“Natural & safe” crystal deodorant..
or, crystallized by-product of potassium ALUMINUM sulfate?
For the past 15 yrs it’s been an apparent struggle to find a natural deodorant that works & isn’t harmful by way of baking soda allergy or long-term adverse effects from aluminum absorption. It would seem that the public has a habit of mistaking “naturally-occuring” processes as yielding natural, safe by-products. This isn’t always the case, obviously, but it’s understood why a salt rock would seem harmless.
Crystal deodorants, Thai crystal rocks, etc. - are created from the derivative substance Potassium aluminum sulfate. In several studies, specifically addressing Santa Cruz Biotechnology’s assessment, Alum is “a naturally occurring mineral that has been used in a multitude of applications from printing to electrolytic copper plating. Aluminum has been implicated in either formation or stabilization of beta-pleated amyloid plaques which lead to pathologies such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease; these beta sheet aggregates show similarity to amyloid plaques formed via the prion protein (mad cow disease). Alum can be used to probe the role of aluminum in these pathologies and is also used as a catalyst in the synthesis of ammonia, as mordant in staining with carmine, eosine or hematoxylin, and as a hardening agent in microscopy.”
Considering the make-up of this crystal deodorant, it can be said that it brings us back to the original health concern - absorption of a harmful metal, aluminum, which is one of the many metals our body does not contain. & So therefore - “just because it’s naturally occurring, doesn’t mean it belongs inside of our bodies.” (Shouts to @Sunrise_Chaser)
Many articles or blogs will contain information revering Potassium aluminum sulfate’s large-sized molecules, because it’s said to be too large for skin absorption. While this may be immediately true, the leaching aspect of absorption means that the absorption of this harmful metal is still inevitable. There are even some articles that swear up & down that because you can find this material labeled as “Alum,” that it’s not actually aluminum. Which is satirically false. It is a form of aluminum. So where does this leave us on the healthiest, natural deodorant search?
Honestly… back to baking soda or lemon juice/ coconut oil for those w/ baking soda allergies, it seems.
There have been inquiries about clays & activated charcoal, regarding their effectiveness in deodorants. My answer to that (Aliensauce Detox Deo’ contains bentonite & rhassoul clays) is that both activated charcoal & clays like bentonite are negatively charged, causing positively charged toxins & gas to bond to it. Though some impurities do cause odor, the main bacterial cause of body odor is not neutralized by clays & activated charcoal. Oftentimes when you see a brand using activated charcoal in their deodorant, it is still used in conjunction with baking soda. Because activated charcoal detoxes/cleanses, where as baking soda changes the skin mantle’s pH level & neutralizes odor.
I post all this to say, what is the truth? How are crystal deodorants safe when the active derivative is harmful & remains in the final product? What do those with baking soda allergies do, then?
I plan on furthering my research on this topic (got a lot of loved ones who need baking soda-free deo’), because it’s been over a decade of experimentation by the cosmetics/DIY communities, and it’s time we be a bit more transparent & frank about the differences between what is “naturally-occuring” & what is safe. The two aren’t naturally inclusive. I figure the misinformation spread online is due to a lack of knowledge on common chemical compounds seen in the cosmetic industry.
So all in all - it can be concluded that since Alum does contain Aluminium, it’s possible that an amount will be absorbed through the skin. I’ve yet to come across scientific text/literature that concretely supports or denies this observation. A positive use of this compound that I’ve read about is using it to treat potable & waste water. Alum (in its acidic liquid form) is used to form “flocs,” a loosely clumped mass of fine particles, when clarifying water.
That being said, safety of Alum is a relative term. It depends on its use, dosage, background contaminants, surrounding catalysts, and many other factors. Studies have shown that Aluminium can be accumulated by the body, & thusly has been linked to several degenerative brain & bone diseases. However, current medical/scientific literature is still defining mechanisms of said pathway and the reactants that contribute to its accumulation.
So, do you know the secret to the best natural deodorant in the world?
