Ever since the beginning of time, humans have felt threatened by their fellow species. The goal is self-preservation rather than preserving the world around them. At the same time though, there has never been another species so hell-bent on destroying their habitat than the human race.
She watched the seasons come and go. Where one life ended, another started. Humans were fast to reproduce, she realized, but they were also just as fast to die. Sickness and injury are the biggest threats to the human body.  You could be okay one second, then on your deathbed the next. While the female body could withstand the terrible strain of childbirth, it stands no chance against cancer. You could bleed out in seconds if the right vein is nicked, and if you fall the wrong way, a broken neck will either kill you instantly or leave you dependent on machines for the rest of your life.
While humans are considered the most sophisticated species since the beginning of time, they are all collectively fragile.
The last time she was actively human, she didn’t even have a quarter of the knowledge at hand that she gained later in life. Times have changed since then. The world grew into something new, something modern, and the human race evolved with it.
They’ve never had many nice words to say about her kind, so it came naturally to be terrified of a species that was more than willing to eradicate her own.
Sure, killing and blood-sucking isn’t something that goes over well with a crowd, but she often emphasized that they weren’t all cold-blooded murderers. Not all vampires were the same, and the lore often got it wrong.
Cold, they were, but only temperature-wise. Her half of the litter, anyway. And they were murderers too, else they wouldn’t have survived this long. Drinking blood to survive was a curse she wished upon no one. It naturally made her species reborn killers; they had to take a life to sustain their own, and since death and starvation weren’t in the cards without a stake through the heart, they had to follow their most primal instincts.
She tried to refrain from murder like a good citizen, and it worked, most of the time. There are other ways to get blood that doesn’t involve murdering an innocent. In Hell’s Kitchen, she could easily roll open a map and point to a random place, and she surely would have found criminals deserving of punishment.
But there were also humans who didn’t fear her species, those who were willing to give to the cause voluntarily. They liked to call themselves blood-submissive as if it were a sexual practice on its own – the sex was a nice byproduct, and some of those people were born to be whores, but making it a new trend was something she wished would never happen.
Though she was well aware of the subculture around humans fetishizing vampires, who were all more than ready to give their blood. Humans are so susceptible to overstimulation, especially through strange forces, even the smallest taste of a vampire’s blood could get them high enough up the precipice to push them into an orgasm.
That was the one thing that enticed her the most; the human anatomy, and how responsive they were to stimuli. She knew all about it, and yet she found herself surprised again and again whenever she lay with someone new.
That evening though, she woke up with a heavy feeling in her stomach. One that wouldn’t go away.
She entered the kitchen of her shared home to find a stranger sitting on one of the stools at the kitchen counter. Two very obvious holes adorned the young man’s neck. He didn’t look terrified when he saw her, only overly tired and perhaps a little drained.
She sighed heavily, moving to get herself a drink from the fridge. Not that she had one already sitting there, but he wasn’t hers to take. He had already been labeled with two very sharp fangs that could only belong to one person.
“Eli, you left your dinner in the kitchen!” her voice bounced off the high walls, doing black flips until it finally made the human twitch. “No offense,” she said. “I’m just not a fan of waking up to blood banks sitting at my kitchen counter.”
He opened his mouth, but no words would come out.
She grinned. With her mug in hand, she returned to ask the boy, “Coffee?”
He declined.
“Well, you can’t say I haven’t tried to be hospitable with you.”
Just in time, Eli came around the corner wearing nothing but a pair of boxer briefs. She rolled her eyes. It was one of those guests.
She met Eli somewhere around 1800 when she spent some time in the deserts of Egypt. He was only a couple of days old then, bitten by a passing vampire with no regard for human life. Eli was lucky to have survived, but with no one to teach him, he went rogue and slaughtered his entire village in a hungry haze. When he came to, the life he once knew had been destroyed beyond repair.
She saved him. Initially, she planned to just pass through, but the word about a vampire on the loose traveled fast, even back then, and so she found herself in Eli’s village soon after, convincing him to join her. She saved his life and therefore, he felt as if he owed her. They never left each other's side again.
Though sometimes, Eli was particularly hard to live with. He was almost like an unruly child, and he left his food lying out most of the time – he tended to forget that wasn’t the only hungry one in the household.
“Would you stop calling every human I bring home a blood bank?” he said.
“If you stop letting them stay for breakfast,” she retorted.
He met her bitter smile with a sour one of his own. “Not everyone feels the need to submit to you as Talon does.”
“Maybe I should make that a rule then. I mean, I am the head of this coven, after all. The least you can do is give me some respect.” She eyed the young man still sitting at the counter, completely hypnotized by the shirtless man prancing around the kitchen. “And your blood whores, too, before you start giving them a sexually transmitted human disease. Or turn them into one of us.”
He scoffed. She patted his shoulder as she passed by him, taking the chance to whisper into his ear, “Would be a shame if I had to drive a stake through one of them when all they signed up for was just a little fun.”
She couldn’t help herself. On her way out, she passed by the helpless human, pulling his head back by the hair to reveal his deliciously long neck, and she dipped her nose to take him in. The blood running through his veins smelled beyond divine. Sweet temptation. She wanted to bury her teeth in his soft skin and suck until he was empty. “Ah, delicious,” she said. “Youngblood, untainted, pure. Excellent pick. I wonder if he tastes as good as he smells.”
The tips of her sharp fangs scratched at his neck, and she had to force herself to pull away before she could make the mistake of taking Eli’s food off his plate.
“Get him out of here,” she told him. “Before I make you bathe in holy water for the rest of the week.”
He rolled his eyes. “Yes, ma’am.”
The respect issue was a problem she had to deal with. She wasn’t someone to play around, with except for the bedroom. She was nothing if not playful there, with someone writhing underneath her and begging for the mercy of pleasure, and they would always get what they wanted and deserved. She was considerate like that. But her lovers also never struggled to pay her respect. That seemed to be a family problem only.
Perhaps she had to assert more dominance over them too, even if it was just for kicks. They would learn soon enough. It wasn’t exactly easy to be a leader, after all. That was common knowledge even amongst the undead.
The vibrations of the phone in her pocket caused her to look up. She checked the text – a piece of technology she was quite fond of, the cell phone – and if she hadn’t been pale enough already, she surely would have turned white as a sheet right about now.
“What happened?” she asked as she entered the main room.
Talon nodded his head. “I just got word from my source at the police station,” he told her.
“And?”
“There’s been several suspicious murders in Hell’s Kitchen in the past week.”
“If I wanted a broken record player, I would have gone into the attic. Spit your words out now, Talon, or I will cut out your tongue.”
He flinched, remaining in his position with his head bowed downward. He couldn’t look into her almost blacked-out eyes and be met with disappointment.
“The victims have been drained of most of their blood, but the injection sites are sloppy, so a lot of the blood got wasted and spilled around the corpses,” he said.
“That’s… graphic.” She rolled her eyes. Chaos only compelled distraction. “But not at all the details I need,” she said.
“Yes, I was just getting to the important part. There’s security footage that shows a foreign party escaping from the site of the murder, and the same person is shown a couple of days later attacking the third victim in a blood-thirsty rage.”
The scenery sounded all too familiar. She tilted her head, intrigued by his report, and moved forward. “What exactly are they saying?”
“The police are blaming it on a new drug epidemic that has the users acting out to the point they would cause a blood bath. The drug supposedly triggers hallucinations that make them unaware of their surroundings and crave violence.”
“You mean blood. The drug is making them crave blood.”
“That’s what they’re thinking, but it’s not in the official report.”
“Yeah because that drug is called vampirism and that’s not exactly an epidemic that should be happening,” she said.
Talon nodded. “Police are issuing a warning,” he told her, “without knowing what they’re warning from. It’s just a couple of kids overdosing and bleeding out in the most ghastly of ways. They’re saying it’s drugs because they don’t understand.”
She grew more and more agitated with every word that slipped past his lips. The pedestal that kept her above the man made her seem much taller than she actually was. She paced the floor. It gave her a sense of superiority that she fought very hard to receive. Her status surpassed those of the people around her. She was older and wiser and perhaps slightly more sophisticated. Her moves were calculated yet often brutal because she learned that you get nothing in life if you’re not willing to spill a little blood, literally and figuratively. To have something or someone threaten her precious freedom like that was an obvious call for action
She halted her movements when he went quiet. “Do they have proof?” she questioned as if she expected him to tell her himself.
“No,” Talon said.
“Good. Call a meeting. I need to know who did this. And make sure no one knows beforehand. The last thing I need right now is a fucking vampire uproar.”
“What, you suspect it was one of us?” He had a doubting frown resting on his pale face.
“While I have faith that you can keep your fangs in your jaw, I need to make sure I’m not misplacing that faith,” she stated. “If I’m wrong in my suspicions, that is good for you. If I’m right and one of you idiots is behind this, I will drive you to hell myself.”
“If you want to have my opinion…”
She smirked, “I really don’t.”
“But if I may?”
“You may not.” Stepping down from the pedestal, she eyed him. “Call the meeting,” she ordered. “In the meantime, I’m going to get myself a bottle of Scotch to drown my sorrows, and then I’m going to steal from the police.”
Talon yelled after her, “Do you need any help, boss?”
“Yes. You can help yourself to stop crawling up my ass! That would help me a lot, actually. Don’t get me wrong,” she said, “I like my men submissive, but your behavior is just getting pathetic now. I’m your boss, not your mother. She’s dead. Deal with it.”
It wasn’t the first time she broke into the police station in Hell’s Kitchen. Crime rates exploded at night, which meant a higher police presence in the building, but at the same time, the cells overflowed with the many criminals they caught. They were always drowning in paperwork, and the crime never seemed to take an end.
She waited until the commotion in the bullpen caused the officer at the front desk to jump from his seat and escalate the situation. She sped toward the file cabinet, retrieved what she needed, and disappeared just as fast as she had come.
The officer looked up to find nothing but a strong breeze knocking the documents off his desk. He frowned, choosing to ignore it as the man underneath him writhed against the handcuffs.
Talon said a lot yet nothing at all. She eyed the pictures in the moonlight, the dead eyes staring straight into the security cameras, the man’s body covered in blood as he left a trail of bodies along the Hudson’s riverbed. He downplayed it. This was bad, a monster out of control, someone who shouldn’t even have existed in the first place and yet somehow came to life. There were clear rules. Those rules had been broken in more than one place, shattered on the ground, and then walked over with utmost disrespect.
And he wasn’t the only one. Every murder was accompanied by one of the herds escaping, later appearing on the scene of another crime. To the untrained eye, it appeared as if these kids were high and just playing around. The blood around the bodies was significant, so the ordinary human might sort it as an overdose after all. An accident. Though none of the things she saw were accidental.
They killed without a care, without remorse, and at the rate they were going, she was sure they wouldn’t stop anytime soon.
It wasn’t the first time she had to run against the clock, but it had been a while since she was tossed into such a situation where she had to choose between peace and her most primal nature. She had to appeal to her common sense. She knew better than to let them continue this.
Humans aren’t stupid but often underestimated. At this rate, if they kept going, war seemed inevitable.
These strangers were hunting on her turf and they turned everything upside down. She wasn’t having it. She had to do something.
The wind came from the far east and blew through the streets. Many different smells lay in the air that night, but the most prominent hit her nose at the front step of the precinct.
She tilted her head. She could sense him clearly now. He still smelled the same, his blood a bittersweet taste on her tongue, and she craved more. His heartbeat filled her ears, an elevated sound. She searched for him in the night until the sound of his scruffy, careful voice caught in her ears.
He stood on the fire escape of the precinct’s second floor. The metal creaked. A door fell shut. He wasn’t alone.
“Look, man, I’d be happy to help you, especially because we are way in over our heads with this case, but I told you,” the second voice said, “The file is gone.”
She stared down at the brown folder in her hands.
“What do you mean gone?” he asked, finally, and her eyes rolled back at the mere sound of him.
He was everywhere, so goddamn overwhelming, all she wanted was to pull him off that fire escape, into the alley, and turn him into a helpless mess until he was begging her for mercy with tears in his eyes – she could only imagine the soft color behind the red glasses. Were they brown, green, or perhaps even blue? They surely would turn black with lust and then gloss over with exhaustion from the sheer overstimulation when she was done with him. Though she would only stop when the color of his eyes would disappear behind his eyelids as he slipped into a state of unconsciousness, the pleasure causing his mortal body to shut down and submit even more to the power she wielded.
“Apparently, someone took it.”
“Since when do people steal files from a police station, Sergeant?”
The man shrugged. “It’s not the first time,” he said. “Happens more often than you might think.”
“What now?” her nameless stranger asked.
She could only imagine his mouth moving in sync with his gravelly voice, the movement of his Adam’s Apple in his throat as he swallowed, and the way his hands balled to fists at his sides, the beautiful veins protruding and his knuckles turning white. She wondered how those hands would feel somewhere other than a cane or a metal rod. How they would look tracing not the brim of glass but rather a different opening. Playing with wetness until his hands were coated in it the same way he played with the condensation on the glass of his drink.
“Sergeant, if you want me to help you, I need more than a whim to go on. Do you have anything you could give me?”
“Look, I can’t help you,” the Sergeant said, “but if I did know something, I would suggest scouting out the docks. Ground zero seems to be close to the docks, but I’ve also got word that the rest of Manhattan might be involved too, so I’d be careful if I were you.”
“Thank you.”
“Yeah, whatever. We have heightened police presence there since the first suspected overdose, consider that before you make any wrong moves.”
That stopped him. “Suspected?” he questioned.
He was a smart one. Her lip curled into a distant smirk.
“I’m not saying it’s not an overdose, I’m just saying they’re too suspicious to be instantly ruled as such. It’s my opinion, not the official statement, and everyone else here at the station and even the DA’s office agree with the drug epidemic explanation. But I’m not sure it’s right to assume that, not yet, not without evidence,” he said. “We judge people way too quickly these days.”
The stranger chuckled again, his voice darker than when she met him, but the darkness he displayed was something she thoroughly enjoyed. It was enticing, eliciting an excitement she hadn’t felt in quite a while.
“Are you talking about me?” he asked sheepishly, and she imagined him smirking. He seemed more confident in that alley, fully in his element, not at all as submissive as he had been around her.
She wondered if there were two sides to that man whose name she still hadn’t figured out.
The Sargeant scoffed, opening the door back into the precinct. Hot air met the cold one outside, causing the air to condensate. She could feel it even from a distance, the changes in temperature, the warmth that felt more wrong than it felt right.
