Childhood.

The worst part about being trans isn’t the transphobia.

Not the looks we get when passing by.

Not the way my binder doesn’t flatten my chest fully.

But knowing I’ll never have the same childhood other boys had.

Getting called a masculine name.

Getting boy toys.

Getting clothes with dinosaurs on them.

Getting to be a son and not a daughter.

Knowing that I’ll never be like the other boys is like a punch to the gut.

I’ll always be a little girl at heart, that’s how I was raised after all.

Barbies, ponies, dresses, bows, princesses.

I’d do anything to start over, to be a boy.

To get toy cars on Christmas.

To get my first buzzcut.

To play catch with my dad.

To just do boy things.

“Just maybe in another life.”

I tell myself, knowing damn well I’m not brave enough to start another life.

I wish I grew up in a room where the walls were painted blue, not pink.

Where I could rough house, and it’d be brushed off as “boy things.”

I’d get to play with dinosaurs, cars, monster trucks, dragons.

I’d cut my hair short without getting criticized by my family.

I’d get to have a birthday party where the cake isn’t a disney princess, but a superhero.

I’d get to be batman on halloween instead of “fitting in” as catwomen.

I wish I grew up the same.

I wish I wasn’t a girl.

I wish I liked who I am.

I wish I were a boy.
