For the end of summer and to take a break from work worries, Dad had organized a barbecue in our backyard, inviting everyone: the Dagger Squad, Penny and Amelia, and even Hondo and Cyclone. Everyone was supposed to bring snacks and drinks, while Dad took charge of the meat. But he seemed to have gotten a little carried away, buying enough to feed every football team on the coast.
“Dad, are you feeding the Daggers or the entire Arctic Circle?” I asked as I arrived in the backyard with the cooler.
“Have you seen how those guys eat?” Dad replied, firing up the grill. “Just Rooster and Hangman alone will eat half of this. Speaking of Hangman…”
“Dad,” I sighed, placing my hands on my hips, “I’m not a little girl anymore. I’m too old for this.”
“No matter how old you are, you’ll always be my little girl,” Dad said, walking over and kissing my forehead. “Seresin better never hurt you, or I’ll have six confirmed kills in the air.”
“I think he got the message after all the extra drills you’ve made him do on base.”
“After seeing him make out with my daughter on my front porch, can you blame me?” he added, shaking his head. “I still need to have a serious talk with him.”
“Stop, Dad,” I replied, covering my face with my hand in embarrassment.
He just laughed as I walked back into the house. Moments later, I heard the doorbell. The gang was starting to arrive.
“I’m here!” Rooster shouted, barging in like he owned the place, with Phoenix and Payback right behind him.
“Come on in, guys. Dad’s out back,” I said, giving Nat a quick hug and putting the drinks in the fridge. “He bought enough meat to last us all fall.”
“Your old man promised to host the best barbecue of the summer,” Payback said, accepting a beer Rooster handed him.
We all headed to the backyard, and it quickly started filling up. Everyone had arrived—except Jake. I was starting to feel nervous, knowing it was only a matter of time before Rooster and Dad started teasing me.
“Punctuality doesn’t seem to be his strong suit,” Dad commented, handing me a plate of sausages.
“Come on, Dad, it’s just a regular Saturday, not a base training session,” I replied, pretending not to care. Hangman better show up soon.
“You’re wrong, sweetheart. It’s not just any Saturday,” Dad said, pulling up a chair and sitting beside me. “It’s the first time I’ve invited everyone to eat at my house. And if I’m not mistaken, Hangman is dating his trainer’s daughter.”
“I told you he’s just another idiot,” Rooster chimed in, sitting on my other side and trapping me between the two pilots.
“You too?” I asked, rolling my eyes.
“I’m just making sure no one breaks Baby Mav’s heart,” he replied in a baby voice, pinching my cheeks.
“Get off me,” I laughed, playfully pushing him away. Just then, the doorbell rang. Saved by the bell.
I rushed to the door and found Jake on the other side, flashing his charming smile. He was wearing khaki shorts, a casual navy blue shirt, his signature aviator sunglasses, and his hair was slightly messier than usual—no gel today.
“Hey, you, Seresin,” I greeted him with a quick kiss. “You had me worried. I thought you weren’t coming, and I’d have to endure Dad and Rooster lecturing me all afternoon.”
“I’d never stand you up, darling,” he said, placing one hand on my waist and pulling me closer. I noticed his other hand was behind his back, and next to him was a small cooler, likely filled with beer. “I was just running late picking these up for you.”
From behind his back, he revealed a beautiful bouquet of gardenias and lilies in various shades.
“They’re gorgeous,” I said, taking them in my hands. “Thank you, honey. You didn’t have to.”
This time, he placed both hands on my hips, rubbing them affectionately, and pulled me into a tender yet passionate kiss. We were interrupted by a fake cough behind me.
“Watch those hands, Seresin,” Dad said, standing there with Rooster, both wearing their overprotective hawk stares.
“You’re late, Bagman,” Rooster added, stepping forward to grab the cooler from the ground.
“Damn, Chicken, you’re annoying even off duty,” Jake sighed, shaking his head and guiding me inside the house, his hand never leaving my waist while he used the other to close the door. As we walked through the kitchen, I quickly placed the flowers in a vase with fresh water.
“Thanks for the invite, Mav,” Jake said, smiling politely.
“All pilots are welcome here,” Dad replied with a nod toward the backyard, “but how you treat my daughter will determine how welcome you really are. Don’t forget who’s in charge.”