“Just be careful,” he told him.
The fire escape squeaked and the sound of his boots disappearing into the distance had her frowning. Blind men don’t jump rooftops and they don’t do parkour. There was more to him than she first suspected. He wasn’t the innocent man he made himself out to be. He had dark secrets that went way below the surface. Her curiosity was spiked. She needed to see him again and she needed to have him now.
She held the file in the air, watching as the edges started to crinkle and the fire spread from her fingertips, infecting the paper. The folder lit up, filling the night with yellow flames and the ashes of the several documents gone with the wind.
When the paper fully dissolved, she closed her fist and the last remaining flame vanished.
As the mysterious stranger made his way over the rooftops of the city, she turned in the opposite direction. Her first instinct was to follow, but there was no fun in chasing him just yet. She wanted to play some before she did that and wanted him to know more about her before she completely destroyed and corrupted him. His beautiful soul would only remain a faint memory.
The doors into the old, abandoned church swung open. The benches were occupied with exactly five people, two of them Eli and Talon, and the rest of what she liked to call her family, but historians would have called them a coven. An assembled group of vampires qualified as such, as did more than one witch sharing the same ideologies and sharing the same living space. That’s what the two species have in common - they are both widely hated by all kinds of religions except for Satanity.
Six vampires living in a church sounds like the beginning of a bad joke, but the place had been abandoned years ago and there was no official owner, so it was run-down and, most importantly, they didn’t require an invitation to enter. So they made their home there, choosing Hell’s Kitchen as their turf and claiming it as their territory. That had been years ago and the small chapel grew significantly to feel like home since then.
“Cold-blooded murder,” she recited as she walked down the aisle, “Blood baths, two injection sites on the neck, suspicious behavior making humans thirsty for blood, and the police declared it a fucking drug epidemic!” she said. “What century are we living in, people? Is this the seventeenth or the eighteenth? Have we traveled back in time so that these words can be used in the same sentence again, right here in New York? What bad dream am I having right now, because it surely can’t be real?”
She reached the pedestal, stepping up in front of the altar.
“Seriously, what is happening?” she asked.
They all stared at her with wide, confused eyes. Those weren’t the faces of people who were about to cause a supernatural war of the undead. They were pretty much caught off guard by her accusations and that gave her hope, considering she knew them pretty well by now to know their tells when they were lying.
“Please tell me that it’s not one of you currently going on a rampage in Hell’s Kitchen, turning innocent teenagers into ruthless, blood-thirsty vampires, and breaking every rule that was set for us when it comes to hunting humans. Tell me none of you is going on a fucking murder spree!”
Her voice boomed off the high stone walls, almost cracking the colorful windows that adorned the church, pictures displaying passages of the bible and glowing bright red under the moonlight while others shone in blue and green. Though that night, red was truly prominent, and it fell right on her pale face, making everything appear dangerously dark about her.
One of the younger men raised his hand.
“William,” she called.
He stood up, clearing his throat, his hands tangled together in front of his body. He was the shy one, the one she had to pick up because he was starving himself due to his fear of what he had become after he was brutally turned by a woman he thought he could trust. It had been a very dark time back then, early twentieth century, and vampires in the States were still on the loose without a care in the world. There were no rules, only bloodshed, and the covens had body counts higher than the entire population.
“None of us is going on a murder spree,” he said.
“Are you saying that just because I want to hear you say it or do you actually mean what you just said?”
“I, um… you know what, I’m just gonna sit back down.”
“Wise choice.” She nodded. “So, William’s not a killer. What about the rest of you? Anyone trying to start a rebellion?”
Eli shrugged. His answer was obvious, “It’s not me.”
“I figured. You let your dinner stay for breakfast, and you know, you prefer blood whores. Gives you a sense of superiority, which of course, is not how this works. But anyway…”
The group burst out in laughter and Eli glared at her from across the room. “Very mature,” he said.
“I’m just giving you a taste of your own medicine,” she said. “Now, anyone else wanna share?”
Another hand rose in the air. “I’m honestly just knitting,” the woman said. As a demonstration, she lifted the half-finished scarf - they didn’t even wear scarves - and threw the ball of wool in the air. “I tried my hand at a very complicated cardigan, but that project failed, so I’m just going back to my roots.”
“Thank you, Helen, but I never doubted you, not even for a second. You’re a total sweetheart.”
“It also wasn’t me,” Talon spoke up. “But you already knew that.”
“Yes, because you are too stupid to cause such mayhem,” she stated plainly. “That leaves only one…” she let her eyes roam over the pews until she found who she was looking for.
His head hung low. Was he… sleeping?
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, for fuck’s sake! Can someone please punch Adam in the face?”
Eli stabbed him with his finger. The man shot up, causing the bench to creak. “I’m awake!” he declared.
“Thank you for gracing us with your presence,” she answered sourly. “Did you hear anything I just said?”
Adam looked around. All eyes were on him. He rubbed his very heavy eyes. “I zoned out after you said bloodbath.” At least his confession was honest.
She sighed. She was living with a bunch of idiots. She shouldn’t have suspected them. They weren’t capable of the monstrosities that she saw in the police file.
“Never mind,” she said in exasperation. “You’re all dismissed. Now please, fuck off. I need to be alone so I can fucking shoot myself.”
She wondered how they even managed to make it this far without getting caught.
“Talon.”
“Yes?” he replied.
“I need to get back out there. You’re in charge while I’m gone. Make sure that these idiots don’t kill themselves or each other.”
“Are you sure that is such a good idea? Going out there, I mean? We don’t know what we’re dealing with,” he said.
“No,” she stated after a slight moment of hesitation, “but I’m the only competent one in this house, so I have to step up.”
Her version of stepping up was simple. Scout the docks, stake out if necessary, and confront anything she deemed suspicious enough to risk getting caught. She hoped to run into one of the young vampires, at least, so she could make them answer her – the young ones were never bright, always controlled by hunger and the new intensity of their emotions. The anger was the most brutal one.
It’s like that even for humans – anger blinds, anger poisons, and anger can tear worlds apart and start new generations built on the same ideals. She witnessed anger and greed topple empires that had once been strong and flourished. There is no limit to what anger can make a person do. And vampires, like any other enhanced species, experience most emotions ten times deeper and worse than the ordinary human being.
She felt that effect even after years of being trapped in the same body, in the same state she was left in back then, and especially as she stood on the roof of the warehouse by the docks, overseeing the Hudson and the city that laid on the other side of the shore. She learned how to control and live with her anger. She learned how to survive. Though there were moments when even the highest form of self-control failed and she was stranded with the blade of a hot knife stuck in her sternum, digging further to tear apart her cold, dead heart.
The hunger was the worst part. It had the ability to cloud her mind completely and dictate her every behavior with the purpose to stave that hunger, which was a near-impossibility. There was no satisfying a hunger that had been there for centuries, that not even pints of blood could satisfy. In the years she lived, she learned how to live with it, but always going hungry was also no real way to live. It was awful, constant torture, and with every passing century, she grew more tired of the life she was forced to live.
In the distance, the wood creaked. One of the boats on the harbor displayed movements in its belly. The light only faintly fell on the source of the noise. A figure emerged behind the barrels stocked on the pier, heading straight for the oblivious fisherman who seemed to have stayed around to have a celebratory beer after bringing home quite a large catch of fish. She could smell them across the docks, already tied in bags to take home, but the victor was still inhabiting his boat. Humans have always been particularly obsessed with the art of fishing; it had once been their largest source of food income and fish is still pretty high up on the list of shippable goods. Though there was nothing worse to her nose than the smell of several fish perched together in one place. The stench was astronomical.
A young vampire was far more sensitive, though once hungry, there was nothing but blood on their minds and so none of them would run at the smallest hint of fish in the air, let alone the fear of getting caught. They didn’t have that kind of perception, not yet at least, because this particular behavior was taught. Primal nature dictated them to be monsters and without the proper training, the hunger would control them instead of them gaining control over the real monster – the insatiable thirst. Self-control is one of the hardest traits to gain, but it goes a long way, especially for creatures of the night who were born to be the opposite of compliant and self-aware.
If you want to live amongst an emancipated species, you have to learn how to conform to their rules and compromise, if necessary. You have to be willing to change your true nature to fit in and become something more than what history made of you. All of it comes back down to self-control. Without self-control, there can be no rules and without rules, society is doomed to collapse. Rules are what make a society habitable.
If there was one thing all young vampires had in common it was their lack of stealth. The young boy she had heard lurking behind the barrels across from the fisherman’s boat only checked the corner to his right, his eyes bright red as the moonlight fell on his blacked-out irises.
She cocked her head to the side. Someone trying to preserve themselves would have gone about this much differently. He stopped tip-toeing when he caught her scent in the air, slowly turning in her direction, and the way he looked straight at her reminded her of a frightened deer or a child caught in the act of stealing something. He was stealing, it just wasn’t something so easily explained. What he was stealing and risking went beyond what the human mind was capable of comprehending, let alone the brain of a young vampire that had absolutely no rational thoughts left behind.
He froze dead in his tracks and she sighed, almost like a condescending mother trying to teach her disobedient son a valuable lesson.
“I see what you’re doing,” she stated.
The boy licked his lips, revealing parts of his very sharp fangs. Another thing about the young ones – they didn’t know how to mask. One look at them and your first thought would be a vampire. Red eyes, protruding veins around the sockets, pale, clammy skin, and strength and speed they couldn’t control yet. Stealth was little to non existent, as was their sense of self-preservation and control. They were like unruly babies turning into toddlers overnight, the Devil on their shoulders whispering sweet sins into their ears and causing them to make the worst decisions. Right or wrong didn’t exist in their world. They knew what they wanted and they would try everything to get it, rules be damned.
Even though they all started out like this, not many chose to stay that way anymore. Once you learn how to live by the rules, it’s not that hard, and she grew to love the routine.
Without someone to teach them, young vampires could turn into everyone’s worst nightmare, and then everything she had worked so hard toward for centuries would have been for nothing.
“Fair warning,” she said, “Don’t.”
He bared his teeth.
“Oh, I’m shaking in my boots. Not. What’s your name, kid?”
He looked no day over seventeen, at best. His mother was probably worried sick. Little did she know that her worst fear, her son dying, had come true but in a far worse sense than she could ever imagine. Who he was now had nothing to do with the boy he used to be. The young vampire staring back into her eyes dark and empty had nothing left inside of him but insatiable hunger. His soul was clouded by the demon inside of him and chances were that it would never fully recover from the monstrosities he committed and would still commit.
She couldn’t stop him, she knew that. If she took him with her, whoever was responsible for the sudden spike in bloodless corpses would only create more of him, and take more teenagers from their parents until they got what they wanted. She needed to know what that was so she could stop the war that was looming on the horizon. She couldn’t have an apocalypse, not when her life was going semi-normal for a change. She quite liked New York, she wasn’t done yet.
“Who did this to you?” she asked again.
“Leave,” he growled.
“You see, I can’t do that. I want to, believe me, but I can’t. You’re too young, too inexperienced, so I’m trying to tell you this as easy as possible. What you’re doing right now is breaking all sorts of rules. You’re hunting on our turf,” she said. “My turf. My coven and I live here now. If you continue causing mayhem and destruction and turning innocent people into vampires, you’re breaking a truce that is far older than you, your parents, and great-great grandparents together. There is a set of rules for a reason…”
“You need to leave,” the boy repeated.
She ignored him. “This truce,” she continued, “was put in place over a century ago to assure that vampires and humans can live together in peace. Covens are not supposed to turn innocent people into vampires, let alone leave them without someone to teach them the ropes. A vampire out of control poses a danger to all species and if you continue what you’re doing, your actions will lead to war.” Her eyes narrowed. “Or perhaps that’s what you want. Is that it? Do you want us to be at war again?”
He smirked.
“You weren’t there the last time. It was ugly. That’s why there are rules, right?” She motioned as if explaining the way the world worked to a toddler. “To prevent such unnecessary bloodshed from happening again. To prevent us from killing each other,” she explained. “That’s what those rules are for, okay? Prevention, not causation. You’re supposed to stick to the rules to prevent a war that would destroy more than it would fix, and world domination doesn’t happen just because you say ‘fuck it!’ And shine a dangerous light on all vampires in the process. We’re not all alike. Every coven knows that,” she said. “Whoever made you is only using you to get ahead. In other words, you’re fucked and doomed to get slaughtered in the end. Either by your own kind, a war, or maybe even one of the very ancient vampire hunters that are only waiting for a chance to get back at us.”
Talking to him was futile. He didn’t follow a word she said and even if he had, he wouldn’t have understood. Young vampires were so stupid, naïve, useless and a nuisance. To think they all started out this way grossed her out, even though she made saving the lost causes of the world her life’s work.
Her logic was twisted and more often than not illogical, but she was wise and considered herself above average in intelligence, simply because she had been around for quite a while. She saw empires rise and fall. She stared into the darkest pits of existence and still managed to come back from the abyss. Her life had been a series of doors in her face, which led to several life lessons being taught over the course of centuries. She was no angel, but she wasn’t stupid and she had one job: make sure the truce would remain intact. And she would do just that, even if she had to eliminate that young boy in order to do so.
He didn’t say anything for quite a while. “Get out of my way,” he growled. Of course, he would settle on something as dramatically pathetic as this catchphrase. “I’m starving and I won’t hesitate to hurt you if you keep me from my meal.”
“Ouch,” she cocked an eyebrow, “You really bruise my ego, thinking you can get through me without getting hurt yourself. I’d suggest you think about your actions,” she said, “but I know that I’m practically talking to a wall right now, so thinking isn’t an option. You’re incapable of rational thought.”
Fear was the last thing that came to her mind when he showed off his teeth again.
“Listen, I just want to know who’s behind this. Who’s leading your coven, kid?”
“Fuck you!” he spat.
“Hey now, no need to get vulgar. I asked you a normal question. Who’s behind this and is there a chance I might get to have a conversation with the one in charge? Tell me and I will gladly point you in the direction of a different hunting ground,” she said.
The boy nodded toward the boat. “I want that one. He’s mine. Don’t even try to stop me.”
“Yeah, but you can’t have him.”
“I’m going to have him.”
“No, you won’t.”
“Stop disagreeing with everything I’m saying!”
She shrugged. “Can’t help that you’re wrong all the time. I’ve never learned how to shut up. It’s genetic; centuries of untreated trauma are at fault here, and of course, your general wrongness plays a big part in my need to disagree with your embarrassing hypotheticals.”
