1979-1990 Anime Primer Windaria (1986)

Windaria takes place in a fantasy world where war between Itha, a rich and idyllic coastal nation, and Paro, a technologically advanced but poverty-stricken kingdom, is imminent. A peaceful valley is caught between the two, and its people can only look to the ancient tree of Windaria for protection. Izu, a farmer from the valley, is drawn away from his simple life and his wife Marin by promises of wartime riches and glory. Meanwhile, Princess Ahnas of Itha and Prince Jil of Paros do their best to stop the hostilities, but their love for each other may not be enough to dissuade their parents. Despite the vibrant colors and soft look of Mutsumi Inomata’s (Leda: The Fantastic Adventures of Yohko, Tales of Destiny) character designs, Windaria takes a hard and unforgiving look at war and the folly of the people who engage in it. The sympathetic leads, uniquely realized world, gorgeous artistry and the beautiful soundtrack (which features early work by singer Akino Arai) compels to viewer to follow the film to its devastating conclusion.
