keeping rats is so funny even when theyre not doing anything at the moment but looking at you because they have the mind of a guy and the facial expressions of a bug.

Sorry for the brief break in posting, everyone

Unfortunately, we had a streak of bad luck. After Spice passed on March 10th, one of our boy rats, Briar, who hadn't been sick at all, passed away too. The same day. We just found him in his cage.

Five days after that, his brother, Cosmos, passed away as well. I don't think he was able to keep going without his brother.

Three losses in the span of 5 days has been difficult to cope with. The stress and grief made me sick for days. I was struggling to eat, and just felt numb. We've lost rats before, but this many in succession is a first.

The rest of our babies are doing well. We've been focusing on them, and they've helped us tremendously. My fiance and I are doing better after having some time to cope. I'm definitely still going to be posting here, I just needed to wait until it didn't hurt so bad.

In memory of our three late babies, I'm attaching some photos of them.

Found out that the vet we took Jury to last week has criminal charges for the abuse/neglect of over 500 animals, but was allowed to keep his license because they were privately owned animals. Absolutely livid. We'd done our research- we thought- when looking into this clinic. We'd only taken her there once, luckily, and have already found a new vet. The clinic seemed to have monitored reviews because it has 4.5/5 stars, but when I dug deeper this morning I found more complaints. Jury wasn't mistreated at this vet, luckily, but I'm fucking pissed that this guy still has a license just because the animals were his own and he paid a fine. There's not a lot of exotic vets around here, either.

What a terrible way to spend the day. I know you're supposed to be able to trust vets as people who are qualified to treat animals, but I'm not going to be making this mistake again.

Do your research on vets themselves, not just the clinics they work at. I feel stupid for not finding out about this before going the first time