“Go to hell!”
“Already did. You know, of course, pride always goes before the fall. Such a human trait to have; multiply it by a thousand, where does that leave you? Certainly not more sophisticated than me, someone with hundreds of years of experience. You need to be careful, young vampires like you are at an even higher risk to be discovered and murdered before you even get the chance to learn what you were given with this transition.”
Finally, he launched at her. She sped away, gone in a matter of a second, and appeared a few feet behind him, heaving a heavy sigh. “You kids are all the same,” she declared, looking into his very distraught eyes. He couldn’t believe she had switched that fast. “Fast but reckless and extremely easy to trick.”
A moment later, he stood in her spot and she was gone again, crossing her arms behind her back.
“You done?” she asked. His attempts to attack her only made her laugh, “Oh, so terrifying.”
She had him right where she wanted him, so agitated that he spiraled out of control, no longer aware of where he was going or what he was doing. She watched him dance for a bit. By now, he surely must have realized he wasn’t going to win. But the pride was stronger and he kept going, trying to get to her in all kinds of ways, though never succeeding.
“I feel bad for you. What would your mother say if she saw you like this?”
He stopped. His left eye twitched. She saw the wheels on his head turning and she thought, finally, I got him.
What did she say? Pride goes before the fall.
She caught the billy club that soared through the air in their direction only a few inches from the boy’s face. Her lips pursed and she stared at the red object, feeling the heavy metal between her fingers and the small ripples in the material.
When she turned her attention back to the target, the boy was gone. He had sped away, using the moment of distraction to run. She couldn’t sense him anywhere; he must have escaped the docks completely, not even staying close to the Hudson. He was on his way home. The fisherman was safe and she had diverted quite the disaster, but she still deemed the interruption rude, including the attempt to impale that poor boy with the billy club. She had thought about it, but she would have never gone through with it. Whoever the weapon belonged to had to have been close by.
Her night just kept getting better and better. That was her assessment, at least, until she heard his heartbeat again. The scent of him brushed the hairs in her nose and she took a whiff, feeling his presence so close in the air, she stopped to let the sensation wash over her. The fire inside of her belly ignited once again, the excitement tickling her cold skin and leaving nothing but lust and hunger to rummage through her veins.
Footsteps thudded against the asphalt, stones crunching under his weight. They were slightly wet from the previous rain, causing a slight slip.
She lowered her hand with the billy club, turning to look over her shoulder at the supposed blind man in a suit. She had seen that get-up before in the papers when he first showed his masked face in Hell’s Kitchen. She never thought much of it since he had never posed a problem before.
The tables had officially turned.
Her lips parted to chuckle. “This is awkward,” she said. In the distance, the waves of the Hudson crashed into the riverbanks. It was colder than usual with a breeze in her hair that caused the water to go wild.
She fiddled with the red billy club, smirking, “Does this belong to you?”
“Who are you?” his voice sounded significantly lower than the night she first met him at that godforsaken gala.
To think she didn’t want to go in the first place; she would have never met him if she hadn’t let Talon convince her that she was supposed to show her face. A political move, he called it, to assert her dominance, which she did, but not in the areas that mattered.
“What are you doing in my city?”
She pouted. “So many questions.”
“Who was that boy you were just talking to? Where did he go?”
“What happened to hello, how are you? What’s your name?” She retorted. “Take a girl out for a drink first, would you? Back then men used to still be gentlemen.”
His chuckle was rather dark, a sound that made her shiver and imagine what it would sound like to reduce him to whimpers instead. The man was a brat, no doubt, not easy to force into submission, but she had cracked worse nuts. Surrendering wasn’t her forte, but she could make it everyone else’s.
“I’m not here to play games,” he told her.
“But I am,” she said.
“What do you want?”
“As far as I can recall, I made that pretty clear when we first met.”
“When we- I don’t know you,” he lied and she realized how bad he was at it for a lawyer.
She licked her lips, the fangs threatening to come out. She was starving. “I quite like an oblivious man. Makes things so much more exciting.”
“Listen, I don’t have time for small talk. There have been several suspicious murders around this part of New York and you’re currently my only connection, so you better talk before I make you.”
“Just out of curiosity,” she said, “what does making me entail?”
“Oh, for fuck’s sake!”
He headed straight ahead, determined to grab her, and she watched with an amused crinkle in her eyes. The downward tilt of his lips was truly something to laugh over.
She allowed him to push her against the wall behind them. His force was surprising – those arms didn’t just look scrumptious, they actually carried a lot of strength for a human.
The stranger bared his teeth and she smirked, eyeing his focused expression. He tried to look intimidating but failed miserably. One of his hands braced against the cement beside her head and the other landed around her neck, a threatening motion to assert dominance. They were all so predictable and foolish enough to think that a woman like her couldn’t fight back.
Everywhere she went, she was underestimated. If only everyone knew her true nature, they wouldn’t be so reckless as to push her into corners over and over again. Or in this case, against cement walls on the docks in the middle of the night, right in the middle of her hunting ground with not another human soul close enough to hear him scream. And water is knowingly a great way to dispose of a dead body.
He squeezed tighter and she unclenched her jaw, wriggling out of his grasp in the process. “You’re a kinky bastard, aren’t you?” she asked.
“Answer my question,” he bit back.
“If you answer mine first.”
“This isn’t a game. Lives are at stake here! Listen, I don’t know who you are or what you are,” he said, “but if I find out that you had anything to do with these innocent kids getting slaughtered or know something about this new drug everyone is talking about, I will find you and I will destroy you.”
“You know, if it weren’t for the way you smell, I wouldn’t have recognized you, all confident in your little devil’s costume,” she purred.
Her finger slid up the leather of his suit, brushing over his tensing abs hiding behind the protective gear and she sucked in a sharp breath at the illusion she received.
“All of this tension and I still don’t know your name.”
He caught her hand and pinned it over her head. She squealed. He was full of surprises, and it only turned her on more. She wanted to bite him, really bite him, and suck on his pulse until he was crying her name and praying for God to save him, but the pleasure would only drive him further to hell and God wouldn’t be coming. She wanted him to writhe under her touch, taste him and make him come undone over and over again and once he believed she was done with him, she would start her torture anew, right from the beginning, pushing him from the precipice just far enough so she could catch him, bring him back to the top and then do the same thing in repetition all over again.
He roamed her face aimlessly, as it seemed, but barely visible behind the mask. “How?” he growled.
“Wouldn’t you want to know?” She chuckled. “It’s unfortunate that we had to meet again like this, but…” In an instant, she had them flipped around, her arms pinning him to the wall instead of herself and her strength remained unmatched. He could struggle, it was of no use. She had the upper hand.
Her breath tickled his ear as she spoke, far too close for comfort, “You smell absolutely divine. It’d be a shame to waste all that sweet, sweet blood for a second time,” she said.
He couldn’t move. Sharp nails raked through his hair and over his scalp, tugging his head to the side until his throat was completely bare to her, naked, exposed. His aorta pulsated wildly under his skin. She could see it bulge with every beat of his heart. That strong, masculine heart, stronger than anything she had heard or felt before.
She tasted the sweat on his skin and the salt of threatening tears in the air. If he was turned on or scared, she wasn’t sure. The lines between fear, pain, and pleasure blurred. It was all the same to her, anyway. Getting close to her would most certainly draw everyone under her spell at some point, no matter the sex or gender, and all the heads would continue turning to her whenever her presence entered a room full of lively human beings. Only then her pheromones could work their wonders.
The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen struggled against her grasp but to no avail. He was powerless, just how she liked him, how she wanted and craved him.
She licked a long stripe over his pulse point. “I want to taste you so badly,” she whispered. “I want nothing more than to dig my teeth into your pretty little throat and suck you dry, and then I want to get on my knees and eat your cum so I can feel it mix with the essence of what your heart has to give, and then you’d be mine. I’d own you. You’d be completely at my mercy, you’d be bound to me and it would feel so fucking good. It would feel so fucking good for the both of us.”
Her fangs began to scratch the surface, enough to make him feel it but not nearly enough to break the skin. She tasted the salt of his sweat even clearer now, wondering how much deeper she had to go to finally reach the source of the sweetness that surrounded him.
“Don’t you want that?” Her hand joined the words slipping from her silver tongue and wrapping around him like a poisonous snake. “Don’t you want to let me corrupt you, to bite you, to eat you until all you can feel is the pure pleasure of having me all over you? My lips, my tongue, my teeth, my body on yours everywhere, all the fucking time… oh, that would be such an orgasmic sight, and the pleasure you’d be feeling, I can’t even describe it. You won’t know until you at least try and believe me, you should. Isn’t that something you want, darling? Doesn’t your body crave to be caressed and receive undivided attention from someone who knows how to make you feel good?”
He sounded small, fragile, and utterly broken when he next spoke, and she hadn’t even started yet. “What are you doing to me?” he asked. The heat of his breath mixed with the cold night air. “What are you?”
She chuckled. “The better question is, what am I not?” The tip of her tongue moved from his neck to his cheek until she reached the corner of his luscious lips. Her nose dug into his cheekbone. “Fuck,” she said. “The things I want to do to you are far from innocent.”
But so fucking good.
Even with fear holding the reins to his body, he melted into her touch. He turned into a puddle of melted chocolate right at her feet. She could have asked anything of him, he would have done so just for the sake of pleasing her. But she wanted him to do it voluntarily not because the smell of her pheromones managed to drive any man into a state of co-dependency.
She wanted him to want her for the sake of wanting her. Like this, she would only compel him to do things he would never choose to do out of his own free will, and while the thought of having him right there on the docks was exciting and had her cunt squeezing around thin air, already wet and wanting, the only treacherous thing about her that was entirely defenseless and could be forced into submission with just a simple flick of the tongue over plump, rosy lips. He had her on the cloud of dangerous euphoria in seconds, already stumbling on the edge and about ready to slip, lose herself, and lose control only to have him, finally, in all the ways she pleased and all the ways that would make him feel good.
She could give him anything he had ever wanted, give him a time that not a single human could give him, and make him come undone inside and outside so many times, he would pass out from the pure pleasure. But he wouldn’t regret it. He would go out this as the winner, fucked out and blissful and perhaps a little addicted to the taste of her as well – she was sure she would be addicted to him as well. She almost already was, just from the scent of his blood and the way his body shivered at the slightest touch. He was so responsive, so human, yet stronger and more unique than anyone else could ever be. He was the one thing she wanted and she was ready to take it as soon as he wanted it, too.
She was used to taking what she wanted however she wanted and screwing the consequences, quite literally, but not with him. With him, the need bubbling up deep inside of her belly was different. It wasn’t just a hunger for blood or a hunger for sex and pleasurable violence, he caused much more than that within her already conflicted soul, and as enticing as that was, the connection confused her. There was a reason she didn’t let anyone close, using sex as a mere pastime activity to get the edge off – she couldn’t toy with him because chances were she would reduce his survival chances to zero.
Allowing a human like him close would only cause pain in the long run, and she’d been through enough of that for several lifetimes. And that wasn’t even an overstatement.
Her lips brushed over his momentarily before she forced herself to pull away, widening the distance between them.
The poor man slumped against the wall, his world rotating. He took it much better than most people, but the sweet taste of his fear in the air reminded her that he was just human, after all. A curious, enticing, and mysterious human, but a human being nonetheless.
Humans serve only one purpose for vampires like animals serve a purpose to humans – predators hunt their victims to feast, sustain themselves and survive. Humans are essentially animals and vampires used to be humans turned into hunters, predators, and dangerous perverts who craved blood to survive while at the same time using it for twisted, sexual purposes that had God locking the gates of heaven to anyone who even dared to fantasize about it. There is no ancestor ready to turn around in their grave because vampires were born from lust and hunger, and the first vampires had been carnal creatures as well, ready to go at it like animals without a single brain cell at their disposal.
Vampires weren’t like that anymore. Sex still played a huge role in their existence, but their main purpose was to fit in. They wanted a peaceful life. Taking everything they wanted was no longer possible, their chances were limited, but at least they didn’t have to fear imminent death anymore. Not ever since the truce was first established, anyway.
If those young vampires continued killing and turning innocent children without mercy, and their coven even supported their decisions, the peace would have been short-lived. She could already see it swindling with every passing second, though fear was not something she wanted to concern herself with, not yet. Her life had more important things to offer before she rang the warning bells on all the vampires she knew, therefore causing a certain commotion that would send the gravestones rolling. Not yet, she decided, but if they kept going at this rate, certainly very soon.
“Go,” she growled into the night. “Do yourself a favor and stay away from the Hudson until further notice. You can never know what blood-thirsty and murderous monsters might lurk in the dark around here,” she said.
He didn’t move.
“Did you hear what I said?”
“You don’t get to tell me what to do,” he said, his voice remaining steady.
She frowned. “Are you serious?”
“Yeah, you don’t scare me. Manipulate me all you want, this isn’t the first time an otherwise scary woman fails to put me under her spell. But,” he smirked, “don’t take it personally. I’m sure you look pretty scary.”
“Oh, sweetheart,” she cooed, her eyes switching from their natural color to a glossy black. “You have no idea who you’re talking to, do you?”
The red nails adorning her fingers grew sharper and in size. If only he could have regained his eyesight, he surely would have changed his mind. Her skin turned even whiter, the bags under her eyes sinking deep into her skull, replaced instead by thick, purple veins that transported the venom from the core of her existence into them. She was chaos, an abomination, humanity’s biggest threat – not scary was a description she wouldn’t accept.
No matter how blind he was, he had to follow the natural order of things like everyone else. He was supposed to be afraid of her. If he couldn’t find it in himself to show her, all of her games would inevitably lose their fun factor. And her ego would suffer the most.
Open an ancient book about demons and a picture like that might stare back at you.
“It takes a lot more than dark magic to scare the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen,” he told her.
It was cute. Remarkable, really. She laughed at his attempt to make himself feel better, and partly because she was starting to grow upset with him.
“Somehow, being infuriated with you only makes you so much more attractive to me,” she said.
“You still don’t scare me.”
“Enjoy it while it lasts.”
Five seconds. The heartbeat of the fisherman rang loudly in her ear. She was starving, her last meal far too long in the past. He wriggled in her grasp, crying, begging for her to let him go, to have mercy on him and, “Oh, God, your face- what happened to your face? Are those- are those fangs? Please, I have a family!”
