the last ridiculous noise from his British friend. Nick screams, partially to add to the chaos, and partially because he just nailed this Ace Race map. He doesn’t even notice his phone lighting up in his slap-happy, 4:00AM chaos.
“He’s popping off, your honor,” Karl chimes in, over-the-top British accent just encouraging George’s boisterous laughter and Nick’s rise in volume. He’s so wrapped up in raining on Dream’s grumpy parade that he doesn’t hear his bedroom door open. Nick yelps in surprise as a hand touches his shoulder.
He slides his headphones around his neck and swivels his chair, eyes immediately locating the source of the hand. Sarah is standing in his room, eyes half-open, shirt pressed into weird wrinkles from the folds of the sheets. He’s suddenly very thankful he stopped streaming about an hour ago, facecam long turned off.
“It is 4 o’clock in the morning and I have class in 6 hours. Please, dude.” Nick’s stomach drops as he realizes just how loud he must have been. Him and Sarah share a wall between their bedrooms, but he has some pretty good soundproofing on his walls; him and Dream both decided to invest once they knew they’d be getting a roommate.
“I’m so sorry Sarah, I--” Sarah holds a hand up, and Nick immediately closes his mouth, terrified.
“It’s fine, I am just too tired to have a full-on conversation right now. Goodnight.” Sarah turns and shuffles out of the room, softly closing the door behind her. Nick is frozen in his chair, shame rooting him to the spot. He knows Sarah probably isn’t mad, he does. But he can still feel the guilt twisting his stomach in knots, anxious warmth flooding his fingertips.
“. . .everything good over there, Sapnap?” Nick’s bones well and truly lock up as Karl’s voice hesitantly floats up from his still-abandoned headphones.
He never fucking muted in Discord.
Nick’s next thought is, thank fuck for Dream, as his roommate wheezes into his microphone at some ridiculous meme George probably sent him. Karl quickly abandons his question in favor of some shared joke, and Nick steals the moment to breathe and take a look at his phone.
Sarah :): hey can u keep it down pls & thank u - Delivered at 3:47
Sarah :): nick I’m srs I have my 10am tom - Delivered at 3:59
Sarah :): nick - Delivered at 4:14
Nick rubs his face in his hands, and he realizes just how hot his room feels, pausing to pull his sweatshirt over his head, shaking out both his hair and the guilty feelings for tonight.
You’ll talk to her tomorrow, and it’s gonna be fine, he thinks, sliding his headphones back into place. The other 3 have moved on to arguing about who gets what Hogwarts house skin, and Sapnap chimes in carefully, taking care not to yell or even really raise his voice at all. He says his goodnights about an hour later and goes to bed, fully knowing he’ll miss Sarah in the morning.
*****
As he suspects, he wakes up around 12:30. Nick yawns and gets out of bed, physically cringing as he recalls what happened between him and Sarah last night. He trudges downstairs, resigning himself to a poptart for. . . brunch? He opens the fridge to find an apple or something with a hint of nutritional value, and grins once he sees the middle shelf.
In Sarah’s handwriting, there’s a sticky note with “Nick :D” stuck onto a small tupperware. He smiles and cracks the lid, the smell of fajita vegetables and breakfast sausage filing his nostrils. On the counter, the coffee pot is pulled from the counter, and upon an experimental lift, Nick finds it still half-full.
He still decides to go out and buy a case of Sarah’s favorite energy drink and a new bag of KitKats as an apology for the night before. He leaves them outside her bedroom door, taking note of the “Working!” message on her whiteboard she attached there last week. He decides to use the same sticky note from his omelet fillings, flipping it over to write “Sarah” on the back, drawing a haphazard little flower with his red sharpie instead of a smiley face.

prologue.
chapter 1.
ii. “I’m in trouble, I’m an addict.”
It’s been a little over a week since Sarah moved in, and Nick is already feeling pretty comfortable with the routine the three of them have established. Well, routine is a generous way of putting it, seeing as how both him and Dream have made no effort to repair their disjointed sleep schedules in years, so why would they start now?
