'Horrible Bosses' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 15 Director Seth Gordon Starring Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis Running Time 98 mins
SYNOPSIS: Three long-suffering friends hatch a plan to kill off the nasty bosses who are making their lives hell. Hard working Nick (Jason Bateman) has to deal with the sadistic Harken (Kevin Spacey), his manager. Dental assistant Dale (Charlie Day) has a horrible boss: sexual predator Julia (Jennifer Aniston). Accountant Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) has to deal with the extremely prejudice Bobby (Colin Farrel). Their attempts to carry out their murderous plan do not go quite as they envisaged.
MY THOUGHTS: Director, Seth Gordon creates an adequate comedy. The film promises much, but unfortunately the trailer contains almost all of the best bits. Funny one-liners and genuine laugh out loud moments are too sparse. Dale played by Charlie Day is actually really annoying throughout and only funny on occasion. Jason Bateman is likeable as Nick, you feel his frustration, especially when he is in Harken's office at 8:15am one morning and made to drink, what looks like a pint of eighteen year old scotch! All in the name of promotion or not in this case, played perfectly by Kevin Spacey as his smug boss. The performances that excel are from the bosses, it must be every actors dream to play a role like this. They are given free reign. If only the film centred around the bosses more, as opposed to the three friends then perhaps the film would be a winner! Jennifer Aniston's character is pure filth and one of the funniest performance's of her career. But for me Colin Farrel steals it with what little screen time he has and with his combover and pot-belly make-under. Bobby's character is very reminiscent of Tom Cruise's vulgarity as Les Grossman in 'Tropic Thunder' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ygBNcRQ3hLw&feature=fvst)
'Horrible Bosses' has a huge amount of potential but ultimately fails to deliver. Perhaps an opportunity has arisen to create a spin-off movie similar to the planned Les Grossman film currently in the pipeline (http://www.totalfilm.com/news/les-grossman-movie-officially%20happening) for Colin Farrel's character. The only likeable of the three friends is Jason Bateman's. Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis are annoying and they try too hard. Kevin Spacey, Jennifer Aniston and Colin Farrell can only rectify some of the damage already inflicted but certainly do no harm to their reputations. Genuine laugh out loud moments and one-liners are far too rare. Wait for the DVD.
NEXT FILMS: Jason Bateman will appear next in 'The Change-Up' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4k-4vO1QhCk) with Ryan Reynolds. Charlie Day can be seen next in 'Pacific Rim'. When an alien attack threatens the Earth's existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace. Normally this would worry me but, Idris Elba is in it and it is going to be directed by Guillermo del Toro which gives me hope. Jason Sudeikis will be seen next in 'Movie 43' an intriguing concept comprising of short comedy segments with a huge array of big names starring.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Jason Bateman in the comedy 'Hancock' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnBb—AYGn8) with Will Smith. Check out Charlie Day in 'Going the Distance' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HGDx2cAdMo&ob=av3e). Check Jason Sudeikis out in 'Hall Pass' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NF9CPtD_UsI&playnext=1&list=PLF0A0F3E1DDF75DC3)

'Captain America - The First Avenger' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Joe Johnston Starring Chris Evans, Hugo Weaving, Hayley Atwell, Running Time 124 mins
SYNOPSIS: Set during World War II, the diminutive Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) volunteers for a top secret military research project after being deemed physically unfit to enlist in the US Army. The experiment is the brain child of Dr. Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci), impressed by the kids resilience and attitude, along with the help of Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Robert Downey Jr's father in Iron Man). Rogers is turned into super-soldier Captain America. Initially, Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones) is dismissive of the fact that Captain America can make a significant difference in the war. Captain America's nemesis is not Adolf Hitler but Johann Schmidt aka Red Skull or a very ripe tomato head (Hugo Weaving), the head of the Nazi's secret HYDRA research department.
MY THOUGHTS: Director, Joe Johnston has certainly redeemed himself after the débâcle that was 'The Wolfman'. The CGI is surprisingly good, particularly at the beginning of the film as only the head belongs to Chris Evans, with a digitally emaciated body before his transformation into the beefcake that is Captain America. The battle scenes are visceral, making good use of slow motion footage by Joe Johnston that aids the tense battles. Immediately after the transformation into Captain America, he has to chase a spy, this is my slight gripe. The running doesn't look as natural as perhaps it should. In saying this he re-creates the 1940s brilliantly.
Joe Johnston does well in as much as that he allows the audience to get to know the resilient and likeable Steve Rogers who is bullied regularly, showing unique courage in the face of danger. It is reminiscent of 'Batman Begins', as it is an origin story and the audience are teased, building the anticipation before the unveiling of the iconic hero later in the movie.
One of the main reason's why Chris Evans' career hasn't plummeted after the shockingly poor 'Fantastic Four' films is because of his charisma. He conveys this attribute extremely well on screen and delivers a strong performance. As does Tommy Lee Jones as the pessimistic and hard nosed Colonel.
It is what it is, a blockbuster, but a hugely enjoyable one. Entertaining and action-packed throughout with strong performances particularly from Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Stanley Tucci and Dominic Cooper.. You'll be backing the underdog to succeed, especially as he is up against the Nazi's! The film slots into 'The Avengers' storyline nicely.
NEXT FILMS: Chris Evans will be seen next in 'What's Your Number?', a comedy with Anna Faris . A woman looks back at the past twenty men she's had relationships with in her life and wonders if one of them might be her one true love. Chris Evans is also filming 'The Avengers' as Captain America. The film includes Iron Man, Thor and Bruce Banner to name a few and will be released in 2012. Hugo Weaving will be seen next in 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' directed by Peter Jackson and due out in 2012. Bilbo Baggins, journeys to the Lonely Mountain accompanied by a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon Smaug. Hayley Atwell will be seen next in 'I, Anna' A noir thriller told from the point of view of a femme fatale, who falls for the detective in charge of a murder case.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Chris Evans in 'Sunshine' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0ciLKeMGeU) and his performance in 'Street Kings' alongside Keanu Reeves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vn3gH4ejb7o). Check out Hugo Weaving in 'The Matrix' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Ls19O-9p3s). Hayley Atwell can be seen in 'The Duchess' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqZpDTI8kSk).

