Now adding texture!
Took a break when I got stuck on joining the two horn halves. I had to carve down the base into a to account for some warping. The original mold has narrow oval base, final shape was a wider circle. Then I could hot glue it down and cover up the join with foam clay.
I wasted *so much* clay sanding down and rebuilding the shape until it was right 🥲
Also turns out dry hot glue gunks up sandpaper dremel bits. Sorry dad I’ll replace them for you.

Two sets of horns done and slathered in foam clay. I was right that the foam clay helped hide a lot of the imperfections, they should just need a good sanding to get the final finish 🤞
Meanwhile I have the horns of dunshire on my desk so all sides can fully dry

Round 2 is much more neat and efficient, which is really showing just how slow this process is. Only the first 4th of this bad boy traced and cut in ~3ish hrs of labor.
Very worth it to see each piece be so identical, and to know I can do all the gluing in one go instead of having to trace and cut the left side all over again!
I also tried a slightly different technique for the flat patterning that makes fewer individual pieces, but each piece looks a bit wackier. Hopefully it still looks ok all assembled.
I definitely cut some corners on the labeling. I already know what I would do differently next time lol

I am building this this tiefling from the horns up. I have another pair for my bg3 bard tav which are up next after these.
What I’m thinking so far:
- Since they’re a pretty indulgently large and impractical shape, I imagine her family as of an old and proud, maybe noble line that is bred for aesthetics (though no longer relevant or powerful)
- durge
- she/they
- socialite, charmingly sweet and naive, not too bright (Reverse Astarion high charisma low intelligence)
- dancer, *loves* the drums but can’t play for shit and has always been a little sad about it.
- pre-tadpole they were a performance artist (lots of violent masochistic themes) while struggling to understand and control the urge. One day they give in, much to the bloody misfortune of the audience.
- magpie loves shiny. Her callers and admirers know this and she has, dragon-like, hoarded a large collection of trinkets and jewelry. Her favorites are gold and opal.
- Lots of piercings and horn decoration. She jingles when she walks.
- intricate decorative scarification, part of a long-term performance, beginning at their feet and working up their whole body. Some of it done by her own hand, some by participants in the performance.

We. Are. Making. Progress.
Both the bottom horns finished, onto the even more twisty sisters. The second horn actually ended up being a disaster bc i got cocky and measured only once before cutting. Hot glued too close to the sun 😔

It’s a hot glue mess but i mean
That shit worked!
I’m hoping i can use the cutouts as a stencil for the mirror side, we’ll have to see if they’re accurate enough. I’ll probably trace them and then double check with the pattern pieces. I got a lot more efficient with the hot glueing towards end so i hope all the sharpie and eva fumes i inhaled don’t cancel kill those particular brain cells yet

MIT wishes they had me
All laid out this looks both very cool and very dubious. The papercraft test run fit together well *enough* but I both a) don’t know if the eva foam will be as forgiving and b) it was incredibly futzy to assemble. I’ll either try one more prototype or cross my fingers and jump right into a foam attempt hoping foam clay can cover up any sins

I FLAT PATTERNED THAT COMPLEX FUCKER BY HAND
*okay I tried simplifying the shape but that was also tricky to figure out and probably has to be done at an earlier step to actually be easier. I sectioned the horn out into each straight ish section and am patterning each cone/cylinder, so the cut lines arent going to match up cuz that’s too hard which is something I’m happy to live with atm

OH my god I just realized i can simplify the shape to pattern it and then build it up in complexity with foam clay or something god DAMMIT
I can’t find any tutorials converting complex 3d objects to 2d patterns by hand so I’ve been fuckass improvising.
It’s either gonna look pretty sick or so very stupid :D
Note that the draft shown did NOT work lmao

If I didn’t know I had adhd before I *definitely* would know after spending 8 hours glued to the table trying to make a single tiefling horn mold without eating or drinking anything

I was inspired by an au in a fanfiction where Tav is a whole angel and has to maintain his human/aasimar form, and this has got me crafting in a way I haven’t experienced since elementary school art class!
Finished the wings the morning of Halloween and wasn’t even able to stay for the costume contest lol
Didn’t even think of the mask until the next day when i was dealing with a million leftover feathers, so I’ll have to wear this again next year if the wings survive storage that long