Still, it is nice to smell coffee in the morning when Sarah gets up for class, and even nicer when Nick actually drags himself out of bed and sits at the table, slowly waking up as Sarah makes 2 portions of whatever she made herself for breakfast that morning. Nick never gives input when she asks what he wants, and he’s even started to like the surprise every morning. He’s not sure if he’s become even less picky than he already was, or if watching Sarah pad around the kitchen in her red poppy-patterned slippers just makes everything taste better. Either way, he’s not complaining as Sarah slides a plate with scrambled eggs, bacon, and fruit across the table to him, settling in her usual seat across from him.
“Any big plans today?” He’s used to the question; she asks every morning, but it never fails to make him crack a smile. He shakes his head.
“Nothing big, just practicing for MCC later. I think we’re looking at Halloween skins today too.” Sarah’s face lights up.
“Are you guys gonna match?” Nick hadn’t thought about it until now, but the look on Sarah’s face alone is enough to convince him. She’s leaned forward, hair almost falling into her breakfast as she eagerly awaits his answer, child-like excitement shining from her eyes.
“Yeah, that’s the plan,” he says, groaning inwardly as he anticipates Dream’s whining that is sure to result from this. It’s not going to be hard to decide on skins. Karl will likely have some bookmarked already, George will go along with most things, and Nick usually has similar taste to Karl. The only obstacle is Dream’s dedication to his dumb skin, but Nick knows they can probably convince him. Especially if George is on board. “We haven’t looked at any yet, I just hope Dream isn’t a little bitch about it.” He rolls his eyes, and notices Sarah do the same as they share a laugh.
“A little bitch about what?” Dream’s indignant voice sounds from the top of the stairs, and Nick again wonders how he can hear so well even with his habit of falling asleep with earbuds in. Dream’s grumpy, half-asleep face is scrunched into a pout as he swipes a piece of bacon from Nick’s plate.
“Your stupid skin. It’s Halloween man, you’ve gotta match with us.” Nick throws a small piece of runny egg at the taller man’s back, and both him and Sarah stifle laughs as it sticks to his sweatshirt.
“You’re an idiot.” Dream pours the last of the coffee into his mug, slumping into the seat beside Sarah. He yawns, slumping onto Sarah’s shoulder. Nick involuntarily clenches his jaw, jealousy flaring a small fire in the base of his neck. He immediately relaxes once he realizes how ridiculous he’s being, clearing his throat awkwardly.
“Whatever, idiot.” Dream snorts into his coffee mug as Sarah rolls her eyes and shrugs Dream off of her to make him a plate of food.
“Good one.”
“Shut up.”
“No.”
Sarah interrupts the exchange as she places her dirty dishes in the sink. “Both of you shut up, and figure out who’s gonna do the dishes. I have class in 20 minutes, don’t knock on my door for the next 2 hours please,” she says, dragging out the vowel as she heads up the stairs, freshly filled water bottle in hand.
“It’s Tuesday, I’m making tacos for dinner, you’re on dish duty today, yeah?” Dream asks, grinning as Nick groans and theatrically drops his forehead onto the table. “Learn how to cook and you won’t have to clean all the time,” Dream says, rising to put his plate in the sink.
“Why would I do that if I have you guys here?” Nick whines, begrudgingly getting up from his chair and starting to fill the sink with soapy water. “Speaking of, dude, you’ve got to let Sarah make the salsa. I can’t handle your wet onion bullshit anymore, I’ve been enlightened.”
Dream flicks soapy water into Nick’s face, feigning annoyance. “Not my fault I can’t handle spicy food, it hurts my mouth.”
“Dude, they’re onions. They’re not even spicy,” Nick retorts, elbowing Dream out of his way. “Besides, I added wimpy salsa to the Instacart order this week, you’ll be fine. It’s basically pasta sauce.” Dream pouts, but Nick knows he isn’t offended. Nick and Sarah often gang up on him for his weak spice tolerance; honestly, Nick is just thankful he didn’t have to learn how to cook just to get some more damn flavor into this house.
