"Do you ever—you know—think about the future?" you asked Daryl. The question was followed by the soft plunk of a pebble you tossed into the creek. "Or do you just focus on trying to make it through each day?"
He glanced sideways at you, electricity starting to prickle up his spine and cleared his throat. "Sometimes," he drawled softly. 'Think' maybe wasn't the right word. Daydream. Fantasize. Those were probably closer to the mark. He tossed a heavy rock into the creek and it made a loud, low splash that drew a soft laugh from you.
"What do you think about?" you questioned him, turning to catch his blue eyes. You thought his face flushed a little before he looked away again but maybe it was just the light.
He shrugged and bent to grab another rock, tossing it thoughtfully between his hands. "Oh, ya know... havin' a big screen TV and a hot rod. My new pair of kicks. World domination. Things like that," he joked.
You rolled your eyes. "Kicks? Really? You did not just say ' kicks'. Daryl! Come on!" you laughed. "I'm trying to be serious for five seconds..."
Daryl threw his stone and it skipped across the surface of the water and bounced up onto the bank on the other side.
Your eyebrows lifted. "Nice one." You nudged him with your elbow. "But really. What do you think about?"
He gulped and turned to look at you, licking his lips a little nervously and shrugging. His eyes flickered between yours. "I dunno," he said softly. But the way he was looking at you told you he did. Your heart jumped and started to race.
Prompt: "Do you ever think about the future?"

The Aims of Nautical Fights
Sink the other ship
Methods: ram, set on fire, blow a hole in the hull
Typical Contexts: out-and-out warfare, especially in the ancient Mediterranean
Advantages: fast, no person-to-person fighting
Drawbacks: getting close eough to the other ship exposes own ship, mass murder of the crew, no chance to get their cargo and provisions.
2. Plunder the Other Ship
Methods: disable the ship - damage mast/oars and other methods of propulsion - board the ship, get cargo and kill the crew - sink ship.
Typical Contexts: piracy, privateering
Advantges: valuable cargo sold for profit, much-needed drinking water and food sustain own crew for a while longer, selected captives can be ransomed or sold as slaves.
Drawbacks: dangerous, need to get close enought to gain access to the ship, crew unlikely to surrender, ferocious combat which poses significant risk to own men.
3. Capture the Other Ship
Methods: Capture ship while causing minimal damage and keeping the crew alove - put own officers in charge - add enemy ship to own fleet or collect prize money from the government (the ship will get a new flad, renamed and refitted)
Typical contexts: 18th-19th C Europe (Regency period inclusive)
Advantages: minimal losses of life, humane, gaining a ship
Drawbacks: difficult to capture a ship iwhtou firs samaging it captains may take foolish risks in the hope of prize money, captive crew needs feeding, captive crew may munity.
Weapons
The ship's weapons:-
a ram at the bow - for driving into the hull of another ship. There's the danger of going down together if the ram gets stuck in the body of the other ship.
Artillery - hurling fire at enemy ships to bring them down.
Warships with carry canons.
The crew's weapons:-
Sailors will almost always carry multi-purposes knives which can turn quickly into weapons.
The swords used by marines were always slashing swords (for cutting, slashing, slicing, very sharp, with a lightly curving blade)
Cutlasses are most often associated with nautical combat.
Ship or Boat?
Consider the follow factors when differentiating between a ship and a boat:
the historical period (different periods have different definitions)
the vessel's size
vessel's weight (ships are heavier)
the purpose (fishing vessels, ferries and submarine are typically boats, regardless of size)
the number of masts (three or more masts is a ship)
the number of decks (with more than one deck, it's a ship)
the shape (flat bottom means its a boat)
where most activity takes place (if on deck - boat)
where the bessel travels (if on a river, probably a boat)
Avoid using the words "ship" and "boat interchangeably just to avoid repeating the same word. They are not synonyms!
Use words like vessel, ferry, schooner, the brigantine, cutter, crusier, etc.
Propulsion and Steering
A ship cannot stop, start, swerve and reverse rapidly like a car.
Wind power - high speed, enables long distances, doesn't require the vessel to carry fuel.
Can't move in the abscene of wind
Can't carry out speedy manoeuvres in a battle.
Felling the mast will cripple the entire ship.
Oars (rowing) - allow for greater manoeuvrability, rapid direction changes, and relaively quick starts and stops.
Doesn't achieve great speed and isn't suitable for long distances.
Steam - creates speed, doesn't depend on wind.
Requires carry coal, which limits the amount of cargo that the ship can carry.
Vessels felled with oil or nuclear power can travel faster and vaster distances.
However, they still can't stop, start, swerve and reverse as quickly as a car.
Space
The deck of a ship/boat is a limited space where fighters can fall overboard, climb up a mast, jump down, or leap onto another deck.
It may be full of obstacles: the masts, coiled rops, possible clutter, crates and barrels of cargo and provisions.
There may be livestock, chickens in cages and goats tethered to the mast, intended to provide fresh meat on the long voyage.
Atmosphere
A sea battle will have interesting sounds like roaring canons, crashing masts, splintering wood, panicked chickens, waves crashing against the hull, the wind whipping the sails, the splashing of men overboard.

