Been checking Black Mirrors tag for a while and Ive noticed how White Bear or San Junipero are everyone favs ep (nothing wrong with that) but why is no one talking about Hated in the Nation which I personally think is the best ep from all 5 seasons? The message it gives makes this ep the winner for me.

I may still dislike the pessimism of Black Mirror and some apparent technophobia, but after watching Hated in the Nation and Men Against Fire I have realized the true aim of the show: to show us the kind of monsters we can become if we let someone else control our perceptions. To control the perception of a population you don’t need fancy technology; you can spread lies and enforce them with enough violence that people would believe them and enforce them themselves.
If there’s technological progress, but there’s no social progress, then humanity will face great horrors at the hands of the the powerful and merciless. Technology on the hands of the kind creates heaven, but technology on the hands of the arrogant creates hell.

“So, your bees, your ADI’s. Talk me throught them.” “Colony collapse disorder, we still don’t know what’s behind it. Bees themselves were virtually extinct, so what our ADI’s do is effectively stand in for them. They’re solar powered, they don’t eat nectar, but they polinate flowers the same way; they crawl inside, pollen sticks to their legs and it gets brushed off next flower they visit.”

I love how black mirror is this genuinely dark, satirical show that warns us about humanity’s nature and our dependence on technology while also having some truly ridiculous premises that somehow end up working brilliantly
*the writers behind The National Anthem* alright how do we present the dangers of being too caught up in social media to actually notice what is going on in reality and the way people gravitate towards public humiliation?
That one writer: hear me out. Let’s have him fuck a pig
*the writers behind Hated in the Nation* ok guys we need to write a satire about the danger of the mob mentality of social media, government surveillance, and also tie in environmental destruction by humans
Another writer *snorting a line of cocaine*: BEES MOTHERFUCKER

i feel like people watch these Black Mirror episodes and talk about how ‘shook’ they are but don’t actually digest the messages that are embedded in each episode. it’s one thing to actively disagree with these points, but it’s another to be shaken by them, think twice about your own positions, and then chuck these reflections away when real life replicates a situation like this.
people celebrating a man’s suicide is just so barbaric to me. i can’t belive how many people claimed to be stunned by the “Shut Up and Dance” or “White Bear” episode and then when this shit happens in reality, we turn into carbon copies of the aggressively pro-retribution types that these episodes warns us about.
what also bothers me is how people in my school go on and on about Indigenous sentencing circles and how great it would be to incorporate these values into our criminal justice system but when push comes to shove, you guys step away from the forgiveness, compassion, understanding etc that these sentencing circles are advocating for. so what the fuck do you think you are endorsing? something that is inclusive in theory but in practice, chuck out the hard work it takes to make sentencing circles effective??
