CAS project: Literary critic

Learning outcomes:
Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Demonstrate the skills and recognise benefits of working collaboratively
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Activity description:
For my CAS project, I have decided to create a blog on tumblr with various posts on books that I have chosen to review and critique. The blog will feature a book every week that has been reviewed with the short summary and my opinions. Various resources have been taken from the National Library.
Tumblr media
Book review - part four The Island of Dr. Moreau:
To start off I wanted to say that this was one of the most eeriest books I have read where the description of features of the body and the combination of a man-animal made the story stand out. The book was written by H. G. Wells, a writer well known for his creativity and interesting books. The story is about the island that Dr. Moreau inhabits, where he experiments on the animals of the island, as well as people. He creates a supernatural version of a man-animal, creatures that walk on two legs however aren't man. Edward Prendrick, through the book, needs to kill the man-animals that live on the island. There are present themes of the personalities of man, where in every man there is a beast. Edward Prendrick at first sees these man-animal as only an animal, however later on they are more human than the real humans.
Reflection:
The experience overall was very rewarding, being a literary critic really broadened my language vocabulary as well helped me prepare for my English exams on how to recognise good language and structure. It was really interesting also reviewing different literary genres and how different they were from each other.

Part three - book The Portrait of Dorian Gray:
This novel was one that I really wanted to read after watching the movie. It is a book written by Oscar Wilde, a well-known author of many books who lived in the the 19th century and 20th century. The book was interesting to analyse because there were a lot of themes that characterised each character. The main character is Dorian Gray, a handsome man who has befriended Basil Hallward and Lord Henry Wotton. At the start of the book, Dorian Gray is a kind person however after being introduced to Lord Henry his views are changed. Lord Henry encourages Dorian Gray to look at the people around him as something beautiful. Dorian Gray meets an actress Sibyl, whom he gets along with, however after she acted badly in a play he wasnt in love with her anymore, and she killed herself. Dorian Gray looks at the environment around him as something beautiful and when it isnt like him it is lesser. The portrait turns older because The main themes of this book is the narcissism that Dorian Gray has where in the Greek mythology Narcissus is so in love with his reflection that he fell in love with himself.
Reflection:

Part two - Book The Tower of the Swallow review:
To start of this book review, I wanted to say how much fun I had reading it, and in general the whole series of The Witcher by Andzrej Sapkowski, and the different features of each literary genre. This book was definitely different to Dune due to the authors writing style as well as plot. The main characters are also different characteristically, emotionally and physically as well. Geralt, is a man who physically looks 50, however due to the genetic modification that he underwent when he was a boy have slowed down the aging process from being 100 to 50. He is a witcher, sort of a bounty hunter that hunts monsters and gets his pay. The main character and the amazing world building that the author does makes this book excellent. Geralt has such amazing character development, and we as readers get to view his journey from a seemingly cold and emotionless man to a somewhat warm and willing to protect the people he loves. He definetely is different to Paul in the way that he has already mastered his abilities, so the journey to his powers has been, whilst the features of Dune is that Paul masters his powers through his friends. The plot of the world is special due to it having features that create an amazing backstory to the many characters we are introduced to.
Reflection:

Part One - Book Dune review:
Firstly, I would like to mention before I start the review how I came about reading this book. I stumbled upon it by watching the newly released movie, which I later realised was a remake of the movie Dune from the 20th century. The movie immediately attracted me from the start by its sinister and very dark appearance, the places they filmed were very interesting and I was intrigued. I am an avid fan of science fiction and fantasy so of course I had to try this out. The main plot of Dune centers around a boy, Paul, who is born to a Bene Gesserit, priest like women who have visions. This boy goes through various training and practice to master his abilities, which follows the plot coherently. Sometimes, Frank Herbert, I feel like goes away from the buildup making it very hard to focus on certain characters because of just how many weird words there are. He of course fills this in by creating a lovely, rich world that correlates to ours. The world can be considered to be like ours, except filled with supernatural features. It presents society as different places that are tied together. When I was first reading the novel, it took some time for the intrigue to buildup, because of just how much world building he had to do, the action started 100 pages in. However, later on it flowed really nicely, the action wasnt too fast past, but not slow at all. He perfectly filled in the characterisation of the characters in the story, and not losing focus on the main plotline. Overall, I think this is one of the leading novels that have created fantasy as a genre what it is today and that's what makes it memorable.
Reflection:
The experience overall was very rewarding, being a literary critic really broadened my language vocabulary as well helped me prepare for my English exams on how to recognise good language and structure. It was really interesting also reviewing different literary genres and how different they were from each other.

The fair was held in school for approxiamtely 2 hours, where various different countries created their own tables and presented their food. I got to try many different foods and got to ask a lot of insightful questions. CAS Running activity

Duration: everyday, long-term for an hour each day
Tumblr media
Learning outcomes:
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Activity detail:
As a main choice for my activity for CAS I chose running. I thought about first taking up various other sports in order to do these activities, however running and atheltics attracted my attention because they seemed exciting and fun to do. They are a sport where you don't need equipment to do it and it can be done fairly affordably and sustainably. I ran a route from an area of the city, to a wildlife park where I got to see horses and other animals on my run through the park.
Tumblr media
Reflection:
Throughout this experience, I showed dedication and commitment in order to complete the task. This sport not only made me reflect on the environment whilst I ran my course, but also on myself. Before taking up running, I never thought how beneficial it would be for the health of a person, but also so inspirational because it made be think about the nature whilst I ran. I observed other people running through the park and thought how it was so healthy, breathing in clean air and despite being close to the city it felt as though we were at the countryside.

