Trying to get people into Petscop and 3D Workers Island like “no you don’t get it, it’s so good because it’s so sad. like it’s really really sad, you’ll feel so bad and unsettled, it’s great”

I love engaging with 3D Workers Island analysis and finding that there’s no consensus on anything. What a Rorschach test! It’s so ambiguous that many opposing interpretations can be equally supported by the text, so any individual’s interpretation says a lot about them
I especially love it when people describe scenes from the screensaver. “The scene where Holland throws a tantrum” “the scene where Amber reaches out to hug Holland and is rejected” except I’ve seen those exact same scenes also described as “the scene where Holland rolls around in the grass having fun” “the scene where Amber tells Holland something that scares them off”
It’s so interesting! I do think this is intentional, since we also see characters in the story disagree on what exactly they’re seeing. Is Amber lazily wasting her youth or tired from mistreatment? Neither has more concrete evidence than the other, but it sure says a LOT about PLawler that she interprets it as the former
#THISIS A GREAT POINT !!!!#had this moment when reading w gf and being like are pat and amber talking#n im like idk i think pat is scolding amber#etc

3D workers island spoilers below the cut!
“How many of them are sitting at the bottom of the ocean?
I just can’t help but feel hopeless about everything. Nobody will ever help me, and I’ll never help myself. I’m too afraid even to reach out. I’m not even writing this right now. This message exists only in my head. 3D Workers Island? What is this? Would I really put this online? Would I really give anyone the slightest glimpse into my world? This is fake. This is all fake, and nobody will ever see it.”
I haven’t seen this talked about a lot in analysis, though maybe I haven’t looked hard enough. The context that this is the daydream of an abused kid is really important, I think. It explains a lot of the odder aspects of the story.
Why does 3Dwi.scr lead to obsession in so many people? Why does it only show the violence to people willing to see it? Because this is a fantasy, the fantasy of being seen. The fantasy of there being people out there invested in finding out the truth. People who won’t turn a blind eye.
Even more important, though, is what this fantasy doesn’t include. No one helps Amber. No one can, and no one tries. They just watch instead of turning a blind eye, and that’s enough to make it a fantasy.
And even in the fantasy, there’s no concrete proof. There’s a leap of faith involved in seeing Amber’s abuse, because you can explain everything away if you want to. It can just be tall tales. It can just be photoshop. It can just be glitches. You don’t have to see it.
That ties in with the brief conversation on the forum about dismissing the things people have claimed to see as too gorey to be taken seriously, and someone responding that the gore isn’t the only thing. That Amber is tired and mistreated even without the gore. It seems that before anyone saw the graphic images or heard screams and whispers, they already were looking at the island with the assumption that something is happening to Amber. Multiple times people on the forums are told to look inside themselves in order to understand what is happening on the island. It’s all there, but if you don’t want to see it, you won’t.
So the fantasy isn’t even necessarily being seen, but someone wanting to see. Someone asking about the disease you made up. Someone acknowledging how hard it is to suffer in silence.
Amber is torn between worlds, and switching between them is described as inherently violent. Neither world is good. In fiction, she is being abused just as much as she is in the photographs, even if it’s not as visible. The whole fiction thing really goes well with the existence of 3Dwi.scr being a daydream. Thomas’s daydreams still involve abuse, and going back and forth between “there are people desperately trying to see me” and “I am completely alone” isn’t fun in either direction. And even then, the real intrudes on the fiction. This is all fake. This is all fake, and no one will see it.
I just think it’s really interesting to have a story so focused on escapism where the escapism is portrayed as violent and painful!

"I want to tell her, hey! You're young! Do something!"
Been so interested in this project since I found out about it, Amber and Grace are probably my favourite characters for obvious reasons
