Summary: Patton and Logan have a small chat about healing between Wind Symphony and Wind Symphony: The Sequel.

This is a dealing with events set after my story Sometimes Labels Fail.

Notes: Superhero AU (not that it matters), past emotional abuse, references to a nontypical trigger, though said trigger has been dealt with in therapy and is mostly under control though not gone

“You don’t have to go,” Logan said when Patton was halfway through pulling off his shirt. Patton finished pulling off the shirt to squint at him. He wasn’t wearing his glasses, so Logan’s form was blurry, but he was sitting on their bed looking at him.

“I know I don’t have to go,” said Patton. He turned to grab the sleeping shirt he’d set out and pulled it over his head.

“Virgil wouldn’t care,” Logan said. “I would be the more likely candidate to take him shopping for such a thing considering the research I’ve done into the topic anyway. I doubt he has any expectations that you will come.”

Patton frowned as he slipped his glasses back onto his face, turning Logan from a blurry mess of blue into a man wearing a blue t-shirt. “Maybe he wouldn’t,” Patton said, “but you don’t know that.”

“Patton,” Logan said, his brow creased in the way that it did only when he was attempting to do a very difficult math equation or was trying to process emotions on the fly. “You once almost had a panic attack because a musician attempted to hand you a violin.”

“That was years ago,” Patton bristled, “and I’d been having a bad day. The violin was not the problem.”

“Perhaps not,” Logan agreed, “but it was a problem.”

“A music shop is not a house of horrors for me,” Patton said. It was the truth even if it felt just a bit like a lie. What he remembered from the music shop of his childhood, the one he’d have to go to for new music books every time he completed his old ones, was an old man who would freeze Patton in place with his gaze (even when he wasn’t actually doing so with his powers), ancient instruments on the walls that Patton’s young mind had imagined being used in blood rituals, and an overwhelming sense of foreboding. He thought normal music shops probably were not like that.

Logan was still frowning, so Patton crossed to the bed and reached for his face. He kissed him on the nose.

“I want to be there,” he told Logan. “Playing the clarinet is something that Virgil loves, and I want to support him in every way I can. I will not be like my mother and that both means not making him play an instrument if he doesn’t want to and encouraging him to do so if he does want to.”

It was easier said than done. If Patton had ever gotten joy from playing a violin, he did not remember it. Thoughts of playing a musical instrument filled him with an uncomfortable squirming sensation even after all of these years. It was a knee-jerk reaction to not want Virgil to experience the same thing, but he was not his knee-jerk reactions. He’d been very careful to keep his instinctual thoughts to himself (and occasionally to Logan when it felt unhealthy to keep them bottled up).

Virgil liked playing music. It made him happy. Sometimes Patton had to remind himself of that in order to react appropriately, but that was okay. It was a little more effort in an area most people wouldn’t even have to think about, but it was worth it.

“He does want to,” Patton continued, “so even if that desire isn’t something I will ever be able to relate to, I still need to show up.”

The face between Patton’s hands still seemed unsure. “This is just a small thing,” Logan said. “We already know you’ll be going to all of his performances. You can show up for him without going on this specific outing.”

“Life is made up of small things,” Patton said, shaking his head, “and it’s also short. I am a 56-year-old man. I refuse to live my life in fear of a string instrument. Anymore.”

“Still,” Logan said, reaching up to cup Patton’s hand still on his cheek.

Patton just rolled his eyes fondly. “I appreciate the concern,” he said, “but I’m going.”

Logan opened his mouth to speak.

“No more talking,” Patton said, using his hands to gently push Logan back onto the bed. He leaned most of his weight on him, though his toes still touched the floor. “Just cuddles.”

Logan hesitated, but then gave in. “Very well,” he agreed and then paused a moment. “Could we perhaps cuddle in a more reasonable position?”

“No,” said Patton, tucking his head into Logan’s chest with a smile. Logan sighed under him and reached up to pat his hair.

Patton knew he’d be able to face any music store as long as Logan was with him.

“Face the music,” Patton whispered with a giggle. Logan groaned.

Best Laid Plans (Part 7/8: Power Outage) [Sometimes Labels Shift Series]

Summary:

Virgil (now) Sanders was once a villain vigilante kid down on his luck. After being injured helping the superhero Bluebird, he ended up being adopted by him and his husband. Logan and Patton Sanders helped Virgil in ways he didn’t even know he needed. Since then, he’s put away his persona of Shadow Caster, the strange, hard to label, super who haunted the city for a few years. Instead he’s opted for being a normal teenager and university student.

But while Logan and Patton often forgot in the midst of ice cream and movie nights and arguments about silly little things who he had been, he never had. And when worst comes to worst, Virgil will be willing to reach for a mask once again despite his fathers’ wishes and expectations.

