born in shelbyville, indiana in 1917, ja.mes bar.nes moved with his family to brooklyn, new york when james ( known affectionately as bucky to most )  is just seven. the barnes family lives modestly in brooklyn for the next couple of decades. following the united states’ entrance into the second world war, bucky is enlisted into the war and is shipped overseas in 1943. bucky remains with the army for two long years until disaster strikes in early 1945. injured in battle with the loss of a limb, presumed dead by his fellow infantrymen. found alive by soviets, bucky is taken as a prisoner and, over the next years, is subjected to experimentation, in the name of research. in the midst of the cold war, CIA personnel discover the cryogenically frozen body of one sergeant ja.mes bar.nes of the united states army in a soviet base, just over twenty years after he was presumed dead. he is found relatively unharmed  ( minor unhealed wounds — no cause for medical concern )  aside from the loss of his left arm, which has been replaced with a metal prosthetic.

bucky’s comatose body is taken back to the united states for medical attention and lab testing. doctors are shocked to learn that barnes has hardly aged physically, though his psychological status still cannot be be assessed.  while involved with an experimentation program known as MKUltra, one doctor mar.tin bre.nner becomes interested in the barnes case, curious about the state of the soldier’s psyche, what was done to him, and not to mention his physical resilience, though unable to contribute directly. with the end of MKUltra and barnes’ condition showing little to no signs toward improvement, brenner insists he take charge of the case, sure that progress can and will be made under his supervision. bucky is moved to the hawkins national laboratory in hawkins, indiana, still with signs of life but few signs of consciousness. he is monitored daily, tests are run to measure brain activity, he is presented with stimuli in hopes he can emerge from the coma — but brenner has a few other plans as well. brenner combines this specified case with his larger work into the expanse of the human psyche and the limit of psychic power. this is done not only to awaken barnes, but to learn the truth of his condition, why he is still alive and what exactly it is the soviets did to him. this has minor successes over the years, though the children being held in the laboratory, are often cited as unwilling to do this multiple times as what they witnessed was seemingly disturbing. but this only steels brenner to continue to pursue this information. by november of 1983, some progress has been made, bucky has shown positive signs in regards to brain activity, though he has not emerged from the coma. on the night of november 6th, an unexpected event occurs and one of the psychic children, known only as 011, unintentionally sends out a strong wave of psychic energy. this is more than enough to wake bucky from his coma. though it wasn’t the only thing she awoke. with the lab in alarm and bucky in a confused panic as to where, when, or who he is, he acts on instinct alone and makes his escape, only after incapacitating scientists and guards in the process. upon escaping the lab, bucky sees the young girl 011, who he believes he recognizes from what he thought were dreams. thinking she might know something about who he is and what happened to him, he follows her, but quickly loses her in the woods before making it out of them himself. mind overwhelmed by the night’s events, overcome by stimuli so shortly after awaking, bucky passes out 

will require heavy plotting for character interaction.

SPECIFIC SEASON EVENTS :

season 1 :  bucky is avoiding any personnel from hawkins lab while attempting to find eleven himself, still believing she could know who he is and where he’s from.

season 2 :  tbd.

NOTES :

as far as the winter soldier program goes, it is something that was never fully realized. it was in early stages and so bucky was brainwashed, some conditioning was done, and the soviets did begin to send bucky, as their personal agent, into the world, though on a testing basis. in this short time, a figure known as “the winter soldier” does begin to become known to governments around the world, but he is not necessarily a wanted individual as his existence is never proven due to lack of evidence.

bucky does have his prosethetic, as stated above. though it isn’t as sleek and high-tech as marvel shows it, even in some flashbacks, it’s there. this arm is considerably lower-tech, though still groundbreaking technology for the time, by far. the look of it is less polished and doesn’t quite match the anatomy of the arm  ( less aesthetic musculature, essentially )  . wires are visible on the prosthetic and they are connected directly to his body. rough example here and here.

by november of 1983, bucky would be roughly 66 years of age, though still appears to be in his mid to late 20s. 

for this verse, i will generally NOT categorize bucky as a super soldier technically. i think he was granted some physical advantages through whatever experimentation was done to him, purely because the soviets wanted the advantages, perhaps simple things such as reflexes. his aging process was also slowed slightly, though part of that is also due to cryostasis over the few decades he was held. but he isn’t necessarily more durable than the average person, nor is he much stronger. 

the sorts of imagery or memories that would have been seen inside his mind while comatose likely had to do with his time in the war, physical procedures performed on him by the soviets, and his brainwashing — all of which would be essentially dormant memories to him and he has no conscious awareness of them directly after the end of his comatose state.

that scene where bucky has to act like the winter soldier so as not to give himself, sam, or zemo away ... won’t lie that fucked bucky up a bit. having to consciously access that kind of thing that do that, fully aware, was not easy. sure, none of the people in that room were necessarily good people, but still. having to willingly (sort of) become the thing he’s trying to separate himself from is not pleasant.

THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER episode three: power broker

bucky doesn’t see himself as a hero for a lot of reasons. but honestly a good portion of it is the public perception of him.  when he was on trial, the public opinion of him was very up and down. it couldn’t be totally proven that he was brainwashed and controlled in the way he was, so there were some people saying he did the things he did voluntarily as a traitor to his country and other people saying he was a POW put into impossible circumstances, which he was. it’s not that everyone hates him or fears him, i doubt that’s even close to the case, but the voices of the people who do call him a criminal or call him dangerous are a lot louder, as they’re wont to be. if the people he tries to help don’t trust him, or just look at him as the threat, how can he see himself as the good force. we know that bucky is often doing things on the government’s dime, as per the conditions of his pardon, but he feel he also often operates in a vigilante-type space. he sees something wrong, he’ll investigate it, stop it if he needs to. but, to a lot of people, he’s not the face they want to see if someone is coming to save them.