WATCH OUT FOR: 'MONEYBALL'
RELEASE DATE: 04/11/2011
STARRING: Brad Pitt, Robin Wright, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman
DIRECTOR: Bennett Miller
SYNOPSIS: 'Moneyball' is the story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players
THE REASON: From viewing the trailer it seems the movie intends to blend an element of comedy with a compelling true story that could work well. Aaron Sorkin, the man who wrote the screenplay to 'The Social Network' has helped with Steve Zaillian's adaption of Michael Lewis' novel, which can only be positive.
I don't think Brad Pitt gets the credit he deserves as an actor, he is likeable in almost every role he has played, that is unique and this film along with 'World War Z' should make people sit up and take notice of his acting ability and not just his abs, perhaps acclaimed recognition will follow. As he is getting older, he is selecting very interesting roles, if only I could say the same for Johnny (I'm a pirate) Depp. Jonah Hill is an expert at delivering one-liners.
The storyline is engaging, a backs against the wall film that could potentially be one of the top films of 2011.

'ALI' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 15 Director Michael Mann Starring Will Smith, Jon Voight, Jamie Foxx Running Time 157 mins
SYNOPSIS: The film begins with the 1964 Heavyweight title fight between Champion Sonny Liston and the then challenger, Cassius Clay (Will Smith). The film centre's around the turbulent 10 years, culminating in the "Rumble in the Jungle" in Jamaica, 1974. Michael Mann explores Muhammad Ali's involvement with the Nation of Islam, his refusal to be drafted during the Vietnam War, his rise to fame and it examines the years in which he was wrongly banned from Boxing due to his political and religious commitments along with his breathtaking triumphant return to the ring.
MY THOUGHTS: An intricate portrayal of the greatest boxer of all time, perhaps the greatest sportsman of all time. Acclaimed director Michael Mann leaves no stone unturned in his quest to tell a hugely compelling, true story during a volatile era in American history. His attention to detail is common knowledge, the film style and cinematography are quite frankly near to perfection. Mann allows the audience to feel involved as a result of the way he has captured the fights, you feel as if you are inside the ring, he brings to life the iconic images we have seen in documentaries about Ali. The film has ignored Ali's early life and the inevitable downward spiral later on in his life. Instead of this being a negative, it in fact allows Michael Mann, as a storyteller to fully engage the audience with the captivating subject matter of the most important period in his life. At times it is difficult to know the time period as Mann decides against informing the audience of the date during the film except at the start.
Will Smith delivers his career defining performance thus far, becoming Muhammad Ali including his unique mannerisms and undeniable charisma. He gained thirty-five pounds for the role and was prepared along with Michael Mann to give up their salaries if they went over-budget. Unfortunately Will Smith didn't pick up, what would have been a deserved Oscar win as Denzel Washington won it for his superb performance in 'Training Day' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yX0_sxnG1j4).
Jamie Foxx shows signs of his acting talent with a strong portrayal as Bundini. Jon Voight is almost unrecognisable as Howard Cosell but is again outstanding as the journalist. Jeffrey Wright, Mario Van Peebles, Ron Silver and Jada Pinkett Smith give strong performances throughout.
If you haven't already watched this film, then do so as soon as you can. This truly is a masterpiece, an epic about one of the greatest sportsmen in history during one of the most turbulent times in Twentieth Century America. It is a slight shame that the rivalry between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali isn't looked at in more detail, instead Mann choses to focus on the first fight in their incredible trilogy. A fascinating insight, superb performances and beautiful film-making.
NEXT FILMS: Will Smith will be seen next in 'Men in Black III' with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin. Jamie Foxx will appear in the comedy 'Horrible Bosses' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mh9cG5dzs-U). Jon Voight will be seen next in 'Beyond'.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Will Smith's brilliant performance in 'The Pursuit of Happyness' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xcZTtlGweQ). You must see Jamie Foxx's portrayal as Ray Charles that won him an Oscar in 'Ray' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8lAgwrxndk). Check out Jon Voight's performance in 'The Manchurian Candidate' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR8WYO9Lj9g)

