More serious dev update: initial combat playtests have finally begun, we are shifting gears into preparing for the beta update, and I am busy writing our first introductory travelogue!
(*Travelogue being what certain games about dragons or finding paths would call an adventure or module.)

Wow, it's been a minute since we updated Tumblr. Sorry! We meant to make an anniversary post last month but.... life. Those who follow us on patreon or are in our discord probably already know all this, but, you know, I've been neglecting our tumblr and I should really do something about that.
Anyway, we're still hard at work! Combat is ACTUALLY almost ready for some internal playtests, and once those are done, we'll be preparing to push it out for the general public! Finally!

How’s about a preview of our new layout? The new page is on the left, compare to our old layout on the right. Pretty fancy, huh?

A very happy (slightly belated) New Year from us over here at the Mirage Company! We took a bit of a break over the holidays for some R&R, but now we’re back on track with our next update, which should be our last major update before beta!
Behind the scenes, right now we’re reworking skills and making some final revisions to the journey and quests to make sure everything is nice and consistent before we drop the behemoth that is tactical combat. Combat playtests will be happening behind the scenes very soon, too!
Once our next update drops, gwaja will go back to finishing up the first four classes and cleaning up the combat rules in preparation for beta, and Abby will be diving headfirst into rearranging the book and setting up our new layout. Exciting stuff ahead!
Thank you to everyone who’s supported us this year, and we hope you’re looking forward to the future of Wellspring!

After several weeks of sitting in the drafts folder, Cephalopod Squad is finally complete! Cephalopod Squad is a silly hack of Grant Howitt’s Honey Heist about playing as heroic squid children. Which definitely has zero relation to the very popular third person shooter franchise by a certain C&D-happy video game company.
You can get the PDF version of Cephalopod Squad for free on the Mirage Company’s itch.io page now.

Stop! New Wellspring Update!
Well, sort of. Mostly I wanted an excuse to use this illustration because it didn’t end up making the final cut. :(
Wellspring’s tactical combat is finally available for preview! This is a patron-exclusive preview, but it lays out the basic details of our combat rules in a small 10-page PDF. All the critical crunch is here: action economy, movement, and, most importantly, How to Hit Things. We finally did it! (For those who have not been following us for long, we’ve actually been slowly chugging away at the combat system basically all summer and fall. Like, we initially said it would be out by September. Whoopsie.)
For those who are not patrons, fret not—0.2 is well underway! Beta will be bringing the full tactical combat system along with major overhauls to the book’s structure to make it easier to find critical information, a brand-spankin’-new layout (again), and all sorts of fun stuff.
We’re still working out if and when the combat preview will be available to non-patrons, but we’re going to tentatively say it’ll be sometime following internal playtesting, which we are looking at being ready to begin this month. So, if all goes well, our followers who don’t belong to the Night Market will see combat in some form come the New Year. In the meantime, you can come join the Mirage Company discord server for updates on what’s new in the world of Wellspring.

Its itch.io Creator's day! Wellspring is still, as it has been since release, pwyw, but if there were ever a day to send a few bucks our way, it'd be today. The Mirage Company would appreciate your support. :)

