My conduct this year landed me on Santa Claus's fabled and controversial "Kill-at-all-Costs" List. Turns out the reason the big man and his people don't exercise that option more often is that they really aren't good at following through on it. Well outside their core competency. He's delegated to the elves, and they've got this ingrained assembly-line mindset that doesn't translate at all to the adaptable and fluid mindset needed for siege breaking. They just haven't adjusted their playbook at all from when they're doing rote deliveries. Armed Elves have been rappelling down my chimney one at a time into the roaring fire I've kept going nonstop for the last week. They haven't even thought to try my front door yet. Whole house smells like peppermint, which it turns out is what burnt elf meat smells like. Thought I was being super clever putting cyanide-laced almond milk out with the cookies as a last line of defense, but none of them have made it even the scant few feet to the side table where that's sitting. At the rate things are going the real danger is that I'm gonna forget what I did with that and accidentally drink it myself while I'm watching the show

Once a little boy went to school. One morning The teacher said: “Today we are going to make a picture.” “Good!” thought the little boy. He liked to make all kinds; Lions and tigers, Chickens and cows, Trains and boats; And he took out his box of crayons And began to draw.
But the teacher said, “Wait!” “It is not time to begin!” And she waited until everyone looked ready. “Now,” said the teacher, “We are going to make flowers.” “Good!” thought the little boy, He liked to make beautiful ones With his pink and orange and blue crayons. But the teacher said “Wait!” “And I will show you how.” And it was red, with a green stem. “There,” said the teacher, “Now you may begin.”
The little boy looked at his teacher’s flower Then he looked at his own flower. He liked his flower better than the teacher’s But he did not say this. He just turned his paper over, And made a flower like the teacher’s. It was red, with a green stem.
On another day The teacher said: “Today we are going to make something with clay.” “Good!” thought the little boy; He liked clay. He could make all kinds of things with clay: Snakes and snowmen, Elephants and mice, Cars and trucks And he began to pull and pinch His ball of clay.
But the teacher said, “Wait!” “It is not time to begin!” And she waited until everyone looked ready. “Now,” said the teacher, “We are going to make a dish.” “Good!” thought the little boy, He liked to make dishes. And he began to make some That were all shapes and sizes.
But the teacher said “Wait!” “And I will show you how.” And she showed everyone how to make One deep dish. “There,” said the teacher, “Now you may begin.”
The little boy looked at the teacher’s dish; Then he looked at his own. He liked his better than the teacher’s But he did not say this. He just rolled his clay into a big ball again And made a dish like the teacher’s. It was a deep dish.
And pretty soon The little boy learned to wait, And to watch And to make things just like the teacher. And pretty soon He didn’t make things of his own anymore.
Then it happened That the little boy and his family Moved to another house, In another city, And the little boy Had to go to another school.
The teacher said: “Today we are going to make a picture.” “Good!” thought the little boy. And he waited for the teacher To tell what to do. But the teacher didn’t say anything. She just walked around the room.
When she came to the little boy She asked, “Don’t you want to make a picture?” “Yes,” said the little boy. “What are we going to make?” “I don’t know until you make it,” said the teacher. “How shall I make it?” asked the little boy. “Why, anyway you like,” said the teacher. “And any color?” asked the little boy. “Any color,” said the teacher. And he began to make a red flower with a green stem.

Writing high fantasy is harder for me than it used to be because I'll write "The door swung open" and I'll imagine some tumblr user with three different grad degrees in medieval history dunking on me with a 2,000-word post about how door hinges weren't invented until 1956 and before that they'd just smash them open with axes and rebuild them each time.

While I think it's reasonable for people to find this interaction fascinating and unusual, because it is. I also think it has to do with how little humans interact with sea beasts. And having learned more about morays specifically, I think they as a species have a tolerance interaction with other creatures, including relative discomfort. Despite being nocturnal, morays hunt collaboratively with diurnal groupers, and hunts are started by the grouper, who approaches the morays hide and basically wake it up, nodding in its face. (Literally) Given this, and their tolerance for cleaner species, I don't actually think it's unreasonable for a moray to, in an environment like an aquarium, fairly readily tolerate being handled, be made some what uncomfortable, be out during the day, etc. for another creature that it knows is safe to be around, probably associates with reliable food/ more successful hunting. And quite frankly being chill with the human gets it scritches, which seem to be one of humanities prime diplomatic tools when interacting with just about any other creature, be they sea beasts, land or air. (Of course don't just try this with wild morays obliviously, the diver clear has built up trust.) TLDR: While very fun to see, morays aren't as anti-social as all that, and despite their reclusive reputation, they are probably the most willing to engage with other species of anything in that tank.

As someone who's been vegetarian my whole life, the few times I've tried meat, (Typically accidentally,) it's been weird/gross. If I could get away with like just candies with gelatin in it and count that, I think I could take it, but otherwise 100k isn't enough for a lifetime commitment.

Why did you give the last of your food to that poorly disguised mimic? You were finally at peace with letting go, but now this odd thing won’t leave you alone and is even turning itself into various items in an attempt to aid you.

I was just thinking about this. And, as a 'Yank' living outside the US, I agree 99% of the way. I'm perfectly happy now in the winter to say yeah it's 0, 1, 2, etc degrees out. But, come summer when I'm cooking alive again, saying, "it's 40 degrees out" feels a lot less impactful than "It's over 100 degrees out"
(I get that this is still within the point of op's post)
That said: The world is burning! It's 100 freaking degrees out there! (My ideal temperature system is 0 is freezing and 100 is roughly body temp. It's perfect cause it's the best of both worlds and therefore worse for everyone.)
i think if yanks can't even recognise that the only reason they find farenheit intuitive is because they were raised with it, there's basically no chance of being able to get them to analyse all the other, more important implicit biases they've been raised with

[video description: a minute and a half sketchy animatic of a scene from Harrow The Ninth  book where Mercymorn hates everyone because they mockingly interpret her scribble of the Beast in not-beastly shapes. ]  I got procreate and I thought: what if I draw mercymorn like fifty times. and then i did. edit: audio is from the audiobook! voiced by Moira Quirk!