Writeblr intro post
So yeah when I first came here I didn't know this was a thing so I've been working on this in the background. Now that it won the poll, I'm making it now!
I'm going to edit this post as I go so it has more links as I make posts about my WIPs!
About Me
Hi. Call me Kaylin. It's a pen name but I like it. (Some people are just finding out this isn't my real name and y'all should've read the bio)
I'm an education major and do writing on the side and it's a huge passion of mine (hence why I want to teach literacy)
Asexual demiromantic sapphic (she/her) currently in a relationship - (I am comfortable within reason to talk about my experiences)
Love ask games and tag games and generally interacting with others
Love reblogging mutuals' writing talking about WIPs!
21+ but my WIPs are YA - I don't usually reblog anything with a mature community label (sorry in advance for mutuals who do), but when I do I mark it 18+ and I try to label content warnings (LET ME KNOW IF I MISSED SOMETHING)
I'm an educator by heart so I love giving feedback, know a lot about kids, and of course education psychology and theory
I have minor scoliosis, early start of arthritis in my hands, and chronic headaches and migraines attacks in control with medication if anyone needs to ask me about these experiences for writing purposes. I also occasionally use a cane due to knee pain from an injury.
I have an ultimate get to know me game here if you want to check that out
My asks are always open! Feel free to stop in whenever you want!
My WIPs

Ask to be added to or removed from the tag list! @thepeculiarbird @illarian-rambling @televisionjester @finchwrites
@nebula--nix @literarynecromancy

Ask to be added to or removed from the tag list! @illarian-rambling

What I Post or Reblog
Updates on my writing
Tag games and ask games! I love them dearly but it may take a bit to reply! I have a lot piled up and not all of them are simple. But I will get to them!!
Writing from others
Writing advice
Beta requests, book announcements, and intro posts to help boost!
I try to keep things positive! If I see a negative post about writing I'll usually reblog it with some positive spin. Sorry if that's annoying but it makes me sad that people aren't happy about writing.
I always try to include image IDs to make my blog accessible - if something is incorrect or you have any suggestions for making IDs better let me know!