“Thank you,” Dream says reluctantly, turning to the fridge to examine said salsa. Nick finishes up the dishes, and he and Dream plan a time for the MCC practice stream later, sending a quick message into their Discord group chat with Karl and George.
*****
Panda is banished from Sarah’s room while she’s in class, as he tends to walk over her keyboard and cause tech issues. Nick spends the rest of the morning on the couch, slowly working through his email inbox, but mostly messing with the cats and his laser pointer. It must have been longer than Nick realized, because he hears Sarah groan loudly, and she flops onto the couch a few moments later, face down in the cushions.
“I hate midterms.” Her statement is muffled by the fabric, and Nick laughs softly as she sits back up, blue-light glasses smudged after being pressed into her face. “This prof really wants us to do a group project and an essay for the midterm, and didn’t even make the deadlines different. God.”
Nick cringes. “Group projects are the worst.”
“Right? I would rather just bust that shit out myself, but no, I have to corral 3 other morons and my grade depends on them.” Her voice rises, exasperation and stress making her hand gestures even more expressive than usual.
“Is there anything I--we can do to help?” Nick asks, and Sarah bestows him a small, grateful smile.
“Not directly. . . but can I pick the movie tonight?” Nick grins and nods. Taco Tuesday also usually involves watching a movie while they eat, a time for all 3 roomies to catch up from their week of conflicting schedules and erratic sleep patterns. Lately, Nick has monopolized the TV and forced them all to watch Death Note together.
“We have MCC practice later tonight, but we should definitely have time for a movie.” Nick pauses, laughing to himself. “Actually, it's best you pick anyways, because I’ve definitely already volunteered you to make salsa for Taco Tuesday.”
“Taco Tuesday?” Sarah’s smiling again, and Nick takes his opportunity to make her laugh again.
“Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like, and I need you to save me from Dream’s lame-ass taste buds.” As he describes Dream’s aversion to onions and questionable prepping methods as a result, Sarah is in stitches at his side. Nick is hyper-aware of every little touch she gives him as she laughs, and he can feel his skin sing when she places a hand on his shoulder to steady herself.
“I’m sorry, he soaks them in water?” she asks, voice rising in between giggles. “Yeah, I’m glad you volunteered me, damn.” Sarah wipes her eyes with her sweatshirt sleeve, oblivious to what Nick thought was a glaringly obvious blush spreading from the back of his neck to his hairline. He can still feel her phantom fingertips burning through his t-shirt, heartbeat increasingly frantic as Sarah’s legs brush his minutely every so often.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” Nick actually welcomes Dream’s sarcasm as his roommate’s voice interrupts his imminent cardiac event. “You assholes done laughing at me or am I canceling Taco Tuesday?”
Sarah rolls her eyes theatrically at Nick before turning to Dream and lightly punching nis arm. “Relax, what, George not text you back fast enough or something?” It’s Dream’s turn to blush, and Nick jumps on the chance to embarrass him further.
“Nah, he probably went to sleep without waiting for a goodnight call,” he says, ducking to avoid the pillow Dream half-assedly threw at his head.
“Leave me alone,” Dream whines, making a show of pouting as he walks into the kitchen. He can only complain so much; for the last 2 weeks, Dream has been a lot more private in his time with George: closing his bedroom door before getting on their Discord calls, checking his phone more obsessively than usual, and seemingly having his Twitter notifications on, to name a few. Nick has suspected something for years, but knows they will come to him when they’re ready.
*****
“So, Dream is still obsessed with George, huh?” Nick’s head snaps up, and he nearly chokes on his mouthful of toaster waffles. Sarah doesn’t even glance up from her phone, and Nick has no idea how to respond. It takes about 2 full minutes of silence before Sarah’s eyes flick over to him. She starts to laugh. “Oh come on, it’s obvious there’s something going on there.”
