Sailor Moon's Newspaper
Finally! We finished the final presentation! Really so happy about it, because we chose a supper complex topic - Artists' Rights. It involves a lot of legal knowledge, including property rights, copyright, etc. We thought a lot about making it easy for audiences to receive information about artists' rights when working on this topic. Because our target is young artists. We thought about the info many young artists may face or need to know, such as derivative work and Ntfs Art. I hope everyone who sees our newspaper will find it helpful. In the design of the container that carries the newspaper, my teammates and I hope to turn it into artwork and put it in the art gallery. Generally, people who come to art museums like art and painting, so to attract the attention of these people and let them read our newspapers, they must be ingenious. So we worked with the original logo we designed for Artists' Right and turned it into a sculpture to attract people to look at it and take a newspaper out of it. I really love this design, haha. During the whole process of designing the newspaper, the happiest thing is that the team members accompany me to conceive together. Sometimes one person's brain may not be careful enough or creative enough. But when the three brains are added together, we become super attentive and creative! We can share the workload together and enjoy the joy of the result together. I hope that people who read this newspaper can also feel the information and design intentions we want to convey!

Newspaper critique
In week 8, we looked at different groups of newspaper designs. What impressed me most was the design of The intimates. They designed the cover page with a lot of interesting elements, such as spam pop-up elements on the web. Use fruit as a metaphor for information and more. Their text is not much, but let us receive a lot of information.
Also, I love Three's newspapers, they designed the newspaper with a storytelling approach. The illustrations are cute and the story is interesting. And it is a legend about Hong Kong. By looking at other groups of newspapers, I feel that our newspapers have a lot of text, which may make people feel boring. So if we want to revise our newspaper, we will choose to reduce the text and use more pictures to express the information.
I think examining each other's discussions can give us a better understanding of our strengths and weaknesses. By learning about other people's designs, we can discover new design directions. For example, how can our layout be arranged, what form can be used to express information, and so on? We can also know our own strengths through the comments of others. I am pleased that my classmates feel that our color matching is very consistent. Our color scheme is comfortable, the information is valuable, etc. These allow us to keep improving and make us more confident.
Anyway, finally, we handed it in and finished this complicated topic!

Observational Research
I've been trying to write a novel recently. However, in my creation process, I found that I do not understand many details of life. For example, when I want to describe a person who is driving. Since I haven't experienced it myself, I don't know how to describe it truthfully. For example, what is the first step, insert the car keys? Step on the clutch? How many gears does the car have? The movement of the driver, what will his expression look like. We may not notice it in our lives. So when I tried to describe it, I found that I couldn't. So observational research can help us document these details of life. They can be a reference when we design and write. For example, if I want to describe a rainy street, how can I tell it realistically? I could record the rain sounds, the film the look of the roads and how people dress, even I can sketch it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Maybe I could write this:

Visual Message
In the first semester, I remember we used to talk about Gestalt Laws. It means that our perception of everything is based on our experience with the things we come into contact with. For example, if we've never seen a flower before, we won't realize it's a flower. People who have never seen the sea have no idea what the ocean looks like. We all sum up our own perception and cognitive experience of things in our daily life to form the brain's understanding of things.
This is very similar to the content in the Week5 class. We receive and express visual information, perhaps based on the object's line, shape, detailed characteristics, symbolic features, and abstract impressions.
Class activities:

Sketch a cat in 1 minute, 45 seconds, 30 seconds, 20 seconds, 10 seconds and 5 seconds.
A designer needs to create a sense of atmosphere.
I like to listen to music. Many times, I have not experienced the stories described in songs. However, I can feel the song that the singer wants to express through the melody and lyrics of the music, whether it is cheerful or slow, and whether the description in the lyric is happy or sad. All its components, such as lyrics, melody, singing, etc., express an abstract atmosphere.
Recently I really liked a Chinese song called "Horse." Its melody is cheerful. The lyrics tell of a horse that wants to leave "me" and is slowly running away from "me." The sound of a guitar is used in the melody to imitate the sound of a horse running. When all the abstract lyrics and melody come together, I feel like I am on the grassland, watching my beloved horse run away from me, and I feel reluctant to leave it. And finally, only I can hope that spring can come soon, and my horse can run safely and healthily in the spring sun.