'The Tree of Life' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Terrence Malick Starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, Jessica Chastain Running Time 139 mins
SYNOPSIS: Jack (Hunter McCracken) is one of three brothers brought up in Texas during the 1950s by their no-nonsense, strict father (Brad Pitt) and their laid back, caring mother (Jessica Chastain). Sean Penn plays a jaded Jack as an adult, reflecting on a tough childhood dominated by his overbearing father in an attempt to rediscover meaning in his life after a failed marriage. The film endeavours to examine the meaning of life itself.
MY THOUGHTS: Director, Terrence Malick is a unique character and an unorthodox film maker, Kubrick esque in as much as he rarely makes a film. Five movies in thirty-eight years to be exact. His films are incredibly thought provoking, perhaps most notably in 'The Thin Red Line' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHxJp2wgb-g) and the same applies here. The cinematography and film style used, along with the storyline are exceptional and the detail, exquisite, almost poetic at times. The turmoil of disjointed scenes at the beginning of the film are as if Terrence Malick designed it specifically as a test for the audience, if you are patient enough you will witness the complicated, constantly evolving relationships within the family and the captivating performances that follow. The use of voice overs is fascinating as the audience are allowed to hear the most private thoughts of the characters.
Brad Pitt plays the father with intensity and has clearly developed into an outstanding actor of late, not worried about the variety of characters he plays. Jessica Chastain is beginning to emerge as one of the most sought after actresses in Hollywood at the moment, playing the nurturing, yet vulnerable mother brilliantly. Hunter McCracken is perhaps the find in his debut picture, conveying his inner most thoughts without words at times, seemingly effortlessly. Sean Penn is captivating as usual.
This is a unique insight into family life, childhood and the complexities of developing relationships, going as far back as when the Dinosaurs roamed the planet to the inevitable day when existence comes to a sudden and violent end. It is transcendent. It is baffling. It is long. It is some sort of a masterpiece. Moreover, it is difficult to follow at times. If you're going to watch it, watch it in the cinema. It won the coveted Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival for a reason.
NEXT FILMS: Brad Pitt will be seen next in 'Moneyball' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiAHlZVgXjk), a film that could be a serious success and potentially one of the best sports films. Sean Penn will appear in 'This Must Be the Place' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmaRz6Ie_C4). The much in demand Jessica Chastain will be seen next in 'The Debt' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFp28r9sqUw).
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Brad Pitt's performance in 'Se7en' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4YV2_TcCoE). Check out a peerless Sean Penn in 'Milk' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLC5SzczC44).

'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Michael Bay Starring Shia LaBeouf, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Josh Duhamel Running Time 157 mins
SYNOPSIS: Mankind's continuing war against the Decepticons takes an interesting turn as NASA discover an alien spacecraft wreck on the dark side of the moon, this is what ignited the space race between America and the Soviet Union in the 1960s. The film switches into the present, reintroducing unlikely hero Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) facing the usual everyday dilemma's. Mikaela Banes played by Megan Fox is long gone. (It was widely reported that Executive Producer, Steven Spielberg fired her after likening director Michael Bay to Hitler.) Fox is replaced by Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), Sam's new woman. He can't get a job and is determined to save the world again from the inevitable attack.
MY THOUGHTS: I enjoyed the first film in the trilogy, back in 2007. it was a surprise hit when you consider the director, Michael Bay has been labelled as a terrible film maker. It made Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox overnight stars. Stark contrast to the appalling sequel that Shia LaBeouf has been quoted as saying "I hated it, I just didn't enjoy it. I thought we missed the mark. I got confused. I couldn't see what the fuck was going on, you know with certain robots...I couldn't decipher what was happening. There were storyline paths that I just wouldn't have gone down." Furthermore, LaBeouf recently stated that 'Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen' suffered as a result of barely having a script. Shocking stuff for a Hollywood blockbuster.
I wasn't holding my breath for the third film in the franchise, but was pleasantly surprised to a certain extent. I'll begin with the negatives. A few films I've watched recently, namely 'Green Lantern' and now this film contain ground breaking CGI, that are impressive in certain aspects of the movie but again attempt to use the technology in certain scenes that just doesn't work. An example would be the use of CGI  to re-create President JFK, it clearly looks nothing like him. The length of the third instalment is hefty to say the least. At 157 minutes, it will take patience and a large bladder if you are to watch it uninterrupted.
The sequences are impressive and more structured than the dire 2009 sequel. Steven Spielberg was signed up as Executive Producer and was undoubtedly utilised to full effect by Michael Bay for his vast array of knowledge.
Shia LaBeouf is without doubt one of the best young actors in Hollywood. He has come along way from his 'Even Stevens' days, and has carved out and developed into a leading man of stature. He has the unique ability to convey visceral emotion to the audience that enables them to like the character in which he is portraying and care what happens to his character. Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is clearly pretty hot, having had a very successful modelling career, she is now pursuing an acting career, it was a bold move to cast her, as this is her first film. Whiteley comes across as likeable, but a bit wooden, not really surprising considering the enormity of the movie and Michael Bay uses some pervy/interesting camera angles that is perhaps an attempt to gloss over this wooden trait on screen. Patrick Dempsey does well as playing the bad guy but you will have an urge to want to flick him in the face!
The positives do outweigh the negatives and with some eye catching visuals, good performances mainly from Shia LaBeouf with an interesting plot, along with funny moments does make for an entertaining film.
NEXT FILMS: Shia LaBeouf will be seen next in 'The Wettest County in the World' with the formidable duo of Tom Hardy and Gary Oldman. It is a crime-drama centred on a family of depression-era bootleggers in the American south, from the director of 'The Road' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbLgszfXTAY). Rosie Huntington-Whiteley doesn't have anything in the pipeline at the moment. Josh Duhamel will be seen next in 'New Year's Eve' with Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel and Ashton Kutcher. The lives of several couples and singles in New York intertwine over the course of New Year's Eve.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Shia LaBeouf in 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZDXDvlpu6I) in which he truly shredded his 'Even Stevens' childhood acting role. Check out his performance in 'Disturbia' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Sx4_MLZpoE) and 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1YjwFty7-I). This is Rosie Huntington-Whiteley's first film. Check out Josh Duhamel in 'Paradise Lost' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqVsNlarzIo)

