A Fireside Read
Artist: Artist: William Mulready (Irish, 1786-1863)
Date: 1825
This picture, painted in Mulready’s liquid palette of warm caramel tones, is an unusually intimate study of domestic quiet. The little painting on the mantelpiece looks also to be by Mulready. The sitter resembles a Mrs. Leckie, with whom Mulready had a relationship.

The term “orgy” mostly attributed to the dionysian cult and now strongly associated with acts of sexual character, didn’t initially possess this content, but signified the mystical ceremony in which only the initiated ones could participate so they could/would witness or feel a secret meaning or revelation, one that it was prohibited to share with uninitiated therefore unprepared others afterwards, therefore an oath of secrecy was an imperative condition to assure the orgiastic element of these ceremonies and rituals that Dionysus was in charge of. Greek-Roman mosaic of Dionysus and Acme (personification of prosperity) from the House of Dionysus, 3rd century A.D., Paphos, Cyprus.
