The expression on her face was one of being startled, mixed with the joy of it hopefully clicking in his mind. A weird little quirky grin and a mild surprise in her eyes. She lifted her hand up between them, snickering near her drink and almost spilling it. “I don’t know him personally. But I do work in mysterious ways, and it will take much to learn my secrets, Tenji-kun. Some stay under lock and key. He is an interesting fellow to speak with, I will say.”
Reaching out she snatched a bit of the chicken dish to nibble on, a look of pride on her face as she swirled her drink, amused at her dear friend. “I loved Kamen Rider since I was a kid, and I remembered something in one of our passing conversations. Work provided me the chance to rub elbows with some and- well, who’s to say I can’t share in that geeky merriment, hm?” Riley rested her head on her hand, laughing softly. “Not going to lie, I wasn’t expecting to break you because of it.” Yes she was. That was an absolutely lie, and she was LIVING for this.
Mouth still hanging open as if he were catching flies, Tenji just stared at Riley when she refused to explain her methods. It was clear from his face that he was struggling to process this.
“Oh my god,” he repeated dumbly, re-reading the letter with a shake of his head. “That’s literally mental.” Whilst Tenji didn’t think that most of his persona in the club was an act, this made it all too clear that there was a small boy within who was just barely scraping through life acting like a grown-up. He reached for his champagne, sipping at it as he looked back up at her. “Hhhhow did you...” Crazy.
“I think I love you.”

“Hehe, thank you!” Haru was quite happy that Tenji didn’t seem to mind. She suddenly felt a little embarrassed when Tenji seemed to sound intrigued after she mentioned having people who did the shopping for her. “Ah, well, my father owns a company so…but it’s not really a big deal!” at least Haru was trying to play it down anyway. It was nice to feel normal every once in awhile.
After Tenji put his information she took her phone back and placed it back into her bag, “Thank you very much! I’ll be sure to message you. Lately I haven’t been getting much sleep either, maybe we can be texting buddies at night!”
“Damn though, do you have like... servants and stuff?? Like. in your house?” As much as Tenji enjoyed shopping, he couldn’t deny that he was more than a little jealous if that were the case.
“Yeah, let’s do it!” Moving up a few places when the queue shifted forward, Tenji tucked his thumbs into his pockets, swinging his hips lazily. “So what’re you doing instead of sleeping?” He grinned cheekily. “And obviously, texting me from now on.”

“Sure, I wouldn’t mind that. I’m always curious to check out the clubs around here. Heh, they might take me more seriously now, but I’ll show you how you can get them to take you seriously too.” Akiyama nodded. He could understand that maybe because of Tenji’s age people might not take him as seriously, yet, but Tenji just needed to learn to present himself in a way to demand respect without seeming rude about it.
“I think they did. Then let’s get you a job with Ageha. I’m sure I could put in a good word for you.” Akiyama didn’t really mind if that’s what Tenji had really wanted. “Heh, it’s crazy that they haven’t put you on one of those posters yet. I think you’d look really good on one. Do you have any head shots? Might help them faster, it’ll let them visualize what you look like on an Ad.”
He chuckled at Tenji’s enthusiasm regarding Elise.
“I can see you’re very passionate and determined. That’s good.” Akiyama smiled. “Haha, that’s the only condition though, you can’t date any of the girls! Makes it a lot harder, doesn’t it? Oh and don’t think that I won’t find out about it. You’ve gotta stay focused on the job… Don’t let girls distract you.”
“Awesome! When do we start? Can you really teach me??” That sounded like the kind of deal Tenji couldn’t refuse. He’d been lucky back in Yokohama, had fallen into a job where he had been immediately valued and recommended above all others. He had taken Hamamoto’s praise and promotion without thinking about it much, but Kamurocho was teaching him that getting to the top was a lot harder with this kind of competition. He had been comfortable in Yokohama, but in Kamurocho he was a small fish in a very big pond.
“You could do that?? Really??” Ageha was a ticket to the top - Tenji was convinced of it. “I know, right! I belong up there in lights!! Yeah yeah, of course I have headshots!” Tenji was already pulling out his phone, quick to show off one of his pictures in the cracked LCD - it was set as his homescreen. “But, I mean, if you know somebody who does headshots, I wouldn’t mind a new set - I lost a bit of weight since then.” He poked at one of his cheeks, supple skin clinging to bone. Granted, it hadn’t been out of choice so much as necessity, and his skin had suffered a bit in the process, but he was confident that it was all up from here on out.
“Aw whaaaaat? That’s not fair,” he laughed, pouting at Akiyama’s conditions. “Not even a couple of girls??” That meant Elise was probably off the list, as much as he kind of wanted to see how far he could strut in a hostess’ shoes.

