An Evening with the Burly-Q Babies @ The Rock House

Earlier this month I was invited to photograph a burlesque show by the Burly-Q Babies. As always it was a great time; any event where you can have a drink with friends and make good photos is something I can't pass up. Here's a few from the December 10 show.

Here's a few photos I took during a Sunday out with my girlfriend this past July. It was a beautiful day outside, we had already gone to the beach and then we decided to go to a the small petting zoo at Lester's Farm to see the baby goats, piglets & calves born in the spring! Great day.

OCAA Rugby - Loyalist Lancers vs. St. Lawrence Vikings @ Loyalist

Had some fun shooting the Lancers rugby teams as they faced off against St. Lawrence during the men's and women's games this weekend at Loyalist. This was my first time shooting rugby and I gotta say I really like it; the action is fast and the game is exciting to watch (especially when you have to jump back from the sidelines to avoid becoming part of the play!). During the ladies game it was absolutely freezing outside and overcast, by sunset it had cleared up and the light was great for the men's game.

Gravity Fest 2011

Downhill Skateboarders stream down Pitt St. in Picton towards Gravity Fest's infamous "crash corner", a fearsome 90 degree left hander considered by many riders as one of the most difficult corners in the IGSA NorAm Downhill Series. Riders must brake heavily from nearly 80 km/h by using air braking and sliding the board before cutting through the apex of the corner just inches from large straw bales.

This is my very first video piece. I had such a fantastic time shooting it, and learned a ton through the editing process, though assigned time limits force me to keep the video short and concise. This project was a huge undertaking for me and it reassured me that this is what I want to do.

The 709 Derby Girls - Newfoundland's first roller derby league

This is a story I worked on over a few weeks in August. The bulk of the project will culminate in a multimedia project in a few days when I get through the tedious editing process.

This was my first real documentary project and it was probably my most rewarding experience as a photojournalism student so far. It was also my first time shooting a formal multimedia piece and it was a real learning experience (both while shooting and in the hours put in while editing in Final Cut Pro.)

The idea for the project came from a passing discussion with a co-worker during a break one day, and after a few months of mulling it over I finally contacted Terri Jane Maxwell (founding member of the 709 Derby Girls). I got fantastic access; the girls were phenomenally welcoming and let me invade their privacy with a big camera rig for a few days, and even let me mount my helmet cameras on them- for that I'm extremely grateful.

Here's a photo story compiled from the shooting days. Still photos were admittedly put on the back burner for this project as I struggled with the learning curve of new equipment and techniques, but as a PhotoJ I would be in remiss if I didn't try to catch a moment or two as the opportunity arose.

Capelin rolling at Middle Cove Beach

MIDDLE COVE, NL (07/03/11) - Tom Linehan uses a borrowed net to catch capelin which spawn in large schools just off shore every summer.
