Anti-trans policies at Conservative convention met with apathy and outrage
“People are going to die,” says a former Conservative candidate, while party leaders refuse to take a stand on LGBTQ2S+ rights.
The war against queer and trans rights in Canada is ramping up after members of the Conservative Party voted overwhelmingly to advance anti-LGBTQ2S+ policies at their annual convention at the Centre des congrès de Québec in Quebec City over the weekend.
But just down the street from the convention, at a queer bar called Le Drague, few seemed to know what the convention was about or that it was happening just a stone’s throw away.
Outside the bar, Xtra chatted with Christian Parisée, a 19-year-old CEGEP student who didn’t know about the convention, but expressed concerns about the anti-LGBTQ2S+ rhetoric espoused by Conservatives.
“It scares me a lot because I feel like this is only the start, if they win the next election, then I feel like they could do more harm,” he said. “I’m concerned about my trans friends who are becoming a target for Conservatives.” [...]

It's worth noting that today (September 20th) Canadians all over the country are participating in counter protests against Anti-LGBTQIA2+ groups across the nation, often based around schools and government buildings. This puts the lives of trans youths at risk. Canadians have always housed bigotry here at home, but the influence from the United States is causing a political whirlwind. Suddenly opinions on the personal lives of others is now a political stance. People would rather fall in line with their traditional beliefs than make way for something new.

As debate continues over policies requiring parental consent for youth under 16 to change their name or preferred pronouns in some schools, members of Canada’s LGBTQ2 community say such legislation could put some at risk of abuse, harassment or even homelessness.
The concerns come as Saskatchewan and New Brunswick recently put in place such laws.
When asked earlier this week about whether Ontario will implement similar policies, the province’s education minister said parents should be “fully involved” in “life-changing” decisions involving their children.
But some LGBTQ2 youth say it’s not always an easy conversation to have.