Sayuki did indeed protest at first. But seeing as he wasn’t going to take no for an answer, she pouted at him. She was being playful with it and then poked his side like she did when they were kids.
“Stubborn boy,” she said.
There were things that happened in her life and she was sure there were things that happened to him. But to her, it almost felt like they were best friends this whole time. As they walked, she chatted with him about the little things. She had to wring her hair out at some point and put it back in a ponytail, knowing it was going to get a little frizzy when it dried out.
Grinning, Tenji squirmed under Sayuki’s teasing, nudging her gently back as they walked.
“Here it is.” He slid the door open and gestured her in ahead of him, shaking out the umbrella and dropping it in the basket by the door. “Excuse us, can we get one of the back tables?” Waving cheerily to the staff, the host put his hands on Sayuki’s shoulders and steered her toward the kotatsu at the back. “Cute place, huh?”
Glad to be able to take off his wet shoes, Tenji lifted the blankets at the edge of the heated table and slithered his legs into the well beneath with a contented sigh.
“So when were you gunna tell me you lived so close by, huh?? And gimme your phone number because I lost my old phone like half a year ago.” Jimmying the excessively decorated case out of his back pocket, Tenji slid his phone over to her, cracked screen and all. Said lost phone probably had a whole lot more to do with it than because either of them were keeping secrets from the other.

“Uh, no sir. I told you to pick two so any of them goes!” Kanae plafully scolds although his politeness is appreciated. “Where we get them? Ooh that’s a hard one. Pretty much it boils down to mother having a terrible shopping addiction.” Like mother like daughter. It’s the way they bonded though. She can’t count the number of hours they’ve put in digging through what most would consider junk or searching from store to store in search of the right pieces. “We get them from flea markets, thrift stores, and people coming in to sell their old stuff. Oh man and then a few years ago she discovered the joy of online shopping.” Not to mention the few underground markets she and her mother had a tendency to visit and vend at. But no matter how odd or expensive the items, her mother always seemed so lucky in turning a profit from them.
"Bikinis? Wow I…would have not thought about that?“ She laughs, brows furrowing slightly. Or maybe the just doesn’t recall. The idea of it sounds WILD, or at least a bit more wild than she’s use to. "Yeah, yeah send me some pics. I might just borrow the hat too. I’d be a bit hesitant to wear something too revealing because of my tattoos.” Flamboyant fashions aside, she doesn’t mind the bit of judgement she might or might not get for them. Most of the time at least.
A mischievous though curious look paints her features. “Which Kouhai was it? Is it one I’ve met before?”
Tenji puffed out his cheeks in a playful expression of disbelief, picking out a ring which looked to be fashioned after a scarab beetle with oil-coated wings. Thumbing off one of the rings he was already wearing, he tried it on, turning it in the light with a grin. The shifting colours of the stained metal weren’t dissimilar to those of the hummingbird pendant which thudded against his sternum.
“Well if you insist... how about this one?” Satisfied by the fit, he considered the rest with a thoughtful chirrup. “They’re all really cool though - I’m impressed! You both have really good taste.” He picked up another, inlaid with red stones, and promptly put it down again, skimming for something cast in darker metal.
“Really? At a foam party? I wouldn’t worry about it too much - a lot of girls in these places have tattoos. Though I guess probably western style, rather than Japanese.” He clicked his tongue. “You don’t have to wear one, but... yeah, you’re gunna get wet whatever you choose.” The host grinned, thumbing through his phone before showing a photo of two girls with their arms around one another. “Lotsa girls wear a bikini with a white shirt over it. Like this.”
When she asked after his kouhai, Tenji poked the tip of his tongue out at her playfully.
“M’not telling cus you’ll tease me about it too! And before you ask, no, it wasn’t Arata.” Which meant that the answer was yes, and that it was either the sleepy-looking Sora or aggressively adorable Masa.

