QUESTION 2 — what would you be doing if you weren’t an idol/musician?

"ooh...." yumika hummed at the new question in front of her, her lips holding the 'o' shape moments after. "i'd probably be living in japan. to be honest, i'm not really sure what i'd be doing! before training, i didn't have a passion i could follow, since i'd gone back to japan only for school. in an ideal world, i would've probably been an actress! but, realistically, i'd probably be working in business."

yumika paused for a second, drumming her fingers on the wooden surface in front of her. "yeah, yeah. business."

QUESTION 10 — what are your top 5 favorite artists?

yumika perked up, lacing her fingers in excitement, a grin cracking across her face. the sound of her nails clicking against her phone screen can be heard as she furiously types in her phone password, turning her screen to reveal her spotify homepage. "other than etoile..." she winked playfully before returning the screen to her view, swiping aimlessly a couple times. "i've been listening to a lot of crescent! other than that, i've been obsessed with peek-a-boo by dandelion and, of course, everything made by my dear ellie! but..." she paused, glancing up mischeviously. "i've really been into instagram by rohan."

QUESTION 13 — are there any regrets you have about the path you’re on?

"oh, definitely not," she replied, bluntly, shaking her head firmly. "i'm not sure if i've really talked about this, but i'd found out about korea's idol industry through some posters i'd seen in japan! curiousity got the best of me, and the more i watched k-pop videos, the more i knew this is what i wanted to do. i haven't been more sure of anything ever in my life, and i'm so happy that i am where i am today!"

"i'm not sure if this is really a hidden talent, per se, but i can play the guitar! i used to play on and off when i was younger, and i'd picked it up again when i became a trainee!" she pursed her lips in thought, furrowing her brows. "other than that... i can do... this? with my hands?" holding both of her hands up, she contorted her fingers, folding them to appear like the head of a snake. "i don't know." she chuckled, her hands falling back into her lap.

QUESTION 26 — what’s your favorite way to spend the day off?

immediately knowing her response to this question, yumika giggled quietly, hiding her face from view. "sorry," she laughed, trying to collect herself. "this is going to sound so lame since this is pretty much my job, but i love to dance. to be honest, i can't really sit around for very long... i've always got to go somewhere, do something, and keep myself occupied! when i really need a relaxation day, i'll most likely start the day by waking up late." yumika paused for a short moment, wondering whether or not 9 a.m. is late by a normal standard, or if it's just her own. "then, i'll take a long, warm shower, and i'll do some skincare stuff, which i love, by the way," she gushed, " after all of my self-care 'activities' are done, i'll put on a sports bra, some sweatpants, and my sneakers and i'll head to the practice room! i'll normally learn other people's choreographies... maybe i can post a cover sometime..." she thought out loud. "anyway, i love spending time in the practice room, just dancing my heart out. i know, having a shower and then leaving to work out sounds like it defeats the purpose, but there's just something so relaxing about taking care of yourself in the morning! maybe that's just me, though." she shrugged, pursing her lips nonchalantly.

QUESTION 27 — what are the words that you’d like to hear right now, and from whom?

"oh, wow," yumika started, impressed at the question before her. "gosh, when i think about the answer to this question... the only person who comes to mind is my brother." she rested her elbows on the mahogany table in front of her, shrugging and raising her eyebrows. "he and i have been close since we were in kindergarten, give or take..."

yumika swung her legs under the desk in thought, wondering what specifically she'd like to hear from her brother. "he would..." she began, before trailing off. "he always had good words of encouragement for me. in fact, he's the first person who ever showed me support when it came to being an idol; i really wouldn't be here if it weren't for him believing in me. since we're so busy with our own responsibilities, i haven't been able to call him in a while... i'd really just like to hear about how he's doing and those same, old words of motivation he's always used to cheer me on."

QUESTION 9 — what do you see yourself doing in 10 years?

"uhh..." yumika drawled, mouth agape as she looked up at the popcorn ceiling, giving thought to her response. "first things first, i hope to still be promoting with etoile, and i hope we become as successful and close as possible! i'd like to, maybe, release some solo work, or..." she found her gaze returning to the ceiling. "ah! i'd like to work in yuseong as a dance instructor! or, maybe even judge in a survival show!"

she paused for a moment, her right hand tugging on the fabric of her left sleeve. nibbling on the skin of her bottom lip in thought, she wondered what else she could be missing; something felt absent from her answer as if she'd missed one of her own goals. i already said etoile, she thought, reminiscing over the answers she'd just given. mentioned being a dance instructor... my solo work... the survival show... a couple seconds of contemplation passed before the woman shot up in her seat, eyes wide with a small smile on her face. "ah, yes!" she clapped her hands gently and quietly, "my brother. he made a promise to me some time ago that he'd move to seoul to be closer to me. getting to be near my brother again is something i'm very much looking forward to.