Sarah begins to explain how Dream began talking about George close to the beginning of senior year. How Dream started referencing him one day and just. . . never stopped.
“Yeah, none of us actually knew who he was outside of some guy he was friends with online, but none of us really played video games at the time, either.” Sarah shrugs. “Then our friend group kind of all went our separate ways after graduation, and Dream and I were pretty much the only ones who stayed in contact at all. And as you know, it wasn’t even that consistent until lately.”
Nick nods. It makes sense now, how comfortable Dream seems to be showcasing his closeness with George, even though Sarah is still very new to the apartment. He suspects this is also why he himself feels much more comfortable with Sarah than he normally would at this point in their living situation.
*****
Regardless, Dream clearly isn’t ready to talk about whatever this new development may be. Nick knows he’ll tell him when he’s ready; he always does.
Besides, he kind of has to now, Nick thinks ruefully to himself. Dream, ever the perceptive jerk that he is, had almost immediately picked up on Nick’s little crush on Sarah. Even though his friend had assured him that going for her wouldn’t mess up the roommate dynamic, Nick still feels incredibly hesitant to upset the balance of his life right now. So for now, he’s resigned himself to–before swearing Dream to secrecy–being her favorite roommate, instead.

Sunflower Feelings -- Sapnap x f!oc
Hi friends, mcyt fic debut here! This is a fic I am in the progress of writing for a friend, so please bear that in mind if you choose to read. Most aspects have been requested, I just also decided to upload here for feedback and funsies.
If you do read, I hope you enjoy and come back for more when I eventually have it! :D This is essentially Dream and Sapnap Get a Roommate: The Sitcom.
Friendly reminder that of course, this is both purely fictional and loosely based on content uploaded by these creators. Please respect both their and my boundaries by not sending/tagging creators.
prologue.
i. “I’ve just seen a face. . . she’s just the girl for me.”
Nick pulls into the driveway, happy with how his merch team meeting just went. It was exciting to take a look at some new designs, including some new Dream Team ones that Dream and George would also approve. He grabs the water bottle out of his cup holder, draining the last sip in the heat of a sunny, Florida evening. Nick thinks absently that Dream kind of has a point with keeping the inside of the house so cold, already feeling sweat bead on the back of his neck as he turns the car off and begins to key in the garage code. He ducks under the still-rising door, toeing his sneakers off as he approaches the door leading inside. Nick freezes as he hears Dream’s ridiculous laugh through the door, accompanied by an unfamiliar, unmistakably female voice.
In his meeting, long drive, and heat-induced haze, Nick had momentarily forgotten that Dream was picking Sarah up from her storage unit today. He takes a deep breath, trying to calm his suddenly racing heart. He physically shakes his head, muttering to himself.
“Don’t be nervous.” Nick squares his shoulders and opens the door, already feeling his face beginning to redden. Cursing his pale complexion, Nick smiles despite himself as he hears Dream yell out his name from the dining room table. Rounding the corner, he sees Dream and who he assumes is Sarah sitting at the table, chips and salsa half-eaten between the two of them. Nick automatically extends a hand, widening his smile as Dream’s friend stands to greet him as well.
“Hi, I’m Sarah, you must be Nick. It’s so nice to meet you.” Her voice is bright, and her eyes crinkle as she smiles with her entire face. Nick is immediately reminded of his favorite kind of sunshine; the kind that gently warms his skin first thing in the morning, Poppy purring at his side on the front porch. He laughs inwardly, thinking--Dream was too lame in high school to have had pretty friends--and realizes he’s been staring for a fraction of a second too long. Dream is raising his eyebrows while failing miserably to conceal the goddamn smirk spread across his face behind Sarah’s back, and Nick feels a familiar burn flare on his cheeks.
“Uh, sorry, yeah, that’s me.” Nick rolls his eyes inwardly, physically restraining himself from cringing at his own awkwardness. “Sorry, I’m a little foggy. . . been in meetings all morning,” he says, forcing a small laugh to dispel some of his own tension. He’s never been more thankful for Dream as the taller man shoves an unfamiliar black-and-white cat in his face, forcing a change in subject.
