“In summer 2019, my family lived through a personal rental housing crisis in Detroit that shook us to our core. We were illegally evicted twice, and after attempting to take legal action on an unresponsive, out of state landlord, were forced to live without running water (despite having no past due bill) for 3 weeks until I suffered a miscarriage at 7 months pregnant. My family lives well above the poverty line, and this still happened to us simply because we live in a city where our standard of living is not a priority, regardless of the measures we take to get relief through the proper channels. This happened to us because working towards home ownership, even in a city with the highest poverty rates in the nation, is incredibly hard for Black families like mine.”