I think a creator is a storyteller. The most important is how to arrange these elements so that people can successfully receive information. How to lure the audience into an atmosphere, be attracted, and feel what you want to express. Just like we want to draw a bird, we can express it realistically or only use the shape with its feathers, wings, or its beak to express it. We are concretize abstract feelings through language and images

Critique on my logo design Because the logo design is best to be simple and express the theme. Several of my designs are more complex. The lines need to be modified more than the parts, and the eagle lines in the design need to be adjusted because they are not like an eagle. Then the element of the hammer needs to be enlarged to highlight the meaning of right.
Tumblr media
In the beginning, we chose the theme of artist rights. Because it involves a lot of legal information, it is very complicated. So we decided to set the audience as young artists. First, because many young people don't know much about artist rights, we thought the newspaper's content would be helpful to them. In addition, as we are students who are interested in art, we understand the information that our peers want to know. So after discussion, we decided on two themes Derivative work and NFT Art. Secondly, we start to understand some information about artists in more depth. Also began to discuss what materials needed to be used. We decided to add some first-hand information about young people's views on this topic, and use second-hand information such as news, legal websites, etc., to answer common copyright issues and information on Derivative work and NFT Art. Some tertiary sources, such as Wikipedia, are also used to briefly explain proper terms such as artist rights, copyright, and property rights. Finally, we also began to look for some newspaper templates as a reference and plan our layout.
Tumblr media
I think that through repeated discussions and critiques, our design ideas have become more and more clear.

My Chinese New Year in 2022
It's the end of 2021. I still celebrated Chinese New Year's Eve in Hong Kong this year. I can't go back to my hometown on the mainland. It's really dull.
I would go back to the mainland with my family to meet my grandparents and cousins in the past. We would go to watch movies, drink milk tea, and play an online game together at my grandparents' house. But because of the pandemic, I haven't been back for two years. In Hong Kong, we have no relatives because of Covid-19. We cannot go to friends' houses to gather New Year's greetings. But when I went to help people with tutoring, the parents of the students gave me red envelopes. I was delighted.
Attached is a lonely street on the way to the student's home:

Research is the foundation of design
In the communication design lesson of Week 3, we try to define what Research is. Research is an enlightenment point for the design. I think design is a process of getting a test paper and then answering it. The client will set a question for us, and the designer should do some research first and then answer the question in an orderly manner. It is difficult to make up an answer out of nothing after getting the question because it lacks credibility and meaning. A good solution must be based on persuasive data. We have a lot of ideas for answering it. So when we design, we get the requirements or themes given by the client, which is our topic. For example, suppose a client wants to design a logo for a French restaurant. In that case, we need to know the characteristics of French cuisine and dining etiquette to think about the direction of our design and the elements that can be used. Another example is that a client wants us to design a poster to promote a ballet troupe's performance, so we need to know the background of the ensemble, the content of their performance, and maybe even the type of ballet shoes. When our Research is done more carefully and comprehensively, the more information we can use, the more design directions we have. So Research is the beginning of all design.
The Beginning Of Our Newspaper Design
We chose the topic Right through topic selection in class. But then we negotiated a lot about rights and found that there were just too many pet rights, human rights, feminism, etc. Finally, we saw a term for artist rights. Many people may not have heard the term artist rights, so we wanted to try it out. At first, I was baffled about how to make this newspaper. However, we started to read a lot of materials about artist rights, including videos, news, and some related websites. Gradually sorted out the contents of the newspaper. First, we defined who the readers of our newspaper were and then decided to be the artists. So, in the newspaper, we need to briefly introduce the definition of artist rights, what it includes, and why we need to know about artist rights. In addition, we consider which stakeholders are involved in the artist's rights, including artists, clients, art galleries, art lovers, designers, etc. We started thinking about what parts of the artist's rights these people would need to know about. Finally, we decided to do secondary creation and the now-famous Nft Art and answer some questions about copyright ownership. So after Research, we gradually began to have a design idea and direction. Also looking forward to our finished newspaper!

