Hello! Literary publicist/freelance editor here, and I can tell you that “The [blank] of [blank] and [blank]” is a two-fold trend. It has been a popular title format for YA fantasy for a very long while because it involves three keywords that evoke the essence of the story in one rhythmic phrase that can take up the entire cover and be striking and eye catching when designed with a fanciful font. Additionally, it has become even more popular in not only the YA realm but now adult as well because of the explosive success of the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series. ACOTAR is quite literally shouldering the bulk of genre publishing right now. Its sales numbers are astronomical and record-setting in both romance and fantasy categories. With insane success like that, YA authors tend to lean into it when drafting their own title in the query stage, and if they don’t, editors definitely suggest it, some more forcefully than others.
Now for my own WIP titles… I either know my title from the start because it’s so clear with the working summary, or I have absolutely zero ideas until it’s complete and I ask beta readers what they would suggest. While I heavily lean toward the latter cause I’m terrible with titles and subject lines in general, the WIP I’m currently focused on is
“Afterlife”
Probably
“The Land of Choice and Inconvenience” maybe
Okay now I am curious. 👀
How does everyone come up with titles for their work?
Do you have a go-to style, or is it more "vibes based" depending on the work?
this question is prompted by me wondering where the new publishing trend of what seems like a lot of unrelated book series having titles along the lines of
"The [blank] of [blank] and [blank]"
with me wondering where it came from, and if it is based off of one book series that everyone else is trying to copy, if its something publishers are pushing, or a mix of both.
so, as a fun little interactive post:
What's your current WIP document title,
Are you planning on changing the title after editing
what would the title be if you formatted it in "The [blank] of [blank] and [blank]" style?

When your simple fic breaches parameters and grows out of control and you start to wonder if you have a Real Story developing…
#erin wont shut up#genuinely though#this fic is turning into an actual story#it’s so much more than I bargained for#I do not mean to put fic down in any way whatsoever#fanfiction is 100% real storytelling#but I mean like this is becoming such a fully developed concept with multiple layers#that if I tweak it enough to divorce it from the source material after it’s done#I can workshop it in my writing groups and consider making it an original work#writeblr#am writing#adventures in fanfiction

writing advice for characters with a missing eye: dear God does losing an eyes function fuck up your neck. Ever since mine crapped out I've been slowly and unconsciously shifting towards holding my head at an angle to put the good eye closer to the center. and human necks. are not meant to accommodate that sorta thing.

I just really think the concepts of libraries and museums are neat. We, as humans, really said, "Let's create a place to learn freely." I think that's beautiful.

I wrote 3300 words today. Holy shit.
My hand is cramping so bad and it’s making me realize I’ve been sitting at my desk writing for nearly eight straight hours. I have no idea when my cat jumped on my lap, but she’s got eraser shavings all over her fur. Whoops.
