Vlcc School Vitiligo and Associated Myth
Vitiligo can be a psychologically devastating disease, especially for patients with darker skin photo types, such as those with brown or black skin. The term Vitiligo is believed to be derived from “vitium”, meaning “defect” or “blemish”.
Vitiligo is a disorder in which white patches appear on the surface of the skin in different parts of the body
1 This happens because the cells that make pigment (color) in the skin are destroyed.
2 These cells are called melanocytes.
Vitiligo is a pigmentary disorder of the skin, which is caused by circumscribed and de-pigmented macules forming patches on the skin. Vitiligo is a progressive disorder in which some or all of the melanocytes in the affected skin are selectively destroyed. Vitiligo affects 0. 5% – 2% of the world population. Although several theories have been proposed about the pathogenesis of vitiligo, the precise reasons for this disorder are still unknown. Generally agreed upon principles and theories suggest that the disorder emanates due to the absence of functional melanocytes in vitiligo skin and a loss of his to-chemically recognized melanocytes, owing to their destruction. However, the destruction is most likely a slow process resulting in a progressive decrease of melanocytes.
Additionally it is believed that genetic factors may influence the age of onset of vitiligo. The inheritance of vitiligo may include:
1 Genes associated with the biosynthesis of melanin,
2 Response to oxidative stress, and
3 Regulation of autoimmunity.
Myth 1: Vitiligo is an outcome of the wrong combination of foods, for instance, milk and fish consumption.
Fact: Factually, vitiligo has no link with diet or particular foods. It is irrational to deprive patients of food items like lemon, curd, tomatoes, and pickles in the hope of diminishing the possibility of the disease.
Myth 2: People with vitiligo disorders are lesser productive in their mental or physical proficiencies. Fact: Vitiligo is limited entirely to the skin. It has no relationship with or does not influence or affect any other organ.
Myth 3: Vitiligo is a kind of leprosy and is communicable.
Fact: Vitiligo is in no way linked to leprosy. It is not infectious or contagious and, hence, cannot pass on from one person to another.
Myth 4: Vitiligo is connected to serious skin diseases, such as skin cancer and albinism.
Fact: There are transparent dissimilarities among each of these syndromes, and these diseases are not linked to Vitiligo.
Myth 5: Vitiligo is untreatable.
Fact: Medications like steroids, Ultraviolet A, immune modulator drugs and the newer narrowband Ultraviolet B are accessible treatments to prevent the spread of vitilog in the body. There also exist several surgical options to remove the white patches caused by Vitiligo.

Glow like a Pro Nutrition for Glowing Skin
Since ancient times, women have sought after a variety of ways to retain their beauty. Good nutrition is one of the best kept secrets for staving off wrinkles and maintaining youthful, glowing skin. Your skin cells are continually being renewed and need a constant supply of nutrients for optimum health. As a result they are often the first to show signs of nutritional deficiencies. The reduced supply of oxygen, vitamins, minerals and protein to skin cells can lead to dryness, flaking, and an outbreak of spots. In this article, you will come across some of the top beauty foods, foods that give your skin a good hormone boost, alkaline foods and foods to be scrapped off from the diet for improving skin health and shine.
THE TOP BEAUTY FOODS
AVOCADO supplies monounsaturated fats, which promote plump, youthful skin. It also supplies antioxidants such as vitamin C, E and carotenoids to help guard against wrinkles. BERRIES are an excellent source of vitamin C and bioflavonoids that improve collagen formation and help keep skin supple CARROTS provide carotenoid antioxidants, which help to protect the skin against sun damage, and are also a good source of silica, which strengthens skin, hair and nails. FISH provide omega 3 fatty acids that reduces skin dryness, improve elasticity, strengthen nails and add a glossy sheen to your hair GARLIC dilates tiny blood arteries and boosts blood flow to the skin SOYABEAN provides is of lavones that help to keep the menopausal skin supple and combat dryness and age related wrinkles. PUMPKIN AND SWEET POTATOES provide oestrogen to regulate collagen production in the skin and works as an anti -ageing food component
Foods that are Natural Sunscreen for the Skin
Skin exposure to harsh UV light of sun has proven to have a damaging effect on the texture and complexion. Some sun exposure is important for Vitamin D but don’t expose any area of skin for more than 20 mins. A diet rich in the antioxidant vitamin C, E and carotenoids found in yellow-orange fruit and vegetables such as papaya, carrots, pumpkin and sweet potato also help to protect against the damaging effect of the sun rays. Foods with red pigment called carotenoids should also be included in the diet which acts as a natural protection against sun. Some lycopene containing foods are tomatoes, grapefruit, guava and watermelons that keeps your skin healthy.
Foods that balance out Hormonal Levels for Glowing Skin
A major reason for dry flaky skin or excess greasiness and spots is due to imbalanced hormone level. Oestrogen, a hormone provides female skin with the youthful glow. When Oestrogen levels start to decline in females in their mid to late 40s, so does collagen production, elastin and hyaluronic acid – the very things that give skin elasticity. So include foods containing plant hormones known as phyto-oestrogen like soy foods, flaxseeds and sesame seeds. Also Indian spice Turmeric has powerful anti-inflammatory actions and also helps in balancing female sex hormones. Turmeric can be added to curries, soups and vegetable gravy preparations.
Alkaline diet for Skin Nourishment Our body works hard to maintain a very tight pH range of 7.35 to 7.45, which is slightly alkaline. With the acidic pH the skin health is affected. So for optimal beauty benefits aim to eat a balanced diet that consists of 60% to 80% alkaline foods and only 20% to 40% acid foods. By this I mean eating more fruits and green leafy vegetables and cutting back on animal proteins and processed foods. Aim to eat more alkaline forming foods like green tea, tomatoes, berries, grapefruit, figs, peppers, nuts like almonds and walnuts, beetroot radish, kale, spinach, broccoli.

Tips For Everyday Grooming
On a Monday, you might want to start the week with a great style for a great impression. This day, you could straighten your hair to show off the length. Make sure you use your heat protectant spray. I am sure we have all used a hair straightener before though so style how you love to with your iron.
Tuesday can be your fun day with a flirty side pony. I tend to tie my hair back into a side ponytail and then choose pieces from the tail to curl-this way they look fresh and not smashed like they would if you would curl before tying it all back. You can even add some fun with your bangs by pinning them back or leaving them down curled to add extra flirt.
Wednesday is hump day, which means you might need a break from your technical styling. To do so, it is as easy as showering and leaving your hair with a damp look. Each time I sport this style, it saves me about ten minutes because I just put a little product in my damp hair to give a natural wave look. Sometimes I pull my bangs back for a more put-together look or leave them down.
Thursday to me is a fancy day again so I like to go with the Snooki-inspired poof. You can curl or straighten your hair for this style but if you are in a time crunch, I recommend you straighten to make things easier. I like to curl my hair (you can use any method of curling that you like) because it can hide split ends that may be visible if I straighten. Next, I make sure my part is far to the side and I backcomb the crown of my hair. Grab as much hair as you would like and pin it back behind your head about in the middle.
Friday is fun day! I love these days because I tend to go with any freestyle kind of hair ‘do that I feel like. If you are feeling creative, do not be afraid to try out a new style that you thought of on your own! My favourite style to do on Friday’s is to reuse my curls from Thursday and sport a spunky high ponytail to reflect the spunkiness that Friday’s represent.
These are some of the easiest styles you can ever do with your hair and do not take much time either. The weekends are yours to come up with creative styles or reuse any of the styles from the week. Just always remember to use plenty of protectant spray if you are going to use your hair straightener and always be cautious if you are going to tease the hair also.
