Sometimes I think about how some writers try to do what Suzanne Collins did with Peeta but all fail miserably. I mean, they try to write a male love interest that's "not like other boys," but only end up with a generic boy character who doesn't even have a personality?

I think what made Peeta so special might be Suzanne's own adoration for him. She just wrote a character she absolutely adored without thinking about the tropes or stereotypes. That's how she ended up with a uniquely likable character who also can't be put in any existing box. He's not the mysterious hot guy, not the timid boy next door, or the cocky popular boy in school. He's all of those things at once, yet none of them fully.

And I adore her enthusiasm when it comes to Peeta, like defending Josh's casting so passionately and humorously (I'd still cast Josh even if he had 6-feet wings and is bright purple.)

A lot of people bring up the term "male character written by a female writer" when describing Peeta. That's really the charm of his character. He's the ideal type a lot of straight women dream of.

It’s so easy to put yourself in the minds of the capitol citizens because you’ve had the hunger games your whole life and every year 24 kids go into the arena and only one comes out and then all of a sudden TWO come out and it’s so wild and you see the victory tour posters and they’re so different from all the ones before because there’s two of them and the ending was wild because two people decided they loved each other in spite of it all and even when they were told only one can leave they couldn’t do it and it’s all because they saw each other and said ‘this life has value. This life has value’ and it is so easy to be swept up in that. You look everywhere on screen and see that love conquers all, they have found each other and refused to let go, because two people looked at each other and said the only way forward is with this person without them everything means nothing. I would have lost my goddamn mind.

Thinking about how incredibly brave it was of Suzanne to make the main love interest a kind, sensitive, emotionally intelligent, disabled, stocky blond in 2008 when the trend at the time was skinny, tall, lanky, sarcastic, hates-everyone-but-main character, rageboy. And how absolutely genius it was to have BOTH of those types in the same series and have Katniss choose Peeta. Groundbreaking.

catching fire is full of so many randomly funny moments despite being incredibly horrific overall (just like the rest of the hunger games trilogy tbh) but nothing in any of the books has made me laugh out loud like finnick waking up when katniss and peeta were like this close to having sex while everyone else was asleep and being like "well i'm awake now. katniss you can rest and i'll finish your watch out with peeta" and then looking at them for a second and realizing what he just interrupted and being like "oh uhhh well actually you know what i can keep watch by myself and you guys can do whatever"
