i hate making callout posts, hate HATE it. ik. ik it's hypocritical to say that n then post this, but seriously, genuinely, i want more ppl in the good omens community (and beyond) to know abt this. i'm not telling you to unfollow or block or stop supporting--personally, i'm going to, but i can't tell anyone what to do. i just simply want to present the information so people can understand what's been happening in the past few days. i've provided as many screenshots as i can, hopefully with the relevant context for comprehensibility.

everything will be under the read more; warnings for aphobia, mentions of corrective rape, and general bully behavior. obviously, do not harass zoey or anyone else mentioned in this post.

who is zoey / vavoom-sorted-art?

zoey, or vavoom-sorted-art, is a well-known digital artist and writer within the good omens fandom known for her stylistic pieces and anatomy work. she is active on tumblr and on reddit, under the username u/zaay-zaay. she also has a patreon where she posts pieces before anyplace else. her patreon's billing has been paused unrelatedly for the last few months due to her focusing on school.

ok, and?

in the past few days, her fellow good omens creator, close friend, and frequent collaborator moonyinpisces (maddie) has been outed for some scummy behavior, including using their writing-focused discord server to bully other members of the community behind their backs. you can read more about it here and on realrealtruth's blog here. maddie has also had a history of some very suspect posts on tumblr, including those related to transphobic and aphobic rhetoric. here's just one of maddie's delightful takes about asexual people.

throughout this fallout, zoey has consistently defended her friend and has taken no responsibility for any of the mean and downright hateful comments attributed to maddie's group, including her own. in zoey's eyes? this is an unprovoked hate campaign against moony, for no reason other than to tear an innocent fandom member down. she seems to have no comprehension of why deflecting any of this as "jokes" is not a real solution.

the aphobia

there are a lot more screenshots of maddie, both on discord and on her own tumblr, parroting back aphobic rhetoric under the guise of a joke, but here's zoey actively participating in one and even adding her own corrective rape joke to the mix. charming.

i don't think i need to explain why a character trying to "prove [the other] wrong" when it comes to their sexual orientation is an awful thing to say, something that has been lobbed at loads of queer people of all stripes for needing to be "fixed." and yes, this is corrective rape, just not in those words.

zoey's response

i don't think any apology would make all of the hurt go away, but simply acknowledging why this was a shitty thing to say and apologizing for it certainly wouldn't have hurt.

zoey has taken no responsibility for any of this, decrying any criticism as the work of "sjws" who can't take a joke. she claims that we lack the necessary context to understand why none of these statements are actually harmful, but will not provide any additional context should you ask.

in the comments of this post from phoen1xr0se, she brushes off the jokes as "out of context screenshots" and continuously doubles down on her defense of maddie and the joke. everyone who has a problem with this just needs to "block and move on."

again with the calling people sjws. very bizarre behavior. to respond to this specific point, just because zoey is on the acsexual spectrum does not excuse her hateful language. gay people can be homophobic, trans people can be transphobic, and no label guards anyone from prejudice.

the whole thing just seems exceedingly childish; no apology, no accountability, shifting the blame to anyone talking about it, and doubling down again and again.

conclusion

finally, a message for zoey, if you see this.

i loved your art. i still do! i think you do incredible work with these characters and have made some of my favorite pieces in the fandom.

as a fellow person on the ace spectrum, it broke my heart to read these comments. i wanted to believe you were someone who cared about other members of the community, but instead it looks like you'd rather defend a discord bullying circle than acknowledge your mistake. you can still change and learn from this; it won't make it go away, but it will show that you understand why people are hurt. i hope, even if it isn't now, you can look back on this someday and reform your behavior.

and to all other ace people and everyone else in the community who has been affected by this, i hope you find some peace today. you are so, so loved and perfect just the way you are. your identity is not something to be mocked, fixed, or hidden. even if there are some bad actors, the good omens fandom still has a place for you.

Intersex students deserve the right to play sports with their peers—like any other student. They deserve the fun, confidence, and friendship that school sports can provide. Two newly-introduced bills in Congress that would restrict sports access, H.R.28 and S.9, are questioning those rights. If the bills become law, some intersex students may lose access to school sports altogether.

Like many statewide bills, these bills also fail to understand that sex and gender are complex. H.R.28 and S.9 determine a student’s sex by “reproductive biology” and “genetics at birth” and demand that students participate in sports categories aligned with their sex. But it is unclear how these will be interpreted for intersex students, who have bodies that don’t fit neatly into “male” and “female” categories based on their biology and genetics.

Especially concerning are questions about how a student’s sex would be “verified,” and who decides whether a student is “female enough.” Any enforcement of these bills is incredibly threatening to the privacy and safety of student athletes, especially for those in K-12 grades. The risk of harassment and discomfort may only chase more intersex and transgender students out of sports.

We asked several interACT Youth who are current or former athletes in school to share their own stories, to be read in Congress. Read what they have to say, and contact your legislator to encourage them to vote no on H.R.28 and S.9.

the idea that restrooms, locker rooms, etc need to be single-sex spaces in order for women to be safe is patriarchy's way of signalling to men & boys that society doesn't expect them to behave themselves around women. it is directly antifeminist. it would be antifeminist even if trans people did not exist. a feminist society would demand that women should be safe in all spaces even when there are men there.