Melody in life
In the lesson of Week 2, we revisited a lot of design elements. For example, line, shape, space, shape, texture, value, color, etc. There are also some designed principles such as balance, emphasis, rhythm, unity, and contrast. I think the design elements are like the notes in the score, and the principle of creation is like the expression in the score. It's like expressing strength, gradient, repetition, etc., in a song. If the notes and presentations are used well, a piece of great music can be played. So every design has a melody. We designers are creators, trying to combine different notes and play them in different ways. In fact, there are many melodies hidden in life, like a building. There are lines, shapes, and space. The windows have a uniform shape that is repeated in a building. The colors of the sunset and the lights of thousands of homes form a song about going home and resting in the evening.
Tumblr media
This photo was taken in Tai Po where has many egrets. I captured the moment that an egret was standing on a tree. The contrast between the arrogance of the egret in the photo and the flock of birds behind it. Plus, a gentle light pink and purple sky. I think it's a peaceful and lonely song.
Tumblr media
This picture is the afternoon I saw the shape of the window reflected on the floor of my house. It was as if there was another space and world under my feet. I find it very interesting.
Tumblr media
Although the pandemic has made us less go outside, I discovered many details and interesting Conor at home. These life discoveries and facts inspire my design idea. I want to mark it down by using my paintbrush, haha. Hope people who see this post enjoy the "melody" in my life.

How design works?
This week is the first week of semester 2. It was also the beginning of my blog writing.
Since I went to university, many classes have mentioned what design is and how to design. In the first semester two communication design lesson, we saw a speech called "Words as Material." that tells about the method and the meaning of design. With this blog, I want to start sorting out my thoughts for design.
I am very impressed with the Being Peace quote by the author at the beginning of "Words as Material."
“If you are a poet, you will see clearly that there is a cloud floating in every sheet of paper. Without a cloud, there will be no rain; without rain, the trees cannot grow; and without trees, we cannot make paper. The cloud is essential for the paper to exist.”
To me, this sentence is very romantic. For poets, a cloud, a rain, a tree, and every detail in life are closely related to words and poems. So are designers, we are all creators. Our designs are inspired by time, materials, memories, other people's experiences; nature can even be eye contact, a breath.
What I want to say is that design is closely related to life. As designers, we need to be romantic and learn how to feel and discover beauty or critical things in our surroundings. The first step is to learn communication, not just with our customers, but with ourselves, lives, people, and nature. Because a good design is able to convey information and resonate
In university, professors teach us how to design. We should start brainstorming an idea. Then, after we make the research, prototype, experience, and improvement, we can finally complete a work. However, I am often stumped from the first step because I couldn't think of an impressive idea. You may tell me that good design needs to be modified and perfected step by step, but how can a person who has no feelings, no imagination, and lack of empathy create a work that can be resonated with other people?
Last three years of secondary school life, I have been preparing for the Dse exam, and also, because of the pandemic, my life has been lost a lot of fun. As a result, my life becomes uninteresting. I always feel that whether we become a graphic designer, product designer, advertising designer, etc. The first thing is to be a "life" designer. We must first learn to design our way of life because an immutable life will obliterate our perception of life, empathize with people, and destroy our creativity.
In learning the principles of design, I try to take time out of my work and school schedule to experience my life. I try to start feeling the emotion from a book, a song, sunrise and sunset, a conversation, and hiking. Then, I discovered that this world still has so much beauty. These life experiences are accumulating my design inspiration.