“You have my word, Mav. I only have the best intentions…” Jake started, but I quickly cut him off.
“Enough, both of you. This is so embarrassing,” I muttered, shaking my head at them. “Let’s just eat before the food gets cold.”
“Lead the way, my lady,” Jake said with a tight-lipped smile, walking behind me while Dad chuckled, crossing his arms.

New Year’s Promise
warning: alcohol consumption, pet names, kissing and fluff
a/n: ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LENGUAGE so feel free to correct me if there’s anything wrong :)
masterlist || request’s are open
It was New Year’s morning, and Jake and I were doing some last-minute shopping. The supermarket was packed, the lines were endless, and there was barely enough room to maneuver the cart through the aisles.
“I told you we shouldn’t leave everything for the last minute,” I said to Jake as I steered the cart toward the wine and liquor aisle.
“Relax, bunny,” he said, placing his hands on my shoulders and giving them a little massage. “We still have a few hours before the year ends.”
“I know, Jake,” I sighed, “but I still have to make the lemon pie, you promised Payback you’d do your barbecue ribs, we need to shower, I still don’t know what outfit I’m wearing, I have to do my makeup, get ready…”
“Hey, stop. Calm down,” the blonde interrupted, halting the cart and pressing a kiss to my forehead. “Everything will be ready in time, and it doesn’t matter what you wear. You’re beautiful, babe.”
“Jake, I’m serious. You know how stressful this time of year is,” I added, leaning against his chest and inhaling his delicious cologne.
“Everything will be perfect. Besides, it’s just the guys. We see them practically every day,” he said, positioning himself behind me, his chest pressing against my back as he took control of the cart, and we started walking again.
The Dagger Squad only had a few days off, so they had planned the New Year’s dinner at Payback’s house with their respective partners. Nat and Bradley would be going together (they were finally accepting their feelings for each other), Fanboy would bring his wife and their little daughter, Bob and Coyote would probably show up solo unless they found a last-minute date, and then there was Jake and me.
“Here it is, exactly what I wanted,” Jake said, grabbing a few bottles of champagne off the shelf.
“Very classy, Mr. Seresin,” I laughed, glancing at the other bottles and pointing to some tequila. “We should grab a few of these too.”
“Planning to get wild tonight, darling?” my boyfriend teased, grabbing three bottles of tequila.
“Maybe, to ring in the New Year in the best mood,” I shrugged and continued walking down the aisle.
“So my New Year’s kiss will taste like tequila?”
“Probably…” I leaned in to give him a quick kiss on the lips and kept walking with Jake following behind, pushing the cart.
After finishing our shopping, we got back to his apartment and headed into the kitchen to prepare our dishes. Everything felt so natural; Jake and I looked like an old married couple cooking together, with a couple of beers open and jazz playing softly in the background.
“I was thinking…” my boyfriend started, washing the dirty dishes.
“About leaving the kitchen a mess?” I joked, laughing as I placed the lemon pie in the freezer.
“No!” he replied, laughing too. “I mean this—doing everyday things like grocery shopping and cooking together. Home stuff.”
“Babe, we already do home stuff,” I said, walking over to him as he leaned against the kitchen counter. Jake gently placed his hands on my hips and pulled me closer.
“I know, but I’d like it if you didn’t have to leave anymore—no more going back and forth to your apartment,” he added, kissing me softly.
“But I practically live here.”
“Then we should make it official. Move in with me,” he smiled, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear. God, this man had me wrapped around his finger.
“I don’t know, Jake. We’ve only been together a few months…”
“Six months have been more than enough to know I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” the blonde said, cupping my face and pulling me into a deep kiss. Even though I’d kissed him a million times, every time his lips met mine, I felt butterflies as if it were the first time. “Tell me you’ll at least think about it this time.”
“Alright, I’ll think about it,” I replied, kissing him again and smiling mid-kiss. Jake Seresin had been insisting for over two weeks that I should move in with him. It would make it easier for us to spend time together when he wasn’t working—no more late-night trips back to my place or rushing out at dawn so one of us could shower and get ready for work.
“It’s time to shower, Lieutenant,” I teased.
