There are so many great ways to write ross vis-a-vis James and Francis in ross ex machina fitzier rescue fics but my abslolute personal favourite goes like this:

JFJ is seething with envy, because yes he may have been dying, but he and Francis had built something there on the shale damnit, and now here is a James who is far superior to him in every regard. Who has better hair (JFJ's has been a complete mess thanks to the scurvy), with whom Francis is at complete ease (Francis really has been rather uneasy around JFJ of late), who, might one add, was never punched by Francis (James was), and whose bond with Francis goes back far longer—while JFJ and Francis were busy being chased about by the Tuunbaq, Ross and Francis spent past expeditions holding hands and petting penguins together. Listen to me a best post canon JFJ is one who gets to be a little vain and a little shallow okay, it looks so good on him.

Francis is grateful and elated beyond words to be united with his dear friend. He can also tell that JFJ is feeling a little touchy (JFJ tries but he is really not subtle, bless) but he is completely oblivious as to why that might be. He would just like his two Jameses to get along—specifically for JFJ to like Ross because Ross is so important to him, and for Ross to approve of JFJ because of . . . well, no reason at all really.

Meanwhile Ross is sitting there like surely I am not the only person here who can see that you two are absolutely and irrevocably in love? Oh, hold on, I am? He loves Francis, he is perceptive, he is very amused and he is wondering whether fitzier will figure it out on their own or if he should say or do something before they combust into flames.

As a queer, trans person who lives in the USA, I’m wondering if it’s time for a mutual aid and self-defensively militant wing of the LGBTQ+++ community.

So, hear me out: in the 1960s/70s, there was an anti-classist, anti-racist, collective action group called the Rainbow Coalition. It was based in Chicago and founded by Fred Hampton of the Black Panther Party. It unified the Panthers, the Young Lords, and the Young Patriots Organization into a multicultural working-class collectivist entity. It fell apart after (21-year-old) Hampton was assassinated by the FBI.

As a present member of the queer/trans community in Chicago, aka living in the United States in 2025, I think it’s time for collective and protective LGBTQ+++ action. The perfect name is already out there and not currently in use.

Anyone else down to reincarnate the Rainbow Coalition?