Dojima couldn’t help but raise a brow at the question, was he really so bold to ask? Well, he didn’t really have a reason to lie or anything. “I’m in my forties.” Well, maybe now hearing his out aloud made him feel it all of a sudden and now there was a lower back pain he hadn’t noticed before. He really needed to learn to start taking it easy.
He chuckled, “Do you think maybe the people around here don’t like you because they’re jealous that you’ve probably had more of a life experience than they have? So many people around here know they’re going to be stuck here for life, but you’ve already lived out in the big city.” it was nice that Tenji had gone out to do that even if he had been back now to help his dad out. Dojima could already tell that Tenji probably wouldn’t stay in Inaba forever though. “Don’t worry, you’ll young. You’ll meet someone eventually. Probably best if you don’t rush it.” he smiled although his look turned somber when the other asked if he was married. “Yeah. Well, I was.” Dojima had a bad habit of still wearing his ring. “She, uh, died in an accident.”
“Ohh, really??” Tenji did his best not to look too surprised one way or the other, quick to press his luck with more personal questions. “How long have you lived in Inaba? Have you always been here?”
“No, they like me!” The host looked first alarmed and then wounded. “Everybody likes me!” He scratched his bony chest weakly, puffing out his cheeks in a pout as if the contrary were an impossible thought. “I just mean they aren’t like me. Unless- do you think they don’t like me for real?” Wide eyes turned on the detective in a panic - one which only heightened when Dojima spoke of his wife.
“Oh- oh, shit I’m sorry.” Something about being back in Inaba stole all of the cool out of the cool cat host. Or perhaps he’d never been cool at all. Tenji sank down a little in his seat with a weak sigh. “Sorry, I didn’t know. No wonder nobody likes me.” Trust Tenji to make it all about himself.

How could she not notice him? Even if he did look different from before, she could still tell. There was something about him that stuck out more than anyone else. At the comment of her looking different, too, she looked at him with confusion before remembering her hair. “Oh, yeah. I guess,” she laughed softly. She supposed she was a lot skinnier as well.
The invitation to get food with him had her surprised. “Um! Sure!” she said. She had enough money left over for a meal. Seeing as she didn’t eat lunch. SHe was too much of a study worm.
She looked at herself, forgetting she was wet. Then she put on that pretend smile she had practiced for so long, it seemed real to the people that didn’t know her well enough. “Yeah. I…just forgot an umbrella.” She tucked her hair behind her ear and positioned her bag on her shoulder for a better grip. “Is there anything good around here?”
Tenji frowned - she could smile sweetly at him all she liked, but there was no way he could believe that she was fine just standing there soaked to the skin.
“Yeah, loads - what kinda food do you like? There’s a pretty neat place which does a homemade tonkotsu ramen back that way.” The host pointed back the direction he had come, combing long fingers back through messy curls. More important than the food, however, they had a row of kotatsu sunk into the raised seating area along the back wall, and Sayuki looked as though she could do with some warming up.
“C’mon, my treat.” Despite Sayuki’s claims to the contrary, he resolutely kept the clear umbrella over her head as he gestured for the two of them to walk. “Coming?”

Sayuki turned around slowly to look at him so that he could see her face. She was soaked to the bone but it was like she wasn’t even fazed by it. She looked not much different from when she was a kid. Her brown hair got a little lighter and dark purple was woven into the tips. But her eyes were still that warm milk chocolate brown.
The trance she was in was broken when he got closer. She took a few steps back, a blush crawling across her face.
“Uh, I, uh. I live here now. I just got off of school,” she answered. She wanted to hug her really badly. But she didn’t know how he would take it. So she stuck with the proper greeting, “Wh-What are you doing here?”
“Surprised you recognised me,” the host laughed, holding out the umbrella further when she seemed to recoil a little from him - his hair was already ruined, dribbles of fake tan colouring the neck of his shirt, a few more raindrops wouldn’t make much difference. Given the bleached hair, blue contacts and tanned skin, one could be forgiven for thinking Tenji had taken part in some kind of witness protection program, so different was he to the dark-eyed, dark-haired kid he had been when they first met. “But you look different too!”
Watching Sayuki curiously, Tenji’s mouth made the shapes of words which didn’t come out, tilting his head. “Really?? Man! I was meant to be working but they scheduled too many people so I was gunna head home -- wanna go get some food or something? Hey, um- are you okay? I mean, you’re drenched...”

