WW2 AU BLU heavy x medic

Friedrich ‘Fritz’ Müller was a field medic in the German army, drafted and sent to the eastern front to help fight the Red Army in Russia. Fritz does not support the nazi regime or share their view of the world, but doesn’t fight the drafting as his fate as a gay man would be a bullet to the head if he was found out.

During a push through enemy territory Fritz is separated from his group when a bomb detonates near him and knocks him unconscious, leaving his squad thinking he died. When he wakes he takes cover in a nearby forested area to collect himself. He finds an abandoned trench to take cover in, but there is a wounded Russian soldier hiding there as well.

This is Ivan Kovalenko, a Ukrainian soldier in the Red Army. Ivan is hiding in the trench after being shot in the side by German soldiers. When he sees the German nearing his hideout he shoots at him with his rifle, but being badly hurt he misses. Fritz sees the injured man and tries to tell him that he’s no threat. He lost his one rifle in the field when he was knocked out. But Ivan doesn’t speak German and Fritz doesn’t speak Russian. Silence. After a few awkward moments

Fritz sits down beside Ivan. Ivan looks at the German and sees the Red Cross on his uniform.

He pokes him and lifts his hand from the still bleeding wound. “Doktor?”, “ja”. Fritz understands.

He points at the Russian, “Stalin?” The big man makes a grimace, “Hitler?” Fritz does the same.

Good, an understanding. Fritz helps address the wound and they share a shelter for the night.

They will need each other to make it through the cold winter night.