“Nick, shut up, meet Panda.” Sarah laughs, gently taking the cat from Dream and shoving an elbow in his ribs.
“Stop manhandling my cat.” She looks at Nick again, still smiling as he reaches out to pet the smaller cat’s head. “I know you have a little guy too, it’s about to get real confusing in here.” As if on cue, Nick feels Poppy slink in between his legs, rubbing her head up against his shins happily. He laughs, for real this time, as he realizes just how right Sarah is. The cats are colored nearly identically, down to the white “socks” and a large, almost perfectly circular black spot across both of their backs.
“Panda is a much more fitting name than Poppy,” Nick says, scratching Sarah’s cat under his chin. He purrs contentedly, and Nick looks back to Sarah and smiles. “It’s nice to meet you both.” Sarah smiles back, and Nick truly cannot tell if the warmth spreading over him is just him blushing again, or if it’s just how her sunny face feels. Either way, he’s been awake for far too many hours to care too much right now.
“We were gonna order some early dinner, thoughts?” Dream’s voice interrupts Nick’s inner monologue, and he realizes just how tired he is as even the idea of decision-making makes his head start to hurt.
“Actually, I’m pretty tired from like, talking all day, so I’m gonna go crash,” Nick says, suddenly nervous at the prospect of seeming rude. “Um, no offense Sarah, it’s not you, I just--”
“You have nothing to apologize for,” Sarah interjects, jerking her head towards the suitcase next to the stairs. “I’m also crashing early, which is why we’re ordering dinner at 4 o’clock. Totally understandable, we have plenty of time to get to know each other.” She grimaces halfway through her sentence, turning slightly to better address both boys at once. “Which, seriously, thank you so much for letting me stay here, this whole situation is so ridiculous and I’m so sor--”
It’s Nick’s turn to interrupt as he shakes his head emphatically. “You also don’t have to apologize, shit happens.” Sarah smiles gratefully as Dram echoes his sentiments. “For real though, goodnight guys.”
“Goodnight you fucking geezer.” Dream earns the bird from Nick as Sarah gives him a little wave. He scoops Poppy into his arms as he heads up the stairs, already feeling his eyelids droop. He doesn’t even have energy to shower, social battery completely drained as he collapses into bed sans jeans and hoodie. Poppy stretches lazily next to him as he quickly falls asleep, mind somewhat quiet for once after meeting Sarah went so well.
*****
“Yeah, sleep schedules aren’t a thing for him,” Dream says, laughing as he and Sarah move to the living room couch.
“Just gamer things,” Sarah says teasingly, as Dream rolls his eyes in response. They settle into a comfortable rhythm while ordering some burgers for dinner, reminiscing over old high school stories and catching up on life updates that were too long to text. Sarah goes upstairs with a full heart and stomach a few hours later, lazily unpacking her skincare products from her suitcase. The guest bathroom is close enough to Nick’s room she can hear quiet snores, almost completely muffled by the door. She thinks back to earlier, recalling his hand around hers, warm and comforting. She thinks the embarrassed flush to his cheeks as he stutters reminds her of flower petals, before physically shaking her head in the mirror.
“Chill,” Sarah whispers to herself. She finishes washing her face and brushes her teeth, all while decidedly not thinking about how cute her new roommate is. She finds Panda in the living room still, napping on Dream as he watches TV. Sarah flicks Dream’s forehead before picking up her cat, laughing at Dream’s indignant yelp as she calls a taunting “goodnight, sucker,” over her shoulder. She turns off the light and settles into bed, struggling to feel comfortable in her new bedroom despite Dream and Nick’s southern hospitality. She eventually falls asleep some time after she hears Dream shuffle upstairs, tossing fitfully as she adjusts to the sounds of the house settling.