Me neither, but we’re getting closer :) - the more we share awareness.
With love, light & efficacy,
Sasha Anniyah

It’s 90 degrees out. Help yourself to some energy + cooling + improved digestion, over ice. :)
So my fiancée made Lapsang Spearmint tea the other day and I fell in love with the smokiness of the Lapsang & the invigorating/refreshing feeling from the Spearmint. She inspired me this summer to make more cooling recipes. I thought.. how can I broaden the flavors while improving its effects on the body? Considering the caffeine, I wanted this refreshing iced tea to help with indigestion. Also considering it’s hell outside, I wanted to encourage cooling activity. So I added a couple yummy herbs & seeds to get this tea movin’. ^_^
Using distilled water, all loose leaf herbs & seeds, I made 64oz. of iced tea. You usually want to steep 2g of tea to every 8oz of water (sorry for mixing forms of measurement, just how my mind works lol). - 5g Lapsang Souchong - 5g Spearmint - 2.5g Hibiscus - 1.5g Fennel Seeds - 1g Orange Peel - 1.5g Lemon Peel
You can steep from 6 to 24hrs, depending on how strong you’d like it. But be mindful to the time and taste along the way, so as to avoid your tea from becoming tannic from steeping the Lapsang for too long. Enjoy & stay cool !
Here’s some fun facts :)
- Lapsang Souchong : A black tea (Camellia sinensis) originally from the Wuyi region of the Chinese province of Fujian. Famous for its smoky aroma and flavor.
- Hibiscus : Hibiscus is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. Consuming hibiscus tea provides relief from high blood pressure and high cholesterol, as well as digestive system, immune system, and inflammatory problems.
- Spearmint : Improves memory, boosts immune system, anti-inflammatory & anti-fungal properties
- Fennel : Fennel, Foeniculum vulgare, is an aromatic plant used widely for both culinary & medicinal purposes. The seeds of the fennel plant have an aniselike aroma, often featured in Indian & Middle Eastern cooking. Fennel is used to improve digestion, relieve flatulence, treat hypertension and treat respiratory and gastrointestinal disorders.
- Lemon & Orange Peel : For additional deliciousness & anti-oxidant benefits of both citrus oils.

Two birds, one stone. Or better yet, one dish.
Adrenal Fatigue & Acne. Yep, they’ve both got 3 things in common. Hormonal imbalance, stress & inflammation. All sounds pretty common, right?
So, Adrenal Fatigue. What is it and why do so many of us (especially in the service industry in NYC) have it without knowing what it is?
Adrenal fatigue is a term used to describe a list of nonspecific symptoms, such as body aches, fatigue, nervousness, sleep disturbances and digestive problems. The term shows up in popular health books and on alternative medicine websites, but isn’t an accepted medical diagnosis (surprise, surprise).
Your adrenal glands produce a myriad of hormones that are essential to life. The medical term adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease) refers to inadequate production of one or more of these hormones as a result of an underlying disease.
Signs and symptoms of adrenal insufficiency may include:
Fatigue
Body aches
Unexplained weight loss
Low blood pressure
Lightheadedness
Loss of body hair
Skin discoloration (hyperpigmentation)
Adrenal insufficiency can be diagnosed by blood tests and special stimulation tests that show inadequate levels of adrenal hormones. Unnecessary supplementation can be harmful, so it’s imperative to see a physician and have them run proper tests to determine your adrenal status.
Alright, now that we’ve got all that the FDA wants us to say out of the way…. let’s talk about how simple foods like Brazilian nuts & Black rice can provide our diets with the necessary minerals & vitamins to reduce inflammation & hormonal imbalance within our bodies, which lead to more severe & chronic issues. Think, thyroid gland - produces a vast range of important hormones in which your whole body benefits by maintaining its healthy function. Ever notice the increase in how many people, especially women, are experiencing thyroid dysfunction in recent times? Even medical diagnosis & treatment have almost been at a loss for many of the dysfunctions arising with the thyroid gland in the last 5-10 years. This tells us what?