QUESTION 11 — what was your favorite and least favorite comeback era?

yumika gasped at this question, setting her phone in her lap for a moment before slowly picking it up again, a wide-eyed expression on her face, her lips curling into a shy smile. "i have two answers for my favorite comeback," she admit, her small smile now cracking into a large grin. "i'll start with least favorite first. my least favorite comeback would probably have to be..." she dragged the last syllable, "bon bon chocolate." she pouted, knowing some of her fans would be upset by this answer. "even though the song was fun to perform, i found it really hard to match the edm energy when we were practicing! i did, though, really like the styling~!" she sang.

"as for favorite comebacks..." she paused mid-sentence, drumming her index fingers against the wooden table in front of her playfully. "fancy! i really, really liked the choreography, the styling, the mv, my lines, everything! it was such a pretty concept. i don't know if anyone remembers, but there's a part in the song that goes, like, 'what?'" yumika backs away from the table, swinging her right arm back gently and signing 'love' in asl near her hand, mimicking the choreography. "yeah, that part," she dropped her arms into her lap, letting her hands be engulfed by her oversized taupe knit sweater. "i just love that part. and i get to sing it at one point!"

yumika inched her chair towards the table again, sighing contentedly. "for my second favorite comeback, that would be dumhdurum!" she laughed, clasping her hands together and grinning excitedly soon after. "which, of course, will be out on the 15th! go check it out!"

a brief history

yumika’s story is something else. you can find a detailed version here, but, warning, it can be intense. if you intend to read it fully, cw for child verbal abuse.

yumika was born on a cold, rainy sapporo night to junichi and murasaki kawamoto. after six years in japan, her family decided to pack up and leave for the states, settling in irvine, california. this is how yumika gained her english proficiency.

initially not well off, her father struck it big when he created his own law firm, rocketing the family into riches. unfortunately, with money comes power, and it was quite clear how power rocked her father’s head. this caused some issues between her siblings and her parents, most notably her brother and her father.

yumika learned to distract herself from wash away her pain when she started participating in theater. there, she could expel her rawest emotions through a character and, boy, was she good at it.

as time elapsed and her brother left the country, the weight of the state of her family took a toll on her. yumika’s grades dropped, and her spark for the stage disappeared. angered by this, her father elected for her to return to japan to be ‘straightened up’, and her family agreed that she’d stay with her brother.

now, yumika’s closest anything is her brother. when she’d started living with him in southern japan, she’d started noticing billboards and posters advertising up-and-coming k-pop girl groups. when she’d approached him, admitting that being an idol was what she knew she wanted to do, he was hesitant. however, he noticed that the sparkle in her eye, the one that she’d previously lost at the hands of her father, had returned. in his heart, he understood that this was yumika’s calling, and to restrict her from this would be an act of his father. he agreed to let her audition, helping her in her preparation as much as he could. he would be as much of a father as he could be to the girl who never really had one.

when the day had come where she’d receive her yuseong decision, her brother clutched her palm as he opened her decision email for her while she covered her eyes with her other hand in anxiety. “kawamoto yumika, we are delighted to inform you...” was all he had read before yumika erupted out of her seat, enveloping her brother in the most loving embrace she’d ever given and received. that day was the first time yumika had burst into tears of joy.

her and her brother both decided to tell her father yumika was going to korea to attend a boarding school to, yet again, “straighten her out”. yumika waved her brother goodbye as she entered a seoul taxi, disappearing into a new bustling city.

get to know the 🦢 of etoile!

yumika is as ambiverted as an ambivert can be. whether she’s giving speeches, speaking her mind on variety shows, or meeting new people, she’s extremely interactive and will do her best to get to know the people around her! with this in mind, though, she does appreciate her own quiet time as well.

as you can probably tell from the title of this section, her representative emoji is the swan.

because yumika is from the states, she adopted an english name, erika. this is where her stage name rika comes from! (she heavily prefers yumika.)

yumika is a great listener, mainly due to her and her brother’s relationship. no one truly knows her as much as her brother, but you can take your shot!

there was a time where she’d slept around a bit with different people. 

she loves her fellow members of etoile. yumika clings to any family dynamic she can find.

she has a dog named latte! latte lives with her sister and parents in boston.

yumika does smoke and drink. while she does not overuse, she is known to light a cigarette when things get tough. she enjoys smoking one-on-one with someone else; she feels that that is the environment where she can truly get to know someone.

yumika is a perfectionist, and tends to feel shameful and may give up if she is not very good at something off the bat. that being said, she’s also very ambitious.

to her fans, yumika is known as a burst of proud energy, a caring soul. yumika is very aware that she is the “ face of the group ”, so she tries her best to maintain this image, even when she’s feeling less than ideal.