Activity detail:
For our CAS trip of the year, the school planned a trip to Prague, the capital of Bohemia and the center of Czech culture. We visited the city in the first week of May and stayed there for a week. During our visit, we got to experience many different aspects of the country, indulging in the culture, architecture and humanitarian work. We got to learn about the history of Prague and it's culture during the Second World War, as well as visiting one of the most famous monuments and landscapes in the city. The tour guides showed us Charles' Bridge, an ancient medieval bridge over the river Vltava. We got to experience the Prague cathedral and castle.
Tumblr media
Reflection:
First of all I would have to thank all the staff who made this trip a possibility because it really enlightened our experiences on the culture and differences between Prague. During our stay here we got to experience a lot of humanitarian work where we catered to the refugees from Ukraine, and in a kitchen cooked for the people staying at the refugee center. When doing this we got to really think about how much this meant to the refugees that we were making their food. Many of them thanked us and stated that the food was really delicious. The other things we did included studying about the architecture of Prague. The city used to have so many Jewish people but during the war they fled. We got to see Franz Kafka's house and his works.

CAS Gardening Club 🍁
Activity title 🍁: CAS Gardening Club
Type of activity 🍁: creativity, activity and service
Duration 🍁: 2 times per week/long-term, school-based
Tumblr media
Learning outcomes 🍁:
Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Demonstrate skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process
Activity detail 🍁:
Since the start of the first year of IB, our school offered us various activities and clubs that we could join such as the Chess Club or Knitting club. Due to my interest in plants and animals, I managed to sign up for the Gardening club, and alongside other volunteers I would two times per week visit the school greenhouse, flower pots and plants in the classrooms and hallways and water them. The gardening club was not just about watering plants, our biology teacher, organised lessons about plants and how to take care of them, as well as teaching us the how to archive them in the schools archive. During the time of the gardening club, we repotted several house plants, and even organised a yard sale where we sold potted plants in cups and mugs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Reflection 🍁:
Going into this first hand, it was a lot harder than we first thought. When we learnt about plants, we got introduced to the aspects of every plant being unique in its own way. We had to calculate exactly how much water was being used for each plant, so that we didn't overwater them or underwater them. I wanted to demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, and that I could successfully overcome them with the new knowledge that I have learnt. It was very eyeopening and inspirational about the ways we could take care of plants, and how much they were important for our Earth. We took care of the flower pots that were in the school using reusable compost making this task very efficient for the nature. Each person had their own task in the club, where I had the hanging pots around the class. They were in need of re-planting into new pots, that made it possible for them to grow.

Biology terrarium project
Activity title: Biology terrarium project
Type of activity: Creativity, activity and service
Duration: once, school-based, for 2 hours
Tumblr media
Learning outcomes:
Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience
Show commitment and perseverance in CAS experiences
Demonstrate the skills and recognise benefits of working collaboratively
Activity detail:
In October 2021, during a biology class our biology teacher suggested volunteers to create a terrarium exhibition in the hallway near the biology class. Alongside a couple of friends, we sustainably created a terrarium where we housed snails and shrimps. We had the option of creating a terrarium completely made from only soil, or adding water to it, what we did and placing the organisms inside. In class we were learning about the adaption of organisms and how they survive, with this project we could repeat the knowledge we learned in class and use it in order to decorate the hallways of the school.
Tumblr media
Reflection:
The terrarium project was a really good way in which we got to learn about the various different organisms that could live in these little jar's. It took time for us to plan the CAS experience however it was very rewarding as we could see the ecosystem slowly thrive and all our hard work paid off. This project definitely challenged our dedication and perservance into making this happen, because despite it looking lovely now, it was very hard to start. We had to accordingly plan the soil and how we would layer the sand, mud and then soil so that the organisms would feel at home. All of the products used in the making were sustainable used and recycled from flower beds around the school. Looking back at this project it makes me very happy that we managed to do such an ecologically benefiting thing to help out these organisms and the Earth.

Activity title: Trip to Copenhagen Zoo
Type of activity: Creativity and activity
Duration: direct, school-based and 4 hours
Learning outcomes:
Demonstrate the skills and recognise the benefits of working collaboratively
Recognise and consider the ethics of choices and actions
Demonstrate engagement with issue of global significance
Activity description:
On the 25th of August 2021, our CAS class visited the Copenhagen Zoo alongside our homeroom teacher. With more than 4,000 visitors per day, the zoo is one of the oldest zoo's in the world, built in 1859. During our trip, we got to be introduced to the new panda exhibit which was upgraded since their arrival from China. Whilst walking through the zoo, we received tasks to complete by visiting various habitats. We were instructed to discuss the positives and negatives of keeping animals in zoo's. When we were split into groups, we had to take various pictures with the animals, and later on the group with the best picture was awarded a prize.
Tumblr media
Reflection:
We got to work on our creativity and experienced the physical aspect of the experience. Alongside the activities we presented our capability of passing hardships and effort into listening from our guide about the various different animals and their issues. It was enlightening from an aspect of knowledge, as we got to learn how much human works impact the habitats of these animals. It was beneficial learning about the various habitats and how much they differ from the Zoo. The effort that the zookeepers put into making this zoo the most comfortable for the animals is really plausible.