Patreon
Tumblr media
Hey everyone!
I got a few asks in so I thought I would just address it here. So what's going on over on Patreon, you ask? Well, it all depends on your tier. However, no matter the tier, you will get two weeks early access to any chapter that comes out. Then, the higher up in the tier system you go, you will get up to 5 extra stories a month, about the RO's. If it is released after a chapter, then the stories will usually be post chapter shorts about what the RO's are doing. These are all insights into the story and the characters. There is also an After Dark section where I write short NSFW responses to prompts. All of which are about our RO's. Finally, if you join the top tiers, you can message me and request short stories and lore content.
All previous stories are unlocked upon signing up. So, essentially, if you sign up now, you have two years of back log to go through.
All support matters in this process so I thank anyone who can subscribe. If you can't, reblog reblog reblog.
Thank you to all you lovely readers. Now back to writing. :)

Not all consequences in storytelling must be negative
A consequence is simply something that happens because of an action or event.
So long as an action or event means something within the story, then there is no reason a consequence can’t be something good for your characters. As much as it can be tempting, we don't always need to torture them.

I've been writing fanfic for a long time, but now I want to write real stories. Do you have any tips?
First off, fanfics absolutely are ‘real stories’ - just because you’re not starting from original grounds doesn’t mean it’s not valid writing. That said, I’ve written plenty of shitty fanfic in my time, so I can definitely help out here
1. The full transition. I once wrote a fic and realised “Hey, if I change a few names here and there, I’d actually have an entirely original story”. Now I’m 66K words and counting into Byoldervine and you’d never guess that it was ever inspired by that specific fandom. You really can just take your fics and tweak them into something original
2. New everything. In fanfic, the world and the characters in it are already pre-established; if you’re reading fanfiction about a piece of media, you’re almost definitely gonna be familiar with said media. You don’t have to introduce new characters or explain the world to us, we already know, so we can just get straight in - but this doesn’t work in original stories, where the reader is new to everything. Remember that you have to do more explaining and add more descriptions in original writing than in fanfic
3. Action-packed. In fanfic, everyone is already emotionally invested in the characters, so slice of life and downtime is much easier to get to without it feeling boring. In an original work, however, the reader needs a balance of high and low tension in order to emotionally connect to the character. Looking into internal conflict (the problems that are going on within your character's mind or within their social circle) vs external conflict (the problems that are directly linked to the plot) can help you with this, but in general you need to balance high tension that shows us the excitement and the suspense and the fun stuff with low tension that shows us why we care about all of it beyond it just being cool
All in all, though, there isn't a huge ton of difference between original and fic writing, as far as I've picked up on. Mostly just cases of more blatant tropes or cliches or something like that, and it's not necessarily a bad thing for those to pop up in original works. Just have fun and put your heart into it like you would with your fics and you can't go wrong

Dear creatives going through an artistic crisis: there is a significant chance that what you really need is one (1) delicious treat and an hour long nap. Maybe also a shower.
I know it sounds insane but I was just there and it fucking works.

Let me love you quietly, with all the dreaming that in my heart sighs for you. Let me look at you from a distance and smile, so sweet is this secret love that beats for you. It colors my cheeks and makes my blood sing without you knowing it, and yet you are the reason for all of it. You are a rainbow in the sky, a sunset I chase, with a thrill that only the impossible can bring. Let me write you poems and paint you in to the stars and keep you there. My perfect love that does not know I love him so.

To Love The Damned
-
Maybe that old saying holds water.
"You cannot love another,
Until you love yourself."
Because try as I might,
I can't seem to get the timing down.
The careful balance of understanding
How love can be presented to you,
Effortlessly,
While also learning what effort
Is expected-
Has exhausted my bones.
To you, I am loved.
Beyond limits,
As easy as breathing.
And while I share the feeling,
That loving you is as easy as existing-
I can't seem to untangle the violence
From my root.
I spend hours away,
Yanking at the core of me,
To express the feelings I hold-
In a way that doesn't feel like
Spilling my blood at your feet.
That doesn't leave me feeling
Like a scribble among humanity.
I guard what is left of me,
With gnawing teeth and resentment.
These parts of me do not belong to you.
To watch the one you love,
Swallow the poison you've created-
Would bring anybody to the brink of madness;
Infect their soul with insanity.
The silence echoes against my being,
Where your laughter once was,
And I feel your hand on my throat-
Or is it mine?
