i am a selfish lover. i selfishly crave you even when you hold a hand that is not mine, i selfishly pray that the lips you kiss may never see you smile and i selfishly wonder how much will it cost me for a single crime.

I think that we all could've understood each other very well.
But the reality is that a random stranger, rather than a person you are close to, will listen more, will understand more, will focus more on what you're trying to say.
A "close" person will always be blinded by something called love. Which sees nothing beyond their idea of your well-being. Their idea of how you should live your life so that you'll be safe. It all comes from a soft, pure place in their heart, and the most genuine of intentions. But somehow the fears that they harbour within their hearts for their loved ones fail to make a place for "detached" understanding, which more often than not is the most important thing a person needs to function as an individual.
This culture of being loved beyond everything, "sought", "cared for" has impaired our senses to the extent that we fail to understand that we have certain responsibilities towards each other and our own selves, that we all are afterall human beings and not assets, and need to be treated as that.
I believe that every human being has their own set of experiences. No two people get the same interpretation of a single experience, let alone the totally different ones we all come across in our individual lives. Then why is it that we impose our interpretations upon each other?
We're afraid that our loved ones may face the same thing as we did. We fear for the people we love. We keep them prepared, unless we won't be there to save them.
And that's where we start the cycle.
That's why a random stranger from another continent ends up being the one who understands you like no other human being. Why a random stranger from a century ago writes something you've been wanting to hear all your life.
Because strangers communicate with no barriers in between.
