Reuben Sutherland’s Kaleidoscopic Doodles
Reuben Sutherland is from New Zealand and is job is ‘mostly making arty graphic stuff’.  He makes his gifs as part of the Audiovisual duo Sculpture for live performances.  He views his gifs as ‘doodles’ just to show zoetropes and how they animate.  Despite his downplaying of these gifs as ‘doodles’ they are inventive, beautiful and mesmerizing.  I may even call these Art.

Marketing and Animation
There’s an app available on iOS and iPadOS called Procreate, which allows creating art digitally. They first published their app in 2011, and have since gained traction for its elegance and performance all around the world. Like last year in 2018, this year they have started a competition that artists can participate in - the 1st place winner will earn 5,000 USD and the 2nd place winner will earn 2,000 USD. They’ve beautifully crafted and designed a video for their audience to advertise their competition, and have it published on YouTube. Their marketing is well executed, with clean typography and pop-ish color palette as well being to the point, is a leading example of how others can market their product successfully. https://youtu.be/XIYUFUb_vxg (Note: This is not a sponsored message! But that’d be super cool)

Gris: The Beauty and Cruelty of Life
Gris: As we age, our innocence is slowly erased, and we become more aware of the cruelty surrounding us. The beauty of Gris is told through a young girl traveling, as we go onto a personal journey with her detailing grief, anxiety, and depression. It is dreamlike yet frightening realistic, simplistic yet powerful. The soundtrack accurately reflects the entire atmosphere of the game, immersing the listener into the world of Gris. Once the player starts the game, it’s almost impossible to set it down.

Naughty Dog has released a short animation about 2 weeks ago which shows how Ellie has matured and developed as a character over the span of 5 years - from when she was about 14 years old in TLOU1 to now, where she’s 19 years old in TLOU 2. The full video is available on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JclKytWG9Ro

The animation shows just how much she’s grown, as well as how she’s lost some of her innocence (even though she wasn’t very innocent even in the first game). This short animation honestly makes me even more excited than I already am, I can’t wait for the game to come out!

Animation in Gaming: An analysis on “A Plague Tale: Innocence”
We’re in 1348 - Aquitane, France. The game launches up, and we see a 15 year old girl named Amicia de Rune with her father and dog, travelling through the forest, They’re hunting to bring dinner on the way home. A smell captures the interest of their pet, and suddenly, it’s off sprinting to the forest. By the time Amicia catches up, it’s too late. The dog’s lower body has been decapitated, devoured, by something we don’t know yet. It feels as if only something so macabre would be capable of such an apalling act. They immediately head back home, but the French acquisition has infiltrated their estate and home land, and Amicia is tasked with protecting her little brother named Hugo, only five years old, who seems to be ill. The soldiers are asking for where the little boy is, and immediately, we think, “is the little boy connected to with what happened with the dog?”. They escape with fear for their lives, and the story begins.
This is one of favorite video games of all time. The story is emotional, and I felt for their relationship - caring for those you love. She was initially hidden away from Hugo for several years, so this is practically the first time we see her talk to her little brother. But as more obstacles go in their way, as they enter into more danger, we see Amicia’s love for him, willing to risk her entire life to make sure he’s okay. The facial animations were phenomonal, allowing us to understand them emotionally just by looking. And the background art and animation? It really felt like I was able to imagine myself being there, tagging along to the adventure and even feeling like Amicia herself. The atmosphere is carefully crafted to entice a feeling of danger no matter which way you go, the chance that death can come upon any moment. At the same time, you are protecting who is only five years old, not just physically, but emotionally. Even with everything around him, he is still naive and innocent, yet obviously changed. We must help him grow as his childhood is taken away. This game is breathtaking, and without out a doubt, a masterpiece.

Concept Art
One of my favorite childhood movies is WALL-E (2008), where a robot who’s a forgotten leftover on Earth, gradually becomes sentient and experiences emotion. He meets another robot named Eve who comes down to retrieve the last alive plant, and the rest is history.
Pixar’s concept art for the WALL-E movie is absolutely amazing, and I love to see how they originally drafted the designs for the robots, and still show their personality. They are objectively, completely mechanical, but they are more than just robots - they are characters who are alive. Their designs perfectly highlight this idea.

This is one of my favorite movies from one of my favorite animation studios, Studio Ghibli! Their level of detail, their style, is all absolutely amazing. Their movies always have the most magic, I can really see it as it’s own world with vibrant, unique characters. Their charm adds to the rewatch-ability, with never a dull moment.

I really love the pastel colors in this! The long worm-like creatures next to the leaf are adorable, and so is the cat’s expression with his slanted-down eyebrows to the girl it’s next to. This is really cute! After I saw this I went to the trailer on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiHtqxiwoao) and it’s absolutely amazing.

Art Exhibition
Unfortunately I haven’t had time to go to an film/animation festival or exhibition outside of school since university has been very busy. However UTA has an art exhibition located in the north section of the Fine Arts Building, which I believe rotates artwork every month or so. As always, it’s so much more gratifying to be able see artwork in person compared to seeing a digital picture. I’ve taken pictures but they don’t quite do the actual artwork full justice. The ones displayed overall had two distinct styles: neon sign art + photography and what looked like cultural collages. Both were so amazing to see up close - you can see much more clearly the craft and the textures and truly understand the size of the artwork. There were a few neon sign art + photography where it was “interactive”. If you looked one way, it looked like some of the words were sort of “turned off”, but if you looked a different way it’d turn back on. These were made by artists at UTA!