Her laugh reverberated in her chest. The man stiffened when she tore at his hair to position his head sideways, his neck in perfect reach for her mouth. She looked at the man in the suit before her, his jaw clenched, and he had his billy clubs at the ready. They weren't going to hurt her, he knew that. She would catch them with ease. He could only stand by and pretend he wasn’t scared even though he had never been more in sync with the feeling. They were a package deal when it came to her.
“Don’t worry,” she told the poor fisherman, “You’ll see your family again, and you won’t even have to remember a thing.”
Her mouth opened.
“Don’t,” Daredevil threatened – yes, it was a threat, not even a warning – from the other side of her, and she saw the conflict dance clearly over the revealed lower part of his face. “You don’t have to hurt him,” he said. “The man’s innocent.”
She shrugged. “I know.”
“He has a family.”
“I know. My ears are quite impeccable, can you believe that?”
“How about you think this through before you act? There’s a lot of ways you can go about spiting me, but pulling an innocent bystander into this is not fair. Come on, you said you wanted me, so take me.”
As lucrative as that sounded, she had a different plan.
She hummed, “No.”
“Why? Are you scared? Perhaps you’re not such a bad person after all. Is that it? You want me to be afraid of you, so you’re trying to hurt that man until I cave? Well, I won’t, but Im offering myself to you instead of him, so don’t try so hard. Just take me. Take your shot.”
Oh, he sounded so amused – time to wipe that smirk off his beautiful face.
“Ancient advice,” she ignored everything else he had said, “Don’t be a martyr,” she said and her lips rained down on the fisherman’s throat in a fiery passion. “History hates martyrs.”
“No, history only consists of martyrs.”
“The official version. The truth lies much deeper than your little human brain could ever explore.”
Daredevil was right about one thing; the man was innocent. No matter how she turned it, there was nothing wrong with him, so death would have been unnecessary punishment.
She wasn’t going to kill him just to spite the man she craved to actually have a taste of. She was just going to take a sip, still a quarter of her hunger and then move on, heal the man’s wounds and make him forget this ever happened. He would be disoriented, but he would be fine.
Humans are the most susceptible to manipulation.
“Don’t be afraid,” she told the fisherman, “I’m just going to have a little taste of the forbidden fruit.”
Her teeth dug into his aorta and she sucked, tasting the blood that squirted into her mouth and all over her face in thick stripes. He tasted nothing like the feast standing right across from her, but it didn’t matter. Her mind shut off. The hunger moved to the forefront and at that moment, everything else stopped existing. It was just her and the life of this particular human in her hands, the taste of his blood exploding on her tongue and her stomach churning with the endless hunger that only got fueled with the small taste. She wanted more, needed it, but she knew better than to let the desperation overpower her.
Passed out and short of a few pints of blood, the fisherman fell to the ground. She licked her lips. He was everywhere, even stuck on her clothes and traces of him had gotten tangled in her hair. He was a bleeder, that much was sure, and if she hadn’t licked over his neck to seal the wound, he surely would have bled out.
Poor thing, but sentiment was useless in a case like this. He would make it. No use crying over a blood bag, she was taught. Humans lived to feed them. It was their purpose and she had no reason to feel bad for wanting to be full for a change, not go to bed hungry because she wouldn’t dare touch someone that wasn’t already in a plastic bag. She deserved this.
And Daredevil cowered in fear at the sounds he was met with. Her night had turned from a total shit show into the sight of victory.
She stepped forward and he flinched away, finally. “You wanted to know what I am. This is it!” she declared. “I’m the monster parents warn their children about and I’m the one thing every church fears because I happen to stand against everything religion stands for.”
“Dear God,” he breathed out.
“God can’t help me now,” she said. Her eyes moved to the sky, watching the stars disappear behind a thick cloud of smog and thousands of lights from the city center. “He stopped doing that the second I died. He’s dead to me now. He cannot be found. There is no God, there is only hunger and I’m probably the most merciful of them all, so I’d run if I were you. I’d run before another one of those demons God gave up on saving, jumps out of the dark and decides to suck the life from your pretty little body. I’d run,” she said, “because there is not a millisecond that goes by in which I do not want to tear your neck open and drink your blood while I also desperately want to suck your dick between my lips and do the same to those veins too, and the longer you stay the more my self-control starts to fade into the thin smoke that comes out of your mouth whenever you speak.”
He shivered and the color faded from his skin, blood pooling in his veins at twice the amount and the smell almost knocked her off her already hazy feet from the first course.
More, her body screamed, but she held back. She learned how to hold back. No one had to die tonight.
“Run now or I’m cutting this short, and then Hell’s Kitchen will no longer have a Daredevil to protect them from the likes of me. They won’t even get the chance to mourn because it’d be impossible for me to drop your body in the Hudson after getting a taste of your blood.”
He turned around, finally getting the hint to run. He jumped the wall up to the rooftop too gracefully for a blind man. She watched, her bloody lips moving into a smile.
“Fear is healthy,” he heard her loud and clear. “Don’t let your pride cloud that healthy feeling from manifesting. And find me,” she said, “when you’re ready to talk without underestimating me.”
By the time she looked back up, Daredevil was gone with the wind, but his scent still lingered long after he had left and she would take it to bed with her where the most unholy of things would happen to the sound of a name she didn’t even know.
She should have fucked him when she had the chance.

Mama’s Garden
Tumblr media
It’s your birthday and your daughter wants to celebrate. Her father can do nothing but oblige.
A/N: My submission for Levi Month Day 21; Post-War: Children. ~1.3k words of pure angst.

“Papa, do you think mama would like this?”
A single pebble. A shiny one at that. Levi gave it an expressionless glance and gave a firm nod.
“Mama would like anything you give her, Eden.”
Hardened eyes met soft bright ones, ones that broke out in innocent glee, ones that made Levi Ackerman’s heart swell. There was only one other person who had this effect on him.
You.
The little girl chucked the pebble into a worn pouch, along with other things she wanted to give you. It was your birthday today and Levi had been up early—partly by his own choice, the other because of the giddy toddler who had been preparing for this day for weeks. It had been hard to put Eden down to bed yesterday and the bags under Levi’s eyes were a testament to that.
The day was sunny and so Levi moved forward with his child’s plans, a picnic for mama. Stowed inside a basket were fruit—the ones you and Eden liked—some sandwiches she helped him make, and leftover stew from yesterday’s meal.
“Mama doesn’t like stew,” Eden huffed, wrinkling her nose.
“Mama doesn’t like it, or you don’t like it?”
Eden gave it a seemingly deep thought.
“Neither of us.”
Dinner time had been a struggle yesterday, too. She turned out to be as picky of an eater as her father.
It was less of a struggle now though, compared to a couple of years ago.
Right. Eden was almost five. How quickly the time has passed.
Time, Levi reflected with a pang, time that he wished he had more of.
“Papa,” a little girl with his features, but your eyes, called to him, “let’s pick flowers for mama.” He nodded before his thoughts could ensnare him again.
“This red one, and this blue one, and this pink one…”
It amazed Levi how much she’s grown. She used to be so small, would fit right into his hands like a dainty little package. Now, she counted to ten and back, knew colors, helped him water your garden. She already knew so many things—Levi sometimes found it hard to keep up.
“Mama, you’re going to like my bucket, I promise,” Eden whispered into one of the bell-shaped flowers, a habit she had ever since Levi had told her that you’d hear her if she spoke into them.
“It’s bouquet, Eden,” he corrected her gently and turning to head back to the house when she stopped him.
“Won’t we water the flowers today?”
Levi paused, a twinge of guilt tightening in his chest. So Eden has noticed; Levi has tried not to let the approaching date affect him, but your garden hasn’t been tended to in a week now. The weeds were beginning to creep in, some flowers were wilted and some of the bush was growing wildly in some places.
“Yeah,” he finally answers, his voice softening, “go get the watering can.”
Eden giggled with delight, small shoes pattering around the corner as Levi watched her disappear momentarily. The minutes felt long; a familiar worry settled in his bones, a worry he couldn’t quite shake when his daughter was out of sight.
Levi let out a breath he didn’t realize he’d been holding when Eden finally reappeared. Watering can in tow, they watered the garden together. Levi’s brows were furrowed in concentration, trying not to overwater like you’ve taught him before.
I’ll tend to this later, Levi silently promised as they left the small garden and headed back into the house. He watched as Eden said her goodbyes to each and every flower, exerting patience where there once was none.
With the small basket in tow and a giggling Eden following closely behind, Levi began the familiar trek to the fields to see you.
“Papa, how come you married mama?”
Your toddler exhibited such curiosity that could drive Levi mad at times, but nonetheless he ensured to give her the information she wanted.
“I loved your mama, so I married her.”
Words like love still felt foreign in the former captain’s mouth. Yet, with time, it was getting just a little easier to speak of it—to speak of you.
“So people marry for love?”
Not always.
Very rarely.
“Of course,” he answered, voice steady.
Soon, the cobblestone paths diverted into dirt walkways. The small patch of flowers that had been growing from the cracks of the stone brick now flowed wildly in this section of the road.
Past the willow tree and into the flower fields, alone and by a motionless lake, you were there.
This is where Levi let love in—where he let you in. This is where Levi proposed.
This is where you rested.
“Mama, happy birthday!” Eden exclaimed, her voice ringing out in the quiet air. She took a seat next to the familiar gravestone, pouch already open as she emptied out its contents on the patch of grass she sat on.
Levi watched her for a moment, the weight of the day finally pressing heavily on his heart. Finally, he set the basket down, hand brushing light over the cool stone.
“Here’s this pebble I found today. You can have it, I already have one like it in my room…”
Levi could feel his throat closing up as Eden continued speaking, explaining every single gift she’s brought and what it meant. The pebble, a pink bow she’d begged Levi to buy (a bow he thought was for her), a drawing of a big house and a family of three.
A family of three, Levi wished his family of two could be a family of three. So many nights he spent hoping you were alive somewhere, not just in his mind—those quiet hours when the house felt too empty, and the silence too heavy.
Emotion was getting harder to combat with age, but Levi tried with all his might to refrain from crying. No, today his daughter deserved a moment of happiness, even if you being gone was killing him inside. Even if being here was killing him inside.
But Levi couldn’t stop the tears even if he wanted to.
“Is papa crying?”
He quickly wiped them away with his sleeve.
“No, it’s water.”
“…There was water in papa’s eyes yesterday, too.”
Eden was just like you, always so annoyingly observant. Levi could feel his heart twist at her words.
The flowers swayed peacefully in this part of the field, their soft colors blending with the golden light of the afternoon. The wind blew against Levi’s hair, tickling his face as he watched Eden run and play. A small smile etched itself on his scarred face in this fleeting moment of calm.
When Eden finally tired, she helped her papa clean up and put everything back in the basket. The gifts would stay, except the drawing. Levi had to find a way to secretly take it back home.
“Can we come back soon,” Eden asked, a hint of sadness finally making its way through.
Levi gave a firm nod. “Of course.”
There was a silent pause, a moment of deliberation for the young girl.
“Papa, how come mama can’t be with us?”
She died at childbirth.
“She’s busy,” was Levi’s gruff response, before letting out a heavy sigh. “Mama’s taking care of us…from the sky.” Levi was weary of religion, but if it meant he could spare even a shred of innocence for his daughter for the time being, he’s taking it, no questions asked.
“Mama’s an angel?”
A silent pause.
“Yeah, sure kid.”
She grinned, curiosity quelled for a short minute, before another thought burst through her tiny mind.
“Will you also be an angel one day?”
Levi could feel his heart stop. He hoped so, if it meant he could see you one day. He missed you so much—he missed your smile, your laugh, your playful kisses despite his half-hearted protests. For a brief moment, he allowed himself the comfort of an afterlife with you.
“Yeah, one day,” he finally managed to say, his voice almost breaking.
Eden smiled, her small face lighting up with an innocence that tugged at Levi’s heart.
“Papa, I love you,” Eden says so suddenly, “Mama loves you, too.”
Levi’s breath hitches, a warmth spreading through his chest. His eyes soften, he breaks into a rare, tender smile, one that hadn’t come easily for years.
“I love the both of you, too.”

For those who have read "Levi's Horrible Flirting Skills," allow me to introduce you to a new term.
You see, I’m from Argentina, and we girls have a term we like to use called puti-vuelta, which could be translated as "slutty turn" or "whore-turn." Just as the word "bitch" in English and other similar terms were once used to denigrate women, and later reclaimed by the group as a form of empowerment, puti-vuelta follows a similar pattern. The term includes the word puta, which refers to a "slut" or "whore."
Why bring up this term? Because I HAVE done the puti-vuelta, and most of my single friends do it as well. But what exactly is a puti-vuelta? Well, it’s basically when you’re out clubbing or partying with your friends (USUALLY female), and all of you hold hands to avoid getting separated in the crowded place. You then "walk around" the venue, perhaps pretending to go to the bathroom or grab more drinks. Sometimes, you might genuinely be headed to the bathroom, but you take a few extra turns along the way. Why? Because this is the time when you catch a glimpse of any interesting fella who’s also at the venue. If you lock eyes with someone, maybe he’ll come over in a few minutes, tap your shoulder, and ask if he can buy you a drink, dance, or step outside for some fresh air.
Basically, it’s a way of walking around a club with your friends and signaling, "Hey, I’m single and might be up for a drink if you ask nicely." It’s also a chance for all the girls to scout out potential guys without being alone, with the added protection of being with friends.
Now, I’m explaining this because, in my mind, Y/N from "Levi's Horrible Flirting Skills" was doing a puti-vuelta with her friends at the party when she spotted Erwin and decided to go over and say "hi," maybe hoping he’d introduce her to someone interesting. That someone turned out to be Levi, as we see in part 1.
Also, it’s common among my friends that if one of us decides to approach a guy during a puti-vuelta, the rest of us will check in after a few minutes to make sure the guy is behaving or to see if she needs help. That’s why Y/N’s friends popped up again after she had been talking to Erwin for a little while.
That’s it! I hope you enjoyed today’s lesson in Argentine girly pop culture. Haha!

Part 7
Tumblr media
“God, you are so fucking beautiful.”
You squeaked when Levi’s hand touched the inside of your thigh close to your heat. “Levi.”
The two of you were in the back of a car on your way to a gathering. This gathering was important and involved a lot of gang leaders, political figures, and those with a lot of power in one room. It was a fancy occasion that required black tie attire. Levi had spoiled you so you were in a very glamourous dress that fitted you so beautifully, it showed off all your curves and your wonderful bust. He even bought you a fantastic bra that worked with the dress.
