Automata
The concept for the automata project I chose to do in the beginning involved two ballet dancers, a male and a female.  The female ballet dancer was to leap into the air while the male dancer was to move to catch her. While I was figuring out the cams to create to make these movements possible, I realized that the solution I came up with caused both figures to have the same cam motion. That’s when I decided to tweak my concept.
I still made the female figure move up and down on a shaft with the use of an egg-shaped cam. The change with her was that instead of her leaping into the air as originally planned, I switched her with the motion from the male. I had her start in a bent stance and glued the tip of her right toe to the box so when the shaft lifted, it caused her leg to straighten. I created the female figure out of balsa wood. To create as a 3D figure, I glued the wood together and carved out the shapes of her body. I then sanded the wood down to the exact shape I wanted each piece of her body.
The guy I completely changed from the original and created him to twirl. I used two gears instead of a cam. At the end of the shaft connecting the handle and the egg-shaped cam together, I put a small sized circular gear that had prongs pointing horizontally.  To keep the figure and vertical shaft steady, I used a small circle disc and glued a ½ - 1 inch straw to the disk, so the vertical shaft can be placed inside and won’t move out of place. On the shaft connected to the guy figure, I put a bigger circular gear with the same kind of prongs. To balance the shaft, gear, and cam out, I created a triangular stand with a straw glued to the end that the shaft was inserted into. I then glued the bottom of the triangular stand to the box. The male figure is created the exact same way as the female figure. Just like the female figure, I created him using balsa wood.
The color scheme I chose for the entire project are the complimentary colors, purple and yellow. The entire box and triangular stand are painted yellow while the cams, gears, and shaft are all painted a dark grey purple. At the end of the shaft and prongs, I added some yellow. For the color scheme for the figures, I was inspired by Minoan artwork where the female figure is painted lighter than the male figure. The female figure is painted a light lavender with her hair being a dark purple. The male figure is painted light royal purple with the same dark purple hair as the female.
This project was especially challenging for me. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out what cams and gears I should use and then remaking them when they didn’t work. While the gears and cams were hard, making the figures was the easiest and best part for me.