WATCH OUT FOR: 'CONTAGION'
RELEASE DATE: 21/10/2011
STARRING: Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Marion Cotillard
DIRECTOR: Steven Soderbergh
SYNOPSIS: Three passengers on an american bound airplane are struck down with a mysterious ailment, the virus rapidly spreads throughout the US, panic spreads as a conspiracy-theorist blogger publishes as much disinformation about the disease as he does fact and causes mayhem worldwide.
THE REASON: Apart from Jude Law and Laurence Fishburne, the actors are at the top of their game. Kate Winslet is completely peerless and Matt Damon can do no wrong in my eyes. Although Laurence Fishburne's only good film was 'The Matrix'. With the addition of Marion Cotillard and Gwyneth Paltrow it does make for a strong cast and a director who is not afraid to take risks ('The Girlfriend Experience', 'Che: Part One', 'Che: Part Two'.)
Judging from the trailer and various articles online, the movie deals with government bureaucracy, pharmaceutical corporations, the spreading of information and the repercussions; thus signifying a very visceral film at the hands of an award winning director. A potentially exciting and tense thriller about subject matter that is genuinely scary, especially with the Media attempting to frighten the population with previous potential pandemic viruses: SARS, H5N1.

'Green Lantern' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Martin Campbell Starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard Running Time 105 mins
SYNOPSIS: Hal Jordan/Green Lantern (Ryan Reynolds) is a hotshot test pilot with a confidence built on soft foundations as we witness during a flashback involving his father. This confidence is aimed at Carol Ferris (Blake Lively) with obvious flirting. Anyway, Hal encounters a dying Green Lantern (a sworn keeper of intergalactic peace), Abin Sur who crashed on Earth after an attack from the evil Parallax feeding on fear and consequently Sur's powerful green ring chooses Hal as the next Lantern. Reluctantly accepting this great responsibility, Hal proceeds to undergo vigorous training overseen by Sinestro (Mark Strong) in an attempt to utilise the power of the ring. The emergence of Hector Hammond (Peter Sarsgaard), the professor who accidentally comes into contact with the yellow fear of Parallax means that Hal must harness the power rapidly to protect Earth.
MY THOUGHTS: It's about time DC Comics spread their superhero wings from the long time associated Superman and Batman franchises to the little known Green Lantern, having long lived in their shadows. The film strangely describes Hal Jordan as the first human to be recruited by the Green Lantern Corps. But the comics created Alan Scott as the first human Green Lantern in 1940, Hal wasn't created until 1959. A bizarre omission from the screenwriters.
Director, Martin Campbell who took charge of the successful reboot of James Bond in 'Casino Royale' seems to have struggled with the CGI element, which was an obvious requirement for this movie. The studio decided to spend a further $9 million during post-production to patch up the dodgy CGI effects. Bizarrely the CGI is good in parts but also glaringly unimpressive in others. The film had a budget of $200 million, where did the money go?!
The film is full of cliche's with barely any originality. It reminded me of 'Pearl Harbour', Hollywood seems to think by throwing vast sums of money at blockbusters it will lead to a large profit. The story needs to have depth. One sub-plot is incredibly similar to that of 'Top Gun', with Tom Cruise's character, Maverick full of confidence on the outside, but struggling to control his fear he has developed from the death of his father, Hal Jordon undergoes the same process. Lazy screenwriters? Filming was meant to begin in 2009 and for whatever reason it is only now we are witnessing the finished product.
However, the film does possess original elements, partly due to most of the film being set in space. Ryan Reynold's has undoubted charisma and natural charm that allows the viewers to connect to his character, he is a likeable actor and he easily conveys this attribute to the audience. Without Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, the film would have bombed in the box office, but he manages and struggles to hold the gaps together along with the help of Peter Sarsgaard, seemingly underrated in Hollywood. In saying this, the final third of the film is captivating enough to save, what could have been a disaster. It just about scrapes the rating I have given it below. If you don't mind sitting through some moments of dodgy CGI and the simplest of plots but with some good performances and an entertaining final third, then this is a film to watch, just! A sequel worries me...
NEXT FILMS: Ryan Reynolds will appear next in 'The Change-Up' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHnyW5Fvtvw) with Jason Bateman and Olivia Wilde. Blake Lively will be seen next in 'Hick' with Chloe Moretz and Alec Baldwin. A Nebraska teen gets more than she bargained for when she sets out for the bright lights of Las Vegas. Peter Sarsgaard will be seen next in 'Very Good Girls' with Dakota Fanning and Dustin Hoffman. Two New York City girls pact to lose their virginity during their first summer out of high school. When they both fall for the same street artist, the friends find their connection tested for the first time.
RECOMMENDATIONS: You have to watch the hilarious 'Just Friends' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnKSPJdpyWo) with Amy Smart and Anna Faris and his performance in 'Fireflies in the Garden' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAjSeN90g2g) proving he is not just a comedic actor. Check out Blake Lively in 'The Town' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBh8ixXFz84) a captivating and tense film directed and starring Ben Affleck. Watch 'Jarhead' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ur2h8hpd87E) with Peter Sarsgaard and Jake Gyllenhaal.
"The ring, it chose you. Use its power to defend our universe. Become one of us... become a Green Lantern."

