he almost pauses when usagi admit to even keeping it from her friends. now that was interesting. he thought usagi expressed everything with her friends. the group of usually giggling girls were overly close so he knew this must be some big news if she was holding it that hidden. it also concerned him further. “ is it that bad? “ his arm around her shoulders tightens. 

“ should be more than friends… “ he mutters with a playful grin.

he means every word, though.

“ why would i? how much depth do you think i have? “ it was either that or he was worrying about failing a mission. one was obviously a lot more entertaining than the other and he hated dwelling on things he had little control over so… “ would you like to know the kind of things you did to me last night? “ he joked with a wiggle of his eyebrows. 

“Yes,”  she sighs, the arm around her shoulder offering a semblance of comfort to her - a comfort she didn’t realize she was previously lacking. And it’s not like her to be so upfront, but she’s tired of waging this war with her past all on her own. Maybe - just maybe - Seiya is her safest bet at finding peace.

His remark, however, manages to lighten the mood and she rolls her eyes once more, slapping him playfully on the arm. “Ugh, you’re such a boy sometimes. . .” she wrinkles her nose in spite of the scarlet heat now burning across her cheeks. He keeps pressing, however, and she knows he’s seeking a reaction out of her but she can’t help it! She practically jumps out of his reach and laughs, nervously, hand darting to scratch the back of her head. “Seiyaaaaaaaaaaaaa, if it wasn’t “put you to sleep,” I really don’t want to know.”

His abrupt laughter flirts with something uncertain inside of her: a feeling (a doubt. . .) that has consumed her from the moment Serenity clawed her way through Usagi’s previously carefree existence. Although she’s a handful of years older now - her role as a senshi and a princess a little more polished, a little less blundering - she lives at war with her insecurities and the angry princess that lurks somewhere in her darkest of memories.

While Usagi can’t deny the fact that Mamoru is nothing if not devoted, conscious and steadfast to his duty to not only protect her and the future they’ve seen together, she can’t help but wonder if part of him resents her - if he loves her only because he has to. He’ll never lead a life of normalcy and it’s that thought that makes her reel with guilt and anger. 

It’s all my fault.

She’s clutching the edge of his couch when Mamo’s voice garners her attention, her cobalt stare plastered to his back. “I don’t really think that’s hard to believe,” she murmurs and shakes her head. As a matter of fact, she knows exactly what he’s talking about. After all, her own thoughts and memories are an amalgamation of her past and present. She lives as Usagi, but grieves for and fears the girl that once lived on the moon, that housed enough power in her body to not only protect but destroy. Serenity is volatile and Usagi keeps her at bay by feigning happiness. 

When Mamo finally joins her own the couch, the tension Usagi doesn’t realize she’s been holding in her shoulders dissipates and she finds herself leaning into him at the exact same time he settles down on the plush cushions. Her head finds home atop of his shoulder, her desire to be closer to him outweighing any of her previous apprehension. She waits patiently for him to continue, her fingers threading through his in an attempt to offer him a modicum of comfort.

 For now, she relaxes and listens to the low rumble of his voice as he offers an explanation that sounds astoundingly similar to the torment she’s been facing for years, save a few key differences - namely the bottle of rum that sits center stage on his coffee table. She’s gentle with him, idly stroking his fingers with the pad of her thumb as he speaks.

 “Mamo-chan. . .” she begins, straightening her posture. “You don’t have to face all of this on your own. You do know that, right?” her brows crease together, body shifting on the couch so she’s facing him entirely with his hand still clasped between her fingers. “Serenity lives inside of me just as much as Endymion lives inside of you. This is not your problem to face alone,” another shake of her head. 

“While I don’t really like that this has been happening. . .” she pauses to gesture at the bottle of rum in question, “. . .you’re not the only one who has had to find ways to cope with our past. Sometimes I feel so overwhelmed with anger when we’re fighting with youma - or when you’re in danger - I want to tear this entire world apart.” 

And she feels angry now, a storm of regret and pain on his behalf brewing inside of her. Still, she keeps herself grounded with his hand in hers, bringing their entwined fingers to rest on the middle of her thigh. She can feel tears prickling at the edges of her eyes, unsure of whether or not they’re from sheer frustration or the knowledge that Mamoru has been suffering for years now; but, she swallows thickly and squares her shoulders as if to show she won’t let them fall. Instead, she pushes them away with the back of her free hand and exhales through her nose. “I wish we could just go back in time and change the past.” Even if that means we would never be together. “Or if I could just. . .stop us from ever meeting? I don’t know. Anything to make sure you’d never have to deal with all of this. Maybe Luna and Artemis could help? We don’t have to tell the girls if you don’t want to, but Luna and Artemis know a lot about the Moon Kingdom, so maybe they could help us both find some peace for Endymion and Serenity?”