Searching for the silver bullet to the symptoms of a long-standing problem, won’t make your ACTUAL problem sit down. Or better yet, leave.
Integrative/Complimentary/Alternative medicine have all been looked down upon by the medical community, when it should be embraced & INTEGRATED (Tell Bill Nye I said “what’s good?”). What we make a habit of putting into our bodies surely comes to the surface when our body is coming undone or losing alignment. It’s hard to pinpoint what works and what doesn’t when it comes to diet, unless you put in time & consistency. I will admit that 2 Brazilian nuts & a cup of OJ first thing in the morn’ definitely gives me an immediate immune system boost that I feel almost instantaneously, but that can’t be the end all be all of course. This has to be consistent. & Homeopathically would be best (micro-dosing).
Raw Brazilian nuts are exceptionally good for your health. In many ways, their benefits are due to their high content of the mineral selenium. Selenium is essential to a variety of very important processes within the human body. We must consume small amounts of it on a daily basis in order to stay in good health. Raw Brazilian nuts make for one of the most delicious ways to get your daily fix of this nutrient. They’re also almost the only way for vegans to get this element as other food sources of selenium are fish, shrimp, beef, and turkey. Fortunately, unlike with animal sources, the mineral from the nuts doesn’t break down during cooking (which is awesome since I roasted these babies before tossing ‘em in the salad).
Food To Live’s statement on the importance of selenium in Brazilian nuts: “Note that some whole grains also contain selenium. However, they lose over 60% of its originally meager content during the processing. Brazil nuts are, without a doubt, the best plant-based source of the element. In order to stay healthy, an adult should consume 55 mcg selenium per day. Considering the level of it in these extraordinary nuts, eating two pieces a day would get you the necessary boost. Selenium is so important for the general wellbeing because it’s an extremely potent antioxidant. In fact, this particular element is necessary to ensure the function of enzymes directly responsible for removing toxins from the body. It’s very wise to combine your Brazil nuts raw snack with foods rich in vitamin C, because these same enzymes are responsible for the recycling of this element. Therefore, selenium enhances the antioxidant effect of vitamin C. The other vitally important function of the mineral that makes eating Brazil nuts regularly a smart idea is its effect on the thyroid gland. Another enzyme that contains selenium is affecting the transformation of a thyroid hormone T4 into T3, which is more active. The hormonal balance within a human body is extremely delicate, and once it gets out of alignment, the negative effects can spread to every system. Therefore, you should always do your best to maintain this precarious balance. Leading a healthy lifestyle and eating a well-balanced diet are the best ways to go about it. Studies indicate that eating 2-4 Brazil nuts a day is perfectly safe, as this ‘dose’ doesn’t carry the risk of selenium overload. According to the National Academy of Sciences, the maximum safe level of daily selenium intake is 400 mcg.”
As an acne treatment, selenium needs to work synergistically with Vitamin E & Zinc. Selenium helps treat acne through protecting other antioxidants, increasing the body’s overall antioxidant levels which are proven to decrease inflammation that contributes to acne. Considering the powerful capability of selenium to increase antioxidant effects, it makes sense that this recipe including Brazilian nuts also included Black rice (packed with Vitamin E & anthocyanin). While whole grain red rice and brown rice also contain beneficial antioxidants, only black rice contains anthocyanin (a blue, purple or red flavonoid that helps to repair damaged cells and promote the growth of new and healthy cells while giving protection against free radicals). I use both black and white rice for the rice water in Aliensauce’s Alien Dew Toner, for all of these reasons. Anthocyanins and other polyphenols help the human immune system to work more efficiently against all type of infections & modulate inflammation - decreasing primary and secondary tissue damage. Primary being the damage generated by the immune response itself, and secondary being the damage caused by the original injury.