He leaned over and latched onto the top of your breast. “Delicious.”
You slapped your hand on Levi’s. “No fooling around. We have to go to this gathering.”
He pulled back and licked his mark. “You’re just so beautiful.”
You cupped his face and lifted his head. “Levi? I love you.”
He smiled softly as he said your name. “I love you, always.” He glanced to the door and huffed. “We’ve arrived. I’ll get the door.” He slipped out first before leaning in and offering his hand to you. “Come on, my lovely bunny.”
You took his hand and walked with him out onto the red carpet. “I didn’t expect paparazzi.”
“It’s a strange world I live in.” He pulled you closer. “I hope that doesn’t bother you.”
You shook your head. “No, not at all. I get to show off that you’re my man.” You kissed him and hummed. “All mine.”
Levi yanked you close and kissed you passionately causing cameras to flash. “You’re mine.”
You giggled. “I can’t wait to be Mrs Ackerman.”
“You want my last name?”
You walked up the steps with him. “I’d love to have it. I think it suits me.”
He kissed your neck. “It does.”
You gasped when you entered the main room, it was a beautiful sight to behold. The whole room was almost like a grand 1920s casino. The lighting was soft and cosy in a comforting way. Most surfaces were mahogany with a lot of red fabrics. People were gambling and raising money for charity. It seemed laughable that a hall full of rich people was raising money so they could fuel their egos.
Levi huffed. “Seems so stupid.”
You rubbed Levi’s chest. “I was thinking the same thing.” You kissed his cheek. “But we should have fun and you have work to do. So, let’s have fun.”
Levi chuckled. “Yeah, let’s have some fun.”
You squeaked in delight. “I didn’t know our friends would be here!” You bounced up and down. “Can I go see them?”
He leaned closer and kissed you. “Not yet. I need to borrow them for work.” He smiled when you pouted hard. “Don’t worry, I won’t leave you alone. I will give you some money and one friend.”
Shuji slid up next to you and grinned. “Hello, bunny.” He eyed you. “You look incredible.” He winked at Levi. “You picked one of the dresses I suggested.”
You looked over at Levi and smiled. “You made a friend.”
Levi pinched your cheek. “Shuji has incredible taste in clothes. He does own a lot of clothing places. It made sense to me.”
“Well, you both chose well.”
Levi kissed you. “I’m off. Stay close to Shuji, okay?”
You smiled. “Promise.”
Shuji put his hands in his pockets and watched Levi leave. “Mm. He’s deeply in love. I would say it’s insanity levels.” He looked down at you. “Can you handle that?”
You giggled and hugged Shuji’s arm. “Oh, I can’t handle him alright.”
Shuji smirked. “You are a mystery.”
“I aim to mystify.”
He laughed as he shook his head. “I am still a bit annoyed and upset that I didn’t meet you when you were single.”
You patted him on the back. “I don’t think you ever had a chance with me.”
“Why do you say that?”
You walked with him to a nice spot at the side of the room. “Well, I met Levi when I was very little.”
“Ah.” He smiled and nodded. “You were destined to be together. Fated lovers.”
“You could say so.”
He bumped into you. “It’s true.” He sighed. “You want a drink?”
“I’d love one.”
“I’m sure Levi won’t mind if I leave you for a little bit, right?”
You reached over and pinched his cheek. “You’re so cute.”
He placed his hand against yours causing you to flatten your hand against his cheek. He smiled and leaned into your touch. “You’re the only one who can do this to me.” He closed his eyes a moment before gazing at you. “The only one who can tease me.”
You smiled sweetly at him making his heart melt. “It’s cause we’re friends, right?”
He turned his head and kissed your hand. “Great friends.” He let you go. “I’ll be quick.”
“Okay.” As soon as you released him, he walked right to the bar near you. Your eyes scanned the room as you tried looking for Levi, but he was nowhere to be seen. You assumed that he’d gone to a private room to have a meeting. “Hmm.”
“Finally, you’re alone.” A slender woman in a tight dress and thick brunette hair approached you. “I’ve been waiting for you to be alone.”
You looked around you then back at her. “Me?”
She hummed a laugh and played with your glass. “Well, I am staring at you.” She turned to her friend. “I guess that explains it. She’s a dumb whore.”
You let out a long sigh. “I get it now. I’m the new girl so you’re trying to put me in my place, right? So which old fart’s cock you riding so you can afford that diamond necklace?”
She gasped in horror while her friend sniggered a bit. “Excuse you! I’m with the most powerful man in this city.” She emphasised the word most to make an impact, but it didn’t. “You’re just some silly girl playing a mafia romance game.”
You yawned and hummed. “Mm, I’m so sorry I fell asleep while you were talking. What are you on about?”
She walked up to you and poked your chest. “You parade around in a dress with a bite on your tit, it’s trashy.”
“Shuji and Levi picked this dress for me. The bite is from Levi because, you know, we’re a couple and getting married.” You smiled. “Does your husband not give you lovebites?”
She narrowed her eyes at you. “I know what type of girl you are. You’re one of those girls who declares she’s not like the others. You think you’re special.”
You laughed. “Really? Wow. No, you have me wrong. I am just like every other girl. I enjoy sleep and food. I work hard to get my makeup and hair right, but it doesn’t always work. I work hard and enjoy movies and video games. I like lying around in a comfy apartment. I also really love having wild and animalistic sex with my fiancé. There are so many girls that are just like me and I’m like them. No one is unique or different. I’m here because Levi loves me. Levi has loved me since we were kids and I fucking love that man so much that if you tried to take him from me, I will find a way to reverse every single Botox injection you have had.”
She reached up and touched her face as terror filled her. You.” She growled. “You’re just a dumb whore. I mean you say you love Levi, but you have Mr Sando, Mr Lionheart, Mr Shinohara, Mr Smith and Mr Zacharias wrapped around your finger. I bet you’re fucking them all.”
“Oh yeah, massive orgy. Cocks and cum everywhere.”
“You!”
You laughed. “You assume I’m a whore because I have friends, male friends, who I got by being nice. Shino and Lucas are my friends because Levi asked them to be my bodyguards, but then we got to know each other and became friends. Erwin and Mike are always around Levi and soon became my friends. I haven’t fucked anyone like you believe.” You smirked. “Well, only Levi.”
She gripped her glass. “I know you’re fucking around. You don’t belong here.”
You smiled. “You’re right, I don’t and yet here I am wearing an incredible dress waiting for my dear friend to see me and my fiancé to return.” You twirled a bit. “I think I look amazing and I’m having a great time.”
“You’re ugly!”
You hummed a laugh. “That’s your opinion. Why would I care what some nobody thinks about my looks when I like them and my fiancé fucking loves them.”
She snarled. “You’re using those men!”
You tilted your head. “I don’t think I am.” You looked behind her to see the gents had gathered and had heard everything, they didn’t approach because they wanted to let you deal with it. “What do you think, gentlemen?”
The woman flinched and slowly turned to face the men. “I ah…”
Shuji handed you your drink.  “I find this sweet thing a delight.” He turned to the woman. “I approached her and she was very forward in telling me she was taken. She didn’t flirt with me, I did and she made it clear she was in love. I stick around because she’s fun and a great friend.”
Lucas leaned around the woman and smirked. “I like her because she makes me laugh. She also keeps me in check. She’s like a sister to me.”
Shino snarled a little. “Same here.”
The woman flinched. “A-Ah.” She bumped into Erwin. “S-Sorry.”
Erwin smiled kindly but his eyes hinted murder. “She’s a wonderful person and a good friend to us all.”
Mike snorted. “She’s the glue that keeps us together.”
Levi yanked you against him and kissed you so passionately that everyone couldn’t help but stare in shock. He pulled back and smiled. “I’m back. Did you miss me?”
You nodded as your cheeks heated up. “Y-Yes.”
He squeezed you a moment and swayed as you sipped your drink. “I know your husband. He’s a wilting old crusty thing that doesn’t know what he’s doing. Maybe I should inform you that he’s going into debt right now. He’s ruined.”
The woman dropped her glass causing it to smash everywhere. “Wh-What?” She covered her mouth with her hand. “Oh…oh god! No!”
You watched her run off. “Poor thing.” You looked around at the men surrounding you. “What?”
Lucas winked. “You’re cute.”
You grinned. “I’m so happy. I feel like I have so many big brothers.” You giggled as the gents blushed and smiled. “Thank you, all of you for being my friends. I know I met you all through Levi, but I’m really happy.”
Erwin released a long sigh. “Levi? Your fiancée is adorable.”
Levi picked you up and squeezed you as others praised you. “She’s the best. Now, do you want to have fun and gamble?”
You hummed. “I find gambling a bit boring, but I would find it very hot if you are incredible at it.”
Shino laughed. “Mr Ackerman is a pro.”
Mike snorted. “No one can beat him when it comes to casinos. I’m assuming it’s the face.”
Levi frowned a bit and started touching his face. “What’s wrong with my face?”
You leaned up and kissed him. “It’s too handsome.”
“I feel better.” He pulled you close. “Now, let’s play a few games.”
It was impressive how well Levi played. Seeing his friends spread around the room and win their games was so impressive. Each time Levi won, you celebrated causing Levi to smile and play a lot more. However, as Levi played the more an older man got irritated, you were sure he was some sort of bigshot in the city.
“Mm.”
Levi glanced at you. “Something up?”
“Who is the angry older man?”
Levi looked up from his cards and hummed. “Frank Cassio. He’s an old gangster. My father butted heads with him a lot and Dad took a lot of what belonged to Cassio. So, he hates me for that.”
You kissed Levi’s ear. “He hates you more for beating him over and over in poker.”
“Yep.” He gazed deep into your eyes. “Even more now that I have you. You’re such a pretty lady.”
You giggled as Levi nibbled and licked your neck. “He’s not thinking that, but it’s cute.”
Cassio slammed his fist down. He smiled a bit as he controlled his anger. “Mr Ackerman, you always seem to be winning at things.” He chuckled. “It’s impressive. You’re stealing everything from us older men.”
You hummed. “Well, you lovely gents paved the way. You’re all incredible.”
Cassio laughed. “You going to let your woman speak for you?” He glared at you. “In my day.” He spat his word at you. “While I was paving the way.” It was clear he thought very little of women. “Women did as their men told them. They kept their mouths shut and enjoyed pretty things their man got them.” He looked over at Levi. “Mr Ackerman, we should have a meeting so I can guide you on how to discipline your lover better. A good leader has a woman slightly behind him at his side, not as an equal. She’s stepping out of line.”
Levi placed his cards down showing he’d won. “I think you should mind your own business. I like that the woman I will marry has an opinion and can do a lot more than cook a simple dry meatloaf.” He smiled at Cassio. “Oh, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to reveal what I thought of your wife’s meatloaf. I just assumed I would be too because you were being picky and petty.”
You placed your hands on Levi’s chest. “Don’t start a fight, please.”
“Alright, my love bunny.”
Cassio clenched his jaw. “Weak.”
You kissed Levi and looked over at Frank. “He’s stronger than you. Just because a man is in love doesn’t mean he’s weak.” You looked back at Levi and smiled. “Shall we go? I’m hungry.”
Levi kissed you back. “Yes.”
Tumblr media
“Mean.”
Levi cupped your face and kissed you. “I am.”
You turned your head away. “Very mean.”
He hummed a laugh. “Big meanie.”
You looked back at him and gave him your bright wide eyes. “Levi.”
He released a long sigh. “Fine, fine. You can go out and have a fun shopping trip with Lucas and Shino.”
You squealed in delight. “Thank you!”
He handed you a card. “Buy anything you want.”
You reached over and took the card. “This?”
He kissed your forehead. “Yep. Don’t worry about the price of things, okay? I can afford a lot of things.”
You gripped his card tightly. “I’ve never…umm…”
“Have fun, okay? I want you to have fun.”
You put the card in your purse. “I’ll get it back to you.”
“No.” He kissed you. “It’s for you.”
You blushed. “Th-thank you.”
He patted you on the butt. “Off you pop then. I’ll be here. I have work to do with Erwin and Mike. Call me if you need anything, okay?”
You nodded. “Promise.”
He played with your hair before kissing you. “Mm, I love you so much.”
“I love you too.” You kissed him again. “I’ll see you in a bit.” You hurried out the door and called Lucas. “Hey! I’m on my way.”
Lucas happily called your name. “Great! We’ll meet you at the café. Looks like Levi is texting Shino already about keeping you safe.”
You giggled as you jogged across the road. “He was reluctant to let me go today, so maybe he knows something is up. Have things been okay in the city?”
“Not that we’re aware of.” He lowered his phone. “Yo, Shino? You aware of anything going funny in this city?”
Shino tapped on his phone. “Mm, nope. We just have the usual grumpy people.”
Lucas nodded and then spoke to you. “Shino says people are just being grumpy.”
You hummed a laugh. “So, Levi’s just deeply loving.”
“Bingo.”
You stopped outside a shop and admired a ring for Levi. “Mm…I’m thinking I should get Levi a ring.”
“He’d love that.”
You leaned closer to the window. “There’s a nice black one in the window.”
“You should get it.”
You bounced up and down. “Yes!” You hurried inside and bought the ring. “It’s so cute.”
Lucas laughed. “Hey, Shino! She bought the boss a ring.”
Shino smiled. “That’s so cute. Boss will love that.”
“Shino says the boss will love it.”
You felt your cheek heat up as you walked out of the shop. “I hope so.” You squealed when you slammed into someone. “Ow. Sorry.” You looked up at the hugged man. “I didn’t see you there. Sorry.”
The big man with a scar over his nose smirked. “This her?”
The man with black eyes lifted his phone. “Yep.”
You gripped your phone hard. “Lucas? I think I need help.”
Lucas shouted your name. “Hold on!” His face went white when he heard you screaming and shouting. “Fuck! Shino!”
Shino sprinted over. “We need to get moving, now.” He tapped on his phone. “Mr Ackerman? This is an emergency.” He said your name as panic washed over him. “She’s been ambushed and taken. Do you have a tracker on her?”
Levi felt a cold rush of pure fear go through him. “I-I do. I-I’ll track her. I want everyone on this! NOW.”
“Yes, sir!”
It was all so sudden. One minute you were buying a ring for Levi and now you were being dragged away by four men. You kicked and screamed as much as possible and made sure your phone was in your hand. You were sure that Levi could track you with your phone. You had to do what you could to survive whatever this was. You didn’t fight much at first, but as soon as you were thrown into the back of the van you started your fighting.
