The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides

Just finished reading this book. Totally inhaled it. Good writing, solid start and solid middle. The ending is weak but the last 2-3 sentences are like slow steaping tea, every time I try to remember them it takes a different life of its own. I couldn’t feel too much for the most tragic character though, the book could have benefited from different POV characters or more third person narration.

Point is: I recommend, very easy read. Stats from bookly:

I read the book in a total of 5h 3m 9s. My average reading time was of 17.5 minutes with 17.8 pages read per reading session. It took me a total of 17 reading sessions to finish the book. My reading speed was of 58.8 pages per hour at 1.0 minutes per page. Not too shabby!

Take2:Revitalization of a Blog, or how I started writing again

Happy new year Tumblr!

I ended last year on a pretty low point. About as low as a new grad student can feel without any promise of funding, or prospects of a research advisor. Boo hoo. A'ight, got that out of the way. Moving on.

I am no stranger to new year resolutions and how annoying they can be. Still, since I am not a very smart person, I have taken on a new year’s resolution yet again. Which is…start writing for half an hour everyday. That’s not the only one, I have a whole bouquet of resolutions for 2016, but I don’t want to unwrap all my crazy in one go.

Why the very mechanical and hard constraint? For discipline

What can discipline give you that unrestricted, chaotic creativity can’t? The grit to channel that creativity into the form I seak

Seriously…why are you going through this? I want to write a book. Not right now, but at some point. If there is anything I have learnt from grad life, it is that preparation is not for wimps, it is for the maker, the doer. I don’t want to be a wimp

Is there something else that you are hiding? Alright, I’ll admit it. I have forgotten how to write. I want to bring about a forced remembrance.

I won’t be posting each and every half an hour motivator/self-conversation/or-whatever-I-decide-to-take-on-at-midnight over here, but will try to post at least one cool page every week.

Ends and Beginnings

"If all worked out but she did not exist, it would have all been for nothing", Adam thought as he stared at the unearthly black and blue undulating mass of...God knows what at this point.

Adam thought back to his best memory of her, it was easy to do so as it was also his best memory of before. That day on the beach. After the pendant, the time machine but before her...no, he won't say that word. Saying makes things tangible in the present rather than a fleeting evening shadow of the past.

If ever there was a time when he thought his choice and action would matter and not just the pull of time's strings, then that was it, on the beach. The thrill of spilling it all while knowing nothing else could ever have happened was freeing. Not because of what had already happened later at the party but because of the inevitable pull between a Jonas and a Martha, in spite of how or when they came to be. Because of the pain he still felt when Magnus' eyes sparkled the way hers used to or when he woke up hyperventilating at night his hands soaked with her blood, but not any more.

"The moment is finally here", he thought as he strapped on his gas mask. "I need to end the world, for her to begin again". As it all went, this unfortunately had to start at the beginning of it all, at the moment she ends. "I'm doing this for you, Martha. I exist for you". This was the last thing he though before Magnus alerted him saying: "It's time, Adam". And Adam walked into the light.