Now finally, the recipe which I acquired & tweaked a bit from the same company from which I purchased 2 lbs of raw Brazilian nuts, Food To Live. Along with the sesame oil used in the dressing, the black rice & Brazilian nuts were stars of this dish as all of the ingredients synergistically worked to provide the minerals & vitamins necessary for healthy hormonal balance & nutrient supplementation – leading to radiant skin, a strengthened immune system & overall energy boost. Adrenal fatigue & acne, who?
Brazilian Nut & Black Rice Salad:
1 cup black rice (cook according to package instructions)
10 mushrooms of your choosing (sliced)
3 tablespoons of fresh coriander roots (sliced)
½ brown onion (diced)
1 handful fresh baby spinach
1 handful fresh basil leaves
1 handful coriander leaves (chopped)
1-2 handfuls Brazil nuts (roasted)
1 fresh jalapeno (sliced with the seeds removed)
Dressing Ingredients:
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon agave
½ tablespoon lime juice
¼ teaspoon ginger (minced)
1 clove garlic (minced)
½ jalapeno (minced, seeds removed)
Sesame oil (as much as necessary)
Instructions:
Cook the rice. To do this you need to rinse it thoroughly, bring to a boil, and cook for about 30-40 minutes. The length of cooking depends on the type of rice you use. You should consider rinsing the rice after it’s cooked to remove any leftover starches.
Cook the onion in a pan, then add the mushrooms and cook until they soften. Use the kind of oil you prefer. When cooked, set the mushrooms and onions on a paper towel so that the extra oil drains off them.
Mix the dressing ingredients in a blender or just whisk them together in a bowl.
Mix all the ingredients together into a delicious salad. You can serve it topped with noodles, either cold or warm.
The Mahi Mahi, I simply seasoned with salt/pepper/cayenne, dusted with paprika/flour & pan-seared in grape seed oil & savory/thyme butter (also all full of antioxidant properties).
Because, healthy and delicious belong together. Don’t they? Of course they do, now let’s hit all the birds.

Greetings, loves.
It’s been 10 months since I’ve started this journey with Aliensauce & I’m happy to announce its LLC status established & moving forward to take on bigger & better projects with community in mind.
It’s been such an honor serving you all with what I love to do… so for Aliensauce’s 1st year Anniversary on June 4th 2017, I want to give back a small token of appreciation to my loyal repeat customers. :)
As we move into the summertime around then (let the weather tell it), I’m keeping the glare out of faces with Aliensauce “dad” caps with unusually long brims (4.33 inches), lol. I hand painted the first few which I’ll probably don, along with some other sisters of mine who aren’t too fancy to wear hand-painted hats lol. But come June, these babies will have embroidered logos & will go out to *11* of my most loyal customers, across the U.S. I’m not too keen on the idea of selling apparel, so consider it a gift from me to you for your many seeds sown into a budding & blossoming vision that is Aliensauce.
Announcement of the awesome eleven will be posted on May 28th, a Sunday. Hats will then be mailed out the next day. Post yourselves wearing them & I’ll make sure to throw you free samples of the latest & greatest of Aliensauce with your next order. :)
With love, light & efficacy,

😌👽🌿💫
For my AlienSerum lovers out there. 👽🌿 You should be receiving your serum samples soon ! So I wanted to share how to get the most out of your sample. :)
How you use the sauce: Cleanse & then tone your face. It’s to be applied on cleansed skin with a sunscreen(although this serum contains carrot seed oil, a naturally powerful SPF) over it in the daytime, and with a moisturizer appropriate with your skin type in the nighttime before bed.
