i think a selfless bleeding heart hero archetype deserves his devotion to the world to be rivalled by the ferocity of someone’s devotion to him. as a treat. someone who says, “you’ve got the world sorted; i’ve got you.”

maybe someone more selfish and more cynical, who knows that no good deed goes unpunished, but simply says, “fine. if you want to do this, they’ll all have to get through me to get to you.” and is perhaps, incidentally, also more bloodthirsty, and happens to add, “so you’d better stay safe, or i won’t be held responsible for what happens to everyone in the vicinity next. make that your heroic priority.”

or maybe a partner in those heroics. a head clear with the same goals, and always a helping hand. putting themself like a shield between him and all dangers. someone who never lets him go cold or hungry or injured or scared or alone, not anymore, never left to make the sacrifice. someone who says, “i couldn’t do this without you. let me take care of you.”

or someone gentler, a lover of beautiful things, who demands from the world that he have what he wants and not just what he needs. “i bought this for you. i found this for you. i created this for you. i made a home for you. did you eat well on your adventures? i’ll cook for you.” a dozen good luck charms pressed from soft hands into calloused ones, all saying, “you take a part of me with you when you go. bring it safely back to me.”

it doesn’t really matter who they are or how they do it. i just need that man prioritised
