Big Hero 6 Centric Essay Series
Picking apart Big Hero 6 got me noticing a lot of things about the characters and/or world that I find really interesting to think about. There's too many to condense into a single post because the range of specificity between topics, as well as what I have to say on them, is too wide to condense without trimming a good portion of worthwhile disection. So, instead of even attempting to condense them, I'll be turning them into a series of "essays," where I can fully articulate what I find interesting about each topic as well as open them up for discussion. The working name of the series is just "Interesting" so far, but I'll probably change it later.
I won't be going in any particular order, just whatever I feel like writing about that day or continuing a train of thought from the prior post. As of right now, topics mostly related to Hiro and his family, crime culture in San Fransokyo, and extrapolations on Obake and Momokase's characters are at the front of my mind. Of course, when those get written is a bit up to chance, and if something entirely different sparks my interest first, then I'll write about that instead.
Some essays will focus entirely on canon, some including tie-in and non canon media, and some inculding or relating to the City Rising AU if there's ebough relavence. The first part of this series should be done either late tonight or sometime tomorrow, so I'll see yall then!

I've been in the mood to start yapping about my City Rising AU, but before I do that, I really need to write some kind of overview for it so we're on the same page. This post is ultimately temporary because I want to write a better one later, so this one's gonna be a bit bare bones.
BUT FIRST!! Just a quick disclaimer.
As of right now, I AM planning on trying to turn this au into a webcomic. That being said, it's subject to change based on life events or just deciding I want to put my time to a different project in the future. If that happens, I'll dump the entirety of City Rising's plot, scripts, and anything that would have been spoilers otherwise. I'm REALLY trying to avoid that, though, because I'm really attached to this project. I want to share it in the way it's intended to be experienced.
And now that that's out of the way-
City Rising is an AU that's gone through a LOT of change over the years. Originally, it was a take on the current BH6 universe/characters if it was more in line with the comic universe, but ultimately got completely scrapped when I fell out of BH6 a few years ago. What made me come back to BH6 was discussion around Callaghan's writing in the movie. Now that I have better critical analysis skills, I started brainstorming ideas on how I would have hypothetically handled his writing. This was supposed to only be a small exercise, but the more fun I began having, the more it spiraled out of control until it became what it is now. Consider City Rising a self-indulgent extrapolation on the characters and aspects of the world I found very interesting.
Because City Rising started as a rewrite, MUCH of the original plots and character arcs are still intact, following a similar path up to a certain point. Especially the events of the movie and season 1 of the series. After that, this AU begins diverging HEAVILY from the source material, and plots will have different progression, massive changes, rebuilt from the ground up, be completely original all together. I'm hoping to keep the transition between familiar and entirely new plot progressions from being jarring, but knowing what the divergance is, I know it's gonna be a leap no matter what lmao.
Any changes I made to characters varied based on a few things: What I thought fit better into this AU, it lended itself to a story I wanted to tell, provided a more nuanced approach, and just things I thought were fun for me(within reason). I mostly stayed away from altering the established personality of the characters because not only do I enjoy them as they are, I just didn't feel like significant changes were necessary. The only one I can consider changed in personality specifically is Krei, but that's just the result of making his characterization between the movie and series more consistent.
As far as the world goes, it's nearly identical to the universe in the series with a few exceptions. Mainly that the existence of monsters isn't a new development, having existed for quite a while before City Rising takes place. Not everyone in the population has knowledge of this, and fewer have any level of understanding regarding monsters.
This AU went unnamed for a long time until I eventualy settled on City Rising. It's named after Lenore Shimamoto's painting because I thought it paired well with the kind of overarching theme I want to explore. Something along the lines of being able to persevere and grow in the face of tragedy and tribulation. Furthermore, the name also applies to modern San Fransokyo! The city is currently inching closer to a boiling point of civil unrest and the characters who call this city home work hard towards not only restoring San Fransokyo's foundations but also improving upon its framework to better support its communities.
The themes around grief from the movie are still intact, but it's not the central focus anymore. Reasons for this are generally the broader story, though the biggest one is a specific plot change made later into the story. So, instead, it'll be coveted in a few different ways with the themes of specific characters, primarily Hiro, Tadashi, Cass, and Callaghan. I'm planning on handling other more specific ideas relating to the other all theme the same way.
I thiiiink that's all the bases off the top of my head. Very bare bones, and honestly, I still feel stuff's missing, but I think there's just enough here for now that I can comfortably yap here. As much as I'd love to go ahead and write a bunch of posts, I gotta go to work now, so I'll write to yall later. ✌️

I've been using index cards to outline my bullshit,,,, dawg this isn't even a fifth of the notes I gotta make just from ideas off the top of my head :'). I have absolutely no idea how big this stack is gonna end up being, but I'm having the time of my life getting all this together, and at the end of the day that's all that really matters.

Have you ever wondered what happened to those dogs Di Amara donated to the SFPD? Do you think they were normal, or do you think that department was about to reenact The Thing(1982)?

If any of yall are interested in any original stuff I make in the future, I have a blog just for my Falling Stars project! I'll be jumping back and forth between stuff for my main blog and stuff for my ocs^^
Concepts, Sketches, and WIPs
It's been a while so here's a little update of some things I've been working on! There's not a whole lot here since most of this time has been spent on world building and writing, but I do have some stuff to show.
Tumblr media
First up is what was ORIGINALLY part of Inktober, but it slipped through the cracks pretty much immediately lmao. Using this mainly to start getting a stronger idea of Ridgeland's territory but also drawing character's I haven't drawn in a long time. From closest to farthest you have Echo, Cinder, Shrew, and Maple. Echo and Shrew are long time hiking buddies and opted to bring their daughters with them on this outing. HOPEFULLY I'll have this one finished soon.
Tumblr media
These are the warmups I did of Echo(left) and Shrew(right) before starting on the hiking sketch. I'm still in the stage of trying to figure out effective ways to translate designs I made intended for quadapedal characters into bipedal designs so any warmups of this nature are also experimental. I do think when I made these, I just about hit a stride I like, though!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up are these character concepts. These were drawn up several months apart. The first is a character named Yucca who lived LONG before the current time Falling Stars takes place in. Her background is pretty important to the lore, so I can't get much into it at the moment, unfortunately. The next is named Peach, and she's a cat of Pluoca. She was the first character I had drawn in the current style, and so this sketch laid the groundwork going forward. I'll get more into her story when I get around to doing proper character sheets later on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now onto two flag designs/sketches that are bound to change a bit, one for Ridgeland(left) and one for Rusland(right). I was thinking of having hairly consistent flag designs between the different nations, but I'm not sure if I'll be sticking to that in the end. Not TOO fond of Ridgeland's flag, honestly, but I do like Rusland's sketch a lot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And finally, some sketches from when I just started reworking Falling Stars! The first is a set of sketches I made trying to figure out how I wanted to draw the cats upright, VERY trial and error. Peach's sketch came from this page. The second is an idea I had for what animals the cats may have domesticated, but I ended up scrapping it for something else. Still kinda like it, considering I hadn't drawn a Pronghorn before then.

Sometimes I get weak in the knees thinking about how much Honey Lemon and Gogo love each other in that damn show. I could write entire essays on the topic especially form Gogo's point of view, but something about Honey Lemon's dedication to making MULTIPLE oil paintings of Gogo just because she wants to is a whole 'nother level of gay. Like renaissance artists being commissioned to paint holy figures and then depicting them in the image of their lovers kind of gay. She has that whole friend group beat in the way only a queer person raised Catholic could do.