*****
Sarah anticipates being the first one awake. Her more standard, college-by-day, virtual-executive-assistant-by-night routine forces a pretty normal circadian rhythm. Which is why, on this fine Sunday, Sarah finds herself awake in her new home at 7:30. She spends an hour laying in bed, lazily scrolling through TikTok and stroking Poppy’s soft fur.
It’s close to 9:00 as Sarah walks downstairs, a little more of her bathroom organized and seeking coffee as reward. She pauses as she locates the coffee grounds on her third guess, spoon poised over the shiny bag. Her silent question is answered surprisingly quickly as heavy footfalls and Poppy’s long-lost twin precede Nick’s presence in the doorway. He blinks blearily at the two cats as they brush past his feet, and Sarah suppresses a smile at her roommate’s apparent confusion. Nick’s hair is fluffier after her sleeps on it, and she really wants to fix that part sticking up in the back for him. . . what the hell.
Relax. Sarah chides herself inwardly as Nick seems to finally process her presence, face turning a light pink as his eyes immediately dart to the floor.
“Uh, sorry, I guess I’m not used to hearing a third person move around like. . . in the morning.” There’s an almost-giggle in his voice, and Sarah barely notices, as she’s too busy trying to remember if his voice was that deep when she met him yesterday? She clears her throat, forcing a small, nervous laugh.
“I don’t pretend to understand how y’all function, but that doesn’t matter. What does matter is how much coffee I am about to make, you gonna have some?” If she wanted to, Sarah could fist pump right now. Stuck the landing.
“Sure, thanks.” Nick’s voice is still husky with sleep, and Sarah busies her hands so she doesn’t have to look at his cute, tired little smile. As she starts the coffeemaker, she decides she also needs to make real food for breakfast because she feels awkward and food is an excellent icebreaker.
“I’m making myself a breakfast burrito with the leftover taco stuff. Want one?” Nick takes a long few seconds to process Sarah’s question, finally nodding “yes” as she begins to pull various tupperware from the fridge. The coffeemaker beeps as Sarah is toying with the stove, and Nick rushes to locate 2 mugs and pour them before she can. He stumbles over his own feet, almost spilling the open carton of creamer in the process. Sarah giggles and raises her coffee in thanks, clinking her steaming mug with his. She declines any help, so Nick sits back down at the table, letting his drink warm his hands.
“Any big plans for the day?” Sarah asks, frowning slightly as she studies the stove knobs, seemingly still dissatisfied with the temperature of her frying pan. Nick shakes his head.
“No, I had so many meetings yesterday I pretty much cleared my schedule today.” He shrugs, and Sarah turns to him as she begins warming the tortillas.
“I’m jealous. I took Friday off work to move since I don’t have class that day either, and I have so much schoolwork and work work to catch up on this week.” Nick shakes his head sympathetically as Sarah’s nose scrunches in disgust. “I wanted to get more unpacking done today, but I guess that’s not happening,” she says, sighing. “Speaking of, I should probably at least sort my work emails while I still have motivation so I don’t hate myself on Monday.” Sarah tops off her coffee as her thought trails off. Nick just watches as she finishes scrambling eggs and begins assembling the burritos, stuffed tortillas returning to the pan to crisp up.
“Sorry, space cadet over here,” Sarah says, laughing to herself as she slides the finished burritos onto 2 separate plates. She places one in front of Nick and the other across from him, and they eat in comfortable silence.

Please respect both their and my boundaries by not sending/tagging creators.
prologue: “I think I was blind before I met you.”
“Dream, she can’t just stay here for an indeterminate amount of time.” Nick’s arms are crossed defensively as his roommate rolls his eyes for the 3rd time.
“That’s literally exactly how you moved here.” Nick huffs forcefully, knowing he has a point. Dream starts speaking faster, seeing his opening. “Look, she’s an old friend who needs help. I haven’t talked to her in a while, valid, but most of my friends don’t even know what I look like and they’d do this for me, right? Like you know they would, you would if the roles were revers--” Nick holds a hand up, stopping the barrage of words tumbling from Dream’s mouth.