You smacked one with your handbag as much as possible before they grabbed it. You screamed and clawed and the biggest one's face. You yelped when you were turned and shoved face-first against the floor. You wiggled as much as possible while they tied your wrists too tightly. You bucked against the floor and kicked back. As you kicked, one of your kicks connected with the jaw of the scared one. Rage and irritation were clear in the four of them, so they got rougher with handling you.
You huffed and panted against the floor. “If you’re going to hurt me, at least tell me who sent you all.”
The huge man leaned over and spoke against your ear. “We’ve been sent to put you in your place and to show Mr Ackerman how weak he is.”
You gritted your teeth. “Frank Cassio.”
“You’re a smart cookie.”
You shifted on the floor and felt the rough carpet scratching your skin. “So, I’m going to be a hostage or are you going to beat me?”
“Mr Cassio said we have to teach you a lesson. So, yeah we’re beating you.”
You gulped hard and knew you needed to delay things so Levi could find you. “Beat me? You’re going to beat me?” You laughed, but you were afraid. “I can’t believe you idiots get paid to beat a woman. It took all four of you to manhandle me into the van. You’re all pathetic.”
The van doors flew open right after you finished talking. You were dragged out kicking and screaming. You fought with everything you had while your arms were tied behind your back. As they moved you, you felt a cold chill go through you. You had no idea what they were going to do to you, but you had an imagination and you were assuming the worst.
The leader pointed. “Throw her there.”
You cried out when you slammed against the cold concrete floor. “Ngh.” You shifted onto your back and moved away from them. “You want to break me? Want me to scream and beg?” You smiled as one walked closer to you with fists clenched. “I can take it.”
He grabbed your shirt and lifted you from the floor. “Good, because we have a lot of things to get through. Many tools.”
The first strike against your face didn’t hurt that much, your body went into pure shock at the impact. The next few hits that cause your lip to bust over and blood to pour, those started to hurt. As the hits kept coming, you didn’t say a single thing or make a noise. After a few more hits you were dropped to the floor in a weak heap.
You panted a moment and spat out blood as your eye started to swell up. “Mm. Levi’s going to kill you all.”
The one with a scar walked over with a cane. “You fucked up my jaw.”
You smirked. “Really? Little ol’ me fucked up your jaw? I should have done worse.”
He spun the cane. “Cute. You’ll change your mind in a bit.”
The cane collided with your arm and gut. With each blow, your body was tossed and turned around on the floor causing a new part of you to be hit. You were thankful that there wasn’t more blood coming from you, but it did mean you were going to be covered in bruises. Everything hurt, everything was painful but you wouldn’t give in to the jests and shouts.
The leader smirked. “She’s a tough one. Mr Cassio did warn us.” He hummed a moment as he thought. “Break a bone.”
Black eyes walked closer. “I’ll break her leg. Are we going for a weapon or stomping?”
“Have fun with it.”
He pulled his leg up and stomped down hard on your leg multiple times. With each stomp, he was sure that he broke your leg at least in two places. He stopped and frowned. “Not a single scream or whimper.”
You panted on the floor and tried not to vomit. Blood seeped from your mouth and face with each beat of your heart. “You’re all fucked.” You turned your head and looked over at the leader. You were about to speak, but there was a loud banging getting closer. “Oh.” You laughed. “Levi is here.”
The leader snarled. “Go stop that man. We have a job to do here.” He stared at you as his men ran out. “I want to see if I can break you more before he arrives.” He walked closer to you and kicked you onto your back. “Can you guess what I’ll do?”
You smiled at him. “Yes, but I don’t think you will.”
“Why’s that?”
You slammed your foot into his crotch three times before he doubled over. “I might have one broken leg, but my other one works, you fuck!”
He dropped to his knees and coughed as he held his junk. “You…fucking…bitch!”
You shifted back on the cold, sweaty and blood-covered concrete floor. You gulped hard as the massive six-foot-five man, who was also incredibly weighty, moved towards you. “Get back. I’ll kick your fucking face in!”
He smirked at you. “Try it, little bitch.”
You screamed and kicked him in the face. As you went to kick again he grabbed your ankle and yanked you towards him. “Get off me!” You turned your head a bit on his shoulder and sunk your teeth into his flesh. You yanked back and spat out the blood and flesh as he screamed in pain. You inhaled deeply “LEVIIII! I’M IN HERE!”
He grabbed your neck in his massive hands and began squeezing. “You’re nothing but trouble! Boss was wrong about you. You just need to die.”
You thrashed under him, but there was no use. This man’s body was bigger and stronger, plus your arms were behind your back. You gritted your teeth and fought back as much as possible as you begged and prayed Levi would come and save you before you blacked out. It was becoming scary now because the corners of your vision were spotty.
You locked eyes with the man then gasped when he was launched away from you. You rolled onto your side and coughed hard while loud thudding went on. You winced a bit and looked over to the massive man on the floor being broken. You panted a bit and lifted your head to see Levi’s eyes filled with rage, his beautiful raven hair slipping out of place, his teeth gritted into a snarl.
His fist came down against the giant of a man over and over. Blood rained down on the floor and some coated Levi’s suit and face. He pulled back and started kicking the man a few times. Levi screamed and began punching the man again. The furry and raw power behind Levi’s punches was like nothing anyone had seen before. His backup arrived consisting of Shino, Erwin, Luke and Shuji. The four men watched for a bit before racing over to stop him.
As Shino, Luke and Shuji held Levi back Erwin looked him in his eyes and brought him back down to Earth. “Levi! Levi, focus. We need to find your fiancée. We need to help her.”
You shifted weakly on the floor. “Levi?”
Levi looked over at where your weak voice came from. He softly said your name and shoved his men off him. “Where are you?”
“Here.”
He stumbled to see you on the floor. It horrified him that you were right there the whole time, but you were so bloodied and beaten that he didn’t recognise you. Tears filled his eyes as he hurried over to you. “What…you…”
You whined. “Levi.”
He patted his body and pulled out his knife. He cut the bindings on your wrists and carefully moved you onto your back in his arms. “Bunny.”
You sighed. “Thank you. My wrists hurt.” You gulped hard. “Sorry, I look like shit.”
He gently squeezed you. “You’re beautiful.”
“I bought you a ring.”
He kissed your forehead. “Thank you.”
Shino crouched next to Levi. “Mr Ackerman, the paramedics are here. You need to let them take her.”
Levi gripped you. “I can’t.”
You reached up and caressed Levi’s cheek. “I need the hospital. You can come with me.”
He nodded. “Mm.”
“Levi.”
He lay you down as his hands shook. “O-Okay.” He watched the paramedics tend to you. “She’ll be okay, right?”
The lead paramedic smiled at Levi. “Yes, don’t worry she’s in good hands.”
As soon as the bed went up, you weakly reached over and held his hand. “I love you.”
Levi smiled. “I love you so much.”
“Wear the ring.”
He nodded as he smiled through his tears. “I’ll wear it with pride.”

story summary: Levi isn’t hungry, or so that’s what he claims. A vampire must drink to survive, and his sire refuses to let the man give up without trying every trick up his sleeve. When a new ‘donor’ appears, one who is different from all the rest, will Levi be able to keep resisting?
pairing: Levi Ackerman (vampire) x female reader (human)
general warnings/tags: vampire AU, mentions of blood and everything that goes hand in hand with vampirism, slow(ish) burn, eventual smut, angst, heavy appearances of Erwin Hange and Miche, Erwin is a bastard (but we still love him okay?), original lore ideas, hidden agendas, I want to maintain suspense so I won’t tag everything but if it’s something I would consider triggering then I will tag it accordingly, kinda dark romance, Levi is not always so good with his emotions, chapters will have individual warnings

Imagine a reader who has chronic nightmares and is afraid of falling asleep meeting and being comforted by Morpheus! <3
Angst? But with fluff? A bit of hurt/comfort??? HELL YESSSSSSSSSSSSS
At first you were accustom to the constant nightmares, although it was irksome and annoying to wake up with your heart pounding up in your throat, but you eventually accepted this was your fate. However, over the last month these nightmares leave you fearful to even sleep now. You held off sleep, drank an ungodly amount of caffeine, tried meditation and even some over the counter medication but none of it worked. Once you closed your eyes, you were tormented only to wake up minutes later and doomed to repeat the process.
Your disruptive sleep also gained the attention of the one responsible for such nightmares. Morpheus sensed the minor disruption, along with his nightmares moving onto the next dreamer suddenly. Curious, he turned his gaze to you. He watched as you appeared in a warped version of Fiddler Green with a slew of his nightmares lurking about. He watched as your eyes adjusted to the darkness only for you to instantly cower at the crunch of twigs and dried leaves. You swore under your breath, recognizing the place.
Then the hunt began.
A nightmare - a mix of predatory beasts and mythology - charged. Your breath hitched and your legs immediately knew what they must do: run. You ran and ran. But, the running was futile. The nightmare leapt high into the air, landing on your back. You screamed, you pleaded, you cried, then you disappeared.
You had woken up.
From then on, Morpheus was intrigued by you. He watched you a few more times, and each time a small ache in his chest grew. Nightmares were essential. They forced mortals to face their fears, to overcome them, yet this? This was not it. You were being tormented, instead of aiding he was hindering you.
So, when you fell asleep, Morpheus was ready.
This time instead of seeing the gnarly trees with its spindle like branches mimicking claws, you saw an endless field of an assortment of flowers.
“Is this to your liking?”
You whipped around. Your heart leapt up into your throat, ready for the nightmare to begin. It was no nightmare, nor monster. It was a man. He slowly approached you. “No nightmares will plague you tonight,” he said softly, like reassurance from a lover.
“How - how do you know that?” You asked, stepping back from him. “Who are you? Where am I and -“
“I am merely a friend at this moment,” he continued. “Please, allow me to right this wrong.”
He extended out a hand. You eyed it unsure of any of it.
“You will be under my care, let me offer you a sweeter night.”
What do I have to lose?
You stepped forward and slowly put your hand in his. His eyes softened. You cleared your throat, “What … what did you want to show me?”
“So much, my dreamer.”
For the first time in so long, you slept so soundly. You woke up with a long happy sigh, and with the feeling of your stranger’s hand in yours. Later that night, you were eager to fall back asleep. A voice warned you of a possible nightmare, but when you opened your eyes seeing the grand field you knew nothing would harm you again. And when your eyes meet your stranger’s dazzling blue, you felt so at peace. As if welcomed back home.
He extended his hand out again, “Where to now, my dreamer?”

i have this fic idea but i do not upload fanfics,
it's actor! levi x actor! reader or whomever you want the ship to be, but the catch is-- Levi is just starting out in the industry while reader is a veteran plus he's a big fan of reader.
He then got casted into a romance film as male lead and reader as the gn lead. This is so cliche but they end up together irl 😭 soo idk i just think of Levi fangirling over someone and actually being together with them.

ℐ 𝓌𝒾𝓈𝒽 𝓎ℴ𝓊 𝓌ℯ𝓇ℯ 𝓂𝓎 𝒹𝒶𝒹
Req: Platonic Dad!Morpheus x Daughter!reader with a dynamic like Ellie and Joel
This has been in my drafts since like last year LMFAOO 😭 😭 I think that @kpopgirlbtssvt requested this ?? I could be wrong. Terribly sorry I didn’t actually release this until now it’s been buried underneath my drafts
Tumblr media
Being the daughter of a dream and a demon was anything but fun. Your dad was sending hell hounds after you now, how messed up is that?!
Your mom had no clue, the poor woman. She disappeared and you were left to fend for yourself- for a while. That was until a man came to you.
Running through the streets, a portal opened up in front of you. Your eyes widened and you stumbled back, falling onto the floor.
Please don’t be my dad, please don’t be my dad. You thought. Anything but that.
It wasn't. Instead, it was a man with raven-black hair, his sharp eyes glaring at you. You let your elbows hold you up, furrowing your eyebrows.
"Who are you?"
"I am the king of dreams. Morpheus.” He held out his hand, helping you stand up. You brushed yourself off. “You are…?”
“Y/n… wait, if you’re the king of dreams, does that mean you knew my mom?”
He nodded. “I did.”
A small frown making it way onto his face. “But I’m here to take you to my world, the dreaming.”
“What about-“
“You don’t need to worry about any of that. I’m here to take care of it.” He spoke before you, already knowing what you were worried about.
You stared, dumbfounded and confused at the man in front of you. Did he read your mind or something?
“Let’s take a walk, shall we?” He spoke up, looking around the place. You just followed him and walked beside him as he spoke more about you, and about the dreaming itself.
He was an interesting man, you thought.
“The demon, or your dad, tricked your mom into thinking he was a dream. It was too late when she realized. I’m guessing that’s why she ran away with you. She truly was a wonderful dream. She only wanted you to be safe.”
“I’m sorry, Morpheus, Sir, but I’m still really confused.”
“It’s a lot.” He told you. “I know. But I just need you to listen. The only way you can be safe is if you’re in the dreaming. With me. You’ll be safe there. But I can’t help you here, I’m afraid.”
You hesitated, he held his hand out for you. You let out a sigh, looking behind you, and slowly grabbing his hand.
—-
After the few months of getting to know the dreaming and morpheus, you realized, it was better than being on the run.
You got your own room, it was huge. And you got protection from anything. It was perfect.
You went with morpheus for multiple things, including on the search for your mom. You got closer with him.
There was one day you both were walking in a park, you both had just outran some people.
Out of nowhere, when you sat down, you looked to Morpheus.
“I wish you were my dad.”
His eyebrows furrowed in confusion, but a small smile tugged on his lips.

“Inmate 012025, Ackerman. It’s time.”
With a loud thud, the heavy, titanium doors slide open, and bright light fills the small cell.
”Hands against the back wall. Make it quick.”
Levi stands up and walks to the back of his cell. With a sigh he raises his hands and presses them against the wall.
Immediately a guard grabs his arms and places them behind his back, before clicking the cold cuffs around his wrists.
“Don’t give us any trouble now, Ackerman.”
As if he would do something today, of all days.
The two guards lead him down the corridor, past all the other cell doors; Levi can feel the other inmates staring out from the tiny window on their cell door. Their eyes follow him, wild and predatory.
But Levi Ackerman had never been their prey.
One of the guards presses a code into a keypad and another heavy door opens. There’s a series of offices, all behind thick-plated, forcefield glass.  The three men move toward a desk where a woman with blue hair, deep wrinkles and uninterested eyes types in the air. With a blink of her eyes, the screen before her disappears.