'Bad Teacher' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 15 Director Jake Kasdan Starring Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel, Justin Timberlake Running Time 92 mins
SYNOPSIS: Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz) is a reluctant teacher who is not afraid to say what she thinks. After getting dumped by her sugar daddy, the bad girl returns to the school she thought she had left for good to enjoy the high life. It's not so bad though, when a new substitute teacher Scott Delacourte (Justin Timberlake) starts, it helps that he is also the heir to a large watch fortune. A large obstacle is in the way, and that is fellow teacher Amy Squirrel (Lucy Punch), the most annoying eccentric irritant, who happens to be dating Timberlake's character.
MY THOUGHTS: 'Bad Teacher' is a good comedy, but not a great one. The main reason why it's just a good film is the simple, predictable plot. In saying this, the portrayal of Elizabeth Halsey (Cameron Diaz), a teacher is among the best in her career to date, with genuinely funny moments partly due to some magic one liners that will have you laughing out loud. The supporting cast deliver, largely solid performances as they are able to transfer the great lines written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg onto the screen without losing the comedy aspect. Phyllis Smith and Jason Segel offer great support to Cameron Diaz and enhance their reputations in Hollywood without a shadow of a doubt. Lucy Punch is unbelievably irritating in the film as her character is a general ball ache. I was a little perplexed as to why Justin Timberlake would accept this role, perhaps he wanted to work with his ex-girlfriend? His character is literally clueless to what is going on around him and it just doesn't feel right, he isn't suited to this character, he doesn't pull it off. This is not to say he can't act, as he has surpassed my expectations. He was brilliant in 'The Social Network' and 'Alpha Dog'. Cameron Diaz is not just a fox, she can act. Jason Segel continues to raise his comedy stock in Hollywood with another likeable and funny portrayal of a gym teacher. This film is definately worth watching for the outrageous one liners that will have you laughing out loud.
NEXT FILMS: Cameron Diaz will be seen next in 'Gambit' with Colin Firth and Alan Rickman. An art curator enlists the services of a Texas steer roper to con a wealthy collector into buying a fake Monet painting. Jason Segel will be seen next in 'Jeff Who Lives at Home' with Ed Helms and Judy Greer. Jeff leaves his home to run an errand for his Mother, and discovers the Universe might be sending him signals about the nature of his destiny. Justin Timberlake will appear in 'Friends with Benefits' alongside Mila Kunis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJS-wWqVAyk)
RECOMMENDATIONS: I can't review a Cameron Diaz film without recommending her breakout role in 'The Mask' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0xBiclGFH4) with Jim Carrey and the superb 'Any Given Sunday' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RN7sKvaHDlA) with Al Pacino and Jamie Foxx. I would adivse my readers to check out Justin Timberlake in 'Alpha Dog' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOT88EXxs_I) with Emile Hirsch and Anton Yelchin. Check out Jason Segel in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xuMfKxXnDk) with Paul Rudd and Kristen Bell.

'The Hangover Part II' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 15 Director Todd Phillips Starring Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms Running Time 102 mins
SYNOPSIS: It's happened again. Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), Doug (Justin Bartha), and Alan (Zach Galifianakis) haven't learnt from their mistakes in Vegas. This time it's Stu's Wedding in Thailand, to the adorable Lauren (Jamie Chung). After some brown nosing from Doug, Stu reluctantly invites the founding member of the Wolf-pack, Alan to the Wedding. Stu is determined not to have a stag do and agrees to one beer on the beach with the gang including Lauren's brother Teddy (Mason Lee), predictably leading to disaster. Most of the Wolf-pack wake up in a Bangkok hotel, where they must retrace their steps in time for the Wedding.
MY THOUGHTS: Todd Phillips has developed a recipe for these films that works incredibly well. Reintroducing the characters, forwarding to the inevitable phone call from Phil to Doug's wife informing her of the dire situation in which they've found themselves in. Followed by the film credits, then the initial drink at the beginning of the night, to waking up utterly clueless, then slowly piecing the previous night back together with various clues. The film comes full circle back to the phone call from Phil and then onto the climax of the movie. Part of the reason both films have worked well is the exceptional direction from Todd Phillips and the outstanding soundtrack implemented perfectly at precise moments during certain scenes in both films. Zach Galifianakis is fast becoming the best comedic actor in Hollywood, he'll certainly be challenging Will Ferrell to this mantle, and will have this opportunity as they have signed up to work with one another in a few films due out in 2012. The writers deserve a mention as they have supplied the actors with brilliant lines, delivered expertly, particularly from Galifianakis' character, Alan. At the beginning of the film, the audience has the opportunity to enter Alan's bedroom and see the way he interacts with his parents, which will leave you laughing out loud. After the successful opening weekend, it has become clear a third one will be made, and I'd be surprised if Warner Bros didn't attempt a spin-off with Alan when the trilogy has been completed. Ed Helms and Bradley Cooper as well as Zach Galifianakis really do gel well together and make a good team. The second film doesn't have that surprise element that the original has and they have upped the ante with some darker moments in this film. The expectation was high, as for all sequels, not many are deemed a success ('Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen' for example), but this film is, apart from some lulls midway through the film that distance itself from the comedy elements. Watching the barely functioning Alan is pure Gold. Definately worth watching for the comedy experience.
NEXT FILMS: Bradley Cooper is currently filming 'The Words' with Olivia Wilde and Zoe Saldana, about a writer who discovers the price he must pay for stealing another author's work. Zach Galifianakis' next film is 'The Muppets', but it is 'Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie' that I will briefly discuss. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are involved, two guys get a billion dollars to make a movie, only to watch their dream run off course. Ed Helms will be seen next in 'Jeff Who Lives at Home' with Jason Segel and Judy Greer. Jeff leaves his house to run an errand for his Mother, and discovers the Universe might be sending him signals about the nature of his destiny.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Watch 'Limitless' with Abbie Cornish and Robert De Niro, which I reviewed in a previous blog post, giving it 4 out of 5.(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgRvJNgySx8) Watch Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpTiRd1YV7g), this is a little known DVD from a few years ago. Have a look at 'Cedar Rapids' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9VspqcwtJQ) for Helms' natural comic timing.

