Say Goodbye to Humanity
This is my second post since I have started my blog two years ago. I stopped writing since then and you might wonder why I am writing again now. Well… For many reasons… For one I found a muse, aside from that, I am home. I find it very strange to call this place home after being away for so long. I no longer think of myself from here and I definitely don’t think like most of the people here. Yet, somehow, as soon as I land it feels like home. It makes me think of what home really is…. Is it the people? Or is it the land? If my family wasn’t here would I still crave coming back? And would it still feel like home? Questions I’m not sure I’ll ever find the answers to. Even though these questions occupy my mind, they are not the reason why I decided to write again. Lately I have been satisfying my thirst for reading by reading books like the Hunger Games and the Diversion series. I feel a deep connection with these books… I could never tell why. I thought it might be the style of writing or the storyline, but now I know it’s much deeper than that. Whether it’s district 13 or The diversion experiment in Chicago… Yes they are fiction and the storyline is different, yet, the setting is strangely similar and extremely familiar to me. Turns out, district 13 and the factions are different descriptions of home… My home. The land in which I was born and raised. Unlike all my previous visits to Egypt, this one is by far the most different. I have had a lot to take in and I couldn’t help, at times, but stop and reflect on what I see. Comparing majority of Egypt’s streets to district 13 and the factionless residency areas, there is little to no difference. Between the wreckage of torn buildings, broken streets and chaos… I felt like I was stripped from my post and immediately placed inside the books I have come to love. The average Egyptian lives the life of dauntless (the most dangerous lifestyle) everyday, from crossing the streets between speeding cars that don’t even seem to know how to break… To the interactions with police authorities who seem to have forgotten what humanity is like. However, unlike my beloved books, this is reality. There is no option to simply stop reading or the luxury of changing the setting of the storyline. The longer I stay the more attached, yet, disconnected I feel… Attached to the familiar feeling of the loving family and the foolish hope of a dream come true… And disconnected from myself because seeing all the disrespect and chaos makes my humanity ache and my heart break. I find myself chained by fear… Not because I truly fear but because I don’t feel strong enough to sacrifice myself and surrender easily and without a strategy. Witnessing oppression and injustice with all it’s forms and shapes does something to a person…. Not being able to speak the truth and standing up for what’s right has the worst consequence… You feel like you’re dying inside. When a human loses their humanity… What else is left to lose? When feeling like a walking zombie with no aim and no purpose becomes your life… What kind of life is it? Even though I love being here and I crave this familiar feeling with all my being… Being here slowly kills me inside… Murders my humanity, rapes my bravery and kidnaps my sound of reason.

Hahahaha
Okay, this is how the Imam tells the story but paraphrased and what not:
“There was a new family from Africa that moved into the community, and African American boy proposed their daughter. The family refused. And when I asked them, “Why?” They said, “Because he’s black!” Then I said, ‘Where are...