- There are many steps you can take between cleansing/toning, like steaming/exfoliating/then a mask. This is ideal for a full skin-care regimen, but not absolutely necessary each time you wash your face. Toning is important, because it regulates your skin’s acid mantle, returning it to a safe level of about 5.5pH after soap may have it above 7 (too alkaline). After toning your skin, however, and before putting on moisturizer.. is when you’d apply a nice thin layer of Alienserum onto your entire face & neck. Serums are lightweight moisturizers that penetrate deeper to deliver active ingredients into your skin. You want to let it dry & settle for about 2-3 min before applying your favorite moisturizer (Soon to be a moisturizer made by Aliensauce ;) ). The results are softer yet firm & smoother skin, refined pores & increased skin elasticity. You can feel the difference in that your skin will feel so moisturized as the serum and moisturizer work together to keep skin hydrated and nourished by effectively delivering brilliant minerals, vitamins & earthly essences deep into the epidermis. Can be used everyday until bottle is done, likely up to a week or two. Best kept in refrigerator although there is a preservative to keep it shelf-stable for quite some time (a month or so). It has a very viscous, almost jelly-like consistency due to Aloe Gel + Sea Kelp Bio ferment ingredients. You’re going to love the results. 😌🌬🌿👽💞💫
Ingredients: Aloe Vera Gel, Purified water, Sea Kelp Bioferment, Niacinamide* (Vitamin B3 + water-soluble vitamin of the B complex occurring in various animal and plant tissues) , Hyaluronic serum stock* (Hyaluronic acid + purified/distilled water), Glycerin, Cera Bellina, Mango Butter, Rosehip oil, Evening Primrose oil, Sea Buckthorn oil, Papaya oil, Kiwi Seed oil, Manuka-infused Propolis honey, Vitamin E, L-ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Ferulic Acid (anti-oxidant & stabilizer - used to extend the life & effectiveness of Vitamin C), 100% pure Lavender essential oil, Optiphen Plus* ( a paraben and formaldehyde-free preservative; used to prevent harmful bacterial growth due to the presence of water).

AlienSerum👽: Sooo, who trusts me with their face? 😏👽 - Monday I’ll have a few serums I’d like a few loved ones to try & get their feedback after about 2 weeks of regular use. It’s to be applied on cleansed skin with a sunscreen(although this serum contains carrot seed oil, a naturally powerful SPF) over it in the daytime, and with a moisturizer appropriate with your skin type in the nighttime before bed. They’ll come in ½ oz glass droppers & should last the entire 2 weeks considering the amount you use each time. Remember, serums are concentrated. You only need a very small amount to smooth over the entire of your face. :) Email your name & shipping address to: [email protected] I only have 15-20 serums to distribute, so it’ll be on a first email/first serve basis. 😉🌿 • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Ingredients: Aloe Vera Gel, Purified water, Sea Kelp Bioferment, Niacinamide* (Vitamin B3 + water-soluble vitamin of the B complex occurring in various animal and plant tissues) , Hyaluronic serum stock* (Hyaluronic acid + purified/distilled water) , Rosehip oil, Evening Primrose oil, Sea Buckthorn oil, Papaya oil, Kiwi Seed oil, Manuka-infused Propolis honey, 100% pure Lavender essential oil, Optiphen Plus* ( a paraben and formaldehyde-free preservative; used to prevent harmful bacterial growth due to the presence of water).
On Hyaluronic Acid: “• Hydration - Able to hold up to 1000 times its molecular weight in water, hyaluronic acid penetrates the skin and binds skin cells to water, infusing all layers of the skin with valuable, rejuvenating moisture. • Humectant - After infusing the epidermis with valuable moisture, hyaluronic acid continues to draw moisture in from the surrounding environment to provide lasting hydration benefits. • Lipid barrier enhancement - Hyaluronic acid fortifies the skin’s natural barriers to lock moisture in for an even more dramatic hydrating effect. • Increased resilience - By enhancing the skin’s natural barriers, the skin is better able to defend itself against environmental age-factors and pollutants. • Tighter skin tone - As it fills the skin with moisture, Hyaluronic acid tightens the overall complexion and firms facial contours for a more youthful appearance. • Smoother texture - Much in the same way it tightens the skin, it also smoothes the texture of the skin for a silky smooth finish you can see and feel. • Less visible fine lines and wrinkles - Hyaluronic acid reduces the size and visibility of fine lines and wrinkles by stimulating skin cell production of collagen and elastin, two fibers that contribute to skin elasticity. • Stimulates skin cell regeneration - In addition to stimulating skin cell production of collagen, hyaluronic acid promotes skin cell regeneration for healthier cells and a more vibrant complexion. • Pigmentation - A description of hyaluronic acid wouldn’t be compete without mentioning ability to reduce and prevent age spots and pigmentation issues. • Clarity - By promoting proper moisture balance in the skin, hyaluronic acid prevents the over-production of oil that clogs pores to cause breakouts.

