John (sheepishly): Every alternate Arthur's right foot had a slightly deformed medial cuneiform

Predictions for when Arthur gets his new body:

- When they get separated, John gets pulled back to Hastur’s body which is aaaaaaaall the way back with Yorick.

- Arthur's new body is still blind because ✨spooky Dollmaker price✨or something. (Also meta-wise in order to keep the descriptive narrative style of Malevolent 🤣)

- Arthur now temporarily has Lilith in his head instead of John (or maybe even Arthur narrating to Lilith?) And then he’s got to make the trek back across the Dark World to Yorick & John.

- Arthur has long hair now, purely because the fields have been mentioned twice (?) and I think it would be funny.

- And he also stitches because I'm edgy and I felt like it. 🤣

imagine. you're a quiet gentle guy. you're dating the most gorgeous girl you've ever seen, the girl who you have been dreaming of for years. she's a sweet person despite her aloof facade. things are good and you really want this to work. you met her mom already but she seems a bit hesitant to take you to her dad's. she had issues understanding him before, but she loves him a lot, and she mentioned a couple times to you that there is a person in his father's life that he's been seeing for years and has helped him a lot. she seems to be grateful of his presence and that makes you want to meet him even more. finally, one day she decides it's time, she trusts you won't get weirded out, as if you ever would honestly. you're nervous but excited. determined to win them over. you go to her home and she leads you to the kitchen. sitting at the table are her father and... your fucking pet platypus.

Alright so I've spent the last almost half an hour finally sitting down to go through Krissociation (with the first almost ten minutes of that spent in complete rejection and disbelief, which made me realize a thing or two about me and my mindset. To unpack later) and a-dream-journalist here has managed to word more or less my own thoughts. I almost just rambled in tags but I want to make this more concise. I'm not making my own post cause I'll probably ditch it mid writing and I want to get this out, sorry not sorry.

I am too fond of the idea of "player possesion" for the same reasons as the asker and bc it feels like a natural pipeline to follow after Undertale (both as a game that came after UT but a concept that was born first). But BUT BUT!!! Looking at the idea of us "controlling Kris" through the lense of Krissociation now explains so many things would otherwise take a lot of leaps to explain in future chapters. The cage, the ch4 egg room, the narration, the Kris playing and not playing the piano timeline, Noelle's comments about Kris when they were younger on her blog, comments from Toriel and other people around town, even certain aspects of the Dark World, boom, now make sense!!!!!

If it were any other game, if it were any other creator, I would completely disregard the meta scenes and elements as purely metaphorical. But with Toby and with UT I just can't. Ideally, in my head, it's both. It's a representation or parallel of Kris and his mental state AND it's an extra metanarrative involving the player's involvement in the story, not as a completely separate unique demon-like entity but as a a player connecting with a videogame to play a role while that connection is diegetic to a part of the story, even if it's not the main one.

I'm not trying to change your own mind with this comment at all OP, don't take it like that. If you weren't so firm and loud about your reading they many of us would still be stuck looking for answers in the wrong direction. Thank you

Your Krisassociation reading is perhaps the ONLY reading of "there's no avatar-player metanarrative" that I can actually get behind because it acknowledges that there's a severe disconnect between Kris and their soul. Some people just reject the idea that there's any disconnect whatsoever, and those who don't reject it will make the argument that there's a hidden third entity also possessing Kris. The former looks to contradict the malicious compliance Kris has with some commands, and the other looks to be... just a little unnecessarily complicated. It's possession-ception over in third entity land it seems.

I'm still rather attached to player possession, make no mistake, largely due to Gaster's involvement in Deltarune and his apparent understanding to be a secret, unused video game character - I don't think the metafictional angle is going away anytime soon. But if Krisassociation is the truth, I'll still clap and say "absolute cinema" even if we weren't getting as meta as I suspected.

well it's still "meta" if you look at it from the angle of "kris's SOUL is a role being played on both the player's part and kris's part" — the sword route does a lot to quantify that for me — but yeah generally that's the idea. i just don't find the surface-level "player possession" reading at all compelling when i've long learned to seek out every metaphor for mental illness i can reasonably support with textual evidence, and the metanarrative being one that acts as a grander allegory for kris's fraught mental state is one that is far more compelling to me than trying to make the story about something it isn't, i.e. moralizing the control of a player character in a video game, i.e. ridiculous (particularly in the wake of undertale).