1) You gain a specific sense when you meet your soulmate. Often this is that you can’t see a certain color or colors at all, but it could also be something else like a scent or a pitch of sound.

2) Body-swap- at a certain age or at random, you swap bodies with your soulmate for 24 hours. Good luck. Hope you both speak the same language.

(I’ve also seen one where it’s not a full swap, but you and your soulmates have episodes where you accidently end up in each other’s head and are viewing the world through there eyes while they’re still in control.)

3) You can feel not just a soulmate’s pain, but all of their strong emotions.

4) You have the first thing they will ever think about about you tattooed on you. (Not necessarily things they say and might come after their first words to you. It’s the first real opinion they have of you.)

5) One of your eyes is your eye color and the other is your soulmate’s until you meet.

6) You have to care for an animal that represents your soulmate’s personality.

7) You have the nickname that your soulmate will end up calling you. Most are things like ‘Sweetie,’ ‘Honey,’ or ‘Love.’ Why is yours ‘Sweet cactus’???

8) There are a lot of tik-tok ones I’ve seen recently that are like you and your soulmate can send each other money before you meet and they can decide certain things about your day like what you wear and eat before they meet you which are a bit narratively week.

9) You have a tattoo that represents you that seems complete, but when you meet your soulmate, you get a copy of their tattoo and it becomes clear what the picture actually is. (Or the opposite, you have a tattoo representing them.)

10) On a random day you end up with your soulmate’s prized possession and your prized possession missing.

I am compiling them for reasons which may or may not involve at least two fic ideas and a comic about soulmate universes

Also if you know of/can think of names for any of the ones I've just got a description for, I would love to hear them please!

My list so far: (under a readmore so I can edit it and also cause it's gonna be LONG)

Red string of fate: you have a red string/thread tied to you, and the other end is tied to your soulmate. Sometimes only you can see it, sometimes other people can too, depending on the world. (and sometimes people can't see their own)

First Words: the first thing your soulmate says to you is written on your skin. Sometimes it changes color when they're said

First Touch: you have a mark on your skin in the first place your soulmate touches you. Often the mark is black and becomes colorful on touch

First Touch v2: You have an outline of a shape, and your soulmate has the same shape, and when you touch for the first time both your shapes fill in, in the same color. The placement of the shape is not determined by where you touched. (I've only seen this one in @snowdice's awesome Twist Of Fate, in which the placement indicates the kind of relationship you have with your soulmate: sibling, paternal, etc)

Countdown: you have a countdown, and when it reaches 0, you meet your soulmate.

Anything you write on your skin appears on theirs. Some versions make a distinction between anything you specifically write vs any marks.

You can hear your soulmate sing

You can hear any music your soulmate is actively listening to

Compass: you have an arrow tattoo that points at your soulmate, but doesn't say how far.

You have a constantly updating tattoo saying how far away your soulmate is, but doesn't say direction. (though I suppose you could figure out the direction pretty quickly, unless the unit is pretty big, like. your soulmate is 5 miles away and that's as specific as it gets)

Name: your soulmate's name is written on you somewhere

You have a mark that changes color when you first meet your soulmate (no touching required)

First Touch, Glue edition: When you first touch your soulmate skin to skin, you are stuck together at that spot for the next 24 hours

You can feel your soulmate's pain

You can visit your soulmate in dreams, and vice versa. (I read a really good sanders sides fic with this one, and the dream location was always in water, but I don't remember enough else to find it again)

Temporary Color Touches: whenever your soulmate touches you, it leaves a colorful mark, which fades after some time. The color of the mark may or may not be specific to each person, and it may require specifically skin contact.

Scars and Flowers: wherever you have a scar, your soulmate has a floral tattoo (I've only seen this one in The Appendectomy by @not-so-innocent-bi-sander)

We shall soon be moving into Folds in Paper: Book 2 now that I have finished the intermission story. So, we are finally heading back to Janus! Youtube Update!

I wanted to post this last Wednesday when the video actually came out but due to life things I wasn't able to. So it's a week late. Anyway!

For those of you who don't know, I have a YouTube channel where I read Podfic, it is completely Sanders Sides stories at this time but I'm hoping to expand in the future, and recently I hit 500 subscribers, which I was not expecting to happen. So, with permission, I did a 2 hour story, much longer than my normal content, and uploaded it as a thank you to everyone who has been listening to my stories. If you would like you can check it out here.

The story was written by @snowdice Ao3 link here, literally one of my favorite writers on Ao3. Like, this series is absolutely amazing, the world building is phenomenal and thought out, the characters are well developed and their actions are rooted in behaviors that are set up in backstories, it is seriously phenomenal! The amazing art work for the story was done by @birdsongisland who did a fantastic job, the last piece is just gorgeous and I am constantly impressed by the number of amazing artists we have in this community.

Seriously, check these two creators out please and shower them with the accolades and praise they deserve!