'Hanna' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Joe Wright Starring Saoirse Ronan, Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana, Tom Hollander Running Time 111 mins
SYNOPSIS: Hanna (Saoirse Ronan) is a sixteen year old, raised in the Finnish wilderness by her ex-CIA agent father Erik (Eric Bana) to be the perfect assassin. She is now deemed ready by Erik to be sent out on a mission throughout Europe. On her trail is Marissa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett), a ruthless intelligence agent with a few dark secrets of her own.
MY THOUGHTS: This is a unique and relentless thriller from Joe Wright. The Cinematography and film style are sublime, the best I've seen since 'True Grit' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GkAH7IUWOE). Saoirse Ronan delivers a truly remarkable performance far beyond her years, similar to that of Hailee Steinfeld in the film mentioned in differing circumstances. Solid performances from both Blanchett and Bana, while Tom Hollander is also worth a mention as the creepy German assassin with terrible fashion sense, Isaacs. The soundtrack from the Chemical Brothers is impressive, particularly in the chase scenes. Definitely worth watching and certainly not generic by any means. Thoroughly enjoyable and fast-paced with strong performances, particularly from the impressive Ronan.
NEXT FILMS: Saoirse Ronan will be seen next in 'Violet & Daisy' about two teenage assassins accepting what they think will be a quick and easy job, until an unexpected target throw them off their plan. Rumours have been on the internet suggesting Ronan will appear alongside Blanchett in 'The Hobbit' but that remains to be seen, although the latter has already been confirmed. Directed by Peter Jackson, it is the first of two prequel films to 'The Lord Of The Rings' trilogy. Eric Bana will appear alongside Olivia Wilde in 'Blackbird' about two desperate sibling fugitives.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Saoirse Ronan in 'Atonement' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkVQwwPrr4c) with James McAvoy and Keira Knightly. Check out Cate Blanchett in 'Charlotte Gray' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLBepvteMpM) and her performance in 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vITxj7Tq4f4). Watch Eric Bana in 'Black Hawk Down' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnV6wM-vd9s) and his performance in Steven Spielberg's 'Munich' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LFfT44BlaQ).

'Water For Elephants' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Francis Lawrence Starring Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz Running Time 120 mins
SYNOPSIS: Based on the novel by Sara Greun. Veterinary student Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson) is left devastated by the sudden death of his parents in a car crash and abandons his studies during his final year and jumps on a train. He soon finds out he is part of a travelling Circus. When August (Christoph Waltz) the head animal trainer finds out Jacob is a Veterinarian, he hires him to look after the animals. Jacob slowly falls for August's young wife, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon).
MY THOUGHTS: This is an interesting story told through the eyes of Jacob, played by Robert Pattinson. Proving he can hold his own with accomplished actors, such as Pierce Brosnan in 'Remember Me' and again alongside Oscar winning Christoph Waltz. If Pattinson is to have a career beyond 'The Twilight Saga' he will need to step away from these romantic roles and show more of his acting ability. RPatz has a good on screen presence and possesses a likeable quality as a result of this, it will therefore be intriguing to see how his acting career unfolds. Waltz is exceptional as a sadistic but at times charming animal trainer who clearly has issues. Witherspoon somehow brings some glamour to Marlena even though she has become trapped and unhappy with August. Director, Francis Lawrence manages to bring the depression era of the 1930's to life brilliantly, having previously directed 'I Am Legend', and thus showing his versatility as a director. This is certainly not an adrenaline filled movie, it is a romantic drama that takes time to lay the foundation. The film contains some difficult moments, particularly when August physically hurts Rosie, the adorable Elephant. This is by no means a captivating watch, but it does contain some good moments with solid performances, particularly from Christoph Waltz. Pattinson again shows glimpses of what he is capable of and holds his own duringtense scenes with Waltz.
NEXT FILMS: Robert Pattinson will reprise his role that he is most famous for as Edward Cullen in 'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part I', but it is the announcement that he will appear in David Cronenberg's new film, 'Cosmopolis' that will follow a multimillionaire on a 24-hour Odyssey across Manhattan that could help establish Pattinson. Witherspoon will appear alongside Tom Hardy and Chris Pine in 'This Means War' directed by McG. Two CIA operatives wage an epic battle against one another when they both fall in love with the same woman. Waltz will be seen next in 'The Three Musketeers' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQd3MwT2fAM), directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who helmed the 'Resident Evil' franchise.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Pattinson in 'Remember Me' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMBfTdm9ALk) where he shows glimpses of what he is capable of and the unrecognisable Pattinson in 'How to Be' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQBPAmnAlOk). Check out Witherspoon in her Oscar winning performance as June Carter in 'Walk The Line' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ydrr5zDJGzA) with Joaquin Phoenix about the life of Johnny Cash. Watch Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5sQhTVz5IjQ) for Christoph Waltz in his Oscar winning role as Colonel Hans Landa

