While I haven’t finished the skill tree I have pretty much finished my most recent crochet project. This is Ruru in its Ke version, from JO1’s Sanrio characters, the Jochum. As you can see it’s still missing it’s mouth and the heart on the crown, but I don’t own any red or gray string. This is my first pattern design, I’ll talk about the process under the cut.
I designed this pattern entirely on my own from things I’ve learned by crocheting other things. Tbf it’s pretty basic shapes so it’s not like it was super difficult to design, however, there’s some things I wish I’d done differently:
I wish I had designed the tentacles first, that way I would’ve sized the head correctly. The head was the easiest part to do cause it was just a sphere so I went with it first, I didn’t realize I wouldn’t be able to size the tentacles down without them basically losing their fun shape.
The yellow is the wrong shade but I didn’t have anything else lol
Because the head is small, the crown also looks too big, but I was afraid making it any smaller would mess with the shape.
I think that really fluffy type of thread would make it look way better.
Though I don’t love how it came out, there are some things I do like about it:
Figuring out the tentacles was really hard and I’m really proud of myself for doing it and managing to keep the shape pretty well!
Figuring out the crown was also fun since I couldn’t find any patterns for small ones lol
I’ve gotten so much better at attaching parts on, still needs some practice tho
And finally here’s the process detailed in pictures!

I saw a tiktok of someone making a skill tree for glass blowing (?) and I would love to make one for crochet but I have no idea where to even begin? How can I group crochet related skills?

I finished the scarf (finally) and made a little frog amigurumi with the scraps! (For some reason my brain decided that was the logical jump in difficulty).
His name is Sir Scraps the Inconvenienced and he’s mildly inconvenienced by life.

My great aunt came to visit from the USA and she taught me the basics of crocheting and knitting! I made a little bonnet (is that the name?) and now I’m working on a scarf~

Learning crochet master list!!
I made this for people who want to learn crochet but don’t know where to start. I found that out of all the videos I found, these were the most helpful, but feel free to dig around YouTube yourself✨
The bare basics:
https://youtu.be/jUIfV-Qcq2c
youtube
All other essential stitches and more.(essentials are single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, and maybe treble crochet):
https://youtu.be/kj8BGV3ysro
youtube
The magic knot(the easy, and not too chunky way of tying together yarn.):
https://href.li/?https://youtu.be/15hqoR0KJHA
youtube
The magic circle(essential for circle projects like hats and coasters):
https://youtu.be/Ex02JPOXf_k
youtube
These are the essential skills(in my opinion) for crochet. Below the cut are additional things that you may want to learn(such as amigurumi), or at least take a look at. I hope you find use in this, and have a wonderful day🌸
Tips for amigurumi(recommend you watch before, and/or after you learn the basics of amigurumi):
https://youtu.be/v7eI-JD-Ajw
youtube
amigurumi basics(use a crochet hook that’s a size down from the recommended, so for example, if you’re using weight 4 yarn that recommends a 5 mm hook, use a 4 mm crochet hook):
https://youtu.be/ushHnIxLdYw
youtube
How to read crochet patterns(description of the video has all the abbreviations laid out in a list):
https://youtu.be/-5JQkbqzvzw
youtube
And here’s an abbreviation chart. Admittedly some of it looks a bit odd, but when looking for beginner patterns, generally people have a list of abbreviations in the pattern to help you out.
Tumblr media
How to block a project(so say you have a square that isn’t looking so square, you can block it, and then it will gain its blocky shape):
https://youtu.be/v0Hfu0byjxs
youtube
Recommended beginner projects!
Simple coasters, very easy to do(uses the magic circle, double crochet, slip stitches, and increases)
https://youtu.be/vItcjc8nJ9o
youtube
Fingerless gloves, easy to do.(may have a bit of trial and error in how long you want it, but besides that it’s very easy and fun. Uses treble crochet.)
https://www.thesprucecrafts.com/fingerless-gloves-pattern-978086
Leg warmers, easy to do.(just chain a few less then you initially think, otherwise you’ll have to add drawstrings. Uses double crochet, and slip stitch.)
https://www.bhookedcrochet.com/2014/10/16/beginner-crochet-leg-warmers/
Flower buds: very easy to do.(uses single crochets, double crochets, and some easy sewing) she explains it very carefully, and is a wonderful beginner project.
https://youtu.be/v2dIRtdbX7E
youtube
Other random tips:
Make sure you stretch your hands! It’s super important you keep your hands limber and flexible, especially because they can get tense after a session of crocheting. Here’s this cool chart thing I found showing some very good hand stretches!
Tumblr media
When doing repeated rounds(like single crochet x times for five rounds) try using the calculator on your phone. So for example: from round 5 to 9 single crochet only, you’d put in 4 + 1, hit equal, and every time you start another round hit equal again until you’ve gotten to the final round it says to do that. Yes I know stitch counters are a thing, but I’m pretty sure this is different.
Paper clips are good replacements for stitch markers! I recommend those flexible, kind of plastic ones? Any should work though. Also twist ties, crafty pipe cleaners, bobby pins, and other random bits are good stitch marker replacements!
Yarn weight can be confusing, so here’s a chart to help you out! When it comes to yarn ply… things can get confusing(at least for me), so for now, maybe just stick to patterns that specify what weight it is.
Tumblr media
More beginner patterns, and useful things to learn will be added in due time. Also if there are any beginner patterns or tips you think should be added to the list, you can DM me or leave a comment and I’ll be sure to check it out! 😸

Finally a spread that has to do with Wonho 💕 I’ve been wanting to make this spread for a while but I don’t have access to a printer so it took me a while to get the pictures, but it’s finally done~
This is Wonho as a Witch of the Light from the Fairy Oak saga.