“My favorite part of the day,” my boyfriend cheered, guiding me to his bathroom with both hands on my waist. If we wanted to make it to dinner on time, he’d better behave…
Later, at Payback’s house, we were all gathered, laughing at the stories the guys shared about their time before Top Gun. One of Jake’s hands rested on my thigh, occasionally giving it a gentle squeeze or rubbing his thumb affectionately. After a few glasses of champagne and half a bottle of tequila, I was feeling a little tipsy but having a great time.
“Everything okay?” Jake asked, leaning in to kiss my temple.
“Everything’s perfect, Mr. Seresin,” I teased, playfully rubbing my nose against his chin.
“So, guys, what are your New Year’s resolutions?” Phoenix asked, taking a sip from her glass.
“To be the best in the squad and finally beat Hangman,” Coyote said, grabbing a piece of lasagna Bradley had made.
“In your dreams, buddy,” my man replied, wrapping an arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer.
“What about you, Bagman?” Rooster asked, mimicking his action by wrapping an arm around Nat.
“Well, considering I’m already the best, my first resolution is to convince this gorgeous lady to move in with me,” he said, looking at me tenderly. “And who knows? Maybe there’ll be a future Mrs. Seresin.”
Everyone laughed excitedly, and I felt my cheeks flush.
“I can’t wait to meet her,” I joked, playfully hitting his chest. “I didn’t know you’d already found my replacement.”
“Never, my love,” he replied, kissing me softly. We both laughed mid-kiss and pulled apart when Rooster whistled.
“Get a room,” he teased, pretending to gag.
“It’s almost midnight!” Bob announced, and we all gathered around the TV to watch the New Year’s special.
“10, 9…” we all counted.
“You know I meant what I said, right?” Jake murmured, placing his hands on my waist as if to keep me from running away. “I want to spend the rest of my life with you, darling.”
“8, 7…”
“Are you serious?” I asked nervously, laughing. I wasn’t sure if it was the drinks or the way he was looking at me, but I felt my entire body trembling under his gaze.
“6, 5, 4…”
“I’ve never been more serious,” the blonde added, his eyes shining with emotion.
“3, 2, 1… Happy New Year!” we all shouted, and without hesitation, Jake pulled me into a kiss as if there were no tomorrow. His lips felt so good against mine, mixing with the taste of tequila.
“Yes,” I said once we pulled apart, breathless. I wrapped my arms around his neck and leaned closer to him (if that were even possible).
“Yes?” he asked, studying my face with excitement.
“Yes, I want to move in with you. And who knows? Maybe someday I’ll become Mrs. Seresin,” I replied. Within seconds, Jake was kissing me again, and in that moment, it felt like everything else disappeared around us. It was just Jake and me in our little bubble.
“God, you don’t know how happy you make me, woman,” my boyfriend said with a lovestruck smile. “By the end of the year, you’ll have a big diamond on that beautiful finger of yours. That’s a promise.”

Rain Kisses
warning: none, just kissing.
a/n: ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LENGUAGE, so feel free to correct me if there’s anything wrong :)
masterlist || request’s are open
READERS’S POV:
“So… you’ve been going out with Hangman”, Penny teased me while we were getting ready for the bar to open on a few hours.
“In my defense, he’s proven he’s not like the others,” I said, laughing like a fool as memories of our last dates came flooding back.
“And what does your dad think about all this?” she asked with a sly grin.
“Come on, Pen,” I replied, rolling my eyes. “I’m an adult now. I don’t need my dad’s permission to date whoever I want.”
“You know that’s not what I meant,” she said, laughing. “Your dad can’t really complain, considering he used to sneak into my room through the window back in the day.”
We both burst out laughing.
“Oh, God, Penny, I don’t want to imagine my dad like that,” I groaned, covering my eyes. “I just hope Hangman doesn’t open his big mouth and say something stupid that’ll get him grounded—or worse, punched by Rooster.”
—————————————-
JAKE’S POV
It had been two days since I last saw Y/N because of work, and I realized something: damn, I missed her. This girl was special.
“Excited to see your girl tonight, Romeo?” Coyote teased as we changed in the locker room.