“You don’t have to read me the Riot Act.” Nick sighs. He glances at the coffee table, where he can see Dream has taken the time to print out his old Discord messages. He doesn’t even have to look closely at the small pile of papers to know they’re probably in chronological order, too. “This clearly means a lot to you. If you trust her, then I guess so do I.” Nick hasn’t even finished his sentence before Dream is grinning and grabbing his shoulders in a one-armed hug.
“Hey, I appreciate it man. Sarah’s great, I’m sure you two will get along.” Nick nods, nudging Dream’s stomach with his elbow.
“You’re a good friend.” Dream blushes at Nick’s sincerity, scrabbling to grab the Discord printouts. “Although if you wanted another roommate, you could’ve just asked instead of building an entire argument for something I obviously would’ve said yes to.” Dream snorts, shaking his head.
“Nah, I would’ve asked. I just want to help her out, for old time’s sake.” Nick nods, following Dream into his room. “Seriously, thank you.” Dream straightens from where he was practically folded over his shredder, stretching his arms up and over his head. “What do you wanna do for dinner?”
*****
After watching Superbad over some Mediterranean food, Dream retreats back to his room, muttering about editing and something that sounded suspiciously like “George.” Nick takes the kitchen trash out, his black-and-white cat padding quietly behind. He closes the outside trash can and walks back into the living room, scooping Poppy into his arms and settles back onto the couch. He absently strokes the cat’s soft fur, thinking back to his and Dream’s conversation earlier today.
“Are you excited to have a new friend?” Nick’s fingers find Poppy’s belly, scratching gently as she purrs in response.
*****
“--and she has a cat, which you were saying that Poppy needs a friend the other day, and--”
“Dude, slow down.” Nick rakes a hand through the mess of hair on the back of his neck, struggling to keep up with his best friend’s babbling. Dream had come into the living room just seconds ago, papers in hand, seemingly armed and ready with an argument before Nick even knew what they were talking about. The taller man nods, taking a theatrically loud inhale through his nose and then exhaling through his mouth, placing the papers in his hand on the coffee table.
“Okay, sorry. Let me start over. My old friend Sarah from high school lives a few hours away. Her apartment complex was fixing the elevators in her building and the construction company fucked it up, so now the building isn’t safe to live in and won’t be for a while. Her lease is up in 3 months, and she has nowhere to go until then.”
“And she wants to move into the empty bedroom.” Nick cocks an eyebrow, already hesitant about living with someone he doesn’t already know.
“Not like, permanently, just until she can either move back into her apartment--”
“--and we don’t know when that will be,” Nick interjects, deadpan. He knows that Dream knows he’s uncomfortable with the idea. Nick is shy, and even after knowing Dream for so long, he had to adjust for the first few weeks of living with him. He still didn’t feel used to it sometimes. “--except that it will likely be 3 months.” Dream rolls his eyes, hands beginning to wave even more expressively than usual.
“Well, yeah, but, she’s looking for places to move, this isn’t gonna be permanent--”
“She doesn’t have another place lined up?” Nick interrupts again, prompting another eye roll from Dream. He’s not even mad; clearly, this means a lot to his friend. Dream has always had an expressive face, and right now this is the most earnest he’s seen his roommate in a long time.
“Look, I know this isn’t an ideal situation.”
*****
Nick looks around, imagining him and Dream’s surroundings with another, unknown addition. He releases Poppy, standing and moving to fill his water bottle in the kitchen. He looks around again, thinking absently. Will Sarah have a problem with how the kitchen cabinets are arranged? Will she want to do her own grocery shopping or be a part of the weekly Instacart argument? Will her cat also want to eat in the dining room like Poppy?
Nick gets ready for bed, more questions filling his head as he turns his light out and gets under the covers. Poppy jumps onto the end of his bed, familiar weight settling herself right on his toes. Nick falls asleep a few hours later, tossing and turning to dreams of feral cats and strange, rude girls named Sarah.
