AITA for leaving my fiance for his own safety?

Hi reddit!! I (M35) have been with my fiance (M?) for 4-7 years (long story, we slept together but decided it was best to not pursue a relationship right then, but we still cared about each other, officially got together 3 years later). Both me and my fiance have been through a lot, and he particularly has issues with personal relationships and vulnerability. Four years ago, the city we were living in was destroyed, and we were forced to be refugees. We promised to not leave each other's sides, and he expressed that he "couldn't bear to live without me". The issue is, earlier this year, I got a letter from a close friend asking for my help. I have known this friend for a decade, and the issue was something I am particularly involved in and I am probably one of the only people who has any sort of expertise in this particular thing. I agreed to travel across continents to go help my friend with the issue, but here is where I might have been wrong. I did not tell my fiance I was planning on leaving, nor where I was planning on going. I left a note expressing that I was okay and that I loved him, but I could not bring him with me. I was worried that he would be harmed where I was going, and I knew that if I told him I was planning on going I would not be able to convince him to not come with me. I was only concerned for his health, because I know he would kill himself to keep me safe, and I can't have that. So, AITA?