“More than you know,” I admitted, sounding like some high school kid with his first crush.
“So it’s true, Hangman?” Phoenix chimed in, joining the conversation. “You’ve got the guts to date the boss’s daughter, even with Rooster as her big brother?”
“For God’s sake, it’s not like I’m scared of Chicken,” I said, laughing as I stuffed my dirty clothes into my duffel bag.
“And what does the boss think about all this?” Bob added, sitting on the bench.
“Come on, Bob, we’re not in high school anymore,” Coyote interjected. “I’ll just say it: Hangman hit the jackpot.”
Coyote and Fanboy started clapping like the idiots they were.
“So, how is she, you know, in…?” Fanboy began, smirking like a teenager.
“Watch your mouth, Seresin,” Rooster shouted from across the locker room.
“Relax, Tiger,” Phoenix said quickly. “If she’s Maverick’s daughter, there’s no way she’d let some guy like Bagman get in her pants.”
“I haven’t even kissed her yet,” I admitted with a sigh, slamming my locker shut.
“No way,” Rooster laughed, crossing his arms. “That’s my girl.”
“Not your girl, Chicken,” I corrected. “She’s mine. She just doesn’t know it yet.”
——————————————
READER’S POV
Friday night, the Hard Deck was packed. I was a little disappointed that the Dagger Squad hadn’t shown up yet. I kept busy serving drinks and passing out bottles of beer when someone called out to me from behind.
“Hey, Y/N,” it was Rooster with his ridiculous mustache.
“Hey, Roo,” I said, stepping out from behind the bar to hug him. “I missed you. Haven’t seen you around lately.”
“That’s because you’ve been busy with Bagman,” he teased, playfully nudging my shoulder. “I don’t know what you did, but you’ve got that idiot wrapped around your finger.”
“I hope you’re talking about me,” said a voice behind Rooster. “Because I hope I’m the only one you’re dating”
“Oh my God, Bagman, that’s the cheesiest line I’ve ever heard,” Rooster groaned, wrinkling his nose. “Let me know if he gets out of line, Y/N.”
“I will, Roo, don’t worry.” Bradley kissed my forehead before heading off to join the rest of the pilots.
“I hope you and Bradley are telling the truth and there’s nothing more between you two,” Jake said, taking my hand and kissing my knuckles—a gesture he was starting to make a habit.
“Ew, never,” I quickly said, ducking back behind the bar and handing him a beer. “Bradley’s not my type. Besides, I’m more into blondes.”
I leaned on the bar and winked at him.
“God, you’re amazing,” he said, grinning as he took a sip of his beer. “What time does your shift end?”
“Too bad for you, handsome, I’m staying late tonight.”
“No problem. I’ll wait,” he said charmingly, walking over to the pool table.
The rest of the night, I could feel his eyes on me, and every time I caught him staring, he’d smile like an idiot. But eventually, I lost sight of him. Past midnight, Penny let me off since the bar had started to clear out. I grabbed my things and, not seeing Jake or the rest of the Daggers, assumed they’d left. The night was cool, and it looked like it might rain. Great—no jacket or umbrella.
“Hey, you,” Jake’s voice came from where he was leaning against his truck. I jumped, startled, and he chuckled softly.
“God, you scared me,” I said, relieved. “I thought you’d left.”
“I told you I’d wait,” he said, draping his jacket over my shoulders. It smelled like his cologne. “Need a ride?”
“Are you my knight in shining armor?” I teased, looping my arm through his.
“Your carriage awaits, my princess,” he said with an exaggerated bow, opening the door for me—just in time, as the rain started to drizzle.
By the time we reached my house, it was pouring. I was definitely going to get soaked just stepping out of the truck.
“Thanks for the ride, Lieutenant,” I said, leaning in to kiss his cheek as I opened the door.
“Wait!” he said, quickly getting out and running around to my side.
“You’re going to get wet!” I laughed as he grabbed his jacket and held it over us. He took my hand, and we walked to the door, getting drenched anyway.
I slipped on a puddle near the steps, but Jake’s arm shot out, catching me around the waist. We both laughed, soaked to the bone. His hands stayed on my waist, and I wrapped mine around his neck. His eyes locked on mine, and then they dropped to my lips.