”Ackerman, Levi?”
Levi nods and the woman takes a device that scans his eye, confirming his identity.
“Hold out your right hand.”
He does so, while she scans another device over his wrist. There’s a sharp sting, and then the glowing tattoo of his inmate number - 012025 - was gone.
“That takes care of the detection device implanted inside your wrist,” she informs in a monotone voice.
Levi touches the silver button behind his left ear. “What about my cerebral comm system?”
“It’s been completely deleted. You’ll have to have someone reactivate it.”
The woman moves to a back room and returns with a large vinyl bag.
”Here are your belongings. You can change there.” She gestures to a door just outside their office cluster.
Levi takes the items, walks to the room and closes the door. He steps out of the grey prison jumpsuit and stands there in just his underwear, looking at the stack of clothing he hasn’t seen or felt in almost five years: a black t-shirt, black combat pants, boots, socks..
He puts on each item, and wonders if he’ll feel different - if he’ll revert back to the man he used to be before he was put behind titanium bars.
But he doesn’t feel different. He doesn’t feel….anything.
When he finishes dressing, the guards walk him to the outer gate of the prison. The forcefield comes down and Levi takes his first step outside as a free man.
”You’re late. I’ve been waiting out here for over 30 minutes,” comes a voice from behind him.
Levi turns to see a tall man with sandy brown hair leaning against a cherry red vehicle. “I thought you’d done something to get another year added to your sentence.”
”Tch, as if I had any say in what time they’d release me.”
”You look like shit.”
”Takes a piece of shit to know one.”
Both men glare at each other, then the tall one smirks. “Good to see you again, Levi.” He pats him on the shoulder.
”You too, Farlan..” Levi replies warmly.
”Come on, let’s get you out of here.”
The car’s engine purrs as Farlan weaves in and out of traffic. Levi is enveloped by the leather seat, the glow of the neon accents inside reflecting off of Farlan’s dark suit coat.
”Looks like you’re doing well for yourself,” Levi says.
“The last few years I’ve been managing all our legit businesses, making sure they look good on paper. At least good enough that nobody will snoop around further.”
”So you’re a paper pusher,” Levi remarks. “Never thought I’d see the day.”
”Beats fixing the books for underground gambling rings,” Farlan answers defensively. “It’s the same concept though, just a different arena. I’m suited for this.”
Farlan had always been smart. He knew how to work the angles and how to get people to let down their guard.
They’d met at the orphanage they were both put in during one of Neo Tokyo’s efforts to, “alleviate the growing population of homeless children littering the city’s streets.” Farlan had convinced Levi that his calorie bar - the only thing they received for dinner - was infested with invisible larvae and that if he gave it to him he'd get another one. Finally figuring out he’d been conned, the next day he punched Farlan in the face and took his daily ration.
They’d been friends ever since.
During their teenage and young adult years with the Ackerman clan, everyone knew their names. They had their hands in almost every backalley operation - from gambling to fights and everything in between.
And if Farlan had been the brains of their operation, then Levi was the brawn. Farlan could shake people down through intellect, and when that didn’t work, Levi would beat them to a pulp. Together, they were feared and respected.
They had been equals. But now, after five years, Levi felt left behind.
“So where are you taking me? I need a shower.” Levi scrunches his nose at the musty smell emanating from his clothing.
”To your apartment. I made sure they didn’t touch anything. It’s all there as you left it.”
”Probably a dusty mess…but thanks for looking after the place.”
”Wasn’t that hard. Not like you had much stuff in there.”
”…and Isabel?” Levi asks tentatively, afraid to know the answer.
”Still functioning, and still entirely devoted to you. She could barely contain her excitement today.”
Levi felt a rush of relief. He never thought he’d feel any sort of affection for an android, but Isabel was different. She was a friend and comrade, and had saved his ass on more than one occasion, stitching up his cuts and gashes from a fight or standing beside him during a back alley brawl. But he was often surprised by how human she behaved sometimes, tearing up when she’d see a dead animal on the side of the road, or stealing food to give to a needy family.
Sometimes he thought she was more human than he was.
The buildings grew higher and higher the closer they got to the city center, their reach seeming to pierce the orange-red sky of the late afternoon. The next thing he knew, Farlan was pulling up to his apartment building, both of them entering the elevator decorated with layers upon layers of graffiti, and finally walking down the hallway and standing in front of his apartment door.
It was finally hitting him. He was free.
”I bought you some suits, hopefully they fit. Though you do look like you’ve bulked up a bit.”
”Not much else to do in prison but exercise. I tried to train as much as I could, too. I wanna get back into the ring.”
“After all this, you still want to fight?”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“It’s just…nevermind. Take a shower, get dressed,” Farlan hesitates. “Oyabun wants to see you this evening.”
“Oyabun…” Levi repeats, the word turning sour in his mouth. “Your professionalism is getting on my nerves. You don’t have to talk to me like I’m some new recruit.”
“That’s who he is, Levi. He deserves our respect.”
Levi grimaces. “So Kenny’s pulling my leash already, huh?”
”Levi.. I know things were…strained between the two of you before, but he kept you protected while you were in prison.”
”Bullshit.”
”Believe what you want.” Farlan waves his hand in surrender before walking towards the door. “I’ll be back this evening.”
”Don’t bother, I can drive there myself. Where’s my bike?”
“It needed some tuning up since it’s been out of commission for so long. Isabel’s getting it ready for you.” Farlan turns to grin at his friend. “So you’re stuck with being chauffeured by me just a little longer. See you in a few hours.”
The door shuts and Levi is surrounded by silence. It’s a different sound than he’s used to; even though it’s the space he lived in for years, it feels unfamiliar and new.
His eyes scan the room; it really was exactly as he left it. Always the minimalist, his small sofa nestled in a corner across from a dining table with two chairs. No pictures, no books; the only personal item was an antique ceramic teapot and two cups.
”Petra.”
Suddenly, the lights fade up in the room, as if the apartment itself was coming to life.
”Welcome back, Levi,” the female voice resonates in the space, “it’s good to have you back. I haven’t been activated in such a long time.”
”Yeah, I’ve been…away.”
”Shall I prepare you some tea?”
”That’d be great,” Levi pulls off his shirt, “but I’d like to take a bath first.”
There’s a chime of recognition and then, “The bath water is ready. Please relax, sir.”
”Thanks.”
Levi had always felt prompted to treat Petra respectfully, even though he knew she was just an apartment AI - an assistant built into almost every home in Neo Tokyo. But it was so rare for him to hear a kind word from anyone in his life, so hearing her voice made him feel like he was being reunited with an old friend.
He takes off his clothes and turns on the shower, taking a sponge to wash away the dirt and grime from his body and hoping in some small way, that it might wash away some of the memories as well.
But those proved harder to get rid of. He knew only time could do that.
He finally sinks into the steaming bath water and a heavy sigh escapes his lips; he can feel his muscles relaxing with the heat, years of built up tension slowly melting away. The Martians of Neo Tokyo knew what an important resource water was, but now Levi felt it in his very bones.
Stepping out of the bath, he looked at his naked body in the mirror. He was bulkier than he was five years ago, Farlan was right about that. His lean, muscular frame, useful for street fighting and cage matches, was now replaced by more defined arms and chest; it was noticeable now, even beneath the tattoos swirling on his body.
A giant eagle, designed in the classical Japanese style, stretched across the length and width of his back; its wings outstretched and talons out, as if attacking prey. A red moon shone from his right shoulder and clouds wrapped around his torso, swirling up his abs and around his pectoral muscles. Over his left pec was the Ackerman clan crest, the Japanese character for power, 力, encased inside a circle.
That had been his first tattoo, when he was initiated into the Ackerman clan as a teenager. That felt like an eternity ago now.
His yakuza tattoos covered many of the scars Levi had received throughout his life, but there were new scars from his years of incarceration. He collected them all like badges of honor; evidence that he’d survived another day.
He found his electric shaver and erased the light stubble growing on his face, then decided to shave his undercut again, just like he’d always had it. But this time, he kept his hair slightly longer than it had been before. He slicked it back with a comb, exposing the sharp features of his face - flawless, except for one scar running through his right eyebrow, breaking it in two and barely missing his eye.
He’d forgotten how he'd received most of his scars, but that one…
…he’d never forget that night.
Wrapping a towel around his waist, he walks to his bedroom.
”Petra, I’ll take that tea now. Green jasmine.”
”Right away,” she responds.
As Farlan had promised, there were several suits hanging in the small closet. The yakuza were old fashioned, and clan members always preferred the look of the classic, tailored suit, in contrast to the bright and bold fashions prevalent on the streets of the city. Levi scans each one and decides on a dark navy blue suit with a white shirt. In a drawer are several ties, but he decides to forgo them and instead keeps the top two buttons undone, slightly exposing his chest tattoos that start just under his collarbone.
If Kenny wants him to wear a suit then he’ll do it his way.
He rummages through another drawer and finds his gold earring stud. The hole in his ear has grown smaller but he pushes it through, wincing just a bit as it breaks through skin. He welcomes the pain, though. Pain has always made him feel alive.
“Your tea is ready, sir.”
Levi takes the tea cup from the food preparation compartment and eases into a chair that’s facing his balcony window. How long has it been since he’s had a steaming cup? Tea wasn’t the type of contraband that could be obtained in prison, no matter what an inmate had to trade. He lifts the cup to his lips and takes a sip, breathing in the aroma.
”These are imported leaves from off-planet. Where did you get them?”
Petra blinks on. “Mr. Church wanted to make sure that you had the best for your homecoming.”
Levi’s lips turn upward into a faint smirk.
Farlan.
He guesses his old friend can afford things like this now. No more slumming it like they did when they were kids. He’d made his way in the world, and now Levi wanted to as well.
But first things first…
He finishes his tea then grabs his suit jacket. “Petra, I’ll be back later,” he says to the room, before stepping out of his apartment and into the city streets. The sun was just starting to set, creating a copper glow to the sky as it reflected off the high rise buildings and skyscrapers. Neo Tokyoites filled the sidewalks, bustling from one place to the next, but no one drifted an eye toward Levi as he walked along the city streets - just another face in the crowd.
The city hadn’t changed much since Levi had left it, but even if it had, he could make it to his destination with his eyes closed. He takes a right, then a left, turning into a narrow alley and scaring a cat or two before arriving at an unmarked door.
He knocks once, a pause, then two more quick knocks.
There’s commotion on the other side of the door, as if someone is scrambling towards it. Then it bolts open.
“Aniki! I knew you’d come!”
A small red-headed young woman throws her arms around Levi’s neck, practically throwing his body across the alley.
“See? Didn’t I tell you he’d come right away?” she boasts as she pulls him through the space Levi had once used for training. His punching bag was still there, gathering cobwebs in the corner, along with his other training equipment, but the rest of the room was now littered with electronics and various tools.
And sitting in another corner was Farlan, scrolling through his comm device as he lounged in one of the only chairs in the entire space.
“Isabel knew you wouldn’t stay in your apartment for long, so I thought I might as well just wait for you here. Saves me a trip, anyway.” Farlan smirks.
Isabel can hardly contain her excitement. “The trio is back together, just like old times!”
Old times…Levi thinks as he looks around the space. Everything - and he’s sure everyone - has changed, but it’s a relief to see that Isabel is still the same.
Levi puts his hand on the top of her head. “Glad to see that Kenny didn’t get rid of you once I was arrested.”
“What? No way! Farlan got me out of there the moment you were busted. He’s been getting me steady work ever since, working on bikes and cars, even some augments here and there.” Her face beams, “Kenny may have thought me a useless android, but I’ve been making my own way.”
That also gave Levi some relief. Throughout these past years, he’d wondered what had become of the spunky little android he’d saved from the wrecking yard.
Levi had always had a soft spot for things that were considered broken beyond repair.
“Isabel, I need you to reboot my cerebral comm connection.”
“Oh yeah, yeah, not a problem.” Isabel takes his hand again and leads him to a part of the room with a computer connected to a multitude of cables.
Levi sits on what looks almost like an examining table, leaning his face into the light above. “You’ve got quite the set up here.”
“Since I’m not a certified augmentation android, I have to stay under the radar, so most of my clients come from Farlan or from word of mouth.”
Isabel rolls her chair over to Levi. “Just turn your head to the right for me…” One of her small hands finds the silver button behind his left ear and with one swipe of her tool, pops it out.
“Let’s see what I can do here..”
There’s a slight sense of pressure as Isabel sticks a cable into the port, connecting Levi to her computer. She rolls back over to her station, clicking her keyboard methodically.
“All your contacts are still here…at least they didn’t try to wipe your memory for names and information.”
“Oh they tried,” Levi remarks, “but it didn’t work. Seems my Ackerman genes are good for more than just kicking people’s asses.”
“I bet that pissed them off,” Farlan adds, still scrolling through the air with his pointer finger as images only he can see moves across his eyes.
“Almost there..” Isabel says, intensely concentrated on her computer screen.
There’s a few more clicks of her keyboard, and then Levi feels a slight jolt of electricity through his head.
“And that should be it.” Isabel rolls back over the Levi, disconnecting him and replacing the silver button. “You should be connected to your old contact list now.”
“Thanks.” Levi pats her head again and she grins from ear to ear.
“I’ll have your bike ready for you tomorrow.” The red-head responds while Levi gets up from the examining table. Farlan gets up, giving both of them a look that says it’s time to go. As Isabel walks them to the door she puts a tentative hand on Levi’s arm.
“Aniki…once the word is out that you’ve been released, people are going to wonder when you’ll start fighting again.”
“That’s a good question, and one I’m about to get an answer to,” he responds.
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆
The Ackerman Clan headquarters was housed in a nondescript, four-story building, just on the outskirts of the entertainment district. The only thing that made it stand out from the other business buildings was the Ackerman crest emblazoned next to the door; no other signs were needed, and inhabitants of Neo Tokyo didn’t have to be fluent in Japanese to know its meaning…
Power. The word that’s synonymous with Ackerman.
Farlan pulls up and the door to his car lifts up automatically. “Oyabun is in his office - I assume you remember where everything is.”
“You’re not coming in.”
“Nah, not this time. Kenny wanted to meet with you privately, and I have a meeting to get to, anyway. I’ll see you later this evening.”
Levi steps out of the car, straightening his suit jacket before stepping up to the door. The moment he touches the handle the door unlocks for him.
At least he knows he hasn’t been completely shut out of the organization.
