I Love My New Body
Lol. That was a weird title to write. But Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has been a life changer for me. The newest thing I've discovered is how useful my legs are. They are not only good for walking, but also for grabbing things, rolling me over, moving me out of tight spots, etc... but this has translated into normal life too! How I get up off the ground easier, I roll over in bed differently, and I seem to be experimenting with different ways of using my legs in everyday life. Another change I've noticed is I can now sit cross legged comfortably. BJJ has been such a huge blessing and I'm only one stripe in so far. Looking forward to more changes. I know they are there because I have seen the changes in my Ju-Jitseriro's body as well and he's looking great!

I had three goals physically this year. Get better from my POP injury, run a 5k, and get my first stripe. Earlier this month I ran my 5k. Tonight I was awarded my first stripe. I'm so happy!! 😊😁😃 As for the POP, it's way better than it was at the start of the year... I'll never be fully healed but I'm now able to run and participate in BJJ thanks to physical therapy. My two Judokas got their green belts with black stripes and my Beloved Ju-Jitseriro earned his blue belt tonight. I'm so proud of my men! They are doing awesome.

Thoughts  on side control
Last week I got a few people in side control (I would learn later lower side control). They wiggled around like dying fish giving me much trouble in holding them down. That night I started watching Youtube videos on escaping side mount because I wanted to know what someone could really do when I have side control.
I learned a few things from the videos:
1) I did not have a strong side  control. My jujitsero showed me how to even add cross face for more misery for my uke.
2) There are a few ways to escape but only one works for me.
Here are the videos:

Which one would work best for you? Answer below in the comments.

Me attempting a tani otoshi one of my current favorite throws.
It’s been a while since I have given an update.  My judokas are doing very well. They are preparing for promotions.  Their goal is to earn their green belt with a black stripe.  My ju-jitsero missed most of this semester for a few various things, so he will try to earn his blue belt next year.  I am still working hard at learning everything for my first stripe. Here’s my journey...
I have finally gotten to the point to where I can start to focus on a few things.  I can do a few throws.  I’m working on tani otoshi and tai otoshi.  While they are both different and done from different sides,  I can picture them the best.  I am still mixing up butterfly sweep and scissor sweep.  They are both super different and I wonder if because my ju-jitsero showed me those at the same time if I have a hard time keeping them separate in my head.  But I keep working on it and asking for everyone to refresh my mind.  I am hoping last night that I finally hit a moment to keep them separate.
I am also starting to defend better. Not really that great yet, the upper belts still give me lots of grace and patience when they roll with me, but I am slowly getting better. At least this is my personal feeling. I know I have lots of learning to go!  I loved what one of the senseis said last night: white belts are just learning the words, blue and purple are learning to put those words into sentences, and the upper belts are making poetry.  I cannot wait to get to make poetry in this wonderful sport. It’s going to take a long time, but I am going to enjoy the journey.

Another Update
As I continue this journey of learning jujitsu, I'm seeing things my men have learned that I never caught before.
I'm not sure about my Jr. Judokas, but my Ju-Jitseriro had sore fingers for the first few months. I'm now experiencing that.
The emotional roller coaster of some classes I feel defeated and like this is not working and others where I feel on top of the world and successful. Apparently my Ju-Jitseriro went through that too and everyone else pretty much does as well.
I'm working hard at trying to learn everything. Mastering one or two things at a time. I can finally do an americana and last night I learned a bunch of arm bars one can do in (forgive me for not spelling this right) makuera kase kitome. I can get people in a scarf hold.. and switching to a pillow scarf hold shouldn't be too bad so I can submit my opponent. It's taking time, but I'm getting it. I keep pressing on. 💕

Image: The heart shape bruise I got from either self-defence or BJJ class. Sensei wasn’t kidding when he said the love of BJJ gets in your blood.
———- The past two weeks have been a blast. I received my official BJJ belt with the empty rank bar. I now feel like I can really train for that first stripe.
I’m slowly starting to sense what is happening to me when we do rondori. Still don’t know what I’m doing yet. My Ju-Jitseriro is amazing though. He’s got mad skills. I hope I can do as well as he is doing.
I have almost mastered the butterfly sweep. Now to master knowing when to use it. 😂
9-21-17 I did my first arm bar tonight. "I think you have talent, you're a natural. I think you were born to choke people. It's always the quiet pretty ones that are. " -My Ju-Jitseriro

