been thinking about irisu syndrome again recently, extremely good game

Irisu Syndrome is quite the addicting puzzle game and even though it's ancient it seems like very few people really know about it? Granted, the game kind of filters itself, you can only play it on PC and to experience the full joy of it you have to play it in the window and pay attention to the folder where you installed the game at. A lot of the charm and coolness of the game is easily lost if you're just not paying attention or decide to take breaks. Which is weird, I feel like such a good game should be more known about... and maybe a bit more accessible.

I think most people (and by most people I mean me) just play it a few times, see the bad ending, then if they decide the game is fun at all they might see the "good" ending. Either way, they'll walk away confused, and since the requirements for unlocking Metsu mode (and by extension the rest of the story) are kind of up in the air it's likely they won't continue further. Not even the wiki seems to agree on what the requirements for unlocks are, nor can they provide pictures or sources. The "Irisu Syndrome Explained" video series is full of out-of-date links and the first video relies on annotations for its commentary, which are gone from Youtube. But even this series which is somehow the most accurate source of information on this game has a few issues that they had to address in later video entries. Which is... pretty funny to say the least, and speaks to how odd this game is.

Anyways, if you decide to peer past all of that, there's a melancholic story that unfolds via a series of .txt files that describe the point of view of a few characters and in-universe notes. It took me a few years after my first playthrough to replay it and figure out the gist of the story, aside from just going "oooh cool 4th wall break" and being done with it. It's a great game, and if you haven't played it you can give it a try here.