INCOMING TRANSMISSION: [MIRAGECO_WELCOME] WOULD YOU LIKE TO LISTEN? > Y // N
Alright: we're gonna be up front with this. No cherry picking and painting this place as some kind of perfect fantasyland. First things first: welcome to the broadcast.
And second things second: the world itself is trying to kill us.
See, it's succeeded once before; we've built our foundation on the bones of a dead civilization. Some of the Archivists think they were the ones who brought it out. They built temples of steel. Mountains of concrete and glass. Technology that drank deep from the Wellspring and burned bright with progress. And it was only then that the Gloom rose up.
That's the only logical progression of events, anyway. We know from experience: a footprint that big couldn't have been left if they were like us. Under threat from the start. The thing is, we don't know why the Gloom came to be. Maybe it was a consequence of their way of life. Or maybe it was something like us, brought to the world by pure chance. Whatever the cause, even they didn't stand a chance against it.
The Gloom scraped them from the face of the world. Sucked dry the mana from their great civilization and left it as nothing but wastelands.
Then we fell here.
We didn't really choose this place—the Grand Shift placing us here was something of a cruel act of fate. Once we arrived, we couldn't leave. A disparate array of people from worlds we no longer remember. Trapped on—say it with me now—a world that's trying to kill us.
That was a long time ago, though. And you may have noticed that we're still here.
Whoever we were once is lost to history, but it turns out the people who came here in the Grand Shift were a stubborn bunch. They banded together to survive. They learned how to fight back.
Now, we are the Great Family. One people united against an apocalypse that never ends. There's not many of us, but we've managed thus far. Pushing back the Gloom little by little. Building a civilization in the face of ever-present doom. Learning from the people here before us. We've made ourselves a place here, and we'll be damned if we let this world get the better of us.
(We know, that's a lot of history right up front. Don't worry, we're about to get to our point. The reason you're hearing this broadcast.)
The Gloom still looms. Its threat is ever present. No matter how many victories we claim, there's a lot of world, and only a handful of us to fight back.
That's why we're calling on you, Traveler. Why this transmission has reached your eyes and ears. We need you to give in to that siren song of wanderlust. To venture out into our world. Whether you want to delve into the mysteries it holds or fight in the name of the Great Family is up to you. We just need protagonists for this story.
Don't worry—we've made sure to prepare a guide for you. We wouldn't just throw you into the deep end like that. Everything a new traveler might need to know—just give it a read.
When you're done, tell 'em the Mirage Company sent you. We'll have your back out there.
#Mirage Company transmissions#narrative stuff#we were going to prepare some images to go along with this but we have our hands rather full with preparing for combat

hello again, tumblr. it's been a while.
I'm Amber and I used to be known as either senatorkhaleesi or imnotamisandristbut on these parts. Now, about 8 years later, I'm excited to return home to this blue hell site focused on building community, amplifying diverse voices in TTRPGs, and doing absolutely cool-as-hell-shit in whatever space this ends up being (hopefully with 500% less Doctor Who and Sherlock).
Here's what I've been up to in the TTRPG Space over the last little while:
I currently stream on Twitch, usually hosting TTRPG Study Hall, tarot reading nights, cozy games, and, of course, regular TTRPG one shots.
I appear in a ton of TTRPG actual plays, most recently at Lost Caravan RPG, Girls Run These Worlds, the Initiative Order, Weave the Tale, Going Critical RPG, Homie and the Dude, and more. I'll also be running TTRPG series regularly in 2023 -- more to come!
I'm on Tiktok, too! I'm currently getting my feet wet on that app, but I'm excited to see how that platform grows.
I'm a TTRPG writer, editor, and content strategist! I've edited books like Necrobiotic and Flabbergasted, performed content strategy for Fat Magic and Roll Together, and have written for groups like BeNeverending and Eldritch Osiris Games.
I've also written a few games including Fabulous Folkish Baking Programme (where you, too, can live out your fears of having a soggy bottom), Fire Sauce Fever Dream (if you want to journal about existing in Taco Bell), and more. Check out my games at my itch.io here!
#amber is a delightful person 10/10 would recommend following and watching their streams#fellow ttrpgs

Do you play tabletop rpgs? Do you want to play ttrpgs, but are intimidated by the dense rules of the big-name games? Or are you just looking for something new? Well, we’ve got good news for you: we’ve got it.
Wellspring is a new ttrpg from The Mirage Company, which currently consists of an artist-writer duo of game designers. We’re a game focused on the aesthetics and storytelling sensibilities of manga and jrpgs, especially those world-spanning adventures with equal parts wonder and danger.
In Wellspring, players take the stage as travelers — explorers, traders, and heroes who are all trying to carve out a life on a dangerous planet. Some will journey through the most perilous depths to save those lost within the Gloom, some will mine it for mysterious treasures from ages long lost to catastrophes. Others will aim to find the source of the Gloom; clearing the lands it’s claimed before it overtakes civilization itself.
Wellspring RPG offers a scene-focused journey system that plays out in chapters, and (coming soon!) grid-focused tactical combat with deep customization. In Wellspring, your table can tell the stories you love.
The setting features inspiration from the dying earth genre, famous manga both old and current, and future funk / glitch / vaporwave aesthetics.
If you’re interested in checking it out, come hit up our itch.io! A link to our discord server can also be found there. We host playtests fairly frequently, so you can drop in and give the game a try. And of course we have the tumblr, where you can find various ttrpg shenanigans and keep up with game updates!
#also reblogging this again as our general intro to Wellspring#combat is well underway! gwaja's latest estimate is about 80% save for the first classes#we are aiming for December release#it'll be fun#shameless self reblog of shamless self promotion ️