There are voices coming from the second floor - new recruits, most likely, being made to clean and prepare dinner for the evening. Levi remembered the hierarchical structure well; it was something he’d also had to go through in his teenage years. But unlike the others here, he wasn’t recruited into this clan.
It was something he was born into.
The elevator takes him to the top floor, which was reserved entirely for the clan’s leader. Levi walks through the empty reception area and knocks on the office door.
“Come in,” a low, gravelly voice answers.
Behind the door is a room split in half; the front part serving as a reception area and in the back, a broad desk surrounded by pictures of past leaders. The man behind the desk grins broadly then stands up, gesturing to Levi to come in. His face shares many of the same features as Levi: a sharp profile and even sharper eyes of a stormy grey hue. He’s taller than Levi, however, and leaner, with a powerful aura that fills the entire space.
“Look who’s back from the dead,” he says, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
Levi scoffs at the phrase, but it’s true; the last few years in prison made him feel like a corpse, a half-life that dragged on and on. In a way, he has been resurrected.
“Kenny…” he says sharply, “you wanted to see me.”
”Of course I did! It’s not every day that I can celebrate the release of my nephew from prison.” He gives Levi a once-over. “You survived with all your limbs, that’s good. And you look strong,” he frowns, “but not any taller.”
Kenny laughs at his own joke and then offers for Levi to sit, but he refuses, standing in front of the broad desk with his arms crossed.
“And no better sense of humor either,” Kenny deadpans before sitting on the edge of his desk. “Always so serious. But no matter…let’s get right to business.”
At that, Levi finally sits, though he’s on edge and alert, not sure where this conversation might go.
Kenny walks behind his desk where a katana sword is displayed. He picks it up and slowly removes it from the sheath.
“You know, Levi, we Ackermans have been feared for our strength for generations, even before we were yakuza. This power has shaped us into what we are today. I’ve been preparing you to take on this role someday, but you’ve been a pain in my ass from the beginning: disobedient, disorderly, and headstrong. That fire in you needed to be beaten into submission.”
Light glistens off the katana as Kenny moves about the room. “I let you do those cage matches because it gave you a purpose and kept you compliant. But when you started earning huge sums of money, and weren’t paying your dues to me and your brothers - well, that just wouldn’t do.”
Kenny stands in front of Levi now, the katana held loosely at his side. “I hope your time in prison taught you a thing or two about respect, Levi. What I say, goes. Always.”
He pauses, as if expecting to get some sort of reply from Levi, but gets none.
“You were supposed to lose that match - that was the deal we’d set - not beat the humanoid within an inch of his life. You lost me an incredible amount of money, and respect from the Reiss Agency. So you needed to be taught a lesson.”
Levi’s hands ball into fists in his lap, his nails digging into his palms. He takes a deep breath before he responds. “Consider the lesson learned. When can I start fighting again?”
“Fighting?” Kenny laughs. “You think I’m gonna put you in the ring again after that stunt you pulled? Abso-fucking-lutely not. It’s time you started preparing for a bigger leadership role.”
Levi grits his teeth. He wants to grab that katana Kenny holds and slice him right down the middle.
He could do it - he’s strong, probably stronger than Kenny now. He could do it and finally be free.
He takes a breath. No, this isn’t the time.
Be smart…
Kenny presses a button on his desk and a few seconds later, a tall, blonde woman enters.
“Sir,” she says in a stern, serious voice.
“Levi, you remember Caven. She’s my wakagashira now.” He grins. “The title you should have had. I suppose you’ll have to usurp her someday.” Levi can tell that it gives Kenny no greater joy than to think of the two of them fighting for the role and for his approval.
Caven’s eyes slide towards Levi, her body on edge, as if Kenny could call for them to fight any minute. Kenny laughs. “But that’s a problem for another day. Caven, introduce Levi to the new shatei - he’ll be in charge of them now.”
At that, Levi stands up. “What? I don’t want to be in charge of some brats.”
“Oh, but you will, Levi. Because what I say goes.” Kenny’s eyes darken and his voice lowers. He walks towards Levi, looking down at him, the katana still in his hand. “Got it?”
Levi looks away, wordlessly conceding to Kenny’s demand. He turns to follow Caven out of the office.
”I guess this is when I’m supposed to welcome you back,” she says coldly.
”Don’t bother. We don’t have to pretend that we like each other.”
They both walk down the stairs to the second floor. “I’m not sure what you mean, Levi. You’re my brother. We’re all family here - or did you forget that while you were in prison?”
Levi clicks his tongue at the statement. He always thought the yakuza’s obsession with family laughable; if this was supposed to be a family, then it was the most dysfunctional one he’d ever known.
Not that he’d really ever known anything else.
The brief times he’d ever felt the true bonds of family was when he was with Farlan and Isabel, or as a small child, when it was just him and his mother. But those years were fading from his memory with every year he grew older.
“Speaking of which,” Caven opens the door to the second floor, where there are clattering and raised voices coming from the living area.
”I told you to clean this place up!”
”I did! Why can’t we just have androids do this?”
”There are no androids here, idiot. Oyabun is against it. Now hurry up, our brothers are gonna be here soon.”
Caven pinches the bridge of nose and gives a heavy sigh. “Connie! Jean! Get out here.”
Two young men emerge from the room: one on the smaller side, with silvery grey hair and a buzz cut; the other tall and lanky, his light brown hair growing slighting over his undercut.
They both look at each other then at Levi, mouths slightly agape. Caven clears her throat, clearly disappointed at their sudden lack of manners.
”Connie, Jean, this is Levi. He’ll be your big brother from now on and will prepare you to be a true member of the clan.”
”Levi… Ackerman…we heard all about you,” Jean says, bowing deeply. When he sees Connie still standing there staring, he pulls him down as well. “It’s an honor, sir…uh, aniki.”
They both stay in a bow and Levi shifts uncomfortably. “What am I supposed to do with them?”
”Take them around on neighborhood patrols and payment collections. You know, standard stuff.” Caven raises an eyebrow. “Unless you’ve forgotten the basics.”
Levi gives Caven a cold look, then walks over to his new younger brothers, their bodies still at a ninety degree angle.
“Ok, that’s enough. You don’t have to bow to me.” Levi looks around the space as they stand up. “You were cleaning?”
Jean rubs the back of his head nervously. “Yeah…then we were gonna start cooking dinner after we finish this…”
Levi’s discerning eyes continue to survey the room, seeing every hairball and clump of dirt left behind. “Oh, you are nowhere near finished.” He hangs up his suit jacket. “You. Baldy.” His finger points at Connie. “Go get the mop. Jacques – ”
“...it’s Jean, sir..”
“-- get a rag and start wiping everything down.”
“But we just cleaned —,” Connie interjects, but when Levi glances towards him, his mouth clamps shut.
“I’ll leave you all to it, then,” Caven says, sauntering away. “Good luck, you two.”
Connie and Jean immediately start their tasks. Levi rolls up the sleeves of his dress shirt.
”I’m sure you’ve heard lots of things about me, but one thing you should know right now: I do not tolerate filth.”
”Yes, aniki!” They both answer.
”I’ll start on dinner prep. You two join me when you finish here.”

It’s not long until other clan members start ambling into the building for dinner. Levi hears their voices before he sees them, and the corners of his mouth curl into a slight smile.
”It smells cleaner in here! Could it be?”
A tall man with long, blonde hair strides into the kitchen. “If it’s not the man himself! Oi! Levi’s back, everyone!”
“Pipe down, Eld, the whole damn neighborhood can hear you,” Levi chides, before shaking his hand. “Good to see you again.”
“Shit, I don’t believe my eyes. Levi!” Another man enters, patting Levi on the back generously.
“Gunther..”
“It’s about time they let you out..” comes a lackadaisical voice from the back. Levi turns to see a third man, arms crossed, leaning against the wall, a cigarette hanging from his mouth.
“Well you know, Oluo, I had to get back here and beat your ass back into shape.”
Eld and Gunther laugh, but Oluo frowns. “Come on, Levi, I’m a lot stronger now. You’ll see.”
Levi feels a bit uncomfortable with all this attention on him, but it’s expected; these are men he’d known since they were new recruits. He’d done jobs with them, showed them how to take a punch and even give them when needed. It’s amazing how much they’ve changed in just these few years.
He wonders what else has changed in this organization.
“I see you’ve met the little brothers,” Eld says, grabbing Connie and putting him in a headlock.
“I’m in charge of them, actually.”
“Damn,” Oluo laughs. “Hope you two are up for it.”
“Up for what?” Jean asks.
Oluo smirks as he sits down with the others at the table. “For the daily ass beatings you’re gonna get if you don’t keep the damn place spotless.”
Everyone laughs except Connie, Jean, and Levi, who looks at his two little brothers. “They are right about that.”
Connie and Jean eat their food quietly, listening to the stories being told around the table by the others about Levi. He shifts in his chair uncomfortably; he doesn’t particularly like being talked about like he’s some history report, but he’s content enough to listen, especially as the conversation shifts to updates on the clan and its newest exploits.
Hours pass with more stories being told and alcohol being drunk, until Caven walks through the door, a serious look on her face.
“There’s been a disturbance at Club Azure. Some members of the Jaeger Clan are causing a scene and harassing the hostesses. Levi, Kenny wants you to take care of it.”
Before Levi can even respond or refuse, she’s on her way out the door, but stops, glancing at him behind her shoulder. “And take Connie and Jean with you.”
“Fucking Jaeger Clan, thinking they can mess around on our territory,” Gunther says, his hands balling into fists. “Unfortunately for them, Levi’s back.”
Without a word, Levi gets up from the table and grabs his jacket.
“Those Jaegers won’t know what hit ‘em,” Oluo adds.
“Come on,” Levi finally says to his two brothers, who scramble away from the table and file behind him. “Let’s get this over with.”
Levi hadn’t realized how much time had gone by that evening until he stepped out into the brightly lit streets of the entertainment district. Signs flashed and holograms coaxed patrons to step inside their clubs, while drunks stumbled around them, yelling about which bar to hit up next.
Pachinko parlors, night clubs and host and hostess bars lit up every corner of every block; and when these institutions closed in the early morning light, there was still entertainment to be found in the sex clubs and soap lands.
And every one of them was protected by the Ackerman Clan.
“Does Hange still own Club Azure?” Levi asks as they make their way to the club, an easy walk from the clan headquarters.
“Yeah,” Jean answers, “but I’ve heard times have been tough over there.”
“Tough for a lot of the clubs these days, I heard,” Connie adds. “Members of the Jaeger Clan have been busting shit up around here recently and scaring customers away.”
Levi wants to ask more about this Jaeger Clan, but they’ve already arrived at the doors of the club. By the time the three men enter, there are raised voices amidst the smooth jazz music.
“We got ourselves a non-aug!”
Levi hears a voice say over the others. He looks over to the source of the noise and sees a man - probably no more than nineteen or twenty - being slapped by one of the hostesses.
“Don’t you touch me,” the woman says.
A few seconds later, he sees the man backhand the woman.
And that’s when something ignites in Levi.
“Stay here,” he says to Connie and Jean, wasting no time in walking toward the disturbance. The man grabs the woman’s face hard, saying something about not fucking with the Jaeger clan.
“Oi.”
From then on, Levi goes into combat mode, the rest of the world fading away as he throws the man across the room. He senses the rest of the men gathering around him; he deals with them one by one, barely breaking a sweat.
The leader reaches for a weapon in his jacket, but Levi is faster, his knife in his hand in the blink of an eye.
Even in the heat of the moment, his breathing is calm, his heartbeat is steady, and his concentration is laser focused. He feels his strength coursing through him.
The feeling of his fist against skin, his punches sending a resounding crack across the room…
This is who he is. This is what he does.
He blinks a few times when he sees them scrambling away, the room incredibly silent, until -
“Thank you so much, um..”
You’re in front of him suddenly.
Your dress does little to hide every curve of your body, and every bit of skin that is revealed shows not a single tattoo or augmentation. He blinks a few more times to focus on your face, and it’s like time stands still. Tears have formed in the corners of your eyes, probably from the force of the blow to your cheekbone, but your eyes are still bright, undefeated.
No longer able to hold your gaze, he gives you his name and turns away.
Why is his heart beating so fast?
When he reaches the bar he turns around to see you being whisked off by another hostess.
“Whew! Well that was not how I wanted this evening to end.” Hange says, leaning against the bar and looking at Levi. “And when I called Caven, I had no idea you were gonna show up. I didn’t even know you were out of prison.”
“I just got out today.”
Hange laughs and pours him a drink. “I bet this wasn’t the welcome you had in mind.”
“Who’s that girl? The one that got hit.”
“That’s Luna. She just started here today. Guess you two have something in common there.”
“She’s not augmented?”
“Nope. Pure as snow. Not that I’ve ever seen snow before.” Hange pours a drink for themself and downs it in one gulp.
“Where is she from?”
“Earth… Why do you want to know so much about her?”
That breaks Levi from his concentration on you. He doesn’t answer, but instead shifts on the bar stool and takes a swig of his drink.
“It’s natural to have those urges, Levi. You’ve been in prison for so long,” Hange’s voice has a teasing lilt.
“Fuck you, Hange.”
“Not even on a good day, Levi. But she might.” Hange gestures to the dressing room where you’ve been taken.
Wanting to get away from the conversation, Levi gulps down his drink and stands up. “I’ll take my guys and search the perimeter of the club to make sure they’ve left.”
“My hero, just like old times!” Hange yells out, as Levi and the other two walk towards the exit of the club. “Don’t be a stranger!”
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆
“Hange has a new girl working at Azure.”
It’s the first thing Levi says to Farlan when he picks him up the next morning. He hasn’t been able to think about much else since last night.
”You’re not usually interested in the products.”
“She’s from Earth.”
”So what?” Farlan counters.  “There’s lots of Earth refugees here; in fact, many of them work in that sweatshop Kenny has, making fake….”
”She’s not augmented. At all. Not one mark or change.”
Farlan looks up. He knows where this is going. “That’s not a rarity for Earthlings, Levi. It’s a coincidence.”
“What if it’s not?”
”What difference would it make now? What’s done is done, Levi. You can’t change the past.”
”That’s easy for you to say.”
”Look, I know you want answers, but you’re not gonna find them in some girl from Earth. You have a chance to start things over. Don’t stir shit up.”
But it was too late. Levi’s curiosity had already been piqued. His gut told him there was more to you than what you seemed, and he wanted to know what that was.