“Still want that goodnight kiss?” I asked, biting my lip.
“Hell, yeah,” he breathed.
Without hesitation, I pulled him down to me. His lips were soft, tasting faintly of beer, and fit perfectly against mine. One of his hands moved from my waist to cradle my neck, deepening the kiss.
We pulled apart for air, but he dove back in, kissing me more passionately this time. God, I really liked this man.
“Goodnight, Lieutenant,” came a voice from behind us. My dad stood in the doorway, arms crossed.
“Goodnight, sir,” Jake said quickly, stepping back and grabbing his jacket to drape it over me again.
“Hi, Dad. We were just…” I stammered, feeling like a teenager caught sneaking in.
“I’m going to pretend I didn’t see anything, but we’re having a serious conversation tomorrow, Seresin,” my dad said before going back inside.
“Should I be worried?” Jake asked nervously.
“Don’t worry. I’ll handle it,” I said, smiling like a fool.
I pulled him down for another kiss, his hands gently resting on my hips.
“Goodnight, handsome.”
“Sleep well, beautiful.”
He gave me a quick peck before heading back to his truck. I stayed at the door until he drove off, leaning against it with a ridiculous smile on my face.
“He’d better treat you right, kid,” my dad called from the kitchen.
“Here we go…” I sighed. I knew I was in for a lecture, but Jake—handsome, charming Hangman—was definitely worth it.

Jake “Hangman” Seresin x Reader
One… or a few more dates.
warnings: none, just Jake being a sweetheart.
summary: the first three dates
a/n: ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LENGUAGE, so feel free to correct me if there’s anything wrong :)
masterlist || request’s are open
First Date:
I was sitting in the passenger seat of Jake’s truck. We had just left the Italian restaurant where he took me for dinner. I couldn’t deny I was having a great time; the blonde was a total gentleman and incredibly handsome—and hot. We were listening to his country music playlist while he told me about his life before Top Gun.
“See? Letting me take you to dinner wasn’t such a bad idea,” he said, glancing over at me with a smile.
“I have to admit, you’re not the fool I thought you were,” I said, tucking a strand of hair behind my ear.
“I’m a lot more than what Chicken ‘Silly Mustache’ Bradshaw can tell you,” he added with a laugh. “Totally worth promising to cover his tab for the week in exchange for your number.”
We both laughed, and I shook my head.
“Oh, he’ll pay for it, trust me,” I said, grinning. “Bradley’s like the brother I never had. I’m glad he’s back. When we were kids, we’d spend summers together. His mom used to take us to the bay to teach us how to swim.”
“Good thing you like the beach because that’s where I’m planning to take you next time,” Jake said, adjusting his grip on the wheel.
“Who says there’ll be a next time?” I raised an eyebrow and crossed my arms.
“You didn’t think you’d get rid of me that easily, sweetheart. I’ve already got several plans for us.”
“Let me guess, taking me to the beach is part of your perfect plan to get into my pants?”
“Come on, I think I’ve already proven I’m more than that,” he said, faking offense. “Though, if it happens, I wouldn’t complain.”
I burst out laughing and playfully hit his chest.
“And what exactly are we going to do at the beach?” I asked.
“We could have a nice picnic, get some sun, and watch the sunset.”
“Who would’ve thought Hangman was a romantic?”
“There’s still a lot you don’t know about me, darlin’. And I’d love to know everything about you,” he said, flashing that damn gorgeous smile.
Second Date:
A few days after our dinner, Jake picked me up, fully prepared for our beach picnic. The day was perfect, and who would’ve thought the pilot could plan such a flawless picnic? He brought an umbrella, a blanket, burgers, fries, beers, and sodas.
We talked while we ate. Jake told me about his high school football games, and I shared stories about constantly changing schools because of my dad’s reassignments. Every time his hand brushed against mine, it felt like a jolt of electricity. It even seemed like he was hesitant to touch me, but through his sunglasses, I could catch him sneaking glances at my chest more than once.
After swimming for a while and competing to see who could find the most seashells, the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of purple and orange. It was breathtaking.
“So, what’s next?” I asked, taking a sip of my beer.
“Next what?” he asked, propping himself up on his elbows. His abs were even more defined, and I had to try hard not to stare.
