Fenris romance thoughts

A little random thought I had about Fenris’ romance in Dragon Age 2… Many I read were mad that Fenris was the only romance to not say “I love you”, hell, even Sebastian says it, even Isabela says it… But I find it more interesting he doesn’t…

Fenris has only known a few things while growing up… Control, fear, power… As a slave he wasn’t permitted comforts of the heart like love. Even when he escaped, his ability to trust people was so low that if someone was genuinely interested or cared for him, he wouldn’t care or know how to react.

When Hawke meets him, he’s been free for a while now and has picked up some traits that go against his old life. He hates feeling controlled and doesn’t want someone claiming him, touching him is a big no no unless he trusts you (as seen when you grab his arm and he instinctively throws you to the wall with his lyrium markings), and he distrusts mages who are weak in spirit who would turn to dark arts.

Hawke and Fenris fall for each other and after the romance is completed he says “If there is a future to be had, I’ll spend it by your side.”… Slaves don’t think of the future, they think of only the present, what master wants. In this he is telling you he wants this to be as long term as you wish.

And afterwards, when you talk to him again, he says “I am yours.”… This line is so powerful to his character… Think about it, the first scene we see him in starts with him killing slaves and piercing some guys chest with his arm saying he was not a slave, he belonged to no one… And here he is relinquishing some control, saying he is theirs, that his heart belongs to them but williningly. This means WAAAAAAY more than any abstract declaration of caring as “I love you.”

Long story short, Fenris is the best romance in the game, and I hope we see him in DA4!

Sometimes Fenris’s okay with magic.

You know what’s great? People acknowledging Fenris’ incredible intelligence instead of dismissing it because he’s illiterate.

People acknowledging Fenris as a polyglot (tevene, common, qunlot, definitely many more such as nevaran, anders, orlesian etc.)

Fenris as incredibly well spoken (in a second language no less)

Fenris as incredibly well versed in cultural and legal matters

Fenris as well versed in poetry, history, religion, philosophy, etc. do to being surrounded by them for years

Fenris as extremely resourceful and skilled in matters beyond being a warrior (you can bet your ass staying free for years took more than just strength)

Fenris as someone who has many creative and diverse skills

You can bet your ass that this man is absolutely a sponge for knowledge and revels in learning new things, both by necessity of having to be aware to survive, and because he enjoys it/is proud of it.