Yup so, the weather outside is trying to get frightful.. but these multivitamins are so delightful. :) I promised I’d give up my Vitamin C Creamsicle Gummy Bear recipe, so as we start to drop into 20 degree weather here in Brooklyn this weekend… I’ll do one better & include another vitamin-packed variation. Aliensauce Multivitamin Antioxidant Gummy Bears w/ Amla. Excellent for vitamin A & C supplementation & loaded with antioxidants, providing you with healthy, lustrous hair & glowing skin from the inside out ! & I swear by using Amla for both internal & topical use. The recipes are easy to make. Just takes a few materials, most you can find in your home. Get acquainted with kosher unflavored gelatin, as it is a necessary ingredient for the recipe to properly gel & keep its shape. Some vegetarians/vegans use carrageenan or agar-agar as a substitute, but I often hear it doesn’t hold up very well (understandably so, as gelatin is a substance that you can’t quite extract from a plant source). & don’t fret about a gummy bear mold tray, you can always make these in a sheet pan or shallow baking dish. Then you can just cut them into cute little squares or use a small clean bottle caps to make circles. Your creativity decides there. :) So let’s get to makin’ these delicious little pick me ups, yeah?
*Aliensauce Vitamin C Creamsicle Gummy Bears
- 2 oz Orange juice
- 1 oz Lemon juice
- 1 oz Pineapple juice
- 0.5 oz Pear purée
- 1 oz Vanilla Almond milk
- 2 oz Coconut Milk
- 2 T Raw honey
- 1/16 tsp vanilla extract
- 3.5 T grass fed, kosher gelatin
- 2 tsp of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
- 1 to 2 T of arrowroot powder, for dusting
OR
Aliensauce Multivitamin Antioxidant Gummy Bears w/ Amla (*Blue Dream: For healthy/shiny hair, glowing skin & radiant eyes)
- 2 oz Orange juice
- 1 oz Lemon juice
- 1.5 oz Pineapple juice
- 1 oz Blueberry purée
- 1 oz Vanilla Almond milk
- 2.5 oz Coconut Milk
- 3 T Raw honey
- 1/16 tsp vanilla extract
- 3.75 to 4 T grass fed, kosher gelatin
- 1 tsp of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C)
- 1 tsp of Amla powder
- 1 to 2 T of arrowroot powder, for dusting
*Directions:
• Squeeze all your fruit juices, fresh.
• Warm juices first in a double boiler (helps keep nutrients from cooking off due to high heat). Stir and combine for about 5 min
• Strain off purée & return liquids to double boiler.
• Sprinkle the gelatin on the surface of juice and allow it to “bloom” (the gelatin will disappear as it absorbs the liquid),
• Then whisk quickly so that the gelatin won’t become difficult to dissolve completely. Add little by little (let “bloom”), as you whisk to make this process easier.
• Once combined, whisk in the remaining ingredients (except for the ascorbic acid!) Combine completely.
• Remove from heat allow it to cool for 5 min & then whisk in the ascorbic acid.
• Take a dropper and fill your gummy bear trays. This recipe should yield you about 140 gummy bears, considering most commercial gummy tray molds.
• Freeze the gummies for 15-20 minutes.
• Sprinkle a thin layer of arrowroot powder (cornstarch is an alternative but most corn in the US is genetically modified, so.. there’s that. )
• Carefully pop out the gummies onto the layer of arrowroot powder.
• Dust them off so they’re just lightly dusted with arrowroot powder. This keeps the gummy bears from sticking together when you store them.