'Insidious' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 15 Director James Wan Starring Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins Running Time 103 mins
SYNOPSIS: Josh (Patrick Wilson) and Renai (Rose Byrne) move with their three children to a new family home. But their happy existance soon spirals into unmitigated terror when their son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) is knocked unconscious after falling from a ladder in the attic, falling into a coma that triggers a series of increasingly disturbing occurrences, that lead the family to seek help.
MY THOUGHTS: What struck me immediately was the great use of music, it created an unsettling and creepy atmosphere, that left me in no doubt of what was to come. The majority of the film was tense and at times gripping. In saying that, the film contained moments that had the opposite effect, particularly when the audience finally get the opportunity to have a good look at the Demon. He is clearly a guy in a bad Halloween costume, a chance missed as the Demon should have been far more terrifying than it actually is. Byrne looks as if she could have a good meal but does well in a role she is used to, allowing the audience to feel her desperation and stress. Wilson has a unique ability to come across as likeable but also smug and unpleasant, and that is why he has had such a vast array of film roles so far in his career. At times the jumpy moments are recognisable, purely because the genre has been done to death with films like 'Paranormal Activity'. Director, James Wan is comfortable in the genre he helped redefine by making 'Saw' in 2004, and it shows. Wan has utilised fresh ideas on an old concept with innovative film making that enables the audience to immerse themselves in a genuinely good horror film. The final third of the film prevents it from being very good and in all seriousness is slightly disappointing, but the good work up to that point is not undone. It wasn't the standard movie in the genre that I was expecting, I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the final third, this is the best horror film I've seen in some time.
NEXT FILMS: Patrick Wilson will be seen next in the thriller 'The Ledge' with Terrence Howard and Liv Tyler, in a battle of philosophies between a fundamentalist Christian and an atheist escalates into a lethal battle of wills. Rose Byrne will be seen in the potential comedy of the year, 'Bridesmaids' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVzxbLWFQLE) with Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Watch 'The Next Three Days' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lti0vfCPZns) with Russell Crowe and the newcomer, Ty Simpkins. Check out Wilson's breakout role in 'Hard Candy' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSyoKOIx080) with a young Ellen Page and the visually stunning 'Watchmen' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4blSrZvPhU) with Carla Gugino, Jackie Earle Haley, Malin Ackerman and Matthew Goode. I recommend watching Rose Byrne for her performance in '28 Weeks Later' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adjhS1pWy0s) and as Jackie Q in 'Get Him to the Greek' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6ixkr0-qvo) with Jonah Hill and Russell Brand.

'Arthur' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Jason Winer Starring Russell Brand, Helen Mirren, Jennifer Garner, Greta Gerwig Running Time 110 mins
SYNOPSIS: This is a remake of 'Arthur' from 1981 with Dudley Moore. This time, Russell Brand (Arthur Bach) is a drunken, reckless rich boy. When his latest antics cost the family business some big bucks, his Mother (Geraldine James) decides he needs to settle down. Arthur is left with a big decision after a harsh ultimatum. Marry Susan (Jennifer Garner) or be cut off from the money. Susan is intent on marrying Arthur even though it is clear they have nothing in common and by chance, Arthur meets the likeable Naomi (Greta Gerwig) and his mind is made up.
MY THOUGHTS: Russell Brand is undoubtedly charismatic and this comes across well on screen, yet obviously an unconventional leading man. Perhaps this is proving to work in his favour with the success of his previous attempts, as Aldous Snow in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' and 'Get Him to the Greek'. Strangely, his voice at times became irritating with the way he was in certain scenes. Good performances from most, particularly Nick Nolte as Susan's father, Burt, although he requires subtitles as always and Luis Guzman is quietly funny as Bitterman. Greta Gerwig is very likeable as one of Arthur's love interests, Helen Mirren is basically Arthur's Mum/Nanny, Hobson but reacts to Brand's spontaneity well and helps bring calm to the proceedings. The film is a combination of genuinely laugh out loud moments, with serious instances, culminating in an underlying heart felt message. The film does fluctuate from being very funny to a handful of mundane scenes, but the positives out weigh the negatives. Sold direction from Jason Winer (A 'Modern Family' veteran). Worth watching for the genuinely hilarious scenes with Russell Brand.
NEXT FILM: Russell Brand will be seen next in 'Rock of Ages' with Tom Cruise and Catherin Zeta-Jones. A small-town girl arrives in Hollywood at the height of the 1980s rock-music scene. Jennifer Garner will be seen next in the comedy, 'Butter' with Hugh Jackman and Olivia Wilde.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Russell Brand was fortunate enough to play the eccentric rock-star Aldous Snow in 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2UCJVW-1Dk) as his character was extremely funny and that lead to the spin-off movie 'Get Him to the Greek' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6ixkr0-qvo). Check out Helen Mirren's Oscar winning performance in 'The Queen' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J1Wu0qGEev4). Check out 'The Kingdom' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZltyidbP1F4) with Jennifer Garner.

