Taylor Swift is officially engaged to Travis. Wanda was lying back on the couch, reading, when you shuffled into the living room, a blanket thrown over your head and shoulders like a cloak. You crawled on top of her, stretching out over her legs. The hem of her baggy sweater rode up, leaving you the perfect opportunity to nudge it up further until you could rest your head on her bare stomach.

She chuckled softly. “And what do you think you’re doing?” She asked playfully, reaching down to stroke your hair. She had always been self conscious of the way her body looked after having children. Her stomach was left stretched and wrinkled, sagging grotesquely around her belly button. Her hips and side were littered with stretch marks that folded in on themselves when she sat down. She did her best to cover herself up with shapewear or baggy clothes, but you always seemed determined to thwart her plans.

“Mmm,” you hummed delightfully, nuzzling into the soft skin, “it’s tummy time.”

Wanda couldn’t help but smile. “Like a baby, huh? You still learning how to hold your head up on your own, hun?”

You nodded, burying your face further into her plush stomach. “Mhm. Can’t do it. ‘s impossible,” you mumbled, putting up a fake struggle to try and lift your head. “I gotta stay right here.”

She chuckled again and you could feel the vibration against your ear. “Okay, honey. You can stay right there.” She carded her fingers through your hair, watching you with a soft smile. You look so happy, so content. It was like watching a little cherub snuggle up to a cloud. Sometimes, the way you looked at her, the way you touched her, almost made her forget why she hated this part of herself at all. I was one thing for you to tell her she was beautiful, but this was different. There was no faking this kind of admiration. Your love and joy were tangible. There was truly nowhere in the world you’d rather be.

All the time she spent wishing her body looked a different way suddenly felt foolish. How could she want anything other than this? How could she ever dream of changing something that made you so happy?

You settled between her legs and wrapped your arms around one of her thighs. She watched as you tried to look up at her with glassy eyes, but you couldn’t seem to keep them from rolling back in your head. Your entire body went slack with relaxation.

“Squishy mama bellies make perfect nests for little birds, don’t they?” she whispered, rubbing the sensitive spot on the back of your head.

You nodded, rubbing your cheek against her navel. “The best nest in the world. The first one to ever keep me safe.”