“You said you had several plans for me,” I said, crossing my legs. “What’s next?”
“So, you do enjoy spending time with me,” he laughed, opening his beer. “Tell me where you want to go, and I’ll take you.”
“Even if I want you to take me up in your plane?” I teased.
“I think your dad would kill me,” he said, laughing and sitting up straight. “But I could take you somewhere similar.”
“Similar? Now I’m curious.”
The rest of the afternoon passed peacefully. We kept talking and getting to know each other. I could see him glancing at my lips, as if he wanted to kiss me—which, for the record, wouldn’t have been a bad idea.
“Thanks for everything, Jake. I really had a great time,” I said when we arrived at my house.
“The pleasure’s all mine, darlin’,” he replied, smiling. God, this man was charming. “Is it too soon to ask for a goodnight kiss?”
I smiled playfully, leaned in—he was standing a step below me—and kissed the corner of his lips, teasing him.
“Goodnight, Lieutenant.”
Third Date:
“So, this is your idea of something similar to flying?” I asked as he opened the door of his truck. We were at the pier fair, surrounded by the smell of popcorn and cotton candy, mixed with the music and the screams of people on the rides.
“Don’t tell me you don’t like amusement rides. The adrenaline, the screams, the laughs—it’s the best,” Jake said, gently placing a hand on my back as he guided me to the ticket booth. He bought two tickets before I could even pull out some cash.
“Seriously? You’re not going to let me pay for anything?” I asked as he handed the cashier his money.
“Wouldn’t be very gentlemanly of me,” he said, grinning.
The day at the fair was a blast. We went on almost every ride, played bumper cars, marbles, and paintball, and stuffed ourselves with popcorn, hot dogs, and cotton candy.
“Hold still, you’ve got…” Jake said, leaning in to wipe something off the corner of my lips with his thumb. “There. All set.”
God, this man was starting to get to me. I felt butterflies in my stomach every time he touched me.
“Thanks again for everything, Jake,” I said as we walked toward the exit, my shoulder brushing against his arm. He even had the perfect height. “I’ve had so much fun with you.”
“The pleasure’s all mine,” he replied, opening the truck door and helping me climb in.
The drive home was quiet but comforting. We listened to his country playlist until a Taylor Swift song came on.
“No way,” I said, laughing. “You like Taylor Swift?”
“I don’t know how that got in there,” he said, shaking his head and reaching for the console to change it.
“Don’t. Leave it,” I said, stopping his hand. “I like that song.”
Instead of pulling away, he took my hand and kissed my knuckles. And there were the butterflies again…
I could feel my cheeks heating up, and Jake seemed to notice too.
“Well, would you look at that? You’re blushing,” he teased.
“Stop,” I whispered, rolling my eyes and looking out the window.
“You’re really something, Y/N,” Jake added, placing his hand gently on my thigh and rubbing it affectionately before turning his eyes back to the road. Without thinking, I placed my hand over his, mirroring his gesture.
When we arrived at my house, he asked for a goodnight kiss again, and I repeated the same thing as the last time—kissing the corner of his lips.
“Goodnight, Jake.”
“Goodnight, darlin’.”

READER’S POV:
Being back home felt strange, like traveling back in time. I remembered how, when I was a kid, my dad and Uncle Goose would sit Bradley and me on the piano and play and sing for hours. Now, here I was, standing behind the bar helping Penny on a busy night.
The Hard Deck was packed—classic for a Friday night. The jukebox music blended with the chatter of the crowd. The place had been full of naval aviators for over an hour, most of them still in uniform, using it as a strategy to attract women. I recognized a few faces—besides Bradley’s—since I had snooped through my dad’s files on the pilots he’d be training.
“What do I have to do to get the pretty girl behind the bar to give me another round?” one of the pilots asked, leaning his elbow on the bar and placing his empty beer bottles in front of me.
“Maybe you just need to ask nicely,” I said with a smile, grabbing the bottles to swap them for fresh ones. His uniform tag read “Seresin”. He was one of my dad’s squadron members. I wouldn’t deny it—he was very attractive: blond, green eyes, and every bit the charming prince. “Here you go, handsome.”