'Fast Five' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Justin Lin Starring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson Running Time 130 mins
SYNOPSIS: Dominic (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker) and Mia (Jordana Brewster) find themselves in trouble with the law yet again and flee to Rio De Janeiro only to be targeted by a ruthless drug lord named Reyes (Joaquim De Almeida) and federal agent Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson).
MY THOUGHTS: At one point I thought Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson was going to shout "Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?!" whilst eye balling Vin Diesel's character in the only way The Rock could, but he somehow refrained himself. The first half of the film is slightly predictable with action sequences and fast cars and nothing else. You could pick the film apart with the unrealistic outcomes of Dom and Brian's actions, even at the beginning when they rescue Dom from a Police Bus used for transporting criminals, crashes and is a complete wreck. How can anyone survive that crash?! They all do of course. But 'The Fast and Furious' franchise is not about picking apart the film, it is about unrealistic action and two hours worth of entertainment, nothing more or nothing less. It does what you'd expect it too, with some entertaining set pieces and a good twist towards the end of the film that keeps you engaged. At times I was thinking it was some sort of 'Oceans Eleven' without Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Dwayne's character does bring a fresh impetus to the franchise and a potential spin-off movie, as well as a lot of sweat! He doesn't stop perspiring throughout the entire film. Paul Walker brings his usual charisma and Vin Diesel brings...uh himself. The film ends with the possibility of yet another film in the series and one I expect to be made. Don't go into the cinema screen expecting anything other than a mindless action film otherwise you'll be very disappointed. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting and the final third of the film was decent enough.
NEXT FILM: The likeable Paul Walker will be seen next in 'Pawn Shop Chronicles'. When a missing wedding ring leads to a wild-goose chase involving meth addicts, skinheads, and an Elvis impersonator. Vin Diesel will appear in 'xXx: The Return of Xander Cage' next with Samuel L. Jackson. Dwayne Johnson will be seen next in 'Journey 2: The Mysterious Island' with Vanessa Hudgens and Michael Caine.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Check out Johnson in 'Gridiron Gang' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKeMVpVtrTE). He plays a councillor at a juvenile detention centre and attempts to raise their self esteem by playing American Football. This role showed his potential as an actor. Check out Paul Walker in 'Running Scared' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekr_IH1OL38) and Vin Diesel in his breakout role in 'Pitch Black' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-itu1C5oB5I). Don't watch 'Find Me Guilty' with Vin Diesel whatever you do, you won't be able to get that two hours back...ever.

'Red Riding Hood' REVIEW
FILM DETAILS: Certificate 12A Director Catherine Hardwicke Starring Amanda Seyfried, Gary Oldman, Max Irons, Billy Burke, Shiloh Fernandez Running Time 100 mins
SYNOPSIS: From the director of 'Twilight' comes the re-imagining of the fairy tale. Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a beautiful young woman whose parents have arranged a match for her with the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). But Valerie is in love with the handsome young Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), and the two plan to run away together. However, a werewolf attack on Valerie's sister throws their plan into disarray. The villagers turn to werewolf hunter Father Soloman (Gary Oldman) to protect them, but as the death toll continues to rise they are horrified to discover that the wolf, who takes human form by day, is living among them.
MY THOUGHTS: The basic structure of the film is very similar to that of 'Twilight', I can imagine the studio, Warner Bros looking for a quick profit with this film and therefore relying heavily on the fact that Hardwicke, directed the first book from Stephenie Meyer in the marketing campaign with the hope that 'Red Riding Hood' would appeal to the same audience in a similar way to 'The Twilight Saga', and failing miserably. This is a poor film. The film-making style used by the director is at times irritating for a number of reasons, one of which is due to the pointless shaking and strange movement of the camera on occasions. Only Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried come out of this film with their reputations still intact with decent performances. I wish I could say the same about the supporting cast who deliver distinctly average performances. The love triangle between Henry, Valerie and Peter barely fizzles. Even Gary Oldman can't prevent this film from being a disappointment. The fact that Valerie has a conversation with a CG werewolf during a scene in the film will no doubt have been designed for Team Jacob and the Twihards in mind.
NEXT FILM: Amanda Seyfried will be next seen in 'Now' with Justin Timberlake and Cilian Murphy. The film is set in the not-too-distant future where the ageing gene has been 'turned off'. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency and it is the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. The rich can live forever, while the rest attempt to negotiate for their immortality. Gary Oldman will be next seen in 'Guns, Girls and Gambling' with Christian Slater and Dane Cook. The story is centred around Elvis impersonators, Indians, modern Cowboys, an assassin, a college student, a corrupt Sheriff, and a prostitute who are racing to find a priceless artefact stolen during a poker game.
RECOMMENDATION: I would recommend watching Amanda Seyfried in 'Mamma Mia!' but I'm not a dork. Try 'Mean Girls' with the wreck that is Lindsay Lohan. Watch 'Batman Begins' for the legend that is Gary Oldman, or Oliver Stone's 'JFK' for his pivotal role as Lee Harvey Oswald, or his portrayal of Count Dracula in 'Dracula' with Keanu Reeves, directed by the peerless Francis Ford Coppola.

WATCH OUT FOR: 'WATER FOR ELEPHANTS'
RELEASE DATE: 04/05/2011
STARRING: Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon, Christoph Waltz
DIRECTOR: Francis Lawrence
SYNOPSIS: Based on the novel by Sara Gruen. Jacob falls for August's young wife, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon).
THE REASON: This could be the role that breaks the shackles from 'The Twilight Saga' for Robert Pattinson. To an extent, 'Remember Me' has gone some way to doing this but his character in 'Water for Elephants' has some real depth as well as a strong cast and captivating story.