Akiyama didn’t entirely agree with this marketing strategy, but it was sure a good way to bring in business for all the businesses that were involved in this little scheme. It had been perfectly legal too, he was sure all the terms and conditions were in some tiny font that no one would be able to read without a microscope. “You’re probably right. I doubt they would spend much money on a free gift especially if their goal is to collectively drain their customers.”
Akiyama shook his head, but he understood the marketing strategy. It was a damn good one actually, but he wouldn’t feel right about it.
“I might do it just to see what the free gift is. I’m curious to see if this is all really worth it.” Akiyama chuckled when Tenji had asked if he had been into marketing, in a way he supposed he was but only for his own business. “I’m actually a moneylender, but I do own a hostess club so I’m always interested in these things.”
“Nothing’s ever really free is it,” Tenji chuckled with a shrug. “But I guess if people are happy to pay to play the game, then... oh wait! I bet it’s one of those fancy cocktails like those three girls have over there!” The pretty drinks stood out in stark relief against the snack bar’s otherwise shabby chic typical of such venues.
“For real??” The young man let out a burst of surprised laughter. “Are you eight-thousand-yen-worth of curious?” A moneylender, huh? No surprise that he had cash to burn if that was the case. “Oh really?? I just moved up from the bay so I’m still finding my feet round here - you said you own a hostess club?? Do you manage it too??”
For the first time, he noticed Akiyama’s watch - very big and bold and gold. Should’ve guessed the guy had cash to splash. Tenji turned the big ring on his own middle finger, leaning eagerly forward to hear the older man’s story. For all his other faults and foibles, the host could smell money.

If there was one thing guaranteed to make Tenji miserable, it was rain, and oh boy did Tokyo know how to do it well. The transparent umbrella over his head may as well have not been there - rainwater splashed up his pale suit trousers and turned masterfully coiffed hair into a mess of frazzled curls which stuck to his neck and left him both cold and fed up. Add that to being sent home from work early due to shallow footfall and he was all set up to just slink home into bed and demand a do-over.
Why even bother putting him on a shift if he wasn’t wanted?? One hand jammed into his pocket, he wasn’t paying much attention to where he was going, and he might’ve even missed the voice which spoke his name were it not for the changing of traffic lights up ahead.
Frowning, the host backtracked curiously on cuban heels to find a familiar face blinking back at him. Head on one side, blue eyes flickered between each of hers with his lips pursed as he tried to figure out who she was and why she knew his name. A customer? A classmate...? Suddenly, the realisation came all at once.
“... Sayu-chan!?” Disbelief turned to delight as he lifted his umbrella higher so that it could shelter them both. “What’re you doing here??”
Random starter for @hachidorinoko
Tenji. A name that had been on her mind for a very long time. Or rather it was a boy that had been on her mind for a long time. He stuck out in her mind like a light in the darkness. Besides her brother, he was the only one that ever treated her like a person.
But that was back when she was a kid. A young kid. She had hoped to see him at least once more but that never happened. She sighed heavily as she walked home in the rain. She would be lying to herself if she denied missing him. SHe looked up to see where she was going, a familiar face came into view. However, she didn’t recognize it at first, only excusing herself from his path. Then she stopped and gasped loudly.
“T-Tenji?” she said out loud without turning around.

