I got Marvin to flare at a pen today. 🖊

I have been trying to teach him this trick for about two weeks now. He would never flare for his reflection, and usually just swam away quickly. Today I only used a pen and no mirror, but I showed him a video of a female flaring before hand which he seemed to watch.

He is a slim boy, so even when he flares his gills don’t stick out too far. I don’t know if bettas can see color, but he has only flared for my purple pen so far.

Back to angrily eating a single pellet in the morning before swanning off to the other side of the tank!

He was Not Happy that I opened my curtains at 7:00 am this morning. He's about as much of a morning person as I am, which is to say, not at all!

I lowered the current on Marvin’s filter today.

I think it was a bit strong for him. If he was hiding during feeding time I would have to turn it off, or the current would carry his food away before he could eat it.

The case of the filter sticks out of the waterline (while the filter itself is submerged) and the water cascades down it, so I stuck a clean and dampened woven sponge (because particles might break off some of the other kinds) in the top of the filter.

This doesn’t interrupt the flow of the water back into the tank, but it does smooth it out creating more even streams which resulted in a more gentle current.

Hope Marvin likes my jury-rigging!

I tried soaking the bloodworms this morning to see if softening them up would make them more palatable for Marvin.

This received less response than just giving him the food as is.

I can tell he is hungry because he swims up to the top of the tank a lot more, especially right under the feeding flap. This was the last attempt trying bloodworms for now. Tonight he goes back to pellets.

At the end of next week, I may try introducing frozen brine shrimp. 🦐

The evening feed got a really sassy wiggle directed right at me, but no bites.

Day 2 of trying to introduce Marvin to bloodworms: he pokes at the worm (freeze dried) with his head, and then literally turns his back on it like he’s mad it’s not one of his pellets.

So fussy!

I will try again this evening and once more tomorrow morning, then it’s back to pellets for a bit.
