so ive been reading the kyle rayner run

Thinking about Bernard's parents and how, from what little we've seen of them, I feel Bernard's mother was probably closer to him.

When he does meet up with them during his restaurant date with Tim, his mother is the one that expresses she wants him to come home and later is seen thinking about reaching out to him via text (not sure if she sent the text but she did write it out). I also love the headcanon that Bernard often used to help her in the kitchen, and he has fond memories of cooking with her (which inevitably led to his desire to be a chef).

This doesn't excuse the negative way she treats him, though, especially when she seems prone to snap at him quickly and also is implied to be homophobic.

But I did want to discuss how Bernard's mother seems to be complicit when it comes to her husbands behavior. A great example of this is when Bernard's father tells Bernard outright that it would have been better if he wasn't born. Bernard's mother looks shocked but doesn't actually say or do anything about it from what we can see (unless off screen she told her husband he was going too far but based on the rest of the comic, I highly doubt that.)

As for Bernard's father, I do not trust that man one bit. Like, just his design alone gives off sus vibes with his glasses often hiding his eyes. His hair also seems framed to hide most of his face and when interacting with Bernard, his wife is the one mainly talking to Bear. His father only speaks up to chide him. Just look at how he's drawn in this panel.

I like to headcanon Bernard has fond memories of his Dad when he was very young. But late into his elementary school years his Dad's attitude towards Bernard drastically changed and he always seemed disappointed in Bernard and would berate him often for the smallest things. It's sad to say, but I don't think this is an uncommon thing for bad parents to do - when their kid is small and cute, they enjoy spending time with them. But it wears off when the child gets older (around their early teens), and the parent then treats their child like a burden.

However, don’t be so inane as to tag the character when said tag is for those who share positive works or just neutral thoughts/conversations about them. Perhaps use a ‘-insert name- hate’ tag instead? Just an example ok thank youu

Oh speaking of proportions, how do people do that?? Like i know everything comes with practice and stuff but its been a year and i still cant adequately grasp it. Especially without references everything I learned seems to just disappear..

If youve done art, what helped you with proportions? Is it a me thing or do i really just need more practice?