“Tha’ asshole in there!” Ryuji shouted, “He does i’ evry sin’le time! An’ not…not jus’one!”
Ryuji was obviously angry about it. He huffed out more anger before wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. However, he didn’t take it away from his lips. The look in his eyes seemed to glaze over, looking like some sick person. He leaned over a bit with a groan. He didn’t drink like this very much. So he didn’t have to usually hold this much down.
He was able to compose himself but he still leaned over with his hands on his knees to try and calm the dizziness that was starting to happen. “At least…I got his name,” he said as he stood up straight. UNfortunately it was too fast and the dizziness made him black out and fall into the security dog, completely unconscious.
Tenji yelped, stumbling back against the stairway railing as he tried to catch the man. Managing to keep the guy from bumping his head, he carefully lowered him to the ground and cringed. Why did it have to be him sorting this out tonight? Anxiously tapping the toes of cuban-heeled winklepickers, he glanced around himself before crouching beside the customer again. Whatever he decided to do, he needed to get this guy out of the public stairwell - it rather gave the wrong impression to have a drunk sprawled out in front of the entrance.
It was some minutes later when - after a lot of huffing and puffing - he had the man lugged over to the nearest bathroom, and was very gently trying to rouse him by splashing water on his face.
“Sakamoto-san... Sakamoto-san, good morniiiing... wakey-wakey.” He tried to tell himself he was interested due to concern over the man’s well-being, and yet the questions in the back of his mind arose again and again. This voice. He’d heard it somewhere before, and not just in the club. Stealing hearts. Wouldn’t that just be the killer. After all this time he had spent surreptitiously searching for the Phantom Thieves since their disappearance - could he really have found one? Or was Sakamoto just another fan stuck in the past?

How - how could someone break her so easily in no time at all? Despite her obvious embarrassment, it was probably a good distraction for the often tired yakuza. As much as she looked like a sunk in potato right now. She shook her head giving a sigh with the infectious grin on her lips, cheeks rosy from laughing, deciding to go bottoms up on her drink. What’s a lil cash for a good time and reliving ridiculous memories? It took her some time to really deep dive into her old files, but sure enough he managed to get something out of her. “I look like such a baby. Both in my fanatic stages as a tween, and also modeling some potential hair pieces I mom made. We always through of different crafted things to potentially sell to people. Goooooood.” Riley just stuffed her face against his shoulder, her laughter muffled against his sleeve. “Baahhh…losing out? Honey there are far better things to lose out than on lil ol me. If anything I’d be losing out on YOU.” Tapping his chest prominently with a finger. “Come ooooon. Anyone would be lucky seein’ that face every day. God…being married to Mana….the little girl in me is screaming at the thought. Pfff.”
Clearly enjoying himself, the host jostled Riley again playfully, emptying his own glass in mirror and ensuring that both of them were readily topped up for the next round.
“Oh my goddddd! You look amazing though!! Man, I wish I was that cool when I was a teenager...!” He linked his arm through hers, encouraging the blushing contact with a grin. “Wow! Did you sell them?! I bet you made a load of money, they look great!” There was a visual-kei themed host club not far from this one - he had always wondered what he would look like in the whole gothic get-up, but never dared to try. As much as he was certain Riley would want to hear about it, he wanted this club to remain her point of interest, and so he kept it to himself for now.
“Nah nah, I’d cry all the way to the shrine.” Tenji grinned. “I wonder what Mana looks like first thing in the morning....... what do you think??”

The weight of the other spoke leagues where words left one too tongue tied to try. It weighed heavily on her heart even for as recently as she’d known Tenji. Riley’s empathetic heart did not once die even in her current occupation, and to feel this from the usually bubbly and sweet host…
It wasn’t her business. She was far tempted to make it her business, if only to alleviate what confused pains Tenji may be going through. Suppose that was the trouble of being so empathic. She reached up to pet through those messy waves, holding him that much tighter in her arms. “I’m not about to devalue anything this person has in their heart, or their mind. Especially not when it comes to people they interact with, or potentially feel for. Some things happen that are out of our hands…and sometimes it can feel like something completely different…” She pulled Tenji back to look him in the eye, brows furrowed a bit. “If there’s any semblance that they’ve been around…but have not even once, shown you the attention they gave - then you have every right for an explanation. Just…one, hopefully simple one. I don’t care if they are a middle management or the hottest thing on the market. I can’t stand seeing such bright eyes clouded over for potentially petty reasons.”
When Riley held him back to look to him, both hands came up instinctively to rub at the host’s eyes, looking down rather than at her. Shoulders sloped, Tenji shook his head, and with more force than he had intended, spoke again: “I don’t wanna talk about it.” He didn’t want to think about it.
Talking about it made it real. At least when he was trying to pretend it wasn’t happening, it wasn’t pinning him to the wall like the head of something dead. There was no demanding anything from Sakurazawa. He did exactly what he wanted when he wanted, and as far as Tenji could tell, he had always been that way. He scrubbed his eyes more determinedly and sat back with a sigh. He knew he wouldn’t get the explanation Riley felt he was owed.
“It’s just not fair.”