• Store in an air-tight sealed container and keep in the fridge for use for up to 7 days.
• 2 Vitamin C gummy bears a day gives you the sufficient daily ¼ tsp serving size of 1000mg vitamin C, along with all the nutrients of the fruit juices, coconut & almond milk.
( Aliensauce note: Depending on how many will be taken within the week - whether I’m sharing with family, friends, etc. - will determine whether I freeze a portion for later use or not. I would still suggest using it up within 3 weeks, just considering that flavor can change overtime in the freezer; especially with so much liquid content. To avoid “freezer-taste,” after the initial freezing for about 15-20 min.. take the trays out, make sure the gummies are a bit solid, and then sift some arrowroot powder over the top of the gummies(prevents them from sticking to wrap). Place cling wrap over the trays and seal well, if you’re keeping them in the trays. If you’ve already popped, dusted & stored them in a freezable sealed container, then you should be fine. )

I love this oil's healing & hydrating properties, especially around the lips and nose creases where I often dry out the most. 😌🌿 ------------------------------------ Meadowfoam seed oil: A light, fast-absorbing oil comparable to jojoba in terms of closely resembling human sebum. It has a highly nourishing, antioxidant composition which makes it ideal for dry, dehydrated or maturing skin. Bruja Bone Broth. ;) - Aliensauce👽🌿💕
Now, growing up in a West Indian household had me wondering why I didn’t get as sick with the common cold like my classmates/friends… I figured I ate enough vegetables, maybe. lol, but nah. Every meat dish we ate, I’d find my grandparents saving the bones, throwing them into a pot to slow-simmer for hours (even days).. beginning a new mineral-enriched meal, as we ate the original dish. As an adult, I now understand why the food we ate on Friday.. Mama Lyn began cooking Wednesday or Thursday. Because slow & low, tends to be the best cooking method when making infusions, tonics or any other matters of cooking where you want the maximum flavor, aroma and/or nutrients.
So, Bone broth. Yeah? Some don’t know what that is, but very simply put: Bone broth is a mineral rich infusion made by the process of boiling bones of HEALTHY animals along with vegetables, herbs & spices. It’s considered a culinary necessity in many successful restaurants & a very cost-effective tonic that you can add to your family’s diet. A lot of paleo-eaters are familiar with bone broth and are aware of how we benefit from it greatly.
Chicken soup is a big one for us in regards to medicinal cooking in the winter time, and many of us don’t even realize why. The bones of chicken, beef, lamb, fish, etc. provide invaluable amounts of minerals & amino acids(especially proline & glycine) – improving existing allergies, brain health, immune health & digestive health. Bone broth is wonderful for bone & tooth health as it contains excellent levels of magnesium, calcium & phosphorus content which remineralize teeth. & because of the high collagen content, it also supports hair/skin/joints & nails as well. For folks like me who’ve had gastritis & any other digestive issues (heartburn/GED, IBS, etc), bone broth from healthy animals really aid in gut health. For the days that I didn’t have much of an appetite or had trouble keeping food down, bone broth goes down so easy & is as soothing as it is delicious. The two amino acids & hard hitters I want to expound upon are Glycine & Proline, mainly because they respectively improve digestive & cardiovascular health(two of some of my main health focuses). Glycine aids in detoxification, regulation of blood sugar & gastric acid synthesis levels, pituitary gland secretion & even promotes mental alertness. Proline provides benefits by enabling blood vessel walls to release cholesterol buildups in your blood stream, minimizing potential blockages in your heart or surrounding vessels. Proline also assists in protein breakdown in the body, giving you strong healthy muscles. The collagen content is a benefit to speak highly of as it improves connective tissue which soothes joint aches, aids in muscle repair & even smooths out cellulite.
There’s very little to lose & so much to gain from making your own bone broth, considering the health advantages & the low cost of making it yourself. Think about it: - Purchasing a 10 oz cup from Brodo on 1st ave for $10 - Or, purchasing ready made store-bought broth from Amazon at a $1 an ounce when most of them are chock-full of MSGs & GMOs.
