She kissed demons, and slept with ghosts because living with the dead felt more like home.

Her smile softened, and she rolled her shoulders back a little as if to shake off the sour mood she’d been in. It wasn’t like her to be so snappy, but it was like her to refuse to apologize for it, even when she ought to. Instead, she shook her head. “Not to worry,” she offered. “I know the feeling, truthfully.”
“It really is such a bad habit of mine, my mom used to get so frustrated with me.” She turned so she was facing the woman a little more and gave her a slight grin, “I’m Tori, by the way.”

“Move along.” Grace said as she shifted poses on her yoga mat, which was set up in the middle of town square. It was a beautiful day outside and she’d actually had some time to get in a quick workout, so she wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to enjoy the sun. “There’s nothing to see here.”
Tori snorted as the woman spoke and she couldn’t help but pause, “I’m just impressed you’re that good at yoga. I have the balance of a newborn giraffe.”

He needed the distraction and his car needed a service at the same time, and whilst he normally took it to the towns’ mechanic he decided he wanted to do it himself, having picked up the skills over the past few years when he found the car. He had to keep his hands busy or he’d find himself punching someone, or reaching for the bottle and that hadn’t exactly ended well the last time he’d done that. Sensing someone near by, he glanced up before nodding a little in greeting. “Alright?”
Victoria absolutely knew she was verging on creepy as she watched him work on his car, but she was curious and had way too much free time on her hands. She jumped slightly at his words and nodded quickly, “I’m good, I’m sorry for watching, you seemed like you knew what you were doing and I was curious.”

“No. Look I’m serious. First it was Plan B. Which is weird, why would you order that online. Even with prime you could still be pushing it, right? But that’s not the weirdest part, after that there were communion wafers in the cart. Are the two related? Someone hacked into my amazon prime.”
“That might be the weirdest combination of anything you could get off of Amazon, and I have drunkenly ordered some off the wall things before. Was someone questioning their choices and thought the communion wafers would make them feel better? Or was it like a ‘stick it to the man’ kinda thing? I have many questions.”

Eyeing Tori nervously, Matthew recoiled a bit, fearful that she would reach out and grab him. The young boy couldn’t betray his interest in the cereal though, since it was his favorite brand. At the offered question, Matthew shyly looked up at his father before raising five fingers to indicate his age. The father patted his son’s head again, as if to reassure him that everything was fine and that revealing his age was not the greatest secret in the world. “He’s… trying to be friendlier with strangers, right?” Chase urged quietly, giving his child a knowing look over a conversation they had before a ways back. “It’s a work in progress,” he finally said with a tense smile, glancing up at Tori, trying not to seem defeated about it.
Tori watched Matthew with a soft smile, nodding her head as he held up his fingers. “You’re five years old! That’s a whole hand!” She let her eyes travel upwards to meet Chase’s with chuckle. “You know, it’s not necessarily a bad reaction to have. He seems like a smart kid, you should be proud.”

Before he’d left for his mission he’d been in town since it opened, and in the time before hand he’d realised that he made a few playful ‘enemies’ in town with silly pranks, and play fighting that had resulted in some of the older townsfolk annoyed with him almost constantly. However, in a town like Hollow Grove those old folk were most likely to still be around when you return to town, as he’d found out when he’d been whacked over the back of the head by one of them who still had a grudge from some innocent thing he’d done some 20 years ago. Spotting her again he ducked down and hid, before realising he was being watched. “Turn around, you saw nothing.”
Victoria watched as the man ducked down, hiding from someone, though she had a hard time believing it was because of the tiny old woman who was shuffling along in front of them. At his words she realized it was the naked man she’d run into during her run last month and she paused, knowing she probably just needed to continue walking, but against her better judgement she moved closer to him and ducked down with him. “I would, but I need to know if you are in fact hiding from that little old lady?”

He furrowed his brow at her, but took her hand after a moment and helped himself to his feet. “That doesn’t make me feel better at all,” he countered. “Nobody offered to drag my ass away.” Zac paused, gave her a playfully supicious look, and nodded at her with his chin. “What’s your secret?”
Tori bit back a laugh as she braced herself to help him up, “If you want I can knock you over and then offer to drag you? Offer you the same hospitality.” She smirked slightly, her lips curling as she shrugged, “Just lucky I guess. And I’m a defenseless girl who isn’t shouting profanities at those around him.”

chase-hastings
Waving back, Chase smiled as best he could. Everything seemed to make him tense and uncomfortable these days, but it wouldn’t help any of his encounters if he was just rude. “Chase. And you’re fine. He… He’s like that around anyone really,” the father remarked with a small shrug. Not that he could say he was much different from his son either. Reaching down, the dark-haired man gently ruffled Matthew’s hair before nodding at the cereal in Tori’s hands. “I think you caught his eye because he likes the same brand,” he chuckled. The statement was only rewarded with a small tug on his pants, and he looked down again to see the small boy curling his hands up into tiny fists with his clothes wrapped up in them. “Am I wrong, Matthew?”
Tori nodded understandingly, some days she wished she could hide behind her dad’s legs too, but then she remembered that she was an adult and it would have been a little weird to hide behind another adult’s legs. “He’s such a cute little guy.” Chuckling she glanced down at the box in her hands, “It’s my absolute favorite! I probably eat it way more than I should, but that’s okay.” Squatting down and balancing on the balls of her feet, she made sure to give Matthew his space as she spoke, “How old are you Matthew?”

