i saw! that is indeed what the nypd is reporting, i won't speculate on here why they are reporting that but i have my theories. here are today's (sat, dec 7) developments for those who are following:

nypd lost the suspect: cops think the shooter left nyc, possibly on an interstate bus from port authority. (source)

nationwide manhunt: the fbi's now involved, and the search has become a nationwide manhunt. authorities are using facial recognition software, dna analysis, and surveillance footage to track the suspect, who is believed to have traveled to atlanta.(source, source)

weapon used: the shooter used a rare gun, similar to a wwii spy pistol, indicating serious planning and possible professional skills. (source)

public city sentiment: new yorkers held a lookalike contest for the shooter, someone created a 'pov: taking out a ceo' spotify playlist, the hooded jacket and grey peak design backpack (like the suspect's) are both sold out online, "deny defend depose" is becoming a slogan, and people are calling for a 'v for vendetta'-style revolution.
