Is speaking English kind of a requirement for being an angel?

It’s more a requirement for being an international model, period. By the time a model becomes an Angel she’s already experienced in the global fashion world and anyone working in any international industry ends up with some level of conversational English. I doubt it’s written down anywhere as a hard rule that Angels need to know English, probably because anyone working at that level of modeling is already communicative.

What are your thoughts on how VS chose to air Ming’s fall?

I’m furious. Air the fall, fine, we all knew about it beforehand and it would’ve been a bad look to pretend it never happened. Speaking of which, you know what was gut-wrenching? Getting the camera in her face before the walk so she could tell us with a beaming smile that it’s her hometown and her whole family is watching. God help me, that was cruel.

But okay, so you’ve shown the fall because of course. Then, don’t have the camera follow Ming as she exits the runway already crying. Don’t show her sobbing backstage as Lily tries to console her. Don’t then have Leslie Odom Jr give his unnecessary opinion so he could turn it into a lesson about falling 7 times and getting up 8. And do not, please do not make that the absolute last we see of Ming in the show! I get it, it was her last walk, but now everyone’s last impression is of her sobbing in humiliation. Not a moment on camera after she’d had some time to compose herself, no backstage shot of her accepting it with poise. Just the crying. That’s all she gets. It’s so much less than she deserved.

And in the blink of an eye, that’s that! It’s over and I cried when Ming cried and Pink was so not a disaster (did you drink for all the puffy coats? I put that there for a reason) and I’m going to have to watch it again and again because it was so well done. Also so I can watch the opening. Not cool, internet.

By the by, Jasmine and Josephine learning kung fu from Chinese experts is everything. It is why I do what I do. It is also why I drink.

There are 56 models walking: 13 Angels, 30 returning models, and 13 newcomers. Our performers this year are Harry Styles, Miguel, Leslie Odom Jr. and Chinese star Jane Zhang. Classical pianist Li Yundi is also listed on the VS website, most likely accompanying one of the singers. The Fantasy Bra is the $2 million Champagne Nights Fantasy Bra worn by the wonderful Lais Ribeiro. 

Be ready at 10 pm sharp with your favorite drinks to enjoy the spectacle!

I haven’t seen it widely discussed but like 2009, this year’s fashion show will also feature a contest winner! Chinese model One Wang is 20 years old and the winner of a reality show dedicated to putting a Chinese up-and-comer on the Victoria’s Secret runway.

This article I’ve linked, written before the winner was announced, is the only one I’ve found that gives substantial information about the contest which was streamed only on Chinese sites. It hasn’t been a secret, exactly, but VS hasn’t said a word about it in English-language media that I’ve seen. I wouldn’t have known about it if an article I was browsing with pictures of all the looks hadn’t named her as “One Wang (contest winner)”. And even then I had to do some real digging to find anything about it. I expect we’ll learn more about it during the broadcast.

Unlike the 2009 show, all of the contestants were already models instead of normal girls picked off the street. Wang is represented by Elite NYC and Esee Model Shanghai.

The Winter Tale section had me worried but judging from what I’ve seen, it’s soooo much different from the past Winter/snow/ice segments. It’s quite unique and abstract

I agree! It’s much different than the usual sparkly ice princess fare. More of a Baltic/Scandinavian folk vibe, with bright colors and sweeping draped fabrics. It’s refreshing to see, I think we all expected the worst when we heard about the segment!

I’m so sad about Ming :(

I KNOW I’m devastated for her. I so hope they don’t make a big thing of it on the broadcast, but Ed wrote this whole spiel on instagram about how great it was that Ming was able to stay strong after her fall, and how wonderful Gizele was for helping her up, and that the whole world saw this great example of how Angels behave etc etc etc, so they’ll probably make a thing of it.

It happened!

I lost track of the days a bit and didn’t realize when exactly the show would tape, plus China is 12 hours ahead of me so all the prep and filming happened overnight! Rude tbh.

So I’ll be spending the day cobbling together a list of who walked when, who performed when, and what kind of crazy shit went wrong, because there’s always something (RIP Ming). Holler at me if you learn something interesting!

It is probably 100% my fault for not listening to enough mainstream radio, but this is the most confusing lineup I’ve seen in years. What are these people going to perform? Harry Styles apparently has new music out, which I haven’t heard, so there’s that. Miguel dropped a new single literally yesterday, but could honestly do anything. Is Leslie Odom Jr even a solo artist...? (I know he has a Christmas album, but would they really?) Jane Zhang is a Chinese pop star who I’m excited to learn more about. The singles I’ve found on youtube are in English, although it would’ve been fun to see a number in Chinese. $20 says she goes during the Porcelain segment.

Harry Styles is confirmed to be a last-minute replacement for Katy Perry, who’s banned from entering China (and let’s talk about how much trouble the show is getting from the Chinese government, because that’s hilarious). (RIP Gigi.) How do you get Harry Goddamn Styles last-minute in China? Those negotiations must’ve been fun. I wonder if they didn’t have him ready as a backup ahead of time, because he was on pretty much everyone’s lists of probable performers.

Are these the wings we saw in the videos, with all the safety pins? I’m intrigued! I like the Balmain collaboration not least because I think the show will benefit from a more polished couture (drink!) look. “Fashion Punk” is a whole genre by itself, which I adore, so I’m super psyched that they’re doing it this way this year.

Oh, she’s so pretty. She’s really grown into being an Angel. A lot of fans overlook Lily but I’ve really come to love her. Gosh. Anyway, moving right along.

This is lovely. I think they could’ve done more with the grey mesh over her arms, like use more of it in other places, but it’s very nice on its own and the wings are so sparkly. If I had those shoes I would wear them all the time.

Took me a while but I’ve really warmed up to this one. The wings are at just such an angle that the head-on view isn’t too busy, which gives the fringe more room to shine. Looks good!

I wonder if Izabel Goulart auditioned this year and was rejected or just didn’t audition... she’s so passionate about VS

Holy shit you’re right, I hadn’t even realized she was missing until you mentioned it. No she definitely auditioned, she’s in all the “here’s what the models wore to the auditions!!” photosets. That’s a shame. I’m sure she’s disappointed and I’ll be missing her too, but nothing’s guaranteed once you’re no longer an Angel.