She couldn’t help but focus on the phrase most of the time, not yet willing to accept the apology if she had known just what she was doing in the first place. Rose turned the rest of the way around in her seat to look over the stranger, and smiled a little. Her words, however, weren’t quite as friendly as she asked what was on her mind. “Did you notice this time?”
She picked up on the woman’s tone quickly, taken aback at the bite that laced her words. Choosing to ignore it, Tori smiled brightly and shrugged, “I didn’t, I’ve been a little preoccupied, but I apologize if it bothered you!”

Rose was sat on a restaurant patio, watching the traffic of Church Street passing by. This was the best way for her to get to know the town and its people, just by observing. She preferred to do so undisturbed, and so the tapping at the table behind her was beginning to drive her insane. She waited as long as she could, until she decided that if they hadn’t stopped by then, they weren’t going to. With a turn of her head and a dry tone of voice, she called out.
“—That’s starting to get annoying.”
&. open.
Victoria didn’t have many nervous habits, but anyone who grew up around her could tell anyone who asked that tapping things was one of her bigger habits. Fingers, pencils, rulers, it didn’t matter, she could tap it without even realizing, so the woman’s words startled her slightly as she clenched her fingers inwards, a sheepish grin on her face. “Sorry, most of the time I don’t even realize I’m doing it.”

chase-hastings
Chase was reaching for a box of cereal, debating on whether or not he should get yet another brand of sugary treats or switching to something else instead. He knew what Matthew’s favorite was, but the man didn’t want to spoil his son too much. In the midst of his decision process, he was surprised by his son clasping to his right leg tightly, adjusting so that he was hiding behind Chase’s leg. “Matthew?” Chase murmured, glancing down before turning to see what his son was hiding from. The father adjusted himself so that he was facing the other person, protecting his shy son behind his leg.
“Sorry. He’s a bit shy. Are we in your way?”
Post drunken cereal binge the night before, Victoria found herself in the cereal aisle with a wicked hangover, squinted through narrowed eyes as she looked for her particular brand of puffed breakfast food, moving to grab one near the little boy who seemed very nervous as he clasped the leg of the man Tori assumed to be his father. She gave the little boy a small wave and smiled as brightly as she could in hopes of making him feel less nervous, glancing up at the man as he spoke, “No, not at all. You guys are totally fine, I just realized I finished off all of my cereal last night and didn’t want to make breakfast so here I am. I didn’t mean to make him nervous, sorry.” She gave the man the same small wave as she grabbed for her brand of cereal next to him, “I’m Tori.”

“—Oh yeah, no, totally fine.” He grunted his words through an obvious grimance, and looked up at the passing pedestrians from his place on the ground. Well, it wasn’t his place. He’d been put there by a taxi that ran a red light, though it was going slow enough to avoid any serious damage. Despite the fact that he’d walk away with little more than a bruise or a scrape, Zac couldn’t help but be offended when a couple of people walked by without more than a passing glance. “Just keep walking, assholes!”
&. open.
Victoria had missed whatever had happened to the man that was currently on the ground, but whatever it was, she knew how much it sucked to be on your back in front of the town. Rushing over from her spot near the bakery, she extended a hand, “People suck but if it makes you feel any better, I once sprained my ankle on a busy sidewalk and basically had to be dragged away.”

“Kegs and eggs, kegs and eggs, fuck I love eggs and kegs. So good… kegs, eggs.” She was muttering in something of a sing song voice, somewhere between hungover from the night before and getting drunk again before the day had even begun. Fairly, she’d barely touched sober in some time now. Shoving some scrambled eggs in her mouth with her fingers and following it with a red solo cup of beer, she leaned against the wall. “It’s just so fucking good.”
Victoria’s eyes fell on the woman who looked less sober than anyone she’d ever seen on a Saturday morning, admiring her determination to enjoy the beer and eggs. Leaning against the wall next to her, she took a bite of her own eggs, chuckling slightly, “You might actually be my favorite person this morning.”

“Oh, shit!” She laughed, nose crinkling as the piece of popcorn missed her open mouth and hit her square in the nose, “So close! One more time, one more time!” Charlie cheered, pulling a piece out of the bag she was holding and tossing it up into the air, head tilted back as she tried once more to catch it with her mouth.
Victoria watched the woman as she tried to catch the popcorn, giggling as the popcorn bounced off of her nose. “Don’t think about it so much! Just let it happen and see where it goes!”

He wasn’t in the mood for a party, or a festival or whatever the hell was happening today. In fact, he’d thought that the entire event was going to be a disaster, especially after what had happened just a few months ago at the Spring Fling. And, in general, the week that had just occurred had left him in a foul, and drunk, mood. Finishing his next beer, he indicated for another, “Just keep them coming.”
Victoria found herself next to the man, watching as he pounded his drinks like he was on a mission to finish all the alcohol on his own. She flagged down the bartender with a grin and asked for a beer before settling in, her elbow propped up on the bartop. Turning to the man, she watched him for a moment before speaking, “Rough day?”