“Thanks, sweetheart,” he said, taking the beers but staying put, leaning against the bar more comfortably. “And if I wanted your number, would I just have to ask nicely for that, too?”
“Is that the line you use on all the girls?” I teased, crossing my arms over my chest.
“You think I’m one of those guys?” he said, pretending to be offended as he took a sip of his beer, never breaking eye contact. “Ouch.”
“I know pilots. You all pretend to be charming and different from the rest,” I replied with a sigh, wiping the bar with a rag. “You think you’re irresistible and that every girl falls for you—even with a stupid mustache, like Rooster’s.”
He glanced over, laughing, and spotted Rooster playing pool with the other pilots.
“The problem is, you’ve only met Chicken. I’m way better than him,” he said, making me pause and lean on the bar in front of him. Bradley had already told me about him.
“You must be Bagman,” I said, laughing.
“Hangman, sweetheart,” he corrected instantly, winking. Okay, he was very attractive. “How do you know my callsign?”
“Oh, trust me, I know way more than you think,” I said, winking back before turning to serve some other guys who had come up to the bar for refills.
It took me about five minutes to serve everyone, and the whole time, I could feel his eyes on me as he sipped his beer, patiently waiting for me to finish.
“So, since you know who I am, maybe you could reconsider giving me your number,” he said, leaning closer from the other side of the bar.
“I don’t know. I don’t think you’re ready for it.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my dad walk in and head straight for the bar to take a seat.
“Hey, darlin’. You know my usual,” my dad said with a smile.
I started preparing his whiskey the way he liked it, aware that Hangman was still waiting at the bar.
“I think I’m more than ready. It’s not every day I meet a gorgeous girl like you,” Hangman said. “All I’m asking for is your number—or at least let me buy you a drink.”
I laughed, shaking my head. Poor guy had no idea what he was in for. I garnished my dad’s glass with a slice of lemon and set it in front of him.
“Thanks, sweetheart.”
“No problem, Dad,” I replied, turning to face the blond pilot with my arms crossed. He took a sip of his beer and nearly choked.
“Dad?” he asked, glancing between me and my father.
“Is there a problem, Lieutenant?” my dad asked, taking a sip of his drink.
“No, sir.”, he replied, pressing his lips together.
“Then you’d better keep your fake charm away from my daughter,” my dad added.
I burst out laughing and leaned over to swap out the pilot’s beer.
“I told you, you weren’t ready for my number,” I said with a smirk before walking away to serve someone else. After saying goodnight to my dad, Hangman finally moved over to the pool table where Rooster and the others were.
“Poor guy, Dad. You scared him,” I said, approaching my father.
“I don’t care. No one’s good enough for my little girl,” he said, rubbing my arm affectionately. “Besides, if he’s really interested, he’ll have to work for it.”
The rest of the night passed quietly, picking up glasses and serving drinks until Penny told me I could clock out. Every now and then, I caught the blond pilot glancing my way, and I couldn’t deny I felt a little disappointed when he backed off after realizing my dad would be his coach. Maybe he was a jerk, like Bradley said.
After saying goodbye to Penny and my dad, I grabbed my denim jacket and stepped out of the Hard Deck. My ears welcomed the silence after the noise inside. As I walked toward the street, I heard someone coming out behind me.
“Hey, wait,” Hangman called out. “Have you reconsidered giving me your number?”
“You never quit, do you?” I laughed, crossing my arms.
“Not when it comes to the prettiest girl in the bar,” he said, mimicking my stance and stepping closer.
“You don’t even know my name—and I don’t really know yours, either, Bagman.”
“Hangman. And it’s Jake,” he said, closing the distance between us and extending his hand.
“Nice to meet you, Jake,” I said, shaking his hand. Mine was noticeably smaller than his, but they fit perfectly.
“Now that we’re properly introduced…” he started, still holding my hand.
“If you figure out my name, maybe I’ll give you my number,” I teased, pulling my hand away. “Goodnight, Jake.”
I took a few steps away and glanced back at him. He stood there, shaking his head and laughing softly, hands on his hips.
“Hope you’re free tomorrow night, sweetheart,” he called out loud enough for me to hear as I walked away.
“We’ll see, Bagman,” I replied.