You can yield nearly 20 servings at 8 oz from using 2-3lbs of bones (beef, chicken, lamb, etc), at less than $2 a pound. Yep, I said it. What would cost you about $150-$200 could cost you less than $10 & that’s including your veggies, herbs & spices. From my experience, going to a reputable butcher shop in your area is your saving grace. The healthier the cattle (grass-fed), the easier it will be to make & all the more tasty. I generally hop over to Foster Sundry, because I know the butcher & can speak for the wonderful produce and meats they provide. So I trust their products & processes. The last batch I made was prepared with a little over 2 lbs of beef bones (just had chicken cassoulet some nights before & had to take a break from chicken, lol). It costed me $4.38 for the bones. Because it was beef bones, I roasted them first to deepen the flavor and give the broth a rich brown color. I simmered them for a total of 46-48 hrs. For other variations, I’d do: - Chicken broth: 20-24 hrs - Fish broth: 8 hrs During the first couple hours, you’ll see some foam begin to collect at the top. These are impurities being cooked off that you’re going to want to dispose of. Just use a large spoon or ladle to skim the foam off. The healthier the cattle/source of your bones, the less of this frothy layer you’ll see. Be sure not to overcook the bones as your broth can turn & you’ll have cooked out the nutrients that you hoped to only extract. There are many great recipes on the internet that give basic broth methods, vegetables likely to be of the root trinity variety (onion + carrot + celery). But when it comes to seasonings & herbs, I just *tek it back a yahhhd* & use what I know has helped my family thrive in health all these years. Thyme, cumin, bay leaf, Himalayan pink salt & fresh ground pepper. Fresh parsley, turmeric & garlic I add in the last hour because you wouldn’t want to overcook the nutrients out of the fresh herbs. Sometimes I add ginger & cayenne (or a scotch bonnet pepper) for extra antioxidant effects, especially considering the cold season we’re moving into. I’m all about a good pre-winter cleanse. The immune system boost certainly does more good than harm & the time spent making this may seem long, but your prep time is literally 10 min. It’s set it & forget it after that. Just the occasional stir & replenishing of filtered water since water evaporates off. Typically, I use about a gallon of water for every 2lbs of bones, along with 2-3 tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar (very crucial step as the acid helps the nutrients in the bones be more readily available and accessible). This amount yields about 128 oz, so that’d be 16 eight-ounce servings. You can use a little less or more, it’s really up to how rich & deep you want the flavor of your broth to be. & your choice added aromatics play a large part in that as well.
Be sure to allow your broth to cool after removing it from the heat. DO NOT IMMEDIATELY TRANSFER HOT BROTH TO THE REFRIGERATOR. That’ll be a camping ground for much bad bacteria & toxicity brewing. Allow it to cool to near room temp’ & then let it sit in the fridge a while so the fat that floats to the top can solidify a bit. Remove the fat & depending on your source, you can dispose of or store this fat in the freezer for future cooking. I say this because fat stores toxins like ya wouldn’t believe. So try to be sure you’re using healthy, grass-fed sourced bones… that way you’ll feel good about using all the by-products of your cooking process, just like our ancestors used to do. ;)
Last thing ! For an extra little boost, there’s unflavored gelatin. Man oh man, I don’t add this to the pot because I never just cook for myself.. but for every serving, if I’m feeling under all the weathers & like I need even more of a boost in an already boosting tonic, Zint Unflavored Gelatin is an amazing additive. Totally optional. You can even add it to your coffee, tea or any other hot beverage if you don’t mind the taste. This addition takes your joint/collagen & digestive health to the next level. I’ve had friends with IBS swear by this product & probiotics in conjunction, which led me to begin using it & my poor digestive symptoms have subsided as well.
A few basic recipes I’ve referenced but made many adaptations from:

So.. get to your local butcher, snatch up those mineral-enriched bones & get your life ! It’s much easier to do something all the time once you’ve accomplished it for the first time. :)