Last week I learned about the "butterfly sweep". It was such a huge "ah-ha!" moment for me, because I said in front of the class "So that's what my husband has been doing to me!" (When we spar). That was a little embarrassing. I should have written this right after class because I had another revelation about something, that helped me understand what fun the men of my household have when they participate in these sports. Alas, I have forgotten that point. I shall try to get my thoughts down sooner. My oldest judoka grabbed my kimono later that night and exclaimed, "Ew! I didn't know girls could sweat". We're all learning things.

My little Jr. Judokas and my Jiujitsero do their best to keep their nails short for judo and jujitsu. One of the reasons why is to protect your uke, so you don't scratch them. Being that I did my second class ever in jujitsu, I forgot that, and learned a second reason for having short finger nails... so they don't get ripped off when you're learning lapel grips. So much more to learn...

A little more understanding
Our dojo had an open mat. I normally let my Ju-Jitseriro go alone, but since I'm practicing and trying to figure out if I can learn BJJ, the whole family went. 1) I know why my Ju-Jitseriro is becoming more flexible, you get so sore it drives you to stretch more often for relief. 2) Sizzor sweep is fun. 3) My oldest child can do an arm bar and it hurts. He also learned not to do an arm bar too quickly on a baby white belt. I also learned I need to pay more attention or I'll be hurting (my arm is still fine thankfully). 4) I learned that my Ju-Jitseriro really enjoyed having his wife there participating in his hobby. The smile on his face was precious. That's what I learned this week. Just a couple more open mats and maybe I'll start BJJ. :)

Oh no... I'm being sucked in...
When my Ju-Jitseriro first started learning BJJ, I just rolled my eyes and told him I have enough laundry as it is, he has to wash his own gis. I know, what a loving thing for a wife to say, right? Slowly week by week, he grew in love with his new sport. He grew stronger than ever before (he's got some amazing biceps now). He has studied hard and he's almost a four stripe white belt who can hold his own with a blue belt thanks to some amazing teachers. After watching my boys do their sports, watching tournament, even photographing some in house tournaments, my hard heart towards BJJ and Judo has started to change. Something inside says... I want to join them! I'm am going to great lengths to heal my broken body so I can do BJJ with my Beloved, my Ju-Jitseriro. Last night I got to roll with him on our crash pad at home (my boys are so serious about this we actually have crash pads now). I acted just like a spastic white belt, but the only issue I had with my broken body was bridging my husband. Which is easy to tap out of... I hope. Maybe this year I can run my first 5k and get at least one stripe on my belt. But first I'll will train with my love to figure out if I am able to do this safely and learn not to spaz. He still has to wash the gis. 😜

Me to my husband : I can't wait to get strong enough to start learning BJJ with you. DH: Here, tap my arm. I tapped. DH:There, you just learned the most fundamental technique. Thanks dear.

It's not Tae Kwon do...
I was talking to a friend about working out, and how I'm about to quit going to our local gym. She said it's fine because we do Tae Kwon Do.... ummmmm. No. We do judo and jujitsu.

We got new floors a few months ago. I had no idea that this would end up being an awesome thing. My judokas can now play a game which strengthens their grips. Watch out world! 😜

They say when you learn about something, you start to see it where ever you go. Like a car you never knew about, now everyone owns one. That's how it is with martial arts for me. I hear and see so much of it now, I can't help but see it everywhere I go. Even if it's in cute fictional form. (I bought the book for my husband btw, just to be silly). :)

I'm competing with gis for drying rack space. I need a larger drying rack.

Beans, beans, the magical fruit...
I really need to learn to not make bean dishes on judo/BJJ days. In this, I need to do my part so when my guys spar, they don't torture their partners.... although Jr. Judo boys might get a good laugh.

Experiences in Life Ranked By Belt Color
My Ju-Jitseriro has a thing about ranking life experiences by belt color. For instance, he told me that he was a coral belt in mucus management and that I was a baby white belt. Sigh