JAKE’S POV:
“Give me 200 more, Hangman,” Maverick shouted with a grin on his face, standing in front of me. This man was enjoying himself.
“What’s up with you, man?” Fanboy asked after finishing his push-ups. “Is it because of that girl last night? The one who didn’t give you her number?”
“She’s not just any girl, dude,” I replied between sets. “She’s Mav’s daughter.”
“No way,” my friend said, laughing. “Maverick’s daughter is what’s got you so distracted today?”
“Shut your mouth,” I muttered, noticing Rooster laughing at me from a distance.
By the end of the day’s training, we were all in the locker room, peeling off our flight suits. While everyone else was chatting about who should buy drinks tonight, I couldn’t stop thinking about her. Not just because I didn’t get her number—though, to be honest, that didn’t happen to me often—but because she was truly stunning. I knew that the more I saw her behind the Hard Deck bar, the more she’d catch my attention.
“So, Hangman… last night you met Daddy’s little girl,” Rooster teased as he pulled on a clean T-shirt, followed by one of his ridiculous Hawaiian shirts. “Must be the first girl who didn’t fall at your feet.”
“Don’t start, Chicken,” I shot back, slamming my locker shut and leaning against it, arms crossed. “I’m sure that happens to you all the time.”
“You wish,” he said. “At least I can call her whenever I want.”
Rooster closed his locker and started walking out of the room.
“Don’t you dare, Bradshaw. I saw her first,” I said, following after him.
“God, how old are you? Eight? What is this, ‘I saw her first’?”
“Shut up, will you?” I sighed. “I can’t deny I’ve been thinking about her all day, and I don’t even know her name. But you, my friend, are going to help me.”
I threw an arm around his shoulders playfully, and he shrugged me off, pushing me away.
“So now we’re friends?” he scoffed, crossing his arms. “Y/N would never go for you anyway.”
“Y/N,” I repeated, biting the inside of my cheek with a grin. “Even her name is cute.”
“She’s not going to be one of your one-night stands, got it, Bagman?” Rooster said, walking toward the exit again.
“Come on, Bradshaw, I just want to take her out to dinner,” I said, trailing after him.
“Why don’t you ask Mav for her number? I’m sure he’d be thrilled to give it to you.”
“Don’t be an idiot, Chicken. I’ll buy you a drink too if that’s what you want.”
Bradley let out a laugh, raising an eyebrow.
“You’ll buy all my drinks this week, and I’ll give you her number,” he said, challenging me.
“You’re insane. I’m not paying for all your drinking this week.”
“Then I’ll call her and ask her out myself,” he said, pulling out the keys to his old Bronco and heading toward it.
Was it worth paying this idiot for Y/N’s number? Even knowing she might turn me down again—and that her dad would punish me in every damn training session? Screw it. I’d take the risk.
“Deal,” I said, catching up to him at his truck.
“What?” Rooster asked, incredulous.
“I’ll cover your tab this week, as long as you give me her number and stay out of my way, Chicken.”
The idiot just laughed, pulling out his phone and typing on it. Seconds later, I got a notification—he’d sent me her contact info.
“Pleasure doing business with you, Bagman,” he said, climbing into his truck. “And just so you know, I wasn’t planning on asking her out. She’s like a sister to me, you idiot.”
“You’re an asshole, Bradshaw,” I shouted as he drove off.

READER’S POV:
I had just gotten out of the shower when my phone started ringing. “Unknown number.”
“Hello?” I answered, putting it on speaker while wrapping myself in a towel.
“Hi, Y/N,” said a voice on the other end. It was the blonde pilot from the Hard Deck.
“How did you get my number, Bagman?”
“It’s Jake to you, sweetheart,” he said. Even though I couldn’t see him, I knew he had that stupid grin on his face. “So, are you finally going to let me take you to dinner?”
“Don’t you ever get tired?” I asked, sitting on the edge of my bed.
“Not when it comes to the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.”
I laughed and stayed quiet for a few seconds.
“Pick me up in 30 minutes. I’ll send you the address,” I said, smiling.
“At your service, ma’am..” he replied, and I hung up.
It was just dinner with Hangman. What could possibly go wrong?
